Thoughts on Playable Modular Eurorack Case Design

- I'm trying to document more of the decision making process of this case - talking about what went into it, whats working, not working, etc.
Even small steps towards an ideal is still progress.

As someone who is just getting into euro rack, and more broadly, synth-based music making, your videos really give me perspective of what I want out of my modular. Hearing how you're making decisions of what's in your case has really helped me find a direction, rather than just making noise.
Thank you!
Happy to help! I definitely don’t think that my cases are right for everyone, but that’s the beauty of modular. I do think being more deliberate about an approach and what you want out of it will result in a better outcome though. Even though collecting modules and just exploring is also fun, and kind of needed at times to even figure out what it is you want in the first place.
Very cool video. I haven't used a modular synth in over 20 years. This is bringing back good memories
That’s amazing! I love that!
Need to spend more time with my Grit. Thanks for the tips and badass beats.
Happy to help. 100grit is a fantastic module in my opinion. I’ve got a video specifically about the dual setup if you’re curious about that as well
Keep ‘em coming! Loving your ideas and sounds.
Thank you, will do!
love the cases!!
Hi I just thought I would mention again. You do not need to patch cable from the drum sequencer to the lxr module on the back of the drum sequencer are headers to connect 6pin ribbon cable that Erica synth supplies which you can connect to the lxr pin header on it’s backside it allows for both trig and accent!
I can't seem to make sense of this for the LXR - there isn't an obvious set of 6pins on the back and I don't see anything in the manual. Also the drum sequencer outs all seem to be individual sets of trigger/accents meant to send to lots of different modules, not in bulk to something like the LXR.
any advice?
@@thismeanswarbasse I think I am wrong I am so sorry! -would assume Erica synth’s had this on all drum modules I never new until I had to replace my drum sequencer I found no documentation on the hidden function
@@oracle-0018 all good! No worries at all
So awesome! Well done with the case and considerations! Seems super playable! I hadn’t thought about getting a joystick until seeing this one. In the case there’s a lovely mix of deep capable modules and hands on playability. I with you, as I explore, it’s all about walking up to the case without anything planned and have a whole bunch of fun making music with it. Did you start into modular with large cases from the get go? I have a 4u 104hp and wonder how you might scale your approach. Would it be about making the case less capable and prioritizing ergonomics or would you use modules that fit a smaller form factor?
Many thanks!
I started with a 62hp intellijel palette case and before I realized it I had basically just had built an expensive monosynth. I sold all of those modules and almost all my other traditional hardware synths and took another try with a groovebox in mind with the 7U104hp case. I got closer, but found I was trying too hard to replicate traditional gear. Meanwhile I was really enjoying my polyend tracker and I almost bailed on modular and went into field recordings with a Zoom and maybe a Lyra8 for fun - but then had the idea to just build my own case around that concept. A touch interactive field-recording stereo sample mangler - that become my A case.
My B case was initially just overflow space and I've spent the last while trying to find a clear direction and plan for it - which is finally coming together I think.
I'd lean towards less capable than smaller modules. I'm a sucker for wasting HP when its worth it. Hence the 2x100 grits and several larger modules in my cases. Ergonomics, creativity, and playability are just more important to me than building a full-featured box - which non modular setups will always just be better at.
@@thismeanswarbasse that’s such a cool journey. Like synthesizer pottery or something haha. I love that these cases aren’t your first go at it and that attempt at a groovebox wasn’t where you ended up. I think you’re right! The flexibility in modular seems to be in the power of being able to reach out to a knob without diving into a menu first. I’m in the spot of my case where I’m filling the last bits and deciding on interesting utilities and simple useful stuff like a mixer and that Endorphines dynamic processor is hard. Might be a bit of a mix between the two in the end. So far the way I’ve picked modules is figuring out what single module could provide the most interesting results with what I have. I’m definitely way off the initial plan and I think that’s been the beauty of building up slow.
@@thismeanswarbasse thanks for the perspective also! Loving these vids!
@@turbotambourine "I’m definitely way off the initial plan and I think that’s been the beauty of building up slow." sounds like you're going to end up in a really solid place though!
How do you find the cockpit? I’ve heard hot signals can bleed and Endorphines recommend attenuating hot modular level signals.
I’m setting up a very similar sample based techno case with a Bitbox, Nautilus and 100 Grit into the Cockpit and Golden Maser duo so signal levels might be pretty similar 😊
It's like a home internet provider, I know I need it for my house (this case) and its basically the only offering that I can pick from (1U stereo mixer), and it is almost always totally fine, but each time I have to really deal with it in any detail there's something annoying about it.
I've fixed one of those annoyances in this video: ua-cam.com/video/9c4hiYJz92g/v-deo.html but lately I'm equally annoyed about the output as well. It's labeled headphones, but I don't use it at all. Any time I've tried its sounds like its modular level and is totally blown (which might be what you're referring to with attenuating at the input). I daisychain it to golden master always now, but I'd like the flexibility of not doing that without dealing with a stereo splitter.
I think I've heard the bleed, but my music with this case isn't really bothered by it. I haven't had any attenuation-specific issues with how I use it. Those encoders have always been able to handle what I throw at it and turn down signals... though my audio path gets gnarly right after cockpit/golden master and not as much before it.

@thismeanswarbasse Have you noticed any major floor noise from your golden master ?
Sometimes but not always. Honestly with my particular sound and putting 100 grits after it now, it wouldn’t make a big difference to me so I try not to be too worried about it. Folks with cleaner signal paths overall might have more of an issue than I would.
@@thismeanswarbasse I'm in the same interpretation level. With all the hi hats and drones playing it makes no difference to me. I Was just trying to know if it is some kind of golden master definition/defect or just attitude. thanks.
You’re never going to get a girlfriend this way.
