  • Have you ever looked up at the night sky, and wondered how ancient astronomers and stargazers saw a goat in the stars? Or how the zodiac signs look nothing like what they respresent? In this video, we discuss how modern constellation lines came to be, and we come up with some of our own (because we can).

    My astro friend group is in a long-standing dispute with Bortle (yup that one) about whether you're allowed to name asterisms after your friends. We say yes, the guy with the scale named after him says no 😂 Anyhow, yeah the Southern sky really needs an overhaul, don't think two European dudes who went down there once should be able to decide all the constellations.

      I love renaming Messier objects. I’ve seriously pissed off some old school astronomers in my day.

    To really see why the constellations were named, you have to forget the lines and look at the stars themselves. It's easier to see the angle of Orion's shoulders as he pulls back on his bow if you are not distracted by the drawings. For Canis Major, it's more the "posture" of the back and tail and angle of the legs that make it seem dog-like. Works for some of them, at least.

    Is it possible that when the constellations were named, the stars might have been in different places and some stars have become brighter of dimmer.

      @ianlauerastro  6 місяців тому +1

      It's definitely a possibility!

    Ha ha, enjoyed that. I seem to remember Patrick Moore had a rant about constellations once - he’d definitely be a hit on YT! For my money, I can definitely see a swan in Cygnus, a dolphin in Delphinus and an arrow in Sagitta. But for most of the rest, they were smoking something.

    Do you see yonder cloud that’s almost in shape of a camel?
    Polonius: By the mass, and ‘tis like a camel, indeed.
    Hamlet: Methinks it is like a weasel.
    Polonius: It is backed like a weasel.
    Hamlet: Or like a whale?
    Polonius: Very like a whale.

    the corresponding legend for ursa major and minor says their tails are so long precisely because they were put in the sky by a dude grabbing them by their tails and swinging them around.

    The only two that are really obvious is the orions belt (and the shoulders and corners of his tunic) and the big dipper. And I could never see the full "bear" shape even though I can see the dipper clearly; the other stars are just too faint and to far away from each other so without drawing lines you don't really see any shapes.

  • @NightmareRex6

    yea they dont make sense, only reason i thinlk they exist besides the dippers and the belt is esoterics, altho i see a trianble or V dipper in the sky wonder why we dont counnt that as a 3rd dipper?

      And the Babylonians probably got theirs from earlier cultures via oral traditions. One of the oldest known myth story is the Hunt which could go back as far as 25,000 years ago, which is usually depicted using the Big Dipper. Ancient astronomy and cultures are so fascinating!
