- Here’s Why You Been Gone so Long, the Mickey Newbury song that first appeared in bluegrass form on the New Kentucky Colonels album Live in Sweden 1973. I’ve transcribed Clarence White’s guitar breaks, Roland White’s mandolin, and the vocal parts for a class I’m about to teach on Clarence’s guitar work on this seminal album, recorded merely two months before his tragic and untimely death.
The class meets for five Sundays on Zoom, from March 5 - April 2. The 5pm ET section is full so I’ve just added a 3pm ET section and as of now there are a handful of openings in the noon ET section. Please DM if you’d like to reserve a spot or have any questions. Full info is here in my 2023 Online Course Schedule:

We will be diving deep into Clarence’s lead and rhythm playing on 10 songs: Why You Been Gone So Long, I’m Blue I’m Lonesome, A Good Woman’s Love, Blackberry Blossom, Take a Whiff on Me, Soldier’s Joy/Black Mountain Rag, I Know What it Means to Be Lonesome, The Last Thing On My Mind, and The Prisoner’s Song. In addition to live instruction students will receive detailed transcriptions plus learning videos, multitrack audio, and access to Zoom class recordings for review. Two sessions feature very special guest visits: one from flatpicking giant David Grier who was mentored by Clarence as a young person. The other is Alan Munde who played banjo on the album and will share firsthand experiences of making this music.

The first time I felt happy today was listening to this.
Incredible. Great recording quality, great picking, and great singing. Long live the “Daves Brothers”!
Dude. So good. You have a fantastic bluegrass voice. Great playing too!
Get it man
So good!
I've just found your post and all I can say is BRAVO ! You sound just great , I love it along with Roland , but Clarence will always be my hero , and it sounds like he's yours too ... thanks
Love this version! 👍
Nice!..............................................
rocking the harmonies! great job.
Nice, nice, nice!
Great stuff Michael paying homage to the GOAT
Brilliant!
there's a lot of renderings of this song and your's is the one I like the best. I want to use it to introduce a bluegrass song to non bluegrass pickers. I think it will work. it just has a great vibe to it.
Fun! Cool stuff.
Oh hell yeah
That's really wonderful... Masterfully played
Thanks!
And again, top stuff, thanks Mate.
good job picking AND singing!!
Love it. You really channeled the Clarence vibes here.
The Clarence vibes are ineffable but I finally decided to throw my skirt over my head and see how close I could get. IMO not that close but thank you!
Great version.
Wow !well done ❤
Very good!
gotta love that blood harmony! ala Everlys
killer
That's some sweet stuff!
Mycket bra !
Great rendition. Did anyone ever tell you that you two look like you could be twins?
Dude...this version blows the Clarence White ( the new Kentucky Colonels ) version out of the water!...and that's saying something... Clarence was a legend...all those guys...Chris Hillman and Herb Pederson. Check out Dan Fogelberg with these great players on his 'High country snows' album from 1985
just imagine what Clarence could have sounded like with more modern recordings and Mics .....not to mention what he would have developed into ...RIP, gone too young and too soon !
do you provide tutorials (paid is fine!). just trying to fully get your solo riffs down
What are the chords please
C F G Capo 5
WOW , good one!
