In this video I discuss all of the things I was reluctant to use or do. Mini painting, 3d printing, airbrushing, oil paints, contrast paints, and a whole bunch of other techniques I stupidly ignored for no good reason. I also build a really cool diorama.

Totally feel several of these "arguments." I used to feel like every drawing I made had to have some kind of meaning behind it. So most of my time was spent thinking about something clever to draw instead of just drawing for the fun of it. Opened a whole new world to me when I realised I could just do random, mindless doodles.

A long time ago I had a band member like this once. If what he was playing didn't make him feel a profound connection to the music, he grew to loathe it. His best stuff, both with audience reaction and enjoyable to play, was the parts he made up on a whim without being try hard. Most things he brought to practice never even got past vague ideas because they were "not ready yet". Or what I, or anybody else, decided to play along to his idea ruined it for him so he never brought it back lol. It's been a decade and he hasn't done that solo album of all these masterpiece compositions that were too good for the rest of us to influence.

Huge shoutout to @BlackMagicCraft, Jeremy, and the fine folks @Loot-Studios!

Your channel is what got me first into the hobby. The idea of building terrain with cheap and available materials helped me dismiss the excuses I’d usually make. I mean… I had a ruler… a blade… You showed me lots of amazing materials around me I had never even considered. As a fellow Canuck, XPS is a readily available resource I’d never even considered.
It’s been fun watching you grow and expand your skill set. My resources are still very modest as I’m not financially able to explore airbrushes or 3D printing atm. But I don’t think anything is ‘cheating’. I mean, if you are entering a contest, there might be established rules. Anything beyond that is primarily for your own purposes. Is that to get things quickly to the table? To develop mastery over certain techniques? To explore your creativity?
I think that certainly there are limitations that can be frustrating. There are a lot of shiny things out there allowing some really amazing results!

A little workaround, but you can use some virtual PC in cloud. like "Windows 365 Cloud PC" or "Vagon" or many others. You connect by browser or dedicated app and use a virtual PC in cloud like a normal one. You can install applications etc.

Well, don't take it the wrong way, but that's a bit like saying you were reluctant to renovate your attic because you could never be as 'artistic' as the Sistine Chapel. I take a bit of issue with people calling miniatures 'art' and painting them 'artistic', not the in the least because it sounds intimidating to newcomers and implies a degree of gatekeeping, if unintentionally. Fact of the matter is, for 95% of the people, they just paint stuff to look cool on the tabletop and it's rather a 'craft', than an 'art', relying on patience and practice of repetition rather than artistic creativity or talent. There's nothing to be intimidated about, anyone can do it and the thing you need is patience and not very much else. There's only a handful of people in the world that you could even start to consider 'artists' in the miniature painting sphere and that's still pretty debatable. Sorry if this sounds harsh but I have been doing this miniature painting thing for over two decades and I can't help but think the entire 'artistry' angle of the thing that's being pushed on youtube lately is a bit pretentious. I agree with the message of the video, I find BMC content fantastic, but at the end of the day, it's just toy soldiers and styrofoam terrain and that's okay, perfectly fine and super cool, we don't need to ascribe a lofty artisinal quality to it to make it feel more important. We're painting toy soldiers and there's nothing wrong with just leaving it at that.

Your videos got me to accept washes and textures (glued sand, gravel, cork, etc.) into my crafting, and I couldn't be happier to have let myself try. My very first crafted terrain was your dungeon tiles.
    -
Real Terrain Hobbies has gotten me to include grout powder and static grass into my terrain materials
    -
I have no idea which channel is responsible for me accepting water+PVA+plaster+toilet paper as a terrain material, but it has really improved my builds.

I remember when I was younger and would see all the cool terrain in White Dwarf magazine and in other publications and always thought it looked like something I would never be able to do. Then when I got back into miniature gaming after a 15-year hiatus I started watching this channel and others like Midwinter Minis, Eric's Hobby Workshop, and Dark Matter Workshop (to name a few). The first terrain video I ever watched was you building a fuel tank out of a can. The process you used, the painting, washes, etc. made me look at things a lot differently and start seeing the potential in everyday things. Especially "trash" and Dollar Store toys, and realizing I could build really cool-looking terrain out of common things by using some basic techniques. Now building terrain is one of the most enjoyable aspects of the hobby for me. I still like painting minis, but building terrain has become a new way for me to flex my artistic creativity. And I honestly have to thank you for that.

The washes to the terrain seem to have really lost that color he was so careful to put on... oh, he's adding it back with pigments..."

I now find myself with the full scale75 range, a bunch of vallejo/mig/greenstuffworld paints, a infinity cr+ 2in1, 5 raphael brushes, about 14 more brushes of mixed origin and a ton of colours/effects from different brands. A loot sub, citadel minis everywhere, hobby games with miniatures in them like zombicide, busts from renowned sculptors, oil paints from germany and I'm thinking to myself - wow, that escalated quickly.

Well, you continue to be a massive source of inspiration for this 1/12 scale action figure diorama builder. And funny that the thing that I love the most about my build process, blackwashing, was the thing that I was the most intimidated about... Until I watched your painting a stone wall tutorial over a year ago where you walked me through the whole process. I've thanked you before for that video and I will thank you again.

As a fairly long(ish) time subscriber, I’ve really enjoyed the process and journey you’ve been on with various tools and gadgets etc. I don’t have much in the way of crafting and hobby equipment, so seeing how you’ve got to grips with the various things has shown me what may or may not be worth my investing in, plus it’s just been great entertainment. Thank you for being honest and frank about how you’ve felt about things over the years, and here’s to seeing what the future brings!

I said "I'll never do minis and terrain - I'll just use these plastic pawns and squared paper". That was before I saw Black Magic Craft's 3x3 tiles. Now I have dungeon, jungle/forest, grassland and hills, sea and sand tiles, three 3d printers (one which lasers, too, which I have just started experimenting with), an airbrush and a to do list as long as my arm. It's all your fault! *shakes paint-flecked fist*

That's a great attitude; I really feel what you're talking about. The last few years I had really refused to approach new techniques and materials (my argument was "I'm almost at the end of my pile of shame, so I won't have to bother with anything new!" - but this year I've picked up an airbrush and started experimenting with oils - and suddenly I've painted more models in 2021 that in any other year since 1988 (when I started).
Looking forward to seeing what you'll do in 2022!

    Amazing inspirational video Jeremy, thanks!
I started the crafting/minipainting journey 2 years ago (actually yours was the first crafting video I ever saw), and I kinda had this mindset you described. If I couldn't afford it, I disliked it, and thought of it as cheating. And though I still can't afford quite a few things, I'm now looking at them as goals or opportunities instead of something to be against.
What I'm currently building up the courage for is to finally start using resin in my crafts, I've bough 5 min epoxy a looong time ago, had many ideas for it, but always "somehow" decided to go with another project that doesn't use it. I'm always aftraid that I will just ruin the whole thing.

When I started mini painting, it was just a basecoat, wash, highlight. Layering? Nah, too tedious.
I tried layering once for fun. Had a blast. I was still determined to paint faces with a basecoat and wash though. Too tedious to layer up something like that. And eyes were a no go.
Then I tried it. It was fun! Just whites for the eyes though. And metallic paints for metals, because NMM is too tedious.
I tried NMM on a model. Had a lot of fun. But still no pupils in the eyes, because just NO.
I've recently started painting pupils in their tiny little eyes.
If that's all tedious, then apparently I enjoy tedium.

I used to do a lot of hand drawing and digital art, and one of the biggest bad habits was the mindset of "Using references is cheating". Breaking that mindset is tough, but once you do, it opens up so many possibilities for learning, and growing, and improving

Jeremy this whole video resonates with me. I picked up mini painting 3 years ago, thinking it would be a short hobby foray into something I won't be good at because I am not artistic. over the past 12 months I painted well over 180 models. People often say that they wouldn't be as good as I am, but it's just because they never tried. We are used to having to make excuses for why we don't want something or don't want something. We "need" to have an opinion. This forces us to often form the wrong opinion just because it's the easiest thing.
For what it's worth: I also thought your terrains were complicated. But then I watched several videos and saw the processes and realized it's not so much. Sure there is expertise and creative thinking to be had, but ultimately the individual steps are relatively simple. Now I am making terrains now and then just for the fun of it.

That rust effect looks REALLY GOOD!!! Do you have a video or a list about how you do them and which paints were used? Also, I was mind blown for you scraping and painting pastel dust on the mini!
I myself have been mainly a display painter, so when the contrasts came out I was excited about them, but I was not nearly excited enough for what they could do to my painting. I have gotten a lot faster, and instead of painting super high detail, I am happy with painting them to a decent standard where I can bash them out quick, and painting many models to that level over painting one model to a higher standard just feels more satisfying to me ♥

Absolutely awesome video. I've bumped into your content a few times over the past few years, but being as we existed in different parts of the hobby space, I only ever occasionally watched. But here you are now, harnessing all the artistic tools at your disposal, and I'm super excited to see what you've got in the pipeline. Absolutely subscribing after seeing this.
For me, the tool I was afraid of was the airbrush. I was just so worried about the amount of maintenance and the learning curve behind it. Turns out, with a cheap and durable airbrush to learn on, my fears were absolutely put to rest, and after only a few months I absolutely love airbrushing. Here's to always learning more!

This christmas my wife and I decide to get a hot wire cutter to get into modular terrain builing as well, to level up our Warhammer and D&D games. And who knows where we will go, after we get comfortable with terrain building. Air brush? 3D Printing? Maybe. It all sounds cool!
