He wanted to give everyone their own work with no one else getting the ‘shares.’ He used his life’s money to create a society hidden from the rest of the world so he and people who also believed in his ideals could live in peace. It’s such a wonderful idea, however unrealistic. I like to believe he had more faith in humanity than what should be given considering ego, greed, and narcissism. However, people who followed him eventually fell apart due to classic humanity flaws, such as ego, greed, narcissism, and ultimately insanity (thanks to the ADAM). He had to become the very thing he hated to try to keep order among his city, and ultimately, with the help of Jack (just my opinion here) realized Rapture could never be the utopia he wanted. And rather than fall as an enemy to his city, he chose to help his son realize he was being controlled while also choosing to die with his fallen city.
