How To | Installing a Police Horn in my Jeep (Whelen Airhorn Plus with Public Address Function)

- I show you how to install and wire the Whelen Airhorn Plus with Public Address Function (True Police Horn). Specifically in this video I show you on a Jeep Wrangler TJ.
The Whelen 100 watt electronic air horn plus has a PA function that features a high gain microphone. The PAP112 horn sound level is legal (in most states.) This is the same air horn used by Police, Fire and EMS. The PAP112 can be wired remotely to the stock horn of the vehicle or to a separate momentary switch.

I also had to get some other components separately from Fry's Electronics.
I got a small green momentary switch to activate the horn.
I got a red and a black 25 foot 14AWG copper wire stranded
A 30amp inline fuse holder (you will use a 20amp mini fuse though)
A strand of shrink tube.
I also got some ring connectors and weather proof butt connectors from the auto parts store.

Just did this on a little sport trac. Added a CB w pa too. Wire loom was a god send and keeps everything clean looking and protected. 🔊🔊🔊

good tip for running neg and pos wires that are seperate stick them in your drill chuck and twist em together with the drill makes it look neat keeps em together

Thats actually cool! Just a horn and no siren! Not all sirens have air horns But this is perfect for fire trucks with no air horn! I should probably gonna use it in my firetruck animations

Nice install. FYI the PAP112 is only rated for one 100 watt speaker.
I use the same model in my XJ Cherokee and my Tahoe. Best horn ever, and legal to use on a civilian vehicle.

Cool installation. To protect the speaker may be you could put a plastic shroud of some type over it with a screw? Great details.
I would think the speaker would be fine either way. That is how the police mount them.

It should be legal in most states. It's just a horn, no siren. To be safe, check with your state
@@mikegoldenGames Thats what I was thinking, I never thought it would be an issue to just have a cop airhorn without the siren. The states in question where I drive the most are MD and NJ. Thoughts?
You should always try to run the negative side directly to the vehicle chassis, not all the way back to the battery. I don't know how you have your second battery connected, whether it's completely stand-alone, or if it connects to the other battery and charging system. I would understand if the second battery isn't connected to your jeep's main electrical system, but then how do you charge it?

I'm not sure. There may be options on the horn box, but I only messed with the volume option

@@eduardodelatorre2411 the box is only a horn and PA system. No siren. There are other models that have a siren, but not this one

i need to go through and completely redo all of my set up. unfortunately i have a Code 3 RLS 3997. it's a little glitchy, but it happens every once in a blue moon

Awesome video appreciate it, one favor when you use a drill try to not push so hard or buy a Milwaukee . Last after a battery connection 6" maxi fuses cheap easy so you don't catch fire to that jeep

Thanks for uploading. Great video. I know you said you got your momentary switch at Fry’s Electronics, but they appear to have closed for business. Do you have any specs for the momentary switch or where to buy another? I’ve checked everywhere, but don’t want to buy the wrong momentary switch.
Any momentary switch will work. Just depends on what you want. The one I got was just a small push button. You could also just hook it up to your car’s horn. I didn’t do that for mine, since the clock spring was broken on mine, so the horn didn’t work

I don’t remember but the main cost was the sound box. The speaker was $100. The wires and everything else was maybe $20 or so

Danny DeVito off the top of my head, I don’t believe so. It’s a solid unit.

The only thing I thought was ok was the mounting location of the PA Horn/Speaker. The wiring however looks very Micky Moused and unprofessional. I would recommend getting a good soldering iron, a real crimp tool and split loom tubing to protect the wires!
From the wire harness what colors go to the switch

Yeah, I took it out when I got my 2004 Rubicon and haven’t reinstalled it yet.

It's in the video description, but it is 14AWG copper wire stranded. Everything else came with the kit
Ha Ha!...my k1500 is going to have a tactical look when completed and this will be great to use at an intersection when the driver in front of me is too busy looking at their phone to notice that the light is green....DRIVER, DROP YOUR PHONE AND MOVE YOUR VEHICLE NOW!...they look in their mirror and see a dark gray swat team truck on it's way to a hostage situation....of course I will look in my mirror to make sure there is no cop that is wanting to make me a hostage.

Not here to shit on the guy but as a mechanic and electrical installer this video hurt. Those aren’t wire crimps. Don’t use a knife on any step of this. Just unplug the battery so no wires are hot. Tuck your wiring. You should not need zip ties. If this looked like an informative video on installing to you then please go to a mechanic. Other then that it sounds nice which is why I came here

No worries I just got one brand new PAP112, did all the exact connections but was not working.
Did you get the horn working? Maybe a fuse was bad?

I wish there was a way to only have the electric horn. I dont need a PA system, sirens etc. Only that electric horn (when he pushed the green button).
You don't have to hook up the PA part of it, but this is the stripped down version, without the siren. I don't think they make one any cheaper

Don’t use which part on the street? In most states the horn itself is legal. The PA system can only be used on private property, at least in my state.

well worth the effort though. thank you for showing us the parts and how you did your install. I'll be getting the same set up for my Harley-Davidson. it's a cop bike so maybe I can find some wiring already there but not used. although a cop bike it was stripped of the good stuff before selling it to the public only to know.
