Shovel Knight RPG. Yacht Club would make *all* the money.
It pretty much is one already, just not in the traditional sense. It has a nice story and likable characters, that's all you really need in a Role-playing game. It's like Legend of Zelda but with platforming.
I think adding way more items, characters, choices, story, and dialogue to make the game feel deeper with a richer storyline would make a great sequel. Remove the platforming gameplay and it just wouldn't be Shovel Knight anymore, though. That has to stay.

In no way is the story in depth enough to call it an RPG, nor does it really have any of the traditional RPG elements at all. That's like calling the new Call of Duty an RPG because it has a decent story. there's no correlation, man.
Nedoxu . Is there any difference between Shovel Knight and LoZ other than the viewing angle? LoZ is an RPG, right? They both have items, progression, memorable characters with personality, dialogue, towns, optional side quests, and so on. CoD doesn't really have any of that other than a story and characters, and CoD characters are HARDLY memorable. I've played most of them and I don't recall a SINGLE character's name other than the dude named "Mason".
thegreatestpepe well... Legend of Zelda is not an rpg either. It's a puzzle action adventure. the items you get are predetermined or bought, and are generally not the kinda items you'd get in an RPG. RPG items are like "a better sword" or etc... and no I wouldn't count the master sword. Don't get me wrong, I love both Zelda and Shovel Knight. I just wouldn't ever qualify them as RPGs. without referring to JRPGs, you have games like Dead Island. That's an RPG, because of all the items and the leveling up and the skill system

You don't need the depth of story to call anything an RPG. Vast majority of JRPGs are a proof of that, with story much more function than form.
However, the thing that makes a notable difference between RPGs and cames that use RPG elements is the amount of dialogue as compared to other game genres. You cannot make an RPG that's light on dialogue, however RPGs that are, are usually called ActionRPGs. Secret of Mana is a very good example of this.
The gameplay could be anything from platformer (Legend of Zelda 2), to first person shooter (Fallout 3 & New Vegas), and it wouldn't disqualify it from being an RPG.

Shovel Knight was one of the few indie games that actually payed homage to the classics rather than using them as an excuse for cheaply made assets. The Music, The look, The feel, everything is VERY reminiscent of the (G)olden days.

There are many indie games with those old-school graphics that are simply lazy, they use 8-bit graphics as a excuse to not work hard on the presentation and make cheap assets, and the rest of the game, like the gameplay and level design, is not good either, and also, these retro games don't actually look retro, it's a mix of stuff uglier than the actual 80s and 90s games, and stuff that older consoles don't have the power to run, the game doesn't feel nostalgic at all, overall, these games don't have the same care and effort that classic games had, these games are not a homage to the classics, they are a disgrace to the classics.
But Shovel Knight, is not one of these, this is a NES-style game that is worthy of the NES classics, if they released that game in 1989, Shovel Knight would stand as one of the greatest videogames of that era.

I came to a *ridiculous* realization about Shovel Knight when I was thinking about how the game canon fit together (as I tend to do with games).
Not only was Shovel Knight the best without half of the team he'd based his entire fighting style around, he was the best when he hadn't even practiced during the entire rise of civilization. In the opening of the game it mentions that the lands were untamed when last he went adventuring, which means *all of civilization* emerged between when he quit adventuring and the games opening.
Imagine trying to enter a partners competition without the person you'd spent all of your time working with. Now imagine trying to do it from memory when you hadn't done the routine in 80 years at least. Now imagine that it's life or death fighting, under conditions that you don't know about coming in.
Under those conditions, Shovel Knight was *still* the best. I think he might be one of the most badass heroes to ever come out of gaming. Like, seriously.
Also because...you know...he's fighting with a shovel.

+FensterH The Kickstarter was successful enough to add (at least) three additional campaigns where you play as boss characters. We've already seen the first: Plague of Shadows, where you play as Plague Knight (duh lol). The second will be Specter Knight, and the third remains undecided (I believe it's down to Treasure Knight or King Knight).
After that, there are rumors we could see a playable Shield Knight; perhaps in the co-op mode the Wii U Amiibo provides access to.

Best platformer I have ever played. I buy most indie platformers I find on Steam and this in my honest opinion easily beats every other. I'd spent 40$ for it if I had to. It's only 15$ get it as soon as you can or comes in sale.

2018 is a good year for Shovel Knight, playable in Indie Pogo and Rivals of Aether, and Assist Trophie in Smash Ultimate.
When nostalgia kicks in and you make a knight who fought the god of war, conquered the turbo tunnel, saved the world from an evil fem wizard and you loose to a millionaire duck with a pogo-stick
They really made the best 8-bit soundtrack ever for the first level.
There can only be one first time to hear this song, fortunately the hundred other times are almost as good.
It was such a great decision to make this the first song you play the game to, INSTANT hook, can still remember the first time I booted this game up, knew immediately I was finishing the whole game.

I feel like there's a certain art to first level themes. They have to not only get you pumped for the beginning of the game, but also set the tone for the rest of it. Megaman X's highway theme is a beautiful example of this. And now so is Strike The Earth =3 I'd like to submit Voyager from Hotline Miami 2, bu I understand if some don't feel that one fully counts.
I have not heard modern retro music this good since Slayin on the App Store. Up until this, I thought that was the only game that payed tribute to the old days in the right way; especially with its music. Well, it is not the best, but I thought it had pretty good music. Still wish it would get a damn Play Store release already.

But, this is pretty damn awesome; might finally purchase this game after having watching it for the longest time now. I was hesitant because normally, well these games do have novelty, like any old-school game they tend to grow boring after a while. But, this game looks like something fresh and unforgettable. Perhaps, it will not be too late for this game to sate.

Scott Pilgrim vs The World: The Game?
Bl Scott Well, that was not exactly aiming at being as retro as this was. This game used the NES color palette which limited textures significantly, well Scott Pilgrim is just an extremely colorful 2D adventure that had no limits to what it could do in that department and looks extremely colorful and enticing. But, the experience is a bit overwhelming to be considered a retro adventure like this.
