Great Video! We have a sunken greenhouse attached to our house that is heated by the exhaust from the HRV (heat recovery ventilator) from the house. It also has a fan that pumps hot air from the ceiling down into pipes that run a couple of feet below the surface of the beds. This way the beds act as a thermal mass.
Other than the ricket mass heater, i like the sound of that compost heat. Here Tx. Not many days freeze cold. I do have a tent heater i thought of using. But ive never taken it out of box. I guess im waiting until hell freezes over. Ive used other sources in poly tunnel. This year renovating tunnel. And garden ideas. Take care.
I'm with you. I use wood heat with an outside boiler now but next time I cut wood I'm bringing a wood chipper for the branches so I can make a big compost pile to see how well it works!!!!
thanks for the very interesting video again. Your channel is very valuable. I heat my greenhouse with a compost pile which is inside the greenhouse. I managed to have at least 5 degree celsius in the coldest nights when it was -5 degree celsius outdoors. I live in switzerland. (i hope that i can harvest some citrus fruits this year:-))

In the meantime, I find myself being inspired by your videos, and chomping at the bit. I grow super hot peppers close to Ottawa, and am looking forward to a 4 season harvest. Thank you for your reply! I'm in Manitoba but I have a few friends in your area. I heard they shut down the bridges to Gatineau. Stay safe inside, the numbers there are insane. I think the hot pepper business is genius, there's an ENORMOUS market for them where you live!

I now stay as far away from the ciyy as possible. Haha. Aside from the odd trip to Home depot. Abiding to the strict social distancing regulations of course, haha! I use a combination of climate battery ,wood stove and composted walkways to heat my greenhouse in our climate that gets down to -40 C but we only grow winter greens like kale,spinach and peas in the coldest 2 months.
A thermal-mass heater ( when constructed properly ) works well because it continues to give off heat after the fire has died down. Water can be a easy mass storage heat sink. Sand also works well. There is at least one gravity fed pellet stove on the market that doesn’t require any electricity. If you have a septic tank and can build your greenhouse over it, you will gain warmth from the hot water and decomposing matter in the septic tank. I don’t think most wood stoves are made of cast-iron. Many but not most.
We have an alternative to a greenhouse, a very well-insulated window room. We heat it with electricity because in our case it cost us less than wood. Plus no weakening up in the middle of the night, we gave up on that very quickly.
i was wondering about getting a cheap camping wood stove ($100 on amazon) then building it into a box filled with something like sand or perlite/clay mix to hold the heat in. would that work?

Thank you for the kind words! What I would choose depends on the size of the greenhouse. Smaller, I'd use a rocket mass heater. Larger, a wood boiler.
