    I get the whole .308 vs 6.5 creedmoor debate is a thing because the military chose to replace some 308s with the 6.5, but it really is a silly debate. One is a 30 caliber bullet and the other is a 26 caliber. There ya go, just settled the debate for you. The .308 caliber will have an advantage over the 6.5 in some categories, like better ballistics at " closer" ranges and the 6.5 does better further out. Here's the truth: if you like the .25-06, which you should because it's a phenomenal round that works great on medium sized game out to 300 yards (and further) then you'll like the 6.5 creedmoor better. It moves a little faster and hits a little harder past 300 yards, has more bullet options and under 300 yards the two are damn near identical. .308 is great, 6.5 is great, .270 is great, there's a lot of great calibers.

      The military shoots people not elk or deer. A hit on a human is a hit. If they die right away great. If they bleed to death in an hour, that is also great. Of course the military also shoots the .338 and the 50 cal when the really want to reach out and touch someone.

      I have had the .308 Savage and just bough a Tikka lightweight Hunter in 6.5. I feel like I’m cheating on the .308 as it has been a trusted friend. Anything I’ve shot with a .308 dropped right away. I shot a 200 lbs hog that dropped right away and my buddy hit one with a 7.62x39 that I had to finish with my .45.
      I kind of got seduced by both the Tikka which is gorgeous and the 6.5 which everybody raves about, but thinking about it, at the ranges I’d shoot at, the .308 will prob do a better job at dropping game, which is what this vid is about. I’m less a long range shooting guy than a hunter. I’m taking the Tikka hot hunting and we will see if it drops the hog as efficiently as a .308. At the end of the day I was thinking about a middle weight caliber like a 7mm 08 or a .270 so the 6.5 fit that bill so we’ll see how it does. I’m curious.

      @@58harwood How is it silly? Less bullet deformation relates to "projectile-barrel behavior during the interior ballistics process." Strain rate, bore damage, throat erosion, stability, the effect of increased heat on MV, lots of studies on all this stuff. It may not last as long if you compare a pencil 6.5 to a heavy .308 and believe the anecdotes, but you can expect both the .308 and 6.5 to start dropping off after about 3,000-4,000 rnds from quality barrels in most peoples experience, which is far better than most. They have very similar muzzle velocity and energy with the same weight loads.
      Perhaps I should have added context, that yes you can have the same barrel features in .308, but it's basically the iron standard for 6.5CM. Have even seen claims of 6k rounds from a 6.5 and still holding 3/4 MOA, but it's all conjecture either way.

    Personally I like the versatility of the .308 and I could shoot mine all day. 6.5 is available from 120 grain to 156 grain depending on your needs. The .308 is available from 140 grain up to 200 grain. If you want to shoot either of them flatter get a lighter grain, for more stopping power get the heavy grain. Pick your poison, both are very effective in the right situation. I personally went with the .308 because 6.5 ammunition is not as abundant where I live.

    Feel like you missed a lot of what has to be discussed about hunting between the two calibers by not talking about penetration and energy at the variety of ranges you might hunt at and what might be necessary for certain game animals at those yardages. You even said it was completely understandable that 308 was a minimum set by guides but then chose the 6.5 without setting under what conditions it would be your preference. Your video is confusing.

    I have kinda hedged on this by going 7mm 08, also a tested and respected cartridge. I am very happy with my choice. I shoot 140/150 gr bullets for deer, my particular rifle seems to like heaver bullets, but both 140 and 150 are effective one shot one kill for deer given reasonable ranges and shot placement. The 7mm 08 is very good but does not get the advertising dollars as the 6.5 does, it is however a hand-loaders dream! As a side note, my 7mm 08 loves cheap ammo, you don't need anything fancy to have accuracy.

    Same. I really enjoy the 6.5 Creedmoor. I want people to use whatever they want to use and enjoy their firearms and calibers. People will always hate the 6.5 Creedmoor and call it a bandwagon round. Fine, so be it. I don’t care at all. I love shooting it. I’ve had so many friends that have .308’s shoot my Creedmoor and then go out and buy one. It’s just an addicting round for long range target shooting.
    Now as for hunting... I think it can be used extremely well if the shooter knows it’s abilities and limitations. Can it take elk humanly and ethically? Absolutely 100%. Should you take a shoulder shot with it? Nope. Should you take a 800 yard shot? Nope. People need to be smart about it. Like Randy Newburn says, if you make a crappy shot with a .300 Win Mag, it won’t kill an animal.

      6.5 with similar weight ELD-X ammo maintains more energy than a .308 at 300 yards and beyond when both are fired from a 24 inch barrel. At 1000 yards the .308 has over 1.5 feet greater wind drift than 6.5.
      If you are shooting past 300 yards and are an ethical hunter then there is no logical reason to not view the 6.5 as a more capable round.

      If you shoot past 200-300yds then it matters, especially for hunters who need that 5 inches less of wind drift and drop at 400-500+ yards. 6.5 also has 20-30% less recoil depending on ammo weight making it inherently better for successive shots.
      Nothing wrong with the .308, at all, but if you're hunting past 300 then it's the difference between a wounded animal and a dead animal, or many dead animals.

The lighter kick on the 6.5 will improve accuracy for a lot of hunters. For me, I like 6.5 Creedmore for hunting to 500yrds and then for target shooting beyond that. Sound logic, as far as it goes, Glenn. However, the dilemma is that 6.5mm/.264-caliber slugs exhibit excellent BC and SD values as low as 120-130-grains in weight, and truly outstanding values from 140-150-grains, whereas the .308 does not get into good-excellent numbers until it hits 190-grains or so and above, which is really pushing the short-action .308 case. I'm a .308 fan, for sure, but you want physics working for you, not against you - whenever possible. Or as the competitors say, "High muzzle velocity is temporary, but a good BC value is forever"... and the problem with .308-caliber projectiles is their BC valves don't get really good until around 200-grains or so, which is really too heavy for the .308 case. Which, in a nutshell, is why the U.S. Army moved to adopt 300Win-Mag as their intermediate sniper rifle caliber. That case can handle up to 230-grains, hence the really slippery bullets in the 200-230 range. Far as .308 is concerned, it is an excellent all-around performer out to 800 yards, and in skilled hands, out to 1100 yards. Perfect? No, but adequate to very good.

      Yes it is an accurate comparison because for a 308 optimal powder burn is achieved at about 20 inches and around 24 inches for the 6.5.
      A 24 inch barrel will slow down a 308 projectile because after full powder burn at 20 inches friction robs speed for the next 4 inches of additional barrel length. A 20 inch barrel on a 6.5 will not allow for full powder burn so the missing 4 inches required results in a loss of achievable muzzle velocity.
      A short barrel will not allow for maximum muzzle velocity because full power burn is not achieved and long barrel after optimal burn is achieved will only rob you of muzzle velocity because of friction.
      Apples to apples a fair comparison between a 308 and 6.5 they must be a 20 vs 24 respectively. Likewise if you shoot heavy 147's from the 6.5 you need to shoot 168 out of the 308. Optimal barrel length, twist rate and bullet weight is caliber dependent so simply matching numbers is unrealistic for optimal results or comparison.

    6.5x55 Swede and 6.5cm launch the same projectiles at the sams velocities only 6.5cm benifits from modern bullet technology. 6.5 Swede is a popular cartiridge in Europe for up Moose size game it's a proven cartridge that's has been around over 100 years and has been game longer than 308.

    • @GeorgiaBoy1961
      @GeorgiaBoy1961 4 роки тому +1

      @ Gs Xr: The venerable 6.5x55 (Swedish Mauser) can do pretty much anything that the 6.5 Creedmoor can do. It's a long-action cartridge, so it can hold more propellant than the newer short-action 6.5 CM. But the 6.5 CM makes up for it by allowing bullets to be seated longer, giving more usable powder space. Still, if you trial them side-by-side, the 6.5x55 is capable of pushing the same slug 150-200 fps faster. I'll concede that the 6.5 CM is probably the more-accurate of the two, if that's your game - but properly tuned, the 6.5x55 is also capable of excellent performance in that department. It's a great cartridge, it really is. The Swedes and Norwegians (who also helped develop it) must be over there in Europe laughing their heads off, looking at all of the fuss about 6.5 CM and saying "What took you guys so long?" To me, the appeal of the 6.5 CM is that it can be used in platforms which already shoot .308. If you own an LR-308 AR platform that uses P-mags, you just need a 6.5 CM upper and you are good to go, since the cartridge works from a std..308 P-mag or equivalent. The 6.5x55 Swedish, is in many ways, their counterpart to our .270. IMHO, part of the reason the Swede never caught on here in N. America the way it did over there was because of the development of the .270 in the mid-1920s, a chambering that does many of the same jobs as the slightly older Swedish-Norwegian design.

    First let's start with the PRS questions, it's 2022 now and everyone in the PRS crowd has moved on. Most are shooting a 6mm something or a 6.5 PRS the trajectory on the 6.5CM sucks with the heavy BC bullets. Now that being said it is 2022 and we are in an ammo drought but there are some 6.5CM around, I'm making brass from 308 and the 6.5CM only uses 40gr of powder for most loads if your a handloader. As a hunting cartridge it excels like the 260 before it and is good for anything from Woodchucks to Whitetails. 90 to 150gr this is one of the best cartridges for the average guy that only owns one rifle or is buying his first rifle. 6.5 or 308 ? IMHO the 6.5CM is the way to go. Factory ammo is more expansive but it's cheaper to handload, recoils less, does less meat damage, is inherently more accurate in my experience and is great for almost any critter short of an ELK. It has a lot to offer.

    • @GeorgiaBoy1961
      @GeorgiaBoy1961 4 роки тому

      @ Mark: If you are new to precision shooting, many experts recommend getting a .308. It's inexpensive, common, well-sorted out ballistics-wise, and accurate factory loads aren't budget-breakers. Learn your fundamentals on the .308 and when you have learned enough, get into a specialist chambering like 6.5 CM. Bear in mind, too, that unless you have access to a range of 600 yards or more, the differences between the two cartridges probably won't matter as much, since the 6.5 CM only really starts to out-shine the .308 as distances increase. On the other hand, the 6.5 is tremendously efficient with most projectiles having an excellent BC and SD value, and they also perform better in the wind than .308 projectiles, much of the time. Somewhat milder recoil impulse, too, than the .308. As of now, .308 is cheaper but with 6.5 CM increasing in popularity, prices for it are dropping and becoming more-competitive. As for precision competition use, the 6.5 and 6mm rifles have pretty much replaced .308s as the preferred platform in things like the PRS (precision rifle series) competitions, etc. In terms of barrel wear, the 6.5 CM is harder on barrels than .308 - consequently, you'll have to replace the barrel sooner. If that's an issue, bear that in mind, too.

      7mm 08 is a great round and so is the 260. the 260 did have problems that caused it to never catch on. Remington has struggled for many years on twist rate, and that's what killed it from really catching on years ago. this is where the creedmoor out shines the 260. I know guys who have new 260 builds with 1-8 twist rates and they are amazing. 7mm 08 had similar issues.

    Love my 308, love my 6.5. For deer on longer range, 300-450 max hunts. Dropping animals in their tracks with both every time. I’ve never dropped a deer with my 7mm mag but never lost one thankfully. Heart shots ran 200 yards as well as double lung. I don’t even take it anymore because I constantly want to break down the shoulders and it just ruins all the meat. I’ve also never had a blood trail with the 7 mag. Point is , when it comes to hunting it’s all about how well it will preform on the game you hunt. I’ll never carry my 7 deer hunting but elk or larger it just expands better or something I’m not sure. Maybe it would work better way on out but I usually won’t shoot animals past 400. If I’m in the thick woods I’m carrying my 308. That’s my experience and my 7 is a tac driver but... don’t like how it preforms on deer . Side story. we had a 600 lb bear destroying our cabin and knocking the coolers off the deck and ripping the seats out of our buggies. As well as braking in the back door before we got there. We all shot it one night in the dark while it was trying to destroy everything and we yelled and it popped his teeth. It was dark but this bear was a problem for the cows too. Also because it was bear season and we had a tag. 30-06, and a 44mag the first night. It came back two nights later and we shot it with a 308 and had a blood trail. We caught up to it and it charged toward then was standing in the trail. My brother dropped it with a 22 mag pistol instantly. Apparently he shot it in the mouth and the bullet scrambled the inside. When we skinned it, the 44mag was wadded up in the ass end just barely under the hide. 30-06 went into the shoulder at a bad angle. It was dark that night and point blank with a scope so. However, just because my brother killed a 600 lb bear with a 22mag doesn’t make it a good bear caliber. I wouldn’t carry a 308 or a 6.5 for a bear, elk, moose trip.

But I will bet that the Remington 7mm mag. will out perform in close up and as far as you want to test them ! I keep 170 grain in it , but if the opportunity presents itself , it's nothing to drop the shell outta the throat , insert a 140 grain and i'm out to a thousand yards with no adjusting the scope , yes I'll hold a little high , but not much ! you can shoot FMJ's , Ballistic tips , hollow points speers , boat tails ,,, and their on the shelves !

      6.5cm's highest BC bullet ATM is 150gr at 0.713 and can be handloaded to 2820fps from a 24". 7mm08 can't compete that. There's a reason why Hornady's heaviest factory 260 load is 130gr. 260 has issues fitting the heavier for caliber high BC 147 & 150 pills in all magazine lengths that's the reason why SOCOM adopted 6.5cm over 260 and has rechambered their SR25's and MK20's.

      With similar weight, 6.5 at 143gr and .308 at 150gr, the 6.5 carries more energy after 200-300 yards and has 5+ inches less wind drift at 400-500 yards when both are fired from a 24 inch barrel, both with ELD-X.
      6.5 has 1:8 twist meaning less bullet and barrel deformation.
      6.5 has 20-30% less recoil depending on ammo weight which inherently means quicker and more accurate shooting from semiautomatic and automatic platforms.
      If you are within 300 yards then there is no real good reason to switch. If you are not then it's stupid not to if you are an ethical hunter and are able.
      With longer seating time and round the 6.5 has a flatter and more stable trajectory than most. If being within 300 yards is the goal then there's no good reason to choose .308 over even 7.62x51 as they have nearly identical BC at 150gr and the 7.62 carries more energy at 175gr.
      Hornady Precision Hunter is $5 more for .308 than 6.5 for 20rnds. Federal released an entire line of 6.5 loads.
      Got PMags for 7.62x51/.308? Guess what else they work with?

    I use Weatherby magnum rifles. Killed both brown and black bears, whitetail deers by the truckload.
    Nothing takes over 3 steps before they fall over.
    I don't shoot anything over 350 yards as a general rule because of the way I scout and place myself.
    My 7mm Weatherby mag will destroy both of those guns.
    That being said, the 308 beats out the 6.5 Creedmoor at 500 yards or less, has way better choices of ammo and you can buy 308 at any market you go to.
    If a longer range is required, a larger magnum round would beat out the 6.5 Creedmoor in distance and killing power.
    For target shooting, a guy can do as he pleases. But, hunting is not target shooting.

    Everything else being equal, the 308 has more FPE out to 600 yards and only beyond that does the 6.5 start to barely surpass the 308 in FPE. It's FPE that equals killing power and neither of these calibers should be ethically shot at game beyond that so the over 600 yard FPE is pretty much not relevant. I'm talking for large game here. The 6.5 suppose to achieve tighter groups, but if your limit is 600 yards and your 308 groups 3/4 inch at 100 yards and your 6.5 groups at 1/4 inch, what does it really matter on a deer size animal? I'm not anti creed more, it's just that I've been in the gun world long enough to see so many new in between calibers that are really unnecessary.

    • @gsxr1189
      @gsxr1189 4 роки тому

      6.5cm has better sectional density which leads to deeper penetration making the it better choice for large game than 308. For 125 years the Norwegians have killing moose with the 6.5x55 Swede which launches 140gr 6.5mm bullets at the same velocities as 6.5cm. Hornady has actual professional ballistics testing results(not UA-cam amateur testing) of both calibers on the LE side of their page which also shows that terminal performance of both are about the same.

    • @gsxr1189
      @gsxr1189 4 роки тому

      Also FPE doesn't lead to "killing power" (what is the mathmatical formula for killing power BTW 🤣). According to medical science it's destroying the heart, lungs, central nervous system, or causing a loss of blood pressure to the vitals that kills and deeper penetration of higher sectional density bullets reaches those vitals better.

    If you like shooting at 880 yards to 1760 yards then the 6.5 is for you. If you shoot at ranges less than 880 yards then use the 308. Little more work figuring the drop, but once it is at zero it is at zero. But - comparing calibers of rounds is just that a comparison. You shoot what you want because that is what you like. I have an Aero Precision M5 in 308. Since a 6.5 and a 308 are exactly the same except for the barrel and the BCG, I am thinking about building another upper assembly in 6.5 that I can switch out just because. But again, I will shoot the 308 75 percent of the time.

    Why does everyone want to compare the 6.5 creedmoor to the .308? The 6.5 is more ballistically comparable to the .270. Its like it wants to jump the .270 and 7MM and then do all the comparisons against the .308 but only comparing the bullets in the sweet spot of the 6.5 vs comparing these calibers at their respective sweet spots. The 6.5 sweet spot is right around the 120 grain while the 3.08 sweet spot is between the 165-180 grain. The kinetic energy transfer of the .308 is greater out to about 300-400 yards but after that, the creedmoor takes over. Always missing from the conversation is barrel burn out, cost, availability and range of bullet weights which the .308 wins hands down. The 6.5 is a great competition round and for medium sized game is agreat but not better than the .308. Ask yourself is the cost worth the nominal difference in accuracy? Havent seen where the .308 cant do everything the 6.5 can do

Been looking at the Ruger American in .308 or .243?????

    You covered the main subject NOT Wounding!!! Anyone can shoot far but knowing the fast kill range is most important. Every bullet caliber and weight has its own drop as well as barrel length and twist rate and rifle makers know and build best for caliber. I dropped my first deer with a 30 06 180 grain on a 100 yd. field a corner 150 yd. hit that I bought off a hardware store rack with scope on never zeroed my me, just saying! Yes many places to shoot long west of Ms. river, east for the woods and thicket hunter in a stand or blind you are lucky for 100+ even less if on a walk. I learned fast where on the cross hairs to aim for a 50 or 30 yd. many friends missed shooting high. My first had a part of ear shot off, someone tried a head shot (maybe). I changed to a semi auto 6.5 due to being treed by hogs one very long night. Some shoot power lines or cotton/soybean for the 500 + yd. on the east side.

    The 308 is definitely a tried and true classic round that is still a great option. But I personally prefer a flatter shooting round. There’s where a lot of 30 caliber rounds somewhat lose me at. My favorite round is 7 mm rem mag, it’s just an awesome all around round but like we all know a magnum round sucks to shoot after putting some rounds down range lol...I can’t lie I have grown to really love the 6.5 creed. A buddy of mine and I shot a few months back out to 700 yards and the 6.5 performed really well even with the shitty windy ass conditions we were shooting in and the recoil was non existent. Which anybody that’s shot a 308 can’t deny that it’s got some umph to the recoil. I was totally a 6.5 hater until I shot it.... I’d say some of my favorite rounds would be 7mm rem mag, 30/30, and the 6.5 creed.... 300 blackout least favorite round I bought a AR chambered in it and sold the upper within 6 months lol

Luck,,,,,,,,probably all that time practicing at 200yds may have helped. taste good, you bet. I would like to try a 6.1/2 creed. Boils down to what you want to do with it.
      Effectively, both cartridges are the same dimensions and use the same amount of powder, so it's not like the 6.5 is a tiny miracle cartridge, that trumps the big brother by some sort of magic alone.
      308 uses that powder efficiently to haul 150-200gr bullets downrange with 3000+ ftlbs in some cases.
      The 6.5 - while not quite on par energywise - is able to propel lighter, same BC bullets at higher velocities, resulting in somewhat reduced drop and significantly reduced wind drift.

      I hear every year that the “6.5 fad” will be fizzling out soon, and yet each and every year it grows in popularity. Now the 6.5CM has military contracts. It also dominates local, national, and PRS matches in terms of popularity. What is the argument here, that all these people who have ready access to both the 6.5CM, and the .308 are just going to suddenly come to their senses one day and stop preferring the 6.5? And go back to an old, reliable cartridge that doesn’t perform as well?
      Or are those naysayers just engaging in willful ignorance?

  • @Wollestar

    Over here in Europe we have a bit different way of hunting and also different demands. For example, the average distance we shoot at in hunting situations in Germany is 80 meters. So it is not that much of an interest to me, what the bullet is doing at 1000 meters. I mean, we don't even have shooting ranches with more than 300m. And we also have a minimum energy level, the projectile needs to have when hitting the game, so shooting any of these calibers above 250/300 meters would actually be illegal here. Wether that makes sense or not, I don't want to discuss. It is the law and I have to stick to it.
    A way more important question for me on the other hand is, how the 6.5 behaves in short barrels copared to the .308. The main reason I want to use a 308 is, that I can use a very short barrel (42-47 cm), so even with a silencer, the gun ist still compact and easy to handle while stalking or in a stationary seat with limited space. I just can not find any information on that. Maybe you guys have any experience with that?

    6.5 Creedmoor is more in demand... by target shooters. You are confusing hunting and target shooting together. And if you can't get closer than 1000 yards to an animal you are trying to harvest, you need to work on your stalking/ambush skills more than your marksmanship.
    Even 6.5mm is becoming passe'. The hot new kids on the block are the 6mm calibers.

  • @markholding7558

    On the hunting use of the rounds, thoughts on the killing capability? My understanding from watching both rounds penetrate ballistic gel is the 308 expands a lot more inside the gel upon entry and therefore is better designed to kill. Whereas the 6.5 doesn't expand much leaving a narrow wound tunnel. I think 308 would likely be a more ethical kill...? But 6.5 better for long range precision.

    • @GeorgiaBoy1961
      @GeorgiaBoy1961 4 роки тому +1

      Depends on what kind of game you are hunting and at what ranges. The .308 Winchester can handle larger, heavier bullets than the 6.5CM, whose projectiles top out around 150-grains in weight. Whereas the .308 can handle up to 180-185 grains without issue. The 6.5 has better ballistic coefficient and sectional density numbers, if those things matter to you. .308 caliber projectiles don't start to have really good BC values until they weight over 200 grains, which is really too heavy to be ideal for the short-action .308. 6.5 mm projectiles, on the other hand, have excellent BC values as low as 120-grains, and they get really good in the 130-150 grain area. Bullets alike, the .308 hits harder or just as hard inside 300 yards - it is only past that when the more-efficient 6.5 mm begins overtaking it due to its better efficiency. But if you don't plan to hunt at that range, the .308 will probably work fine. For medium game so will the 6.5 CM for that matter. Terminal ballistics-wise, the style/type of load you choose will make a big difference, which is where the actual ammunition manufacturers or a good outfitter/guide can steer you in the right direction.

The reason is people get caught in the hype and get stupid with it not knowing the hunters limits and the limits of the cartridge people are taking hail mary shots on elk in which it wasn't designed for. If you are going for elk with the 6.5 cm, keep your ranges 250yards and in and use a tough bullet like a nosler accubond or partition, I'd stay away from thin jacketed Vld's and eld-x's.
