super interesting!!! i wonder how much of our intuition comes from being able to see the stars. i remember i went camping once and i had to get up to pee and i couldn't find a flashlight but once i got out of my tent i realized i didn't need it, because i could just orient myself by the stars. it was really trippy and i felt, for a moment, connected to my human ancestors. and then i peed.

That's a really cool thought! I think our ability to recognize patterns helped us to see cycles in the sky, which then helped us get a better understanding of the world around us.

Well said. Now if only we could get people to change and see the wonders we see at night.

Agreed! Astrophotography is a great way to share how amazing the night sky is. Keep up the awesome work dude

Great video. I think we should invent a comically large light switch to turn all the city lights out.

Thank you for your excellent explanation. I live in Cairo and we do have to travel over 200 km to find a Bortle 1 location.

Great video, Ian - always great to have people championing getting out there and absorbing all the universe has to offer in its beauty. Ignore the dissenters in the comments - you’re someone that’s contributing to the world rather than just consuming, and for that you deserve props. 👏👏

Thanks so much! Yes, we need to get more people under the night sky. I truly believe it will help people in a positive way, whether it be physically, spiritually, mentally, or all of the above

Imagine making a video about humanity and how we need to get back to what makes us human, and then LITTER THE VIDEO WITH AI ART 😂😂😂 I think you lost the plot my man!

AI is a great tool to help deliver an idea or concept visually - I'm no graphic artist and it does a great job of helping showcase the ideas I talk about! I think you you may be missing the point :P

@@ianlauerastro So it's OK to use a tool that steals from the creativity of other humans as long as it furthers your own story? Seems a bit selfish to me don't you think? Not very pro-human of you

@@CallMeRabbitzUSVI if you mean bots scraping the internet for images, it's an interesting topic we're on the forefront of that deserves a much bigger discussion than just going back and forth in a comment section. "Stealing the creativity" is an opinion - it's like saying someone who wants to be like Ansel Adams, and starts to create like him, is stealing from him. Is it stealing if I saw a bunch of images on the internet, and download them, and use them to kickstart a digital art piece I'm making? I did not get permission from those artists. You could argue that image generators are doing the same thing, but on a larger scale. Again, it's all up for debate, but at the base level, AI is just a tool.
As for not being "pro-human", I'd 100% disagree with that. I'd say helping teach people how to find dark skies is very much pro-human, and using visual aids to get across an idea doesn't detract from that. But you've got your opinions, I've got mine, and we can agree to disagree :)

@@ianlauerastro I think the time to debate was a year ago when it was still new and everyone was wrapping their head around it. But when you have droves of court cases, plus OpenAi literally saying that they Gen Ai cannot run without taking copyrighted images. And not to mention all the recent articles (NYTimes did a very good piece recently) talking about how even when you type in general statements like animated sponge it gives you spongebob and not just spongebob, it copies the exact nickelodeon promotional material, or when you type I something like movie Screencap it pulls a still from iron man from his first movie.
As for the Pro-human, anti-human angle. I love Astronomy and looking up into the night sky is something innately human that we have done for as long as we've had eyes to gaze and brains to wonder. But the use of Ai detracts from that as it is literally being promoted as a way to replace humans and displace workers in all sectors. All the recent entertainment strikes, layoffs and the like paints that picture very clear. So while you use "Ai" to enhance your Astronomy video, everytime you make a query it further validates the same companies that are willing to let their workers Starve and go homeless (i.e. Movie studio CEOs already said as much)
Do you still think it's just a simple tool?

@@CallMeRabbitzUSVI lol seems like you might just be regurgitating talking points you’ve heard others make about the topic.
Did he steal an artists images or not? Is the artist losing profit because AI used their images to draw from? What’s your actual issue with this?
Edit - to add, I would argue being against the adoption of AI is isn’t very pro-human. We got this wonderful and insightful video, because he was able to fill the gaps with interesting content, which helps further human knowledge and bring it to the masses

Why did you use AI art at 4:36? You could have easily found another piece online like the picture next to it? To talk about people's relation to space and then use technology that steals from people is a huge contradiction

It was an image I had from a while ago and it came to mind when I thought of being in a crowded street. Most of the image is from Adobe’s generative fill in Photoshop.
Would love to know your thoughts on why it’s a contradiction. Using technology is one of the things that makes us human - we just need to disconnect from time to time and reconnect to the stars; not sure how a generative fill button in Adobe takes away from the beauty of the stars

This has been an informative and positive astro video on the Bortle Scale, light pollution, and the incredible experience of seeing the night sky how it deserves to be seen. I think you're missing the point if "AI" images bother you.
