Unfortunately there isn't much I can do to improve the animation/mouth syncing, if I had acess to the body double footage before they applied the CGI, deep fake would be a definite improvement.
Hopefully they release some behind the scenes footage eventually so I can give that a try.
Also, I only had 4 days spare to do this deepfake before the holidays, I'm not 100% happy with the quality but here it is anyway.
Enjoy!
Knowing how quick you put out the deepfake (relative to when episode came out), Disney should hire you to work on the deaging process in films, especially since they've done it in other media before.
This is phenomenal! I was waiting for you to do this - already a huge improvement! I keep thinking Disney will learn and quit making this weak mistake.
If I may ask, roughly how much money did you spend to make this happen?
Why doesn't disney use the same technology?
@@hidir3532 I think it has to do with using in-house technology and not wanting to use better alternatives. ILM probably designed and implemented the tech used to de-age characters for Star Wars. They probably know of the deepfakes but most likely stick with the deaging cgi because they are most familiar with it (rather than learning how to do deepfakes).
@@hidir3532 Yeah, i'm also having a hard time trying to understrand that...

Skin tone is a lot better. Deep fake also seems to add more textures to the face. The original just seems like it's airbrushed to the max lol.
Yeah but the expressiveness is still better in the original. The deepfake just looks dead.
Yeah it's better when you have a decent base.
The skin tone, the lips, the mouth shape, the moles, the scars, the eyes, even his fighting style was completely off and I just got done watching the OT movies as well as playing hundreds of hours of Battlefront 2 in which they completely NAILED Lukes fighting style (and pretty much each Jedi/Siths). This last scene was such a let down. Hell I still believe they did CGI Leia and Tarkin WAY more justice in the movies.
Well the old Star Wars movies are a bit more "textured" since they are older and we are used to see Mark Hamill that way so yeah, I prefer the deep fake one.
@@outlawzqc Same opinion. And edit was a little bit off. The color of the blade should remain a mystery till the elevator opened (we all knew who he was, but the suspense was there as well, but they showed the green too soon IMO). And that piruette with Force Push looked weird. Swooshing effect of the blade is very weak and was better even in Original Trilogy, here it lacks post-production.
Got no complains about Luke's presence, I was touched nonetheless, still love the scene, but from experienced filmmakers we should expect more than just good ideas.

Bro how is this remotely better? It looks a little worse if you ask me
Doesn't disney believe in deep fake tech?
When I first watched the episode, I said “they should’ve used deepfake technology instead. It would’ve looked more realistic.”
Yeah just they ran out of budget (or at least thats what was speculated)
@TGDS well they used Mark's face and de-aged him while this video used his face when he was younger and applied it to Luke. You can still see that it isn't perfect but it looks better than the original. Honestly though I think the editors were just lazy or something cause it could've been better even at their budget
@TGDS nah it was that CGI face tech they used in Rogue One.
@@epicvoiceguy Nope. It's deepfake.
@@epicvoiceguy no it’s been confirmed they used deep fake, but the best and most convincing deep fakes need a good movement mesh underneath to work with, and instead of just applying the deep fake to the face of the actor they used, there was a cgi layer in between, which is why he comes off so weird especially when speaking. They didn’t use mark hamil or Sebastian Stan as the body double for this Luke, so they had to try and fake a cgi face structure underneath to match some of Luke’s features so the deep fake wouldn’t come off misshapen.
Well done on TBOBF Luke! Looking forward to more. I hope they let you officially redo Mando 2 at some point.

Just watched the latest episode of book of boba. Bro! You SMASHED it. There are no words! Huge respect and admiration goes your way!!!
His face looks loads better, the animation is still off but that's based on the original animation so not a lot you can do... amazing work
Exactly right. People don't seem to understand how deepfakes work in it being a nearly completely automated process once the images are uploaded. No or very little manual animation is done after that.
So the only reason some of the mouth and head movements are still off is because the underlying animation of them was poorly executed. Had the deepfake been done over better animation or better yet, a live actor, the mouth and other animation would've been seamless.
Carrie Fisher deepfaked in Rogue One had the same issue for the identical reason. Whereas Harrison Ford deepfaked in Solo looked incredible (aside from Alden's square jaw/head which still bled through) because it was done over a live actor.
That being said, Hamill's deepfake here still looks infinitely better than what we had before.
@@boomieboo is it bad that I don’t see anything wrong with Luke’s face?
CGI biggest problem are the Eyes 👀, this version got the better ones so it looks more natural!
@@jonnieleewalker5164 for this particular case though it's not only the eyes .. which do feel dead yes.. but it's also mouth movement that looks here like luke had a stroke and the lips just don't move right anymore.. and also the editing cuts were off, around the neck and around the hood and around everything really .. Personally it just took me off the moment , but other than that i liked what they did with the scene and Luke.
@@alejandromate4071 I agree. For me its a problem with the top lip not moving. It's just completely stiff, and that's not how human mouths work. Sure, the upper lip doesn't move as much as the lower, but they definitely take on shape when forming sounds. Not enough cgi art gets this right, and that accounts for a lot of the uncanny Valley imo.
The deep fake does better with Luke's eyes.

It's the cloudiness in the eyes of the original that really takes me out. That and the lack of mouth movement when he speaks. I know you said mouth movement cant be helped and I understand that, just fixing the clarity of the eyes goes a long way to improving this.
Just need to use the eyes from this footage and the lips from the original.
For me, it's the skin. His skin looks way too perfect. The deepfake looks superior not just cuz he adds that spark back into the eyes, but the subtle imperfections into the skin that add so much character.
@@WobblesandBean yes you're right, it looks way to smooth.

I think they don't want deep fake to become popular so we can't put our favorite 13 year old disney princesses on...stuff.
Because they go to people who have been specialising in CGI for years. Doing it via CGI requires a lot of skill and can only be done by a few people in the world. Many times that number could use deep fake. It ceases to be something that is rare and can be charged at a premium rate. Consequently, they have a financial motive not to change.

I think the time wasn't in their side
Just to let you know as a professional 3D artist. It is extremely easier to apply a deepfake on top of a face that looks already similar to the target image, rather than a face that is entirely different. So them applying a deepfake on top of the already CGI-ed face made it not only way easier, less time consuming but also made it look way better. However, if you were to add deepfake on top of the original actor it wouldn't have worked, and there are millions of examples of how bad it looks online, when the face shape doesnt match. Also shows work on very tight schedules, and even deepfakes require a lot of time and you do not have much control over the outcome, making it almost worthless in production as it is right now.
@@farrex0 this guy did it shortly after, yes disney made it from scratch but why did they not apply the deepfake after?
How to make any CGI character look better:
Brighten the eye color and give them twinkles.
Glad I'm not the only one saying this. It's such a common missing detail, that's easily fixed.
Yeah. The lack of eye glint is what makes him look dead. Video game company Valve realised this in 2004, so they wrote code specifically to make sure character eyeballs always had a glint on them. The deep fake fixes that, and even though it makes the rest of the face look overly painterly, it's still enough of an improvement.
the glint/twinkle is specifically called a "catch light" in photography.
the fact that this isn’t even the best you could do excites me for the future of star wars
Ah, so this is why Luke looks so much better in Chapter 6.

No he looks sad
It’s all about they eyes, the key to the soul. Improvement compared to the original, hope they consider this deepfake.
Exactly. The eyes are so key.
And subtle mouth movement .
Right?? And the skin is too perfect, it's actually distracting. The deepfake looks much more real, because it adds back in those subtle imperfections. It still looks uncanny, but that's because the deepfake is simply overlaid on an already flawed template. Whoever did the original really did a poor job. The mouth movement is just straight up awful, and the eyes are lifeless. Jedi are stoic, but they're not completely devoid of emotion.
It's too bad there's no mock awards show for the Emmys, like The Razzies are to the Oscars, cuz this would definitely win most poorly animated 😂 Which is a shame, cuz they absolutely nailed it for lil' Grogu. Did Mark Hamill even perform for the template? Or is Luke entirely CG? I know they used a body double, but it doesn't specify in what capacity. I don't know if what we're looking at is Mark Hamill standing there with CG elements blocked over it, or if it's the nameless body double with Mark's facial performance.
It doesn't help that CGI Luke barely blinks. I think he only blinked 1x through the entire thing -when he bent down to pick up Grogu
Similar in the movie King Kong (2005) they would always have a fake highlight in the eyes of Kong. In its death scene the highlight disappears. As if the life and soul leaves the body. It's super subtle, but genius.
Incredible work. Can’t stop thinking about how good that episode was and it’s all thanks to you!

It's especially better in the eyes. The rest is a slight improvement that makes it even more accurate, but the eyes is what it makes the big difference here.
Except the mouth movement looks worse
I cannot believe they hired you, Shamock, to fix Luke up for The Book of Boba Fett, Episode 6! You literally brought Mark Hamill out of the 80s through time travel, or something!
You worked on this recent episode! Bravo! 👏👏👏 Thank you for bringing *him* back lol
Again they used the wrong technique...Use Bucky from Winter Soldier as the stand-in, already looks 90% like Mark Hamill...you then add minimal Deep Fake CGI to the nose and mouth distances etc, not even touching eyes and mouth much.....
Now that is an excellent idea
Honestly I wouldn’t have been upset at all if they just had Bucky play Luke!
Or just pass the mantle to bucky and accept that hes the new luke
It wouldn't be the same.. This had Mark Hamill.. And was De aged... Mark deserves this
Lol but they would’ve had to spend a ridiculous amount of money to get Sebastian, especially if he’s just a stand in.
I mean the internet is full of deep fakes. Why hasn’t anyone at Disney figured out this is better? Are they too old or something?
Maybe they’ll go back and deep fake it who knows
They should adapt to it already
I think they need to hire this guy to do it. I hope they become aware of his talents here!
They're stubborn. That's my guess.
What they did was deepfakes. Atleast part of it maybe like the mouth and eyes.
I saw the new episode of The Book of Boba Fett, with Luke on it, and I assume that is your work. I just can say that it's incredible.
After watching BOBF chapter 5 I Can’t wait to see this work on screen next episode 🙏
Deep fake doesn’t fix the core issue of the original. The face is simply not expressive enough. There is zero emotion or expression in anything. His eyebrows hardly move his lips move only when absolutely necessary. It looked like Disney just tried to play it super safe by not messing up the face model too much but the end result looks so bad in motion. The deep fake did fix a lot of the details on the skin which many already mentioned but it’s still in the uncannny valley for me.
exactly
The results are def better when deepfakes are used on an actual actors face
It's because Tarkin in Rogue One was too expressive to the point where his movements looked way too fluid and not realistic. Like you said, I think they tried to minimize the risk of that and completely over shot this time. Luke is kind of like a walking corpse. He makes no sudden movements or facial expressions, and he's got "dead eyes" :/
They need the original take without the deep fake
Well, other than the expression part, I can vouch that the deepfake one looks more surreal especially with the eyes being right, nevertheless. Its still a better part compared to the Disney 💩
DEEPFAKE: skin tone is better. Eyes are better. Shadows are better. ORIGINAL ILM: details movements are better. Im stunned for this!!!
It would be more perfect if they were not using CG, using a random real person to be as Luke and using deepfake to change his face.
if the person who did the deep fake had the mocap/original actor data if would be almost perfect and 10x better than the weird cg they decided to do
Lighting is much better on original.
The deepfake is better in details, but moves like a rubber mask. All deepfakes look like that to me, so I don't think I'd blame it all on the source being a processed (de-aged) image. Rubber mask face is a characteristic of deep fakes.
The eyes are unnaturally lit up on the deep fake and the mouth is worse off. Prefer the cheeks
As soon as I watched the latest episode of Boba Fett I thought Shamook had to have had a hand in the amazing de-aging effect.
Are they going to go back and let you fix this for real on the show? GREAT work man.
Luke: "Talent without training is nothing"
Rey: 🖕
Talent without training leads to matte Luke face.
Wasn't she trained with Luke and Leia in the trilogy?
If the issue that she was using the force in the first film before she was training, remember how easily/quickly using the force came to Luke in New Hope, before he had any real training with Yoda.
Bro din djarin beat gideon with no training, guess hes a mary sue too then?
@@squarehead3336 No training? Every Mandalorian trains/prepares for battle on a daily basis
@@squarehead3336 Din was trained in the Fighting Corps by the Children of the Watch. We don't know whether Gideon had any kind of advanced combat training.
Disney CGI specialists: It's impossible.
Disney: Shamook made this in a cave! WITH A BOX OF SCRAPS!
Clearly he is not a Shamook
Tony Stark
Oh yes. i love this post
Disney CGI specialists: "Well, I'm sorry...I'm not Shamook"
Actually the original line was ,"Tony Stark was able to build this in cave!. . . . .With a box of scraps!" so yours should read "Shamook was able to make this in a cave! With a box of scraps!"
I was especially keen for tonight's episode of Boba Fett just to see the fruits of your work with Disney! I assume you were a part of this as Luke looks phenomonal!
Amazing Work on today's episode!!
Holy shit, I don't understand why Hollywood doesn't implement this technology, it looks way better
The reason behind it might be that it is a controversial issue because some people use deepfake to put Hollywood actresses' faces on porn stars. It can be that Hollywood is afraid to use deepfake in their official materials because it could be interpreted that they legitimise that aspect as well.
A deepfake on UA-cam only needs to be at 1080p resolution, but a professional effects company working on TV and feature films needs a neural net that can be trained on faces and generate them at 4K or even 8K. That's going to take a lot of time and computing power. This deepfake is pretty good, but at 1:05, the deepfake doesn't have the amused expression Luke is supposed to get from seeing R2 interact with Grogu.
@@Prosaicus
With brutal render farms (can't imagine how gigantic is the one used by pixar)... it's a question of hours, even in 8K
@@Prosaicus Well, take into account that this deepfake had the shitty cgi Luke as a reference. If we would have access to the mocap footage, I'm pretty sure the deepfake would turn out much better.
The deepfake definitely looks better, but only when Luke is NOT talking. When he talks, the lips don't sync with the audio. If there's a way to fix that, then the deepfake would win hands down.
There is a way to fix that, using a real person as Luke and using deep fake on top. It would be awesome.
Thank you for everything book of boba fett episode 6 cgi and voice amazing
Good job on the latest episode!
Looks like the original has a different nose and 5 O’clock shadow.
He’s slowly turning into the old master Luke
@@emanuelhadfield7342 yeah it is set 5 years after ROTJ which means he must be just getting age 30 or 31
@@kalebrod2823 actually he's 28
@@phantomias19 Oh you're right, he would be that age, I miscalculated in adding 3 years after Empire but it was just a year.
Not perfect but MUCH better. The original is horrendous.
The biggest problem with the original is the lip movement, it's almost non-existent and doesn't affect the rest of the face, it's like he's had a ton of botox. The words don't match the mouth shape at all. E.G. The 'Nothing' in "Talent without training is nothing" line doesn't match at all. That's what the real problem is. And that same problem remains with the deepfake. Fixing the mouth alone would improve this more than anything.
Yeah, deepfake can’t fix bad animation.
That and the lack of facial expression, yeah he's a Jedi and they're supposed to be emotionless but he's basically a robot lol.
I’m not sure why they didn’t use Deepfake at this point. That was my first thought when I originally saw this scene.
Totally agree
I'm not saying that I necessarily disagree with you I just want you to do me a quick favor and say the word nothing out loud while looking in a mirror.
Was that your work in EP6 of Boba Feet? Yooo, congrats! And nice job!
Now you got to convince them to let you deepfake the entire Han Solo film with Harrison Ford.
