StarLED T8 / T12 Ballast Bypass Instruction for LED G13 Bi-Pin Tube Light

  • This is the StarLED LED T8 ballast bypass video. Its purpose is to show you, step-by-step, how to convert your current 4 foot T8 or T12 fluorescent tube light fixture to use the StarLED ballast bypass LED tube lighting. If for any reason you feel that that the instructions are too complicated or you are unsure of project, we suggest using a fully qualified electrician to perform the task.
T12 fluorescent light bulbs use a G13 bi-pin socket and are currently being phased out due to their lack of being efficient.
T8 fluorescent light bulbs also use the G13 bi-pin socket and are more efficient that T12s, but not as much as LEDs.
Here you can see that both size tubes use the same G13 bi-pin socket.
To start, you will want to remove the lamp cover by taking out the screws.
Here you will see the exposed wires and of course the ballast, which we are going to bypass.
Next, you will want to locate hot or live wire. You want to redirect the power to the two yellow wires in this lamp fixture. The neutral wire in this lamp fixture will connect directly to the red and blue wires. Note that not all fixtures will have color coded wires so you will want to be sure what wires you are working with.
Clip the hot or live wire and the yellow wires which are just one side of each of the two lamp plugs. You are only wiring one side of the fluorescent lamp since StarLED ballast bypass LED tube lights get their power from one side. It really does not matter which side of the lamp holder you are using. You just want to make sure that you connect the hot wire to one side and the neutral wire to the other side. Here we are stripping the ends of the three wires to make a connection with a wire nut of the hot line and one side of each of the lamp holders.
Next, you will want to identify the neutral wire and the other two wires, in this case red and blue, which are attached directly to the lamp holders. You will want to cut the neutral wire coming from the power cable and splice them together with the red and blue wire using a wire nut. Make sure to tuck away all of the other wires and verify that nothing is passing through the ballast. Verify that the green ground wire is secure to the lamp housing.
Here is what your wiring should look like. Nothing passing through the ballast.
Close up the lamp housing and install the new StarLED T8 LED’s label side toward the power. This holds true with both the aluminum back ballast bypass LED T8 Tubes and the glass LED T8 Tubes.

I strutted like a rooster while watching the video, all the way to atwoods and picked up the t8 ballest bypass led lamps. Then I strutted to the music all the way back to my garage where I strutted while I bypassed the ballast and installed the new bulbs. Then I strutted in to show my wife who also heard the music and saw the lights working along with my strutting, and jumped my bones!! Thanks for...well everything!!

Look I am an Electrician, different manufacturers require the feed and the neutral in different locations. While this manufacturer uses the same tombstone for both the Neutral and the hot others do not. some require the hot wire on one end of the tube and the neutral on the other, Everyone should check to make sure which LED tube they use and it's associated wiring. this is not a blanket how to on all LED retrofits. Good luck in your conversions, they are well worth it in the end no matter which you choose!

cary lamari thanks man I'm an electrician trained old school by the book. I like watching these videos gives me an idea of what I'll be troubleshooting sooner or later. We've come a long way since I started the trade but 1 thing has remained the same, power has no conscience! good to see another electrician trying to give proper information, although I'd rather most people have an electrician do the electrical work no matter how small of repair or install, just to many code issues, product mods., applications, blah blah..

I like these LED conversions, I just wish the tomb stones were more hearty, they can break if a lay person installs the tubes and with these 110 v at the tombstone someone could get hurt. They really should have a fuse at the connection of the fixture in order to provide a second protection for service. But hey that may be the next revision of our code lol

    • @shanecrozier9196

Totally - the tombstones have to be the shunted type for this to work though - its worth marking on the fixture that it requires single ended tubes also.

This video is for single ended LEDs with the Line (L) and Neutral (N) pins on one end. You have to make sure the tombstones on both ends are non-shunted (the two inner connectors are electrically separate) or you'll have a short circuit.
Double ended LEDs have the Line (L) on one end and Neutral (N) on the other.

Suddenly he started flashing and after 5/10 seconds he was dead. I bought 2 V-TAC LED tubes mod. VT-1577.T8.G13.20W I cut off the power supply on the requested side, after installing nothing to do they don't work. To see if the ballast is working, what voltage or current should I find in the output terminal block that powers the tubes? Thank you, thank you very much. Can you help me, thanks.

OK, the music was somewhat distracting...but I never heard if they were one-sided or two-sided bulbs and whether the tombstones were shunted or non-shunted. Would that be more confusing? No, it would enable me to understand if I needed one-sided or two-sided bulbs. The way these were hooked up I'm assuming two-sided and non-shunted...but, without that info I could be wrong.

It depends on the type. There are some like that, known as "drop-in replacement" = "ballast compatible" = "plug and play" = "universal." Those you use with the ballast. You lose some energy savings. This video is for another kind, "retrofit" LED tubes. The man I talked to at the big box store didn't know much -- I had to do my own research.

Since LEDs only need to be wired on one side this video only shows what they did to the wires on one side. What's on the other side? At least show it tidying up IF they tidied up the side they werent using. Not very clear video.
