To see this preformed live many years ago in Sacramento - the 2 men walking on the stage while some balcony drunks shouted for this or that - the 2 men stood still in silence on the stage . . . waiting. Finally, when things became quiet - Paul commenced playing his acoustic guitar - a mike directed at his instrument while a 2nd mike was focused at Artie's mouth. The place became totally still but for the sounds emanating from Paul & Art. Complete connection / melding of the audience & the sound makers. Harmony / congruity of voices & guitar. Beautiful ! ! ! When it concluded with the finale crescendo, all sound abruptly stopped , dead quite, the silence was such that the audience became stunned / immobile. Finally some people were forced to breath & they all - as one entity - erupted into applause and shouts of appreciation !. There have been few times in my life that I have been so empirically moved. And fortunate. Ray
Very nice. I like your Bio at the beginning. It reminds me of the times my youngest daughter (my wild child) and I would play LP's and sit on the floor and sing along.
More than anything, Charlotte, I hear the feeling, the passion in your voice. LOL, no, you're not Artie!! BUT, there are some on here, singing the same song, who do not FEEL the music. I felt like you did and it came through when you sang, Thank you!!
What is important is you were properly exposed to the beauty of this song you’ve just done. I found your chords to be simple and sweet. Truly sometimes less is more!
There is no need to compare ever. Your voice is your signature, nobody can take that from you it is yours and beautiful, thank you for sharing it with us. La musique. wow mercy.
I'm an experienced guitarist but, though I have always felt it is one the most beautiful songs ever written, hesitated to teach myself to play it for the reason above stated ☺️. I finally gave in to the bitter-sweet temptation shortly before watching your post (After playing it I wanted to see how others had interpreted it).
Gracias por compartir tu dulzura!! Hermosa versión!! Un abrazo desde Argentina. Thank you for sharing your sweetness!! Beautiful version!! A hug from Argentina.
Qué amable! Muchas gracias, José! I do a version of Don't Cry For Me Argentina. :) I hope you are safe and well. Thank you for your lovely comment. 🙂☀️🌈
I think this version is better than the original. Seriously, I just listened to both while learning this...I'll take your version. More heart. Well done.
I played this song in 1975, at 20 years of age, to a French-speaking audience of 7 or 8 people. What did they know about pressed in organdy, clothed in crinoline of smoky burgundy? Absolutely nothing, as, I must admit neither did I 😅. It didn't matter. Capo high up the neck, voice high up the scale, I loved to sing that song, and loved the silent, entranced attention of my audience. It never fails to amaze me when a young singer like this lady picks up an eternal 50-year-old song, and brings it to the attention of listeners from all over the world. Bravissima 🎉🎉
What a beautiful comment. Thank you so much for taking the time to listen and write. Did you live in France? I grew up on this music, fortunately, thanks to my father. :) I find Simon and Garfunkel's harmonies and Simon's guitar and lyrics to be extremely moving and uplifting. :)
@MooreLanguageSolutions Merci pour votre réponse. Oui, j'ai vécu en France pendant une année scolaire, entre sept 1974 et juin de 1975. During that time, I also subjected my audience to Kathy's Song .. is there any more beautiful line than, "There but for the grace of you go I"? The Boxer .. "I'm laying out my winter clothes ..". And so on. America, Punky's Dilemma, Old Friends .. I did them all. In the past year, though, I have mastered Overs, from Bookends. I hated it back in the early 70s, but now I can't get enough of it. Trouble is, I only have one friend who knows it, so I spend a lot of time singing it to myself, admiring Paul Simon's absolute mastery of blues, jazz and poetry, all in 2 and a bit short minutes of heaven. Check out Chloe Moser's rendition on UA-cam, and if you don't know it already, it will open your eyes and ears to the rolling complexity of his guitar playing. End of fawning eulogy 😀.
I've just noticed your profile. When I lived in France, I used to take my guitar along to classes. I remember doing a "Compare and contrast" between "Old Friends"and "When I'm Sixty-Four". Reaction to OF, unfortunately, was unfavourable .. "C'est de la soupe". You only learn the idiom with exposure to the people, right? At the time, the hits on the go were, "Femme", by Nicole Croisille .."Je fréquentais alors des hommes un peu bizarres, aussi légers que la cendre de leurs cigares". "Le Sud", by Nino Ferrer and, believe it or not, "Forever and ever", by Demis Roussos. Nice times.
@markdickens6426 Mais c'est super ça! Quel plaisir de lire votre histoire en plus. :) I will check of Chloe Moser. Thank you so much for sharing your lovely memories with me. I agree; Simon's music is heavenly indeed.
Let There Be Light Hello you! How do? I have the tail end of a cold so a little lacklustre but better than when it started! I hope you are well and still looking up. :)
Hi Charlotte, sorry to hear about your cold, I do hope you recover soon. Yes I'm fine, been busy with work so hardly any time to do what I use to with filming etc. I'm looking forward to your next song :) have a very beautiful day Charlotte. xx
It's great to hear you are well and keeping busy. Yes, I understand about finding the time to film and upload. I have so many songs to record - I'll try to get some more up in the next few weeks. Take care and we'll be in touch. :)
