The truth is, human / bear encounters are steadily on the rise and have been for quite some time now... The bear that killed the woman here was emboldened by the fact that they have no fear of humans... it was raiding chicken coops... that's how they found it... it was raiding another chicken coop. I've actually spoken with wildlife biologists in my area and they agree... it's time to start managing these bears and building a healthy respect for one another like we have with the Black bears.
Speaking of the Rut...Like you say, mid Sept is a good guideline and for the most part and on a year over year basis holds true. However, I had Bulls bugling, thrashing like crazy and being super aggressive here in northern Utah on Sept 4th this year. First time I’ve seen it that aggressive that early that I can remember, but just get out and put some miles on your boots because you never know. Like you say, if nothing else it’s a great scouting and patterning opportunity. I had a guy ask me at the gas station on the way up why we were headed up so early and not waiting for the rut. Are handguns more effective than bear spray?. Even a .454 magnum or .500 S&W has less stopping power than a magnum 12 gauge slug, or magnum rifle such as a 338 winchester
Statistically bear spray is more effective. Most people don't practice with a handgun enough to be accurate when adrenaline is pumping as a bear charges you. Brandon carries both in instances like this, especially in the year of this hunt because bear attacks were off the charts, including a 38 year old outfitter that had a bear and cubs come back to them after leaving once. The sow killed the outfitter and mauled the hunter. Bear spray is Brandon's choice for quick and sudden encounters. The pistol comes out if there is time and/or if the bear returns after being sprayed with bear spray. Any way to level out the volume? Super quiet whispering and then the music blows out your tv and ears. Same when they were elk calling. Way loud and then you can’t hear them talk. Unpleasant to watch unless you have your finger on the volume button non stop. Other than that nice job.
That tipi tent is a Tentipi. LOVE THAT SHELTER!!! I looked long and hard for years for the best wall tent and I think this is it. It is canvas, weighs only 45 pounds and fits in a backpack. Really portable and sturdy and waterproof. GREAT IN THE WIND! We have a video on it... just search Tentipi on or channel and it should come up.
