- Disney's live action Snow White movie has continued to get backlash ever since the trailer released a few weeks ago. And now Piers Morgan has hosted a debate between The Critical Drinker, Nerdrotic and a comedian who on the side of Disney and was arguing for why Snow White is a good movie. The debate raised some pretty good points as to why Snow White, Rachel Zegler and Disney has been so heavily criticised, and so I do my best to highlight the best points of the debate here and try to analyse this entire Snow White situation.

Snow White was a grim tale from 1812. So the story has lasted more than 200 years. Rachel ziegler will not be remembered
Snow White is a lot older than that. The Grimm brothers collected German folktales that were told time out of mind from generation to generation in their local Germany. They made it their academic mission to record the stories for posterity before they were lost. Culturally all these fairytales/folklore both from the Grimm Brothers and also nursery rhymes are hugely important works and honestly messing with them does a disservice to all of us who value European cultural heritage. Disney have always played fast and loose with the original stories but the current crop are a bloody travesty. See also how they are taking a wrecking ball to Tolkien, one of the greatest writers in the English language (which is a particularly high bar) who’s work is again hugely culturally important to anyone actually from the these islands. Disney don’t seem to care what they are doing. They are intellectually bankrupt

Remaking Snow White with 2024 "sensibilities" was absurd from the beginning. White people=bad so the namesake of the protagonist doesn't make sense. Love for a man=bad so no true love for our protagonist and all the enrichment that can bring to her life. Woman doing domestic labor=bad so let the protagonist mooch off the dwarves and not contribute, that's a likeable quality. They fail to realize femininity is strength. Disney thinks turning into a man is strong. Ask any guy out there, from a construction worker to a lawyer to a drug dealer…they’ll all say their mom was strong AF because emotions are a vital part of life. I wouldn't say art is "supposed" to preserve history. Art is whatever you want it to be. Whether it is completely fictional, a message of it's time or even wishful thinking of what you hope that time would be. If you want to make a new version of a story you are welcome to do it, even the previous snow white movie is an adaptation of a story made before movies where even a thing. Peoples don't have to like your choices though.
And they shouldn't be surprise that the peoples that liked the previous story are put off by their choices.
And yes, older stuff not fitting modern society is perfectly normal, it is crazy to think otherwise. As if society isn't evolving at all.

The original movie is a watered down and infantilised version of the Germanic folk tale in the first place. Disney has been an abominable blight on European folklore ever since they got into the "fairytale" business. This is a bad remake of a bad remake.
It's odd that they expect 21st Century gender politics in a Medieval folktale.
If they wish for greater ethnic diversity there is an almost bottomless well of folktales from other cultures outside of Europe. They supposedly want to reach a "global audience" so why not portray their stories. The difference is that the toons in Roger Rabbit were *supposed* to be cartoons. The dwarfs in Snow White are supposed to be as realistic as Snow White herself and they just look neither cartoon nor photo realistic, which is precisely the thing that lands them in Uncanny Valley.

“Have you seen Roger Rabbit” is a straw man if I’ve ever seen it. Roger Rabbit was a labor of love made with pure hand made animation about cartoons and humans living together. This is a remake that wants everything to look real yet ends up looking like ass because instead of just casting real people they chose CGI monstrosities
They probably used cgi because its cheaper than finding rare, real dwarf people that probably will be expensive to find enough. Considering the history of Roger Rabbit's tumultuous production, I'd hesitate to call it a "labor of love." Certainly one of persistence, but one that upset many people and drove a few others crazy.
I mean, the biggest blunder of this movie is to suggest that a queen who looks like Gal Gadot would somehow be envious of Rachel Zegler's beauty and feel threatened by it. Suspension of disbelief can only be stretched so far.

Idk why he even thought that was a good point. Mary poppins had live action and animation way before Roger rabbit and it played well because they didn’t try to dress up the animation as live action. In Snow White it’s as if they were going for photo realistic CGI then gave up half way. So the uncanny valley comment from drinker make a lot of sense. Your brain is less ok with things that look somewhat different versus something starkly different.

Everybody knows the story of Snow White. If you change the story dramatically, it's NOT Snow White anymore. If you want to tell a different story, write an original story, but Disney is terrible at writing original stories in recent times.

Considering Disney has almost never wrote an actual, original tale outside of their Mickey cartoons, I'd be more concerned if they started trying. Nearly all of their films are folktale adaptations which already disqualifies them from the "original story" title.

Believing in true love leads to bad outcomes for people in real life.

They're eating up a lot of their box office losses through creating a subculture of people addicted to their parks & products that they've continuously jacked up prices while decreasing the quality, sadly.
I have a sibling who's in his mid-30s where he and his wife use their kids as an excuse to blow the majority of what they save up each year on a trip to disney. Half their clothes, toys, etc. are all disney merch and suffer the similar jacked price for subpar quality. I struggle to find them proper gifts because a lot of what they ask for is disney crap. Any time I visit them, the parks become a forced conversation topic at least once. Many other similar cases & I honestly wish these people had booze or weed as their addiction so at least they'd maybe have a bit more money left over and a better chance for some self-awareness to see the shamefulness of their addiction.
They didn’t use actual dwarf actors because after making millions as a dwarf actor, Peter Dinklage said being a dwarf actor was demeaning, so Disney decided to use CGI dwarves instead.

There's 7 dwarf characters in this film, and only a handful of known-name Hollywood dwarf actors. If they used dwarves then that's a flooding of a small market and the Dink probably wouldn't get a chance to demean himself for megabucks anymore (Warwick Davis' career stalled after PD became the go-to dwarf casting directors wanted).
They don't even actually need real dwarf actors. They could do same thing Lord of the Rings & The Hobbit did to make dwarf characters using prosthetics and camera techniques. If they did it in 22 years ago why can't Disney do it also now? Maybe because director and staff is incompetent.
