    Modular Synth Lab is the way ❤
    If weren't them I would not started with my MDF 6mm 104HP 9U build (found finished design online), ultimately my eurorack journey would of went sideways if I could not order from them, and to figure out wiring. Some great people working there!
    Thank You for the Mean Well link to get that LRS 100 12 power supply, it's quite affordable 🎉.
    Great video, and you have built monster racks must admit.

    Matt, lovely to see. If you do MDF cases again I would suggest you simplify the design and avoid those cross cuts. Instead just to straight edge to edge (difficult to explain in text) and then just oil the MDF. Looks great.

    Great looking rig! One synth geek DIYer to another, if you want, I can take ~an hour and walk you through the free version of Fusion 360, recreate the same designs here so it’s something relatable to you. It’s far more intuitive to me than Sketchup and even the free version is vastly more powerful in ways I find accessible and get a lot of use out of.

    Hi Matt? Quick question, why rails on not full frames? Any advantages aside of cost? Are the rails attached directly into te wood or are you using side pannels? Thanks!

    • @pau.vilella
      @pau.vilella 2 місяці тому

      @@matthsmatthsmatths i meant “why rails AND not full frames”? Full frame is the whole chasis, including two rails + two side panels. The rails in this case are not screwed to the wooden case, instead they are screwed to the side panels of the frame, and the frame to the wood. At modularsynthlab they sell both the full frames or only the rails. I see you bought the rails only and I was wondering why. Hope this clarifies. Thanks!

    Hi Matt, lovely job there :) monumental. One aspect that came to mind, from owning several smaller cases (say 6 to 9u) was that of cooling. I find I have to turn my tall cases off during the hottest days, with heat rising and all that. I wondered if some (quiet / mellow) fan technology might go well with such a high volume of electronics?

    • @matthsmatthsmatths
      @matthsmatthsmatths  Рік тому +1

      Good point! Im not entirely sure but it might be best just having a fan blowing into the case somehow? I cut loads of vents in mind for airflow - the key is (of course) that hot air rises, so plenty of vents at the top is the way forward. Interesting point though mate

    • @joco9958

      @@matthsmatthsmatthsventilation wise it is always best to blow hot air out of the case instead of cold air in, you probably know this, just mentioning to be sure, cheerio!

    The extra material removed during laser cut is not your fault. They should have used offsets to compensate. Its acutally called "cutter compensation". So thats on them. Fyi.

    I've built 2 12U cases using JLR's modwiggler posts. It's all about the power supply. I went with the old Doepfer PSU-2's. 1.2amp, however is NOT enough. Too many of the VCO's and anything digital is really power hungry and I'm NOT really into digital modules but 2 or 3 is enough to put it over (or 90% capacity). I'm surprised being in UK you didn't go with a Hinton PSU and busboard. That man has it down to a science.
    I thought the Meanwell was a good choice in PSU and of course I found a modwiggler thread where they take turns slagging them. Go figure.

    Hey Matt! Great video, and very interesting - you're a braver man than me. I bought my case as best I could for my needs. Of all the questions I have(!), what was the paint you rolled onto the cabinets? I'm building a live audio rig, and need to make a dog box for my mixer. I'm pretty sure that's the finish I'm after. I was at GearFest at the weekend, and was going to say hello. However, got side-tracked and didn't see you again. Will try and hook into the live stream when you populate the case!

    Do you or Dan have an explanation of the diagram he showed you on a whiteboard -- the one explaining how to connect up you power supplies.I've been gearing up to build the power system in my own case and decided I'd also go with the meanwell LRS-100/150-12. There's a block in Dan's diagram with no lable, that combines the positive and negative power supplies. I'm assuming that's the buss board, but I don't know for sure.

    What is the issue with the other Meanwell power supply?
    How do you get -12V out of the Meanwell LRS-100-12? (And +5V, but maybe you don’t need that?) It seems to have only +12V output.
    Edit: I rewatched the video, and now noticed Dan’s drawing, using two PSUs to get +-12V. Thanks for the idea! I may go the same route with my new rack.
    And I guess the issue with the RT-65Bs would just be that you would need more of those.

    Hey MATTHS - please tell me about that Mean Well LRS 100 12 power supply; I cannot find 5V output on it anywhere, on Synthlab Bus Board 13:26 there is 5V wiring also, did you simply ignore the 5V input on Bus Board ?!
    The Mean Well RT65B has that 5V output, but this Mean Well LRS 100 12 doesn't !
    How did you wire your case, having 5V in mind, help me understand this part :)
    For example 4ms Rotating Clock Divider uses 14mA 5V, does this mean that - I couldn't use it with this Power Supply ???

    • @matthsmatthsmatths
      @matthsmatthsmatths  Рік тому

      Hey buddy. The mean well I chose does not have +5V so instead I have a couple of small gadgets but for me by DPW design which create +5V! I have not needed to use them because out of the nearly 100 modules I own, not one of them requires +5V. I think many manufacturers are moving away from +5V anyway. 👍🏻

      @@matthsmatthsmatths Hey thank you for sharing this insight with me, I was wondering "what now" when I found out that this 102W model is more then enough for 12U 104HP, but unclear with where is at with the 5V output :) - now is clear to me, this was your conscious decision to do so.
      Jes on ModularGrid when I look for consumption within the many rack's (from different people), most of the modules do not require that V5 support, which goes in favor of using this Power Supply. If used, should only take note of the V5 consumption out of the way and matter is resolved :)
      P.S. I found 102W to be cheaper then the 64W where I live (Bosnia and Herzegovina) for a 1/3 of the price, butiful !
