- I tried to be as detailed as possible and get video of anything and everything on this mower because this is the kind of thing I was looking for before I bought it and couldn't find any review like this. If there's anything additional you want to know about the mower feel free to ask. Also check out the community I just started over at reddit.com/r/electriclawnmowers
I'm not a sponsor or paid by Walmart / Hart or any other company in any way. Just wanted to produce an informative video for those interested in this mower.
To the point without clickbait and unnecessary filler. Thumbs up. :)
The removable batteries are a game changer. Amazing feature for this competitive price point.
Nice review! This was the first “real review” of this mower I could find, all the others were not owners just kept replaying the Hart demo.
Finally an actual video of this mower they’ve been out for a while. I haven’t seen any actual reviews of them, so thank you so much for your review. I’ve been interested in seeing one of these in person and howard actually compares to a Ryobi.
1983 I cut my first lawn professionally. Be nice...I love the evolution of the machine. A lawn ornament of mine is a 1920's rusted out reel mower. On a marble stone base surrounded by flowers...it's really pretty. Gas mowers may be ornaments too one day.
I've never seen one of these in person. Very nice. I can see myself getting one of these on clearance.
I hear so many people say. "My wheels spin when it's wet". " The mower does not pick up wet grass".
You are not supposed to cut when the grass is wet. Moisture increases the chance of fungus, mould and disease.
Great video. Thank you for sharing. Thank you for showing how it cut the grass. Very helpful info
Thanks, I really just wanted to see the battery compartment! Really Helpful!
Thanks Matt. I just got one earlier this week and plan on doing a review myself. Hoping to also grab the bagger to go with it
Wave, are your replacement batteries $900 apiece? I’m wondering if I should buy this mower and one of my concerns is the cost of replacement batteries
I will look at the Hart but for now my trusty Toro Timemaster helps me do my .60 acre. Just wish the Toro had pneumatic tires, front casters and a gal tank.
Thanks for the video review. It helped me!
Great Video Matt. Thanks for sharing!
Nice demo, thanks
I don't know about the riders, but I own both a Hart and a Ryobi walk behind, both 40 volt, and even though they are made by the same company, the batteries do not interchange.
I appreciate the review and I ended up purchasing one. I only have about 1/2 acre, so I couldn’t justify buying the $6,000 zero turn I wanted, but this should do the job.
J Dee, are your replacement batteries $900 apiece on this mower? I’m wondering if I should buy this mower and one of my concerns is the cost of replacement batteries
@@reality1958they shouldn’t have to be replaced for a long while (5+years) and by then, they should be a lot cheaper
@@waynereibsome I hope so. It’s now down to this mower and the Greenworks!
Almost one year later, has yours held up well?
Adult Power Wheels! Nice review
Some great improvements since we bought the first RYOBI 5 years ago….but it’s been pretty good for us…..we’ll see if we can get another 5 out of it at least….
My RM480 went 5 yrs. on the first set of batteries and paid for new ones in savings at 54 months. Upgraded from 75 ahr. to 100 ahr. batteries. Mower runs better than new. Absolutely NO maintenance issues in 177 hrs. of run time. DOD is down 2%, so new batteries should last even longer.
Great video thanks!
Great Video!
Thanks for the very detail review ! This mower does not have anti scalp wheels for the cutting deck, do u think it needs it? Thanks in advance !
Thanks for the info.
This looks like the best buy for a small riding mower. The gas ones are so chincy and every one has problems from starting to service work. At least a battery and motor combination should be a lot simpler. Cub Cadet makes one also, but it costs a lot more, and I see no advantage they have over yours. Happy mowing, if there is such a thing, LOL
Thanks Matthew! The first actual review of this mower that I've seen. The bagger looks awesome with that blower installed if it gets plugged. Are you going to get it?
Yeah, planning on getting it closer to Fall when the leaves are coming down. I've always had a problem with how to handle leaf collection and that'll make it much easier
This is such a Great Investment Opportunity.. These Companies are Only going to Grow, as this Influencing Trend
Continues. $3000 is a Lot of Money for a $300-$500 Mower..
Good review. I had this mower shipped yesterday. Is there a neutral position? I couldn't find it on mine. Haven't mowed just put it together and parked in shed.
I'm pretty sure the reverse mode is for backing up while mowing and not reversing the blades.
That is true of the Ryobi that this seems to be based on. You can go into reverse gear with or without the blades spinning. They recommend not mowing while in reverse. People recommend lots of things ... 😅
Great review - thanks! I see below u confirmed charger will plug directly into each battery. Have you confirmed they will also charge that way? My shed has no AC power. It's a bad idea to leave the batteries in a hot shed. It will degrade them prematurely if your shed gets hot in your climate. I'd like to remove the batteries after each use and store/charge them in my airconditioned garage. Also, any idea how much this mower weighs?
Looks good, however cannot find owners manual online or how to order parts (replacement blades).
I have a 38" gate. Can the grass black grass shoot easily be removed and replaced to enter gate?
I am was looking at the hart but do not like the suitcase battery packs as after the 5 year warranty runs out and the batterys fail, You are looking at a $1600 based on the royobi suitcase type. I am looking at the new green works 30inch model when they release it. It has a more affrodable replacment batterys, Not sure I would go with the hart on this after there 40volt electric mower batterys fail.
Was that a Suzuki TU 250 in the shed? Wish you would do a video on it if it is.
Thanks
To say that the batteries should last 10 years remains to be seen.
I have 7 Ryobi 40 volt packs of various ahr. and so far (3 yrs for the oldest), no issues with any of them. I use them in rotation so they get evenly used. I have had one 18 volt Ryobi pack fail after 13 years and 2 more are 14 years old , but showing degradation when used under heavy load (circular saw). Again, all six are used in rotation. The life span of any of the 80 volt lithium packs in the riders is up in the air until they start failing.
It appears that the Ego 56 volt ARC packs are starting to fail after 3-5 years. No idea how they are being used/abused, but I have neighbors with them that are failing. One is looking into changing platforms (brands) because of the bad life spans.
@@jfrye6057 I've heard similar things with the EGO batteries. I have to wonder if it has anything to do with the rapid chargers they use. They claim to have advanced battery tech and cooling, but that's more than likely all marketing.
@@e.z.e.932 Don't know, but the 40 volt Ryobi batteries I'm using with their rapid chargers are OK so far. the rapid chargers have fan cooling and the batteries have internal temperature sensors that communicate with the chargers. Again, time will tell.
I'm on my 11th year of my Ego mower and other tools. Original blade and battery, and it all runs and works like day one. I take proper care of my things and keep my batteries inside the house. I can see them degrading if people leave them in a non temperature controlled garage, which I know a lot of people do. It gets too cold in the winter and too hot in the summer for them.
if i got this i think its mandatory to get a circuit put in my shed... that or some solar set up
I'm thinking about making the switch now that the decks are small enough to fit thru a standard gate. How about accessories? Is there a bagger available?
Yea
Parts availability for these as they get old is going to be a problem, which is why $3000 is steep. You can get a John Deere tractor for that price.
What parts do you think would wear out? Most wiring and electrical parts are pretty generic besides a main control board.
The thing is not worth $3500 in my area maybe for what you paid for it might be worth it. But the price has got out of hand. Hope it gives you long lasting service.
bought a nice less than 100 hr used john deere x384 for less than that. I wonder whos mower will last longer :) that deck looked really flimsy
How wide without the deck?
Can you turn off the reverse beeper? That seems annoying and unnecessary. Aside from that this seems like a great little "entry level" electric rider. Thanks for the review!
Just disconnect the speaker!
What's the Motorcycle in the storage building? I don't recognize the tail light
I think it is a Suzuki TU 250x, if I'm not mistaken.
I don’t have an outlet outside (I live in a rental) how heavy is the charger?
The charger is pretty heavy but I brought the charger and batteries inside to stay charged all this winter.
I want it let's see if it goes on sale this year.
It's on sale right now
In all, are you happy with it so far? I wanted something small and was looking for the electric type and the only thing I can find is the hart version.
I'm very happy with it so far. Kind of overkill for the size yard I have but so much nicer than a push mower. If I didn't buy this, I'd probably be paying over 3k to hire someone to mow. Check the r/electriclawnmowers subreddit. I have a list in there of many battery powered mowers and their basic stats
You said it got stuck on hills. I live on a hill. You think this would be okay on a dry day?
I think if Walmart was going to make an electric rider then they should of put some blades on the shopping cart scooter the fat people shop with. That would sell.
lolllllll
I think that's what this is.
I'm a big guy. Like 6'2 350lbs big. How much room does this have?
My roommate's about the same and he can ride it just fine.
Does it have cup holders and apple play?
Funny questions. 1 shallow cup holder. No apple play and no USB port. You're stuck with whatever you can get on your phone and with your data plan. Iheart radio and Spotify come to mind. Since it only has a 1 hour run time, I guess there's no need for a USB port.
Nice rider, but I think I'd rather see a review on your motorcycle.
So this is the same think as the ryobi lawnmowers same battery
Agreed, basically same as the Ryobi riding mower (not the zero-turn), except using the 80v rather than the 40v batteries. Both brands are owned by the same company - TTI.
Thx
This uses the same battery pack, charger, included tools, and key as the RYOBI.
No it doesn't. Ryobi batteries not compatible with Hart. Similar is not same. Looks same. Different proprietary connectors.
@@claytonyoung1351 Oh is that true? I hadn't tried to swap them.
Can you charge the batteries outside of the mower?
I just checked, and yes the batteries can be plugged into the same charger that plugs into the mower directly

@@mushroom89 thank you very much for the reply and info.
Ryobi and Hart 40 volt batteries do not inter change I own both and the connecters are different.
This mower uses the 80v mower. It would have different connectors. I still haven't confirmed myself if the Ryobi 80v is the same as Hart
I realize that. What I am saying is the companies regardless of volt. Have different connecters. Pins are different. Guess my comment went right over your head.@@mushroom89
@scrambler69-xk3kv Do your own video, you clown. Maybe you can contribute something positive instead of being an Internet a hole.
I've read the Ryobi and Hart 80v batteries interchange with a simple plastic piece removed but still looking for additional confirmation. The packs do look identical and made by the same parent company which makes me feel that battery options will remain viable.
Was seriously considering this mower, but the Ryobi 80v replacement batteries are $900 apiece! That’s $1800! I think I’m going to have to go elsewhere
I've seen them for $500 each on discounted tool sites that I have used and trust. These batteries should last 10 years before needing to be replaced also. They're not like lead acid where you need to replace it every couple years.
@@mushroom89 I see. Could you please tell me those discounted sites? If I can get the batteries for that price I might just pull the trigger.
Also. Some sites on lawn mowers say that electric mowers last about 5 years and gas mowers 10 because they are more durable. Do you agree that electric riding mowers aren’t durable? Like the cutting decks for example? You are a big help thank you
@@reality1958 Direct Tools Outlet has big sales occasionally and I've seen the Ryobi 80v batteries for $500. A lot of people that are pro-gas mowers typically don't bother looking into battery options because of their bias towards gas. A battery mower can last just as long or longer than some gas ones. Gas mowers can still be made from cheap plastics and have the added cost and potential for needing repairs more often just by the nature of gas motors (oil changes, spark plugs, air filters, etc).
@@mushroom89 I see. Thank you so much…I will contact Direct Tools.
Something that a rep at Home Depot told me is that the mowing decks on a lot of mowers are not robust. He was telling me that the John Deere’s mowing decks are heavy duty.
But I only have a standard suburban 1/4 acre house lawn so that shouldn’t be a problem. I think you may have redirected me back to electric!
@@reality1958deck durability depends on type of yard mostly, for someone who mows every other week or etc with a decent flat land doesn’t need heavy duty decks. Since your not a mowing company.
wait, that thing seriously has a back up beep? LOL
I know lithium is more expensive but it is a better solution than lead acid.
$3500 now. Went up $500 in one day!
Well, the 80 volt Ryobi 0turn mowers went up in price by $2,000 after the initial pricing. Lithium ain't cheap.
... and Ryobi is "on sale" for $3500 now... soooooo...
I guess most of these little electric mowers dont have a floating deck.
No they are hung and float from the chassis. Some, like my RM480, have adjustable anti-scalping wheels on the corners of the deck
Nearly all of the 30" decks don't have anti-scalping wheels. Larger decks do.
1 hour run time though?
I can mow for an hour and the battery still at 90%.
Saw one of these in the store. Good price, but not built nearly as stout as the Ryobi RM480 48 volt riders. Big issue is the cost and ability to replace the battery pack. Just replaced the batteries in my five year old RM480e for $660.
The Ryobi RM480 has lead acid batteries doesn't it? At 48v and lead acid, I think the Hart's 80v lithium mower is a better deal.
@@mushroom89 Again, the cost of operation with electric riders is dependent on the lifespan and replacement cost of the batteries. The 75 ahr., 12 voltSLA/AGM batteries in my RM480e ran for 58 months, 160 hours of use, and 2,082 charges. It cost me $660 to replace them with 100 ahr. batteries which the savings over an ICE mower hit after 54 months. Few of these lithium powered mower makers will state the life span of their battery packs. Ego does state a limit of 1,000 charge cycles for their 56 volt packs. CubCadet doesn't state a limit, but the lithium pack in their electric riders costs $4,000 and requires a CC technician to service the replacement. FWIW, Tesla stated the first generation battery packs in their cars were good for 1,600 charge cycles (300K-500K miles) and cost $19,000 to replace. My point is that the lithium riding mowers haven't been around long enough to establish any sort of cost effectiveness regarding the batteries.
@@jfrye2475 Did you watch the video? This mower has removable lithium batteries. You can use the same ones Ryobi makes and they're $700 I think.
@@mushroom89 Yes, I did view the video and the batteries do look like the Ryobi 80 volt, 10 ahr. packs. The Ryobi packs list for $899 each. Didn't see any comparable Hart batteries listed anywhere. Again, no one is saying how many charge cycles these will do, and they haven't been in use long enough to see. When I bought my RM480e, Ryobi was saying about five years of life span for the Leoch batteries. The Ryobi system limits the Depth Of Discharge (DOD) to 30% (70% remaining) and Leoch stated the batteries should do 1,500-1,700 cycles at that DOD. Battery sites state the SLA/AGM batteries will do five times the 50% DOD rating at 10% DOD. The 50% DOD rating was 500-600 cycles, so at 10% DOD, they should do close to 2,500 cycles. My mower has a DOD of just over 10% and saved $685 in gas and maintenance over 54 months and the four replacement batteries cost $660 total. My question is: Will the lithium batteries last long enough to pass the breakeven point? The batteries in this Hart mower will cost $1,800 to replace. Will they last long enough to make it a cost effective solution?
@@jfrye2475 I don't have the time or interest to look into the specific rated number of cycles for the batteries or if Hart even has that documented anywhere, but typically Lithium batteries have a longer lifespan than lead acid, have higher capacity, and their easy to remove. Their capacity should be more since lead acid can't discharge past 50% without permanent damage. The cost difference between Ryobi's lead acid mower and Hart's lithium mower is not much. I would go with lithium.
$3000 😮. That’s insane. I bet they’ve sold….one of them. Yikes
For reference, a Toro 30" self propel walk behind is now $1500 (dinosaur juice)
@@wadeb.5509Dinosaur juice had me laughing.
I sure hope you have better luck with the riding Hart lawn mower than I had with the 40 V push mower that I think is a complete piece of s%!t. Mowed our little yard a few times and now the battery won't charge. What complete crap!
If you leave the battery on the charger all the time you will kill it. After you finish mowing go take a shower and when you are finished, but the battery on charge and as soon as it is fully charged remove it from the charger. Take it in the house do not leave it in an unheated shed or garage over the winter. Take it in the house during the summer months as well. These batteries do not tolerate temp. extremes. Not to hot and not to cold. Mine is three years old now and I can mow both mine and my neighbors yard on a charge. Little more than an hour run time. I love mine. 40volt 20inch walk behind.
Only peoplewho nothing about mowers cut grass when it's wet..how to destry a mower..!
Likewise for people who cut grass when it's wet...not good for the grass either.
My dad is 81. most cantankerous curmudgeon you could possibly meet. has a Yanmar tractor with rice patty tires and mows wet ground all the time. finish mower is completely rusted out and the yard is covered with ruts and grooves from the mower and the tractor.
Sorry man but $3,000 for a Walmart brand lawn mower is insane. You could've bought a nice John deere or cub cadet for that price and I guarantee that hart mower won't last anywhere near as long.
My 88 ariens gt18 will outlive any new machine on the market today
Love Hart tools but this color is awful for a riding mower. Looks like a child's and cheap which it ain't.
