- A superb walk in the Northern Lake District up to Lonscale Pike (703m) and the Wainwright Summit of Lonscale Fell (715m)
The walk starts from the Gale Road/Underskiddaw Car Park which is situated between Latrigg & Skiddaw. We head through the gate at the back of the car park and the first part of the walk is on the Cumbria Way. The Cumbria Way path heads around the side of Lonscale Fell and has spectacular views into the valley below and across to Blencathra. We follow the Cumbria Way for approx. 3 miles until we come to a gate with Skiddaw House visible from the gate. We turn left at this point and leave the Cumbria Way. We follow the path which climbs up beside the fence and old wall. This path leads on to Burnt Horse Ridge which is a stunning part of the walk with more spectacular views. Once over Burnt Horse Ridge we cross a stile and follow a very steep path up the fell side. We then take a path which goes off to the left towards Lonscale Pike. The summit of Lonscale Pike ( 703m) has superb views. After enjoying the views from Lonscale Pike we follow the clear path, which crosses over a fence, to the Wainwright Summit of Lonscale Fell (715) We then retrace our steps from the summit back to the fence and turn right to start the descent. The path down is easy to follow but is quite steep in places. We follow this path down to the Cumbria Way where we turn right and follow the track back to the car park. A walk we really enjoyed.
Distance is around 7 miles.
That route is now on my list thanks Eddie 👍

Great views all around, but the drone footage at around 18:30 is breath-taking. Thanks for sharing your walk and putting together another video. Looking forward to seeing your final Wainwright 👍👍👍
Hi Peter, thanks. This was a brilliant walk with superb views all the way. It is another one of our favourite walks and one we have planned to do again in the coming year. Another beautiful Lake District odyssey- watching your understated footage gives us a real lift, especially in the dark days of December when all we have to look forward to is the alarm going off at some ungodly hour! Roll on retirement.
Once again, thanks for the superbly guided walk.
Liz and Nick

Hi, What a great route upto Lonscale Fell. Stunning views and also excellent drone footage to. Great views over the Northern Fells which look quite desolate but ones i like very much. Look forward to watching you both do your final Wainwright - Clough Head!
Hi Geoff, it is a really good route and is up there as one of our favourites. We have already decided we want to do it again in 2025. The views throughout the walk are superb. We had a great day. Thanks again for watching and for the positive comments, it is always appreciated. Take care & Best Wishes from us both.
Although I have done Lonscale I love this alternative route.
Hi, apologies for the delay in replying to you as we have been away on holiday for a couple of weeks. This was a great route and it is definitely a route we will be doing again sometime. We both had a fantastic day. Thanks again for watching & commenting, it is always appreciated. Take care & Best Wishes from us both.
Hi Eddie, Carol, absolutely wonderful. Brought back some lovely memories of the Cumbria way did that. A great route up Lonsdale Fell, much better the the route up the front. It has to be said the Birkett summit of Lonscale Pike is by far better than Alfred’s summit. 🤣
Nearly there now, just the one to go.
All the best guys 😀🥾⛰
Hi Dave, thanks, the section of the Cumbria Way in this route around Lonscale Fell is really good with great views down the valley. I agree with you, Lonscale Pike is a far better summit than the Wainwright Summit on Lonscale Fell. The views from the Pike are superb. Thanks again for watching & taking the time to comment, it is always appreciated. Take care & Best Wishes from us both.
Great video Eddie, really enjoyed the route and the drone footage, we’ll be adding the route to our list to tackle next year.
Hi Paul, thanks. Good to hear from you. It is a really good route and one we will be doing again sometime. The views were superb all the way and the paths were good throughout the route. We both had a great day. Thanks for watching & taking the time to comment, it is appreciated. Take care & Best Wishes from us both. ( Pass on our Best Wishes to Mary & Derek)
What an incredible looking route. Most videos I've seen of Lonescale come at it off Skiddaw and mostbthink it's a boring mound. Going the way you did maximized the scenery and Lonescale Pike just looks stunning. I never gave this one a thought before, but this is getting added to the list to pick from in May.
Hi Michael, thanks. It is a really good route and we have already decided to do it again in 2025. It is up there as one of our favourites. The walk along the section of the Cumbria Way was superb and then the views as we got higher up were great. We had a fantastic day. Thanks again for watching and taking the time to comment, it is always appreciated. Take care & Best Wishes from us both.
When I see Eddie and Carol with their shades on at the start of a video then I know its gonna be a good one!!! Cheers
Hi David, thanks. This was a superb walk and is up there as another one of our favourites! The path traversing Lonscale Fell was really good with great views down the valley and then we had the great views as we got higher up, all in all, a great walk! Thanks again for watching and taking the time to leave a comment, it is always appreciated. Take care & Best Wishes from us both.
Brilliant video and hike again Eddie and Carol! One more to go?, it's been quite a memorable journey following you both!👍👍
Hi Anthony, thanks. This was a great walk and definitely one we will be doing again sometime. We both had a really good day. We were staying at The Royal Oak in Keswick and called in to the store to see you, the day before this walk, after we completed Ling & Sale Fell, but we couldn't see you. Thanks for following our journey and taking the time to leave comments, it is really appreciated. We still intend to continue our adventures and will be going back to do some of our favourites. Take care & Best Wishes from us both.
Hi Eddie, I appreciate you both taking the time to pop in and see me, so sorry I wasn't there. I have in fact retired now, it was around Easter time when I decided to call it a day. I'm still having knee problems (it's an age thing! Lol!) but I haven't given up hope just yet of getting back in the Fells! Atb Anthony
@anthonypayne1 Hi Anthony, that explains how we didn't see you. Good to hear you have retired, fingers crossed your knee problems can be sorted and you get back on the fells. We both miss your videos! Take care.
I love that track traversing the slopes of Lonscale Pike. Only 1 to go Eddie, you & Carol might hame to sneak a small bottle of bubbly in the rucksacks for Clough Head. Lovely video.
Hi Michael, yes I agree with you, it is a great path heading around Lonscale Pike. We both really enjoyed this walk and is up there as one of our favourites. We have already decided to do this walk again in 2025, we both loved it that much! It had great views all the way and the views heading over Burnt Horse Ridge are superb. We may have sneaked a bottle of bubbly in our bag for Clough Head?? Thanks again for watching & taking the time to leave a comment, it is always appreciated. Take care & Best Wishes from us both.
Hi Eddie. Super video, those views from the drone are stunning. We did more or less the same walk which I first saw on Andys (Rockstar) channel. What a brilliant route up to Lonscale Fell. We just carried on after the Wainwright Summit and turned left down the narrow track to meet up with the zig zags path. ATB
Hi Tony, it is a really good route up to Lonscale Fell, I will have to have a look at Andy's video. The views were superb all the way. We both had a brilliant day. It is definitely a walk we will be doing again. We did consider coming back down using the zig zag path coming down from Skiddaw but decided to head straight down beside the fence. Thanks again for watching & for taking the time to comment, it is always appreciated. Take care & Best Wishes from us both.
WOW Eddie! What a fabulous video. I hadn't thought about walking up Lonscale Fell but having watched this it looks absolutely fantastic. Beautiful views all the way up. Love that traverse path overlooking the valley. Amazing 360 drone footage from Lonscale Pike. I was going to go up Latrigg so I'm wondering if on these short December days I could combine this walk with Latrigg too. Thanks for sharing Eddie. Say hello to Carol and I look forward to watching your final Wainwright over on Clough Head. ATB David
Hi David, thanks. This is now another one of our favourite walks and we have it planned to do again in 2025. The Cumbria Way path heading along the side of Lonscale Fell is really good and the views were superb all the way. The final climb up towards Lonscale Pike is fairly steep, but it is only a short section of the walk. We both had a great day. It would be a great walk to do at any time of the year. Carol says Hello! Thanks again for watching & for such positive feedback, it is always appreciated. Take care & Best Wishes from us both.
Nice route Eddie. Put it on my to do list. Clough Head via Fisher Wife's Rake 🤔😉🤣
Hi Stephen, it is a cracking route and one we will definitely be doing again sometime. The views all the way were superb. We both had a brilliant day. Thanks again for watching & taking the time to comment, it is always appreciated. Take care & Best Wishes from us both.
Hi Eddie and Carol, another great vlog! I walked exactly the same route on the Saturday before your walk, starting in Keswick. The weather was poor that day and I got drowned going up Burnt Horse ridge. There was also a fell race along the Cumbria way part of the route. With the path being so narrow it was a little awkward. Congratulations on nearly completing the Wainwrights, assuming you haven’t been up Clough Head yet. I was up there in June on a sunny day. The views of Thelkeld and Blencathra were amazing. I really enjoyed the addition of drone footage in your vlog. Is this new, as I can’t remember it in previous vlogs? All The Best, Paul
Hi Paul, thanks. It is a really good route up to Lonscale Fell, it is definitely a walk we have planned to do again in the coming year. I could imagine it being tricky for you when you did the same route, heading along the Cumbria Way section with that Fell Race on the same day. The drone is relatively new, I think I first used the drone on the Dollywagon Pike to Helvellyn walk in April of this year. I couldn't use the drone on the three previous videos to this one, due to the windy conditions. The drone certainly gives a different perspective and it is definitely something I want to continue with going forward, weather permitting! Thanks again for watching & for the positive comments, it is always appreciated. Take care & Best Wishes from us both.
