- Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh was killed in Tehran on July 31st on Iranian soil and Iran vowed revenge against Israel within hours of the killing. The Supreme leader of Iran said “it is our duty to take revenge.”
But two weeks have passed and no large-scale Iranian response has been seen.
Iranian officials have said that a promised retaliatory strike could be delayed to allow ceasefire talks to progress.
Does Iran gain more from the build-up to the strike than what it may lose after the attack?

Iran will not attack Israel , but will be prepared for one and plan the ways to take the recoil of such an act, before engaging. Further, the relationship management with other countries bring in their income and therefore Iran will not act in an ad hoc manner. A war in the region will disturb its oil business and the pipelines and ships will come under attack within a day or two. Todays warfare is not same as it was during the Iran-Iraq wars. The repercussions will be long lasting and deadly. Iran knows how was it difficult to come back from the agony of unwanted warfare between neighbors and so it will not react fast to this incident. The killing of the Israel's enemy within Iran territory really involves the role played by Iran backing the Palestinian leadership, supporting their cause and making the Palestinian response a military one. Iran is aware of this and therefore the assault will be delayed indefinitely with a view of reaching a negotiated settlement between the Israel and Palestine representatives is in the vicinity. The day, when the Palestine elects its representation, there will be Peace in the landblock and the talented youth of Palestine will be educated and one day run their business to reach their unique aspirations without any third party influence. Hopefully!

It may be better to use a misdirected form of aggression? It's harder to be attacked if you don't start the war. What does Iran gain by going up against US Naval and air assets? Maybe a partial loss?
I suspect that Iran will look at those US bases in Iraq and in Syria. Maybe there are vulnerable places there to hit through Iran's proxy forces? After all Iran realizes that Israel is far weaker if the US is not committed to their protection.
I would expect a very asymmetrical type of aggression. Like the speaker mentions, the shipping lanes in the Gulf and the Red Sea are very vulnerable. Also Israel has interests in the region. Perhaps Iran will try to pressure other Gulf States, or try to pressure other regional players?
I would also think that Iran will look at Israeli and Jewish vulnerable institutions, schools, temples, culture centers. Look at the impact the assault on Russia's Crocus Center in Moscow by those Asiatic fighters. It's better to attack soft targets that directly impact civilians.
What does Israel or the Jewish diaspora have that is more vulnerable than Israeli military bases?
Who is travelling? And senior Israeli officials going abroad? Any serious Jewish leaders and businessmen that can be killed or kidnapped?
