I purchased the M6 Mk II, to get into video, but have not yet worked with it much for that purpose. A useful comparison, as I've been hearing about the "soft" 4k image on the M6 II for some time. Yet, your comparison clips suggest that the difference - if any - is quite trivial even against optimal setting on the Sony. For what it's worth, I recently shot a commercial on the Canon M 6 II. I was more than happy with the image quality, and the client was delighted.

    • @RogerAVHansen

      The difference between the cameras is more about 8-bit vs 10-bit, 4:2:0 vs 4:2:2 and cropped vs full frame. The Sony A7IV has a downscaled 7K image while the Canon M6 mark II has an upscaled 3,5K, but still I think the 4K image out of the M6 mark II works just fine 😊

      @@RogerAVHansen 8 vs 10 for sure makes diffrence, I also have m6 mk2 and a ninja to go with it, and I would say the biggest problem the m6 has is bitrate for internal recording, 10 bit 422 output to the ninja looks great, but I would say the higher bit rates are the bigger diffrence :), I am not a professional at all, just a hobby nerd, but I get awsome video with this combo, and sharpness sometimes owerrated, I often throw on a pro-mist filter to soften it up a bit, and make dreamy feel specially with my sigma lens, thanks for the video :) made me feel a bit better (only problem with 10 bit hdmi output on m6 is, you only get 25 and 30 frames.. no 24 :( )

    I still thing the cheaper, older Canon looked great! It is very hard to tell the difference without cropping/zooming on the image. However, I do wish Canon would have marketed the camera as 3.5K and just maximized the quality of that resolution; no line skipping or filling in fake data.

    Yes, I knew about it. The advantage of line skipping is quite good rolling shutter control in M6 II. However if Canon introduced 20mp sensor (instead of 33mp) with oversampled 4k, and and put it into M50 II body, that would be a very good camera. I watched your movie on a FHD screen so the films look quite similar, however I think Sony still had more details in the background (bushes, etc.). Who would like to have a 20mp sensor with real 4k in M50 II body? I would!

    • @RogerAVHansen

      I think everyone would like to have uncropped 4K in an M50 body, but I don’t think we’ll see any more EF-M cameras from Canon. I believe the future for APS-C Canon cameras has RF mount’s.

      The 4K in the M6 mark II is only “fake”, in that regards that it lacks some pixels to be a “real” 4K image, but the 4K is much higher quality, sharper and better than the 1080p 😊 So I would definitely film in 4K rather then 1080p ☺️

    Oh my god, I only just noticed this today!! I was editing and trying to make the image look as good as possible, so I applied a sharpening filter. I noticed it made weird blocky artifacts around certain parts... I'm almost certain this is the garbage data Canon is using to get the "4K" resolution. The video looks great from a distance, and even on a 4K laptop screen, I could only tell the difference if I got right up close to it. But it makes it unfortunately hard to use for more advanced video work (additionally because of a lack of LOG profiles and poor highlight performance.

      Depends on how it's acquired, which I don't know. If the 6960 pixels are line skipped every 3 lines, then you get 2320 pixels which you can downsample to 1920 and get real FHD. If it's skipped every 4 lines, then you only have 1740 pixels, so then it would be fake.

  • @mattdebyl8806

    There have been a lot of claims made about the M6 II (which mostly all stem from one original source). There are some giant leaps taken here, none of which are proven. The quote from Canon ‘through image processing’ has been taken completely out of context (again from that one source with an axe to grind and absolutely zero evidence). 4K on just about ANY hybrid photo / video camera is achieved ‘through image processing’. The Sony A7 IV that you claim as ‘true 4K’ has almost identical sensor resolution to the M6 II. It achieves its 4K image ‘through image processing’. Period. So the claim then becomes whether the M6 II line skips or downsamples. Almost no 4K is constructed from 1:1 pixels AND even when it is, it’s actually less detailed than downsampled 4K. There is no real evidence around that the M6 II does indeed line skip, as there are other methods such as pixel binning that can be used. But it may well be the case, we just can’t empirically state that’s the case and the 4K on the M6 II is any more ‘fake’ than any other hybrid camera. What we do know is that while there might be a bit less detail in the M6 vs the A7 IV, it also exhibits less rolling shutter. For many people that rolling shutter performance is more important than super sharp 4K.

    • @RogerAVHansen
      @RogerAVHansen  2 роки тому

      The fact that there is lesser rolling shutter on the M6 mark II is one thing that indicate that the camera uses line skipping to produce its 4K image, cause one of the advantages of line skipping is better rolling shutter. And you are right, every resolution in a camera is produced through “image processing”, the difference between the A7IV and the M6 mark II is their processors. Even if the sensor resolution is almost identical on the two cameras, the A7IV has a much better processor that can handle an oversampled 7K image without overheating in regular frame rates, but the processor in the M6 mark II can not. That’s why the M6 mark II uses line skipping to produce an upscaled 4K image. And even with an upscaled 4K image the M6 mark II overheats after a little more than one hour continuous recording in 4K. All my research before making this video claims that the M6 mark II uses line skipping. No other processing methods where ever mentioned. If you have any literature that says otherwise I would really like to read it 😊

    • @mattdebyl8806
      @mattdebyl8806 2 роки тому

      @@RogerAVHansen and what are those sources though? There’s very little to no real information about the way this camera processes images. Sony may have a more powerful processor in the A7 IV but broadly speaking the A7C, A7 III etc don’t. Its not about the capacity of the processor but as you mention likely to be the thermal capacity of the camera design. It is indeed a very small camera. This processor and sensor was also used in the 90D which had a secondary mode for reading 4K images out and that produces higher quality images again. Line skipping doesn’t HAVE to be every second line and doesn’t HAVE to be every second vertical column. Indeed a lot of line skipping is done in different increments or not done at all in the vertical. Skipping only horizontal lines. Pixel binning can be done on sensor, adjusting the readout and therefore the speed. Sony have numerous read out modes for any given sensor. Canon the same. Other than people completely guessing, there is no data on how Canon read this sensor out. The half and half line skipping is a total guess, again done elsewhere but then repeated (and in this case, like all others) as ‘fact’. I’ve not seen a video (or otherwise review etc) that claims that the softer, non oversampled ‘4K’ of cameras like the A7R IV are ‘fake’. They may be softer or not as detailed as heavily oversampled 4K, but so is ‘true 4K’ (off a native 4K sensor. Like I say, this all stemmed from an angry blogger with an axe to grind and then simply repeated (which seems to be how we get most of our ‘facts’ these days).

      @@mattdebyl8806 I agree with you in this. Besides - lines and rows skipping is not that simple in the case of a digital camera - as these cameras use Bayer matrix sensors. The relation between the end result images resolution and the structure of the sensor is not that trivial to "just" skip some lines and rows, because these are in fact not that easily defined on a Bayer sensor matrix.
      The camera might use a computationally more efficient algorithm to downsample the video, which in turn results in softer video, but I am quite sure that the whole sensor is read when shooting every frame.

      @@artem.boldariev thank you! I notice that I never got a response to this. Fact is, there are no facts about the way the image is derived in this camera that is available in the public space.
