Sandman is Dream. He creates everything that we dream about. Not a hero or a villain. If he had an alignment it would be lawful neutral. Cares a lot about rules but not much about people. He is immortal so there would be time jumps in the story from the past to the present. And since he rules the Dreaming we will also be shifting from our real world to the dream world a lot of times.

It is a comforting thought that as chaotic as dreams can seem, the very embodiment of dreams would be lawful neutral.

I love that in the world of Sandman, Dream is incredibly stern and rule-oriented, while Death is kind and empathetic. A lot of paradoxes like these in the series.

@@ImVeryOriginal There's nothing inherently wrong with death. Humanity, irl, has just become embittered to it as medicine + medical technology has improved and allowed many to escape it. People used to be pretty chill about it, like the wind, because it was inevitable and sometimes welcome. They didn't assign the connotations of cruelty to it like we do today. So, I'd say less a paradox and more of a return to old sentiments. Or, y'know, whatever 😅

    • @Ragdefender
      @Ragdefender 2 роки тому +6

@@ImVeryOriginal I read a very good observation about this. Each of the Endless also define their opposites. They are both sides of the coin. Destiny is always about choice. Destruction is always depicted as an artist and creator. Death has always been about life. So this would imply that Dream somehow also represent hard reality.

Comics readership has shrunk, and leans pretty old, as media goes. Sandman was already well-known (and well-loved) when I read it in 2000. Most folks under 40 probably never even heard of it, and those that have mostly seem to have gotten in via the recent celebrity-heavy audiobook release, not so much the comics.

That wasn't a dragon that was a gargoyle. Like people have said Dream is neither hero nor villain, he and his siblings exist out of necessity. So long as creation exist, Dream and the rest of The Endless will exist. The Sandman is a DC character, Neil Gaiman made the character based off of the old fairy tale of the sandman and turned it into a graphic novel.

He has fantastic judgement for casting and from the interviews i've seen, I feel like this is going to be amazing.

This has nothing to do with Spiderman :) It's an entire comic book series out there doing its own thing and it was amazing and dark. Basically, the Sandman is Dream which is one of the seven immortal forces in that world. Another person in the trailer was "Death" which was the sister with the ankh necklace. The names of the other five forces begin with "D" as well and they'll be revealed as the series go on.
I'm hopeful for the series, but the comics are worth a read regardless. It set the tone for alot of indy comics going back through the 80s and 90s.

The Sandman AKA Dream isn't a hero or an anti hero, more like a primordial cosmic entity within the DC universe . Technically he's not even a being, he's a living idea and a force of nature, he's not good or evil he's just necessary, he creates every dream and every nightmare
He has 6 siblings who are also living concepts
His other brothers Destiny and Destruction, his older sister Death and his younger siblings Desire, Despair and Delirium

    He is Dream.
His family and his friends called him Morpheus, but humans gave him a lot of different names; the most well-known is Sandman.
The Sandman is a mythical character in European folklore who puts people to sleep and encourages and inspires beautiful dreams by sprinkling magical sand onto their eyes.
He has nothing to do with Marvel's Sandman. Spider-Man's villain is a guy made of sand. Morpheus is a very important aspect of life.

As far as I'm concerned, there are only TWO 20th Century, English language, works of literature that achieve a level that could make them comparable to the works of Shakespeare or Dickens or Milton.
One is THE LORD OF THE RINGS by J. R. R. Tolkien.
The other is THE SANDMAN by Neil Gaiman.
It maybe too scary, too dark, too high-brow, too esoteric, too depressing, to appeal to everyone, but to those who can crack its code will find a body of literary work that is absolutely unmatched by any other writer in the English speaking world. You can imagine how hard it will be to adapt this to television and also how long people have waited to experience this.
You owe it to yourself to read the comics when you get a chance. It's heartbreaking and terrifying and deeply, deeply, humanistic.

Dream of the Endless aka Morpheus aka Oneiros aka Morpheus aka the Sandman is part of a family called, well, "The Endless". A group of 7 beings namely: Destiny, Death, Dream, Destruction, Desire, Despair, and Delirium. They're not heroes, villains, anti-heros, nor even gods. They're beyond all that. Dream of the Endless is not a manifestation or embodiment of dreams, he IS dream. Same applies to the 7.

Sandman the comic is kind of a story *about* stories, so it'll be interesting to see if this series mostly follows the "main plot", such as it is, or explores the rich side stories that made it great. It's kind of like if every 2 of 3 Twilight Zone eps were part of a running storyline.
If y'all are gonna react to it, *don't* read the comic first - the show is definitely playing around with timeline & characters, and you'll have a fresher POV if you go show-only (at least for now).

@@hermeticallysealed1 Starts with "Preludes", yes, but Gaiman said they're going to mix in some elements (characters?) from later issues. So the advice to watch the show "fresh" still holds.
Generally I advise anyone to watch the movie/show/anime first - it's a more condensed version, usually geared to shorter timeframes, and gives you a solid sense of if this is for you. Then go to the book/manga for more nuance & details (assuming a book-to-film adaptation).

I teach 3rd grade and read aloud Odd and the Frost Giants, The Day I Swapped my Dad for Two Goldfish, and The Wolves in the Walls each year to introduce them to his writings. If you’ve ever heard of the movie Coraline, that was based upon one of his young adult novels.
