Frozen Landscape by Ruth Pitts

Duet for alto flute and piano which was commissioned for a concert in Bristol in 2023 as part of the Bristol University Contemporary Music Venture.
I wanted to create something with a sense of conflict between the two instruments, spontaneously flowing through the cold textures and harmonies. The two instruments are instructed to play asynchronously at their own pace, with only a few points of synchronisation at the beginning of the sections, and with the exception of the middle section where they maintain a shared pulse but play in different metres.
It is performed by Rowena Marshall on the alto flute and Richard Jones on piano. Sheet music is available upon request.
