Im a shanghainese american. My mom never had the patience to teach me the language. I havent been to china in a long time and i never really made an effort to learn and retain new languages. Im older now and have better appreciation for things like this. Watching this video made me remember phrases i would hear all the time when visiting relatives and hearing my mom talk on the phone. Looks like im learning shanghainese.

A Shanghainese video from this year?! Miracles do happen...
I've been stalking Shanghainese videos for a long time now in order to hear more dialogue outside my little bubble at home, but I think this is the first time I've seen someone that speaks (mostly?) in the same way as my family (I am among the people that say ngu instead of wu lol). Nice vid!

Pretty cool, but maybe you can also tell people there are also a many of variants of Shanghainese or more accurately the Wu family of dialets which Shanghainese is part of. For example you can cross the Huangpu river in Shanghai to Pudong, and people there speak Pudong hua, Nanhui hua and many others... and they are very different. When I was very young, crossing over the river to Pudong for the first time, I was very confused because I had no idea what they there were talking about.

Your Shanghainese sounds very different to my wife’s. Even my son sounds different to you.
Unfortunately it’s a dying dialect as Shanghai people moved out/overseas in the nineties. Migration from the countryside and other regions have had a huge impact on the language in the Shanghai Prefecture.
My wife spent a lot of time running around the Yu Gardens when she was young. We went there but they started to destroy the surrounding buildings where she grew up. We managed to take some photos of the lane and the front door, but the house itself was destroyed. Second time we went, the lane had been turned into a massive bus park for tourists, which in turn has been rebuilt over. So now completely gone. Sad!
I liked Zhongshan Park and it’s shopping Centre. Used to walk from there down Yan an road into the city.

I have a funny story about being in Shanghai.
Im born in Canada and my first language is Shanghainese.
So my and my boyfriend (who is white) were visitng shanghai, after a subway ride i lost/left my phone on a bench. We ended up calling my phone and anyoung couple was saw earlier actually picked it up and eas waiting for us to return. So sweet. But as the norm is mandarin and im not as fluent in madarin i asked if he spoke Shanghainese and he said yes. I started spouting perfect shanghainese to him (he kept responding in madarin though) the sweet couple ended up bringing my phone to me. He said "i almost had a heart attack when i heard a foreigner speak perfect shanghainese, i was so confused" it was funny :)

Thank you for this video! I am interested to learn, but I find the sentences are said a bit too fast. It would be great if the sentences were pronounced a little more slowly (I can playback the video at a slower speed, but then the English become slower too.) It appears to me that this video is geared towards giving people a basic introduction to what Shanghainese sounds like, rather than actually teaching interested learners.

Because you are fluent in several languages, you may do well as an interpreter.
I have several friends who work as interpreters, it pays fairly well, by all accounts.
If you are literate and conversant in those languages, particularly if you have grown up with those languages, you may find the exams for qualification not horribly difficult.
By now you will be 18 and able to work.
No doubt you will do some tertiary studdy, working as in interpreter could give you a reasonabl income and some money of your own, while you studdy
One of my friends is qualified to teach both English and Mandarin, in both Australia and China, but she is bussy and makes more money as an interpreter

In this vocabulary presented here, there are predictable correspondences so it's not totally mutually unintelligible but just probably still very difficult like maybe how French and Spanish are- there's some mutual intelligibility but it's low, it's not like Spanish and Italian or Spanish and Portuguese where people can speak to each other if they speak slowly.
