    One inaccuracy I'm surprised you didn't mention: at one point, the subadult Al is said to be *ten meters* long, larger than any known _Allosaurus fragilis_ or _jimmadseni_ and at least 25% longer than the actual Big Al specimen.

    IMHO The Ballad of Big Al is the superior version of the WWD format: First having a story segment with the life reconstruction and speculative behaviours, followed by a behind the scenes segment after the story concludes which shows all the science behind the story segment. Had this been the format for all the episodes of the original WWD, it would have been perfect.

In a dinosaur docu I'm working on, the ceratosaurus in one of the episodes will be portrayed to be as accurate as I can with him.

    Many living therapods have the females larger than the males, including eagles. That being said, the universal rule in sexually dimorphic animals tends to be that if the animal is larger, the males get bigger disproportionately. Either the smaller male gets closer in size to the female or the larger male gets further away.

    I'd like to add to the discussion for the first point about sociability in allosaurs being accurate with the loose gang idea by saying that sociability in modern archosaurs is in its infancy and that creatures that have been known to science for forever such as nile crocodiles and specticaled caimans have strict social hierarchies, have been observed to play and also make group kills, and use fish corraling techniques(yeah everyone thought it was amazing when whales were observed doing it.). My argument is that adverse or seasonally unstable enviroments, like that of the Morrison may lead to more social coheision and nuance than first meets the eye.

    Reading the comments below regarding the claims of sexual dimorphism in theropod dinosaurs, I feel a huge misunderstanding is at place and it must be clarified. I see multiple people are under the impression that the speculation for reverse Sexual Dimorphism/females being bigger in Tyrannosaurus Rex (this was never a claim made for all theropods in general btw) comes from the idea that in most modern birds of prey females are bigger then males. So there are multiple problems with this, first Tyrannosaurus (and especially Allosaurus) were not closely related enough to modern birds to where we can just say they would share sexual dimorphism patterns, between Tyrannosaurs and modern birds you have Dromeosaurs/Troodontids, Oviraptors, Therizinosaurs, and Ornithomimasaurs, and as you know moderns birds proper don't always share the same sexual dimorphism patterns with each other, and they are more closely related to each other then any of them are to the Dromeosaurs, the closest to the birds among the none Avian dinos, let alone to Tyrannosaurs and especially Carnosaurs like Allosaurus. Also carnivory in birds doesn't automatically = larger females, because nearly all birds are at least partially carnivorous, and when accounting all known 10,000 species, reverse sexual dimorphism is the exception not the rule. Also the most well supported hypothesis to why the birds that we normally think of when say "bird of prey" such as Eagles, Hawks, Owls, etc. show reverse sexual dimorphism, is their ecology. The males and females of these species form monogamous pairs, that take turns hunting at different times in the year, taking different prey depending on the season, the smaller male hawks will hunt smaller more agile prey while the female sits on the eggs, and later they switch, with the larger females hunting larger prey. Giant theropods such as T.rex, were not eagles/hawks ecologically speaking, they most likely hunted the same prey year round. In the case of T.rex their ecological role was that of the key stone species apex predator, they were keeping the population of the megafauna (Triceratops, Edmontosaurus, Ankylosaurus) in check, so ecologically they were more like the Lions or Jaguars of their respective ecosystem, not Eagles.
    The actual reasoning for the hypothesis that female T.rex were bigger than the males stemmed from comparisons to crocodilians of all things (not birds of prey). You see in the 1990s the amount of discovered T.rex specimens increased significantly and the paleontologist Peter Larsen of the Black Hills Institute, observed that the specimens seem to come in two body shapes, one being more robust, and it appeared that the robust specimens had a reduced first tail chevron bone, which is what was seen in female crocodilians. In later years this turned out to be wrong for two reasons, first the specimen known as Sue (one of the largest and most robust) turned out to have a full sized chevron after it was properly described, and second of all, later more extensive studies of crocodilians, showed that they don't consistently show reduced chevron bones in females, contrary to previous observations. There is one specimen of T.rex called MOR 1125 which is indeed believed to be a female, because it was preserved with medullary bone tissue, suggesting that it was pregnant (about to lay its eggs) before she died. But aside from that specimen, we currently have no way of determining which T.rex specimens belong to which sex, indeed this is the case for all none avian dinosaurs.

    Seeing as we never see any Ceratosaurus in the docummentary they had either moved away or were extinct by the looks of it.
    I know that Ceratosaurus lived at the same Time and location i just wonder were are they.

    4:00 yep, although it is funny because birds of prey, a.k.a most carnivorous bird do have a trend of where the females are indeed larger than the males, although slightly more in size. Then again, would theropods like T.rex have the same courtship and reproductive methods of birds of prey? To the point where it incentives females being larger? Same for most other theropods to the point it is a trend similar to that of birds of prey? Most likely no, but hey speculation.
    But yeah the reason males become bigger is so that they have an advantage over other males and to woe females, we can see that best in carnivorous animals that work most likely share similar hunting methods to therapods. Even crocs show this as well despite them not having the same hunting method at least the whole ambush from the river thing.
    But yeah, would be a more depends on the situation, was it advantageous for female therapods who had territory and needed to protect that and their young, if and when they at least took croc level care for them when hatched, or would it be more advantageous for the males to just be bigger than the females for male on male competition? Depends I guess.

    *Spino claws casually eviscerating a crocodile*
    LOL. Everyone seems to think claws are like... steel knives or even lightsabres. Claws are glorified fingernails. They're not gonna cut through a massive osteoderm-lined leathery crocodile like it's a stick of warm butter. No, not even if they are maintained sharp. Reminder that cats, animals with retractable claws that they actively sharpen, use their claws for defense and prey restraint. They don't usually kill their prey by clawing it to death because the reality is that a pointy sheath of keratin is just not that good at cutting things. Ok-ish at puncturing but it has a lot of trouble delivering deep cuts like a knife.

    4:05 I think a pretty good argument for female theropods being larger than male theropods is simply modern dinosaurs, birds, for example in most species of birds of prey the female is considerably larger than their male counterparts. So imo it’s definitely within the realm of possibility for female theropods to be larger than their male counterparts. Idk why speculation like that would be considered inaccurate.

      Well the larger female birds are mainly birds of prey but some birds like chickens(which are more closely related to large theropods than birds of prey) the males are larger

    About this argument of sexual dimorphism I know that the classic birds of prey like arpy ,band eagle, hawks have the female bigger than the male but there are a lot of exeptions like the andean condor whic has a male 30 percent bigger than the female and so do californian condor

    Honestly, through some of the dino docs I've watched through the years, I've noticed that the BBC seems more rooted in the science and semi-accuracy of their animals than american docs do.
    Not saying that the BBC gets it all right, they clearly don't, but comparing, even briefly, things like WWD or Prehistoric Planet, to Jurassic Fight Club, you can see the difference in the accuracy used.
    I don't remember the names of half the bad american shows I've seen with dinos, but I saw the one with the cruddy Spino model with the rooster crests ;-;
