    Lovely video thaks. I've just bought one. I didn't realise you have to lock the clutch rather by turning clockwise. I was expecting some sort of free movement. My one also had a couple of loose bolts in one of the plates which caused it to wobble a bit so its worth people just making sure everything is tight before first use. Also worth noting that the counterweight isnt big enough to balance a 11lb load. I have a cannon 6Dii with a double battery grip and a 100-400mm lens and there is no way I could get the thing to balance. It just means buying another counterweight but its worth considering this before purchasing if you are planning on going somewhere and using it straight away. Also I have a camera tripod but with this weight on it I decided to buy the tripod. I was gobsmaked at how stable this is for the money, absolute bargain.

    Good review. I just started looking at motorized eq mounts again. (I have an old Meade telescope I bought used, but it's missing a few components of the drive, and picked up a motorized eq tripod and mount at a thrift shop, but the motor is dead). Figure it's time to just buy new, but am trying to keep it in the 3 digit price range.
    This one caught my eye, so now I'm researching it.

    To be honest I never got to use my astro gear away from home ... That is with any success 😂... Simply too much gear and troublesome...
    I wish those trackers had included a good sturdy mount and ballhead in the package and since the new version is out I had hoped they would bring the price of the 2i down so that it could be more affordable :)
    I have seen a bunch of people use them with great success and I wish you all the best with it!

      Both versions will stay side by side, the GTI is not a replacement for the the 2i, completely different purposes.
      So if Skywatcher keeps producing both types of trackers, as they said they will, than there won't be a price drop I suppose

    Very good explained Wido, I have also one here, have it for about a few months now but still not used it, new in the box.
    Few weeks ago I saw the release of the new Skytracker GTI, different tracker and different purpose but looks a nice little go-to mount.
    I contacted Skywatcher and they are planning to keep producing both trackers side by side, they said they are built for completely different purposes.
    I guess I will use mine mostly on holiday, but have to try it out first, so looking forward to your upcoming videos

    Having a Sky-Watcher EQ5 with tracking and a Celestron CGEM mount, I am in the market now for something smaller that I can take with me to Australia or New Zealand to photograph the Southern night's sky, as I'm contemplating (not sure yet though). Besides from that endeavour, a small equatorial tracking mount would be perfect for shorter trips closer to home as well.
    I cannot take the EQ5 with tripod with me to long trips (the CGEM is out of the question anyway, considering its weight), but this Star Adventurer seems just fine. Can I use a photography tripod for this, or do I need an astronomy-style mount?

    Hi Wido, thanks so much for this video! Do you know if it is necessary to get a ball head in order to adjust the vertical tilt of the DSLR once it’s connected to the mount, and would using a ball head mess with the balance in any way?
    I recently bought the 2i pro pack and attached my DSLR to the fine-tuning plate but noticed that 1.) it would take an awkward combination of rotating the entire camera along the R.A. axis and swiveling it left/right on the plate to get the framing I would want for almost any given shot and 2.) swiveling the camera from side to side would throw off the balance in the declination axis. Would getting a ball head negate these problems?

    • @AstroForumSpace
      @AstroForumSpace  Рік тому

      I immediately ordered a ballhead with the 2i Pro, exactly for the reasons you've mentioned. You need to be careful not to move the tripod after alignment, but a ballhead is a great solution to point your camera to the area you're interested in. It works for me. Happy holidays!

    • @RatherDoThanHave

  • @paulskvorc7021

    I'm new to the Star Adventurer 2i. I live in Alaska and I want to take 24 hour time-lapse of the sun, TRACKING IT through 24 hours and keeping it centered in the frame. I can find nothing in the instruction manual about tracking the sun. Does the "Sun" setting on the unit automatically track the sun? I ASSUME (because it doesn't say anything about that in the instruction manual), that if the Sun setting actually does automatically track the sun, that I need to polar align first. The manual doesn't say if I have to polar align first either. If I do need to polar align before tracking the sun, (how could I NOT?), how am I supposed to polar align with 24 hours of daylight? Any help you can provide would be well appreciated.

    • @AstroForumSpace
      @AstroForumSpace  2 роки тому

      Hi Paul, wow, you have 24h of daylight, that's super interesting. What I would do is (a) polar align your tracker. You can't see the north star, so what I would do is first put your tripod into the north position - use a compass or look at Google maps to find out where your North is and put the 2i pro in the direction, so the polarscope faces north.. Second, put your 2i pro in the correct latitude position, you can Google the latitude position of your town. I'm at 52 in the Netherlands so yours will be higher, closer to 90 (which is the north pole). After that, turn the dial to"🌞" and it'll start tracking the sun when the light turns red. After that, you can use the ring and knobs to point your camera or telescope to the sun. A word of caution: NEVER look directly at the sun!!!! You'll go blind. You'll need special solar filters or a solar scope to watch the sun. Good luck!

    • @paulskvorc7021
      @paulskvorc7021 2 роки тому +1

      @@AstroForumSpace Thanks! I've read the several methods of polar alignment when you can't see the proper star. I just needed to hear that PA was necessary. (Seemed obvious, but when one is new to something, one never KNOWS even the obvious.) The big deal, for me, was verification that the "Sun" setting actually tracked the Sun! That's sadly lacking in the instruction manual! Thanks again!

    • @AstroForumSpace
      @AstroForumSpace  2 роки тому

      Good luck Paul, let me know if it worked out! Yes, first polar align and then simply turn that dial to solar and it starts tracking. That's what I love about the 2i pro, just turn and track.

    • @paulskvorc7021
      @paulskvorc7021 2 роки тому +2

      @@AstroForumSpace Thought I'd follow up, since 1) you actually HELPED, ;) and 2) you asked. Today, I was able to get three hours of tracked sun, with the sun staying in the center of the frame. No chance of using Polaris, BUT, I used the Polar Aligner Pro app (on Android), in "Day" mode, and it worked well. As you said, I just put the Star Adventurer 2i in "solar tracking" position and it did the rest. The 3h video, (still sequence), is uninteresting, but the sun stayed in the center of the frame, thereby demonstrating that the Star Adventurer 2i was functioning as designed. Tomorrow, my first attempt at a 24h sequence. Thanks for the help.
