- New York City’s trash is no different than any other city’s trash - trust me, I was right there up close. To make sure there’s somebody actively thinking about what to do with all the trash, I visited the New York City Department of Sanitation’s Upper West Side Manhattan depot - a specialized garage of traditional garbage trucks and street sweepers, officially referred to as “mechanical brooms” in the biz, tucked away off the West Side Highway.
My “day on the job” paired me up with Kristen Shalbinski, a Manhattan broom operator who listens to movie soundtracks when she’s alone in her cab scooping up trash deposits, not bothered in the slightest by the road rage of illegally parked cabs and aggressive cyclists.

What a nice lady! A real asset to the department.
This is such a cool job! She was such a nice lady and seems like she’s really enjoys her job.
The city I lived next to had a woman street sweeper operator who worked with equipment for years. She had a sign made on her sweeper back bumper that said-
Watch where you are driving
This machine’s operator has her mind in the gutter.
He's really cleaning up. I couldn't resist
I can't believe I'm gonna say this, but I miss street sweepers.
Actually they are mechanical broom operators.
@@ACombineSoldier 😂
My city only runs them once every 2 years. Then they wonder why the storm drains are full of saplings and clogged every time heavy rain.
This is too cool love these sweepers fascinates me seeing them on the streets wow what a great broom operator very nice and enthusiastic
Very cool to see these jobs that a lot of people never think about.
I had the chance to drive this myself. Was kind of surprised considering I've never driven a street sweeper before. I did a great job cleaning their parking lot and only removed a small amount of pavement 😁. It's surprisingly easy to drive for such a big vehicle.
"I'm usually also bad at tests, so I think I'm kinda screwed" lol
that's the loosest safety belt I have ever seen
Ooh look a dust pusher car!
Safety is always number 1 in sanitation, hahahaha
Take it if u have no seniority and you want to stay days.Unless u dont need the truck money.Jump on it.Save save save..and start a 457 .Roth u won’t regret it when u retire and u have. Half million to a million dollars extra.U will be happy u did.trust me
Thanks for the advice. Maybe by the time I retire I will be able to buy a studio instead of sleeping in my car.
Lol 1 million will equate to nickels and dimes by the time you retire
👏 Thanks for sharing.
Fun watch!
Being a car channel, would be nice to talk more about the vehicle & the powertrain etc.
They are millennials - they cant understand that.
This channel feels like Vice now. I miss the goofiness of the OG Jalopnik.
U have to Score 100+ on this test to get on 100 of thousand ppl take this test .Good luck.

Cool
Never fight with the public you should’ve told him watch his mouth he could get in trouble
Isn't it a bit ironic that NYC's department of sanitation, who's motto starts with the word "safety", doesn't require its employees to wear a face mask in closed spaces with other people? While during that time everybody is living through one of the biggest sanitary crisis of our time...
Probably recorded over a year ago. She said that she started in summer of '17, and that had been 2 1/2 years before. So probably made in late '19, or early '20.
thank you for using listening skills lol@@williamjamesw
This could compete with Vice if it was a separate channel. If you need a graphic designer to do some work hit me up.
Those trucks are filthy try working on them
She’s so cute
Id love finding a woman like her!
Somebody (new editor?) has missed the point of Jalopnik. I get more views barely trying...
What IS the point of Jalopnik?
@@mylifeisJDM I can't say exactly except it's probably not Gary from Weird Science driving around in a street cleaner.
OMG, where is her hair net, obviously a component operator but working that close to machinery she really needs to watch a few safety videos in relation to scalps being torn off heads in industrial accidents
wht so hard drive a road sweep-er i done it for 36yr uk nw retired with full pension it easy job wht lift liteer rubbish
But you still can't write a proper sentence.
These operators are paid and unreasonably large amount of money. Which explains why it's so difficult to get one of these jobs
Not really given the cost of living in New York City. It's not unreasonable at all.
@@ACombineSoldier when you consider with somebody of the same skill level would make in the private job market; they are insanely overpaid. Not to mention the amazing benefits and spectacular pension.
@@kevinbarry71 That's because of unions not fucking people over unlike some of the private sector.
Kevin Barry it's not just sanitation workers that get a good salary, lots of NYC jobs get good or above average pay because of NYC's (& surrounding areas) cost of living. Average 1 Bedroom Apartment in a bad neighborhood a.k.a. "The HOOD" cost $1,800 to $2,300 a month. Wanna live in a "Good Neighborhood?" A 1 Bedroom in a "Good Neighborhood" will cost you from $2,800 to $3,500 a month.
Utilities not included, except water.
Pets will be more, will a $500 to $1000 non refundable upfront payment.
Jalopnik is turning into Vox with the title, production, and editing 😔 gentle reminder that this is not a good look sweaty
I dont even know who this is. Or the two mechanics. Jalopnik has come a long way.
