they are saying why doesn't college play like the nba where its all spread the court but wanna froget that there are barely enough big men in the nba that can fill those roles so how is college gonna do the same. College is an older style of basketball because of the lack of number of great shooting bigmen. Its the same reason these college football teams run these crazy offenses that would never work in the nfl because there is a lack of guys talented enough to play the nlf style qb there isnt even enough for the NFL
In college basketball you actually see tons of different styles. You’re not getting 50 threes vs 50 threes each night. Some teams play zone while other teams press full court all game. Some teams slow down the pace and play with a traditional big. I love watching the different styles compete.

Us NBA fans say this every march madness. College players don't know what they're doing compared to NBA players. And the difference jumps out of the screen.
Yet a bunch of college hoops fans come out and say that college basketball is better than NBA and that college basketball is pure basketball.
@@rangergaming8316 I will say college basketball is better than nba in terms of officiating (usually). There's a lot more contact being made on drives and no foul is called which is nice to see. NBA really does feel like what mood is the ref in tonight.

The post game is ineffective because the rules make bigs plays though contact in the post and jumpshooters can't be touched. Obviously no hand checking (freedom of movement) has changed a lot. But hand checking was only allowed because everyone allowed carrying the basketball. Get rid of handchecking get rid of the carry. Nba basketball also doesn't call traveling.
uconn is very fun to watch, one of the few teams. coach hurley has some sets that are very creative and fun to watch
As a casual fan I appreciate the explanations of plays.
A key reason is that the disparity in talent makes it an uneven playing field. What I mean is that IF the teams in college were more even in talent, then coaching would rise to the surface. But because talent in many cases is so uneven great coaching doesn't necessarily result in success and bad coaching can still be rewarded when they have lottery picks covering up these glaring strategic mistakes that JJ and LBJ are pointing out.
this is kinda right, kinda wrong. if you have a talent mismatch in your favor, it makes sense to play conservatively so that you don't risk mistakes that nullify your talent advantage. if there's a talent mismatch that's not in your favor, it makes sense to add any type of randomness to the equation. this is why college fb is so much more innovative than the nfl.
All it takes is 2 dummies on the floor and you can't run sophisticated plays. That said, the 'college' aspect of college basketball is failing.
Actually I think you are wrong. The more talented taems like Kentucky have many underclassman. When teams like the mid majors are together for 4 years then they can compete against more taleneted teams because they have worked r together for years.
Virginia is always that ine well coached team with lackluster talent. They rarely ever get 5 stars and struggle to get 4 stars. But somehow compete with UNC and Duke every year
The ncaa tournament kinda proved you wrong this year tbh. Kentucky is the more talented team but they lost to a better coach team. If we're being honest coaching is more important in college with all the different styles in offense and defense and as coach your setting the tone for your program. If you don't have a great coach in college it shows. In the NBA coaches are replaceable just look at the bucks this year. NBA coaches have to manage personalities since everyone in the NBA usually has similar offense and defense. Also consider the fact that NBA has put so much emphasis on star players, that it's made coaches hand cuffed with how they handle them. Unless you're a respected coach like pop.

I think there might be some cherry picking going because I've seen plenty of college teams run interesting and dynamic offenses, and a lot of creative offenses that probably wouldn't work in the NBA like the 5 out offense.
You guys are also comparing a team of student athletes, most of whom will go pro in something other than sports, with a national basketball association team.

Lebron is a thinking player. College players are drilled into the patterns and systems the coaches call. They’re not allowed to think for themselves
These are all small fixes as a defense and offense. Real thinking is when you can get a whole team to know where each other are and making offball screens and movement to fool a defense. Only the warriors and spurs in the past played actual team basketball that reads defenses
Do you think watching players like Doncic, Trae Young and James Hardin control the ball for 15 seconds is interesting basketball? How about players sitting on the 3 point line. Is that interesting?

I find it ironic they accuse college teams of lacking innovation, but when we send the American national team to play against European national teams with significantly less individual talent, those teams make the game close because they play with better strategies (i.e. more ball reversal). They should follow their own advice and use more optimal strategies in their games.

I'm watching March Madness rite now and they are explaining what I'm watching in college. They consistently miss open guys when they dribble off the high screen.
Are 3 point 35 foot shots with only the guy who dribbled the ball upcourt smart basketball? like Trae Young, Doncic and James Hardin does all the time?
@Gnofg well it's smart if your getting solid stops on defense and making shots at a high % on offense. Doncic takes 10 three pointers a game at 37%. The Atlantic Hawks are awful as a team on defense so they struggle. Luka's team has won 10-11 games. It's working because their playing solid defense as a team along with 57% from 2 pt range along with solid 3 pt shooting..The threat of teams making 3 point shoots opens up the lane from defenders so in return the offense gets high % shots. Bottom line is the top teams in the NBA lead the NBA in 3 point shooting, but the teams only shooting well inside the arc and not behind it struggle. The problem with college ball is the players miss too many open shots. Guys with the ball aren't good at facilitating the high screen offense. That's why you don't see many guys go from college to the NBA and be good as perimeter players running the offense immediately. Trae was at Oklahoma. He lead the nation in scoring and averaged like 10 assists a game. Soon as he got to the NBA, he did well. Most guys aren't good enough. College ball runs alotta old school offense still, guys make alotta mistakes, miss shots, so it looks like their playing better D then the NBA which isn't true at all in my opinion. The NBA offenses they run with awesome offensive players who can shoot, pass, and read defenses are impossible to stop. You just gotta pick your poison and hope they miss on defense as a team.

Most of the U.S. players have very limited coaching. You learn defense in college and most of the modern players don’t learn correct defensive position.
The game is out of balance. It should be a mix of low post, midrange and deep shooting. It is just deep shooting now.
When you play pickup do you shoot 3 pointers because if you are you are not a good enough shooter to take that shot. Amateurs do not shoot 35% and if you aren’t then you are doing worse.

As a high school coach, myself, I share the same anxiety watching my own team, sometimes. The example LeBron said, throwing the ball into the post to a guy who can’t do anything with it. I’ve told them not to do that countless times and they still do it. Part of it is they’re not at the level where they’re thinking out there. They’re simply playing on instinct and their instincts aren’t very good, yet.

This podcast is gonna make the average basketball fan smarter, and be able to understand what they see when watching a game
Don't get me wrong...I love that college basketball relies heavily on fundamentals but they need to clean those fundamentals up. I feel they play too fast, which doesn't allow schemes to effectively pan out. The elite college teams do. There's innovation but not too much of it. College baskeetball forces defenses to guess more than the defenses of the NBA. The NBA relies too much on mismatches. It works but it can become a flaw...making a team predictable.
Part of the problem with men’s college hoops is the really good players never play more than a year now.
NBA basketball today has no defense and too many three point attempts. Lack of getting back on transition defense, lack of helping the helper on defense, lack of offensive creativity, too much spacing which makes bigs innefective and not able to do valuable dirty work such as rebounding and boxing out. This creates a lack of second chance points which means less offensive rebounds. Teams just run up and down the floor and shoot a long range three wit no one at the basket to get missed shot attempts. Just running up and down the court jacking up shots and not working the ball inside the post and out to shooters on wing is disastrous. Yes, there are more possessions on offense today, but not longer and efficient ones of the older days. All of that stuff worked for Golden State with KD, Steph, Klay. But not every team has multiple players who can shoot like those guys. That’s what teams fail to realize. Use what you have. For example, if you have a bunch of big guys with talented post skills and passing, work the ball in the post and make plays for them. Hard to watch the game now. Why would you want someone like Shaq to shoot threes and miss.
Everyone who wants a productive modern style team should watch teams like the Kings. Mike Brown has a fast paced offense, but it is effective unlike many of the other fast paced teams in the league. Brown allows Domas Sabonis to drive into the paint, work in the post, and pass out to wing shooters. The whole offense is built around Domas, which allows for multiple defenders to collapse on him, Domas to pass out to wing shooters, and get free throws from fouls on him inside the paint. It is hard to succeed without a reliable inside presence, because the defense will just be able to deny shooters from getting the ball. If teams know that you never going to throw the ball to your 7 footer in the post, why would they ever guard the paint?
What drives me nuts is watching dudes who make 10’s of millions of dollars a year to play a game not put any effort in during the regular season and take nights off when working people pay 100’s of dollars to come watch you play

My biggest problem with college hoops is these kids will be down 1 or 2 with the game on the line and they'll take a 3 instead of getting a better shot at the rim or mid range.

I love college basketball. Teams run zone defense. More teams are running set plays instead of just ball screen action and iso. It's different styles instead of everyone running the same plays. Plus the tournament is being dominated by two big men that post up. Hand checks aren't called as much so the game can get more physical. It's way different from NBA ball and that's why I love it.

That was AR's fault. Rui and AD had him covered. All AR had to do was communicate to Rui to slide to Kuzma because AD had AR covered for the 2nd screen. You know Kuz is either going to pop out or slide back back, and Avdija was setting the 2nd screen in which AD was behind, so this would allow AR to slide back in front of Tyus Jones, and everyone can go back to their original defensive assignments. Easy defensive recovery.

college ball is popular for the reason it always has been, bc of the stakes and excitement of a single elimination tournament and the kind of personal investment people have in college teams. and the rate of isos is lower now than it has basically ever been, just bc you don't understand the plays teams are running doesn't mean they arent running more and more complicated actions

We have all played with chuckers and it sucks.

Nothing those guys said is magical or something a person that has played or does play doesn't already know. The reason bigs are horrible now and should get the ball in the post is because they are completely undervalued and no one develops their game anymore. Any good big man now would absolutely destroy the game nowadays because the game is soft.

Most teams don’t post up at an extremely high rate. But if you have a dominant big who can trigger doubles… you have an efficient offense. Don’t confuse an Epidemic of bad offensive bigs with a game that is evolving away from a big man.
Spot on. Also, them saying a leaner is not a real shot... that's a shooter talking. Shooting has nothing to do with hands, grace, skill, or touch. Only with ensuring you're square, repeatable mechanics, enough space to fire. In the post, it's different. If you're off 5% of your arc, it still goes in. It leads to a plethora of shots which are good enough on short distance, but impossible at a distance. Look at Hakeem, or Barkley, or the Mailman. They did all sorts of somewhat weird shots, where they found a tiny hole in the defense where they could toss the ball through. All the up and under, the reverse, the baby hook, they are possible nearby. That is all touch, remaining stable through contact, skill, and grace.
You can say Shaq was a beast, but he also had a pretty touch near the rim (but it fell into the mariana trench 5 feet out)
their point is that only the best bigs or somebody in a mismatch is worth posting up, while in college you regularly see them run a play where the ball gets chucked in to an unskilled big. it's the same as the midrange, you wouldn't want to run a play where the goal is for a mediocre shooter to get a midrange look
Great big men will always be able to dominate in the paint. Posting up is a great part of the game. Just because Lebron never had a post game doesn’t mean it’s obsolete.
That is an exception though. What they are saying is that in college, the team doesn't have anyone close to Jokic or Embiid's level and they are posting up for no reason.
How about player development? Maybe more players should learn how to post up and college seems like a good place to learn things.
I hear you guys talking about how hard it is looking at college basketball game but truth be told it is hard watching the NBA. NBA team do not play any defense until the playoffs and/or if they are trying to make the playoffs.Let not talk about the All Star Game. I cannot remember the last time I watched the All Star Game.

American coaching philosophy has not updated from the 80's - 90's. they need to look at Yugo and Euro basketball to update their team tactics and play.

because there are better shots. the other exception would be if a big has a huge mismatch, that would be a good shot too. the average value of an NBA shot has gone way up in the last 8 years because of pace and space and the plays that have come out of it. this whole episode is how a lot of these new popular actions are very hard to guard. the value of a hook shot from a mediocre big in the post hasn't changed. also, a specific thing to the post is that it's the easiest place to send a double and most bigs aren't good enough passers to reliably punish that, which is why jokic is a nightmare.
It's a couple of things.Big men are told to play small not big.You could literally score 12 -15+ points a game with a hook and a turn around jumper from one shoulder.Both shoulders 20-25+ a game.Embid in the games he struggles it's usually he's taken fade aways instead of power thru for more and 1's or free throw attempts.Teams don't have the bodies to guard a legit post player.You lose what you don't use.That's like being fast and not use your speed.It's ok to be a bully around the basket.
Feeding to the post for most bigs, who can't pass, shoot, put the ball on floor is suicide to rhythm. Think of all the things you have to do just to get to your preferred spot if that's your only weapon?

Bron has almost 20 years of coaching experience. None Aside Spo, none of the coaches that got him to finals had any business being there.
Edit: go watch a clip from Rondos interview with JJ. He described how in the bubble they were discussing that if they get Miami in the finals Bron has Spo and against Cs Rondo has Brad. As I said, Bron is a better coach than anyone he played for, aside Spo
I would add Ty Lue to that list as well.
Even Spo was a rookie coach during Bron's Miami days. IIRC, Spo got the head coaching job at the end of the 2008-2009 season and was HC for only 1 season before Bron got to the Heat.
I feel like this is wrong. You praised Spo so props to him. But what about Ty Lue, who everyone praises as a good coach. I believe Bron even praised Lue earlier this podcast or last podcast. Mike Brown just won CotY last year while also leading SAC to their first playoff series in over a decade and the year he coached CLE to the Finals, the Cavs had the 4th best DEF RTG in the league. Can't speak on Frank Vogel tho.

Second, Why should they change and bring these concepts in? Most college ball players aren't going to the NBA. They are there to go to school. Again the vast majority. Basketball should be the easiest part of the day.
My thing is there should be two systems. One for the guys that are judged to be very likely pro prospects where you are taught a more pro style game along with your education. Basically the academy system similar to Europe along with the system we know as amateur sports for those the rest.

I doubt he'll ever become a head coach. I think he'll get his own team as soon as he retires and then he'll run that and even though he'll probably give advice I don't think he'll actively try to coach.

They've made it clear that they're looking into getting an expansion team in Las Vegas and that LeBron will as co-owner be overseeing the operations of the team.
This has been known for quite some time. LeBron is also a billionaire on his own so while he may not have enough money to buy a team by himself, he certainly will be a co-owner in the next few years.

Alot of them just aren't good enough post players to justify it, or they aren't capable of playmaking from the post and overall, it's just inefficient because you bring your offense to a crawl for very little reason. It's fine as a last resort or if you want to give players a tiny break occasionally, but it happens more than it should.
