Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey the best Whiskey on Earth! and yes I am completely biased.
Coming from an Irish family it hurts my heart when I hear "The" Irish style is single pot still. They were doing all malted barley before anyone...the Brits are the reason we got the single pot still. I love it all I just want the whole history understood. I love whisky from everywhere for sure. I really do appreciate your reviews. I don't learn new things from anyone but Ralfy and you.
I think you misunderstood. The Single Pot Still is UNIQUELY Irish thus it is what Ireland is known for, not that they weren't the first to do Single Malt. In fact, they were the first to produce whiskey, period. A region can gain a reputation for something even if it isn't the ONLY thing they produce. For example, the Napa Valley grows 36 different grape varieties but they are KNOWN for Cabernet Sauvignon. So, in California it is said that when it comes to Cabernet, "Cabernet is King."
I'm enjoying your coverage of the Teeling line and I agree with your assessment and comparison. The thing you didn't mention is that I think the Teeling is more expensive in most places and not worth a premium above RB12.
Great video. Redbreast 12 is excellent. What I like to do is mix 1 part Redbreast cask strength with 2 parts standard 12. It ups the 40% ABV to closer to 46-48%. I let it rest for a month or so to marry

For me, Redbreast 12 just loses too much from being 40% and chill-filtered; weak mouth feel.Yellow Spot 12 takse the pot still crown.
Erik great comparison. I do agree with you the redbreast 12yr is better for now. I cannot wait till Teeling has an in house distilled 12yr for comparison. Cheers.
Hey Erik, As much as we don't like drawing comparisons to Redbreast, this was a great video! (The more difference in the Pot Still category the better!) Side note: another reason for the brightness in the Teeling Single Pot Still you were experiencing is the yeast blend we used, a combination of Distillers Yeast and South African white wine yeast introducing some lovely pineapple and passionfruit esters.
Will we get age statements? I don't care if the whisky is young (older isn't neccesarily better), but I want to know what I'm buying. Love the Small Batch though, bought it last week, my first Teeling.
Great review. I feel like Redbreast 12 is one of those whiskey miracles similar to Ardbeg 10; the quality is outstanding without costing a fortune. Having said that Teeling is doing great things with their higher abv, non-chill filtered core range. I hope more Irish whiskey follows suit.

Love the video and your attention to this distillery. As to the price difference, Teeling is more expensive than RB12 by around $10 (in my area). However, for me personally, the Teeling is worth the extra money. I am new to premium whiskey, but I find that the flavor in Teeling is more intriguing. Could be my inexperience talking, but RB12 tastes almost one note to me. It is delicious, but I find that Teeling has more flavor to experience in each sip. Additionally, from everything that I can see on the internet, Teeling does not have E150a added to their whiskey. RB12 does, as their website states. This is not a big deal to most, but I prefer the additive not be in my expensive whiskey (even if it means the color is inconsistent). Just my 2 cents.
Good thing! I can't find redbreast in my country, but I can get my hands on Teeling Single Pot Still for a reasonable price!

Yes the Teeling line is a good all around Irish whiskey.
I agree Erik the RB12 cask strength is the best bang for your buck (IMO) in the Irish pot still line up. Keep the good content coming!
I don't know much about whiskey but you got me hankering for an apple pie now.
Very nice this whiskey, only let it breathe in the cup with a lid for like 15 minutes before drinking. I nosed a dram fresh out of a freshly opened bottle and was at first horrified; but returning a week later and letting it sit a bit before and it showed up deliciously ;)
Thanks for this series on Irish whiskey! You do know that only the Pot Still is made at Teeling. The other 3 core range expressions are sourced whiskey from Cooley.

Redbreast 12 is available and affordable. It would be so much better at 46%, though.

Tried the teeling a few yrs ago. My fav Irish is rb12. Haven't had a chance to try the cask strength yet. Will prob be the next bottle. I only have one bottle in the home at a time
Man, I can't get the Teeling Single Pot Still in northern Colorado. Would love to try it and see the differences myself between it and RB12. Here's to happy hunting!
I would like to see what happens when the Teeling spends a few more years ageing. For me it was not great but not terrible. More disappointing than anything. I paid $70US for my bottle and currently at that price point, I'd much rather have the Powers John's Lane.

Well I beat you on price this time. Teeling Pot Still sells for $62 in Boston but can be hard to find and I have never seen a bottle in RI. The Teeling Pot still is 4 yo and at that age is too young coming across a little hotter than any other pot still. The youngest Redbreast is 12 yo, Spot whisky 7 yo and the youngest pot still version of Powers is 12 yo. IMO the Teeling product could benefit greatly from a few more years in the barrel and I would dearly love to taste a dram in 2024. There is no comparison with the Redbreast 12 which is in a class all of its own amongst world whiskies. It is a sweet and syrupy concoction that totally hoodwinks the mouth with impressions of lusciousness even though it is really a thin whiskey. Try this act of liquid seduction for the first time and you will be saying " This is whisky ? Wow. How about another ? " It tastes like an alcoholic ice cream topping rather than a whiskey and the reputation as Ireland's best whiskey is thoroughly deserved. As a buying proposition the Redbreast costs me $63 which makes the comparison with the $62 Teeling a no brainer.
I can recommend Redbreast 12 to anyone who likes the sweeter sherried Scotch whiskies.

I’m just finishing up my bottle (05/2021 batch) and I’m not impressed. It’s certainly young, lacks depth and has a weird note I’ve had trouble defining. Yellow Spot, Johns Lane…waaay better. I’d rather have Green Spot at similar price point. I’ll try a higher end Teeling though. I think I’m becoming a damn snob.
Erik would you say the Redbreast 12 has a more oily richer texture - probably my favourite Irish Whiskey of those I've tasted in my collection
Definitely! Funny thing is, I like the Redbreast 12 even more NOW after comparing it to another whiskey.

How does it match up to the Glendalough 13 (Mizunara finish) I wonder? Good to know there is another good, affordable Irish out there. Need to get my hands on this one soon.
