- Sydney is being lashed by a huge storm and a tiny penguin has been washed up on Bondi beach.The little fella is malnourished and having trouble standing up. When Chris discovers what is causing the problem, he is shocked and forced to make a tough decision.

I still can’t believe that penguins could get ticks. I guess it makes sense because penguins have fur just like other mammals so they should be able to have ticks

Glad to see that George is still doing great (lucky guy to have Chris for his dad), still can't believe someone would be that cruel. SMH. Another save, treat and release, great job per usual.
George passed away a few years ago he has an other rescue cat named cricket now this is from an old episode

I had no idea that there are penguins in Australia, or that there is a species so small! Apparently they're called "little penguins" or "fairy penguins". They live in Australia and New Zealand, have a lifespan of 6 years, adults grow to be 12 to 14 inches tall, and weigh just 3.3 lbs. Sadly, they're eaten by whales, seals, and sharks.
Harmon is so small and vulnerable. I really hope he's safe and happy out there, somewhere.
There are heaps of Penguins, seals, etc. Come to Phillip Island, Vic. Heaps of Penguins on Parade every evening.

At one time here in South Africa the penguins were dying then they discovered they had babiosis - tick bite fever!
This penguin is already an adult lol, it's a different species from the penguin we see in the movies. You can tell he's not a baby just by looking at his feathers.

A full grown dog can die from ONE of them. so yeah this poor baby penguin is VERY infested. It was killing him.

… because in the US pets do NOT die from a single tick. Ever. I have had ticks myself, I’ve taken them off of my pets and other people’s pets my whole life. My cats have 1-4 at any given time during the summer. This is normal.
Depends on where you live. There are roughly 900 species of ticks around the world and about 90 of them can be found in the US and are fairly limited to about 16 states. Of the 90, there are only 5 are known to carry pathogens: Blacklegged, American Dog, Brown Dog, Lone Star and Rocky Mountain Wood. It should be noted that these are 'hard' ticks. The ones that are mostly found on dogs and cats are the 'soft' ticks.

When I saw how relatively calm he was, not trying to peck or scratch 😬 Poor Little fella really needed help. I'm so glad the medication worked without causing a reaction. Hopefully Little Herman is out there getting nice and chunky and will rejoin his colony come moulting season.

When I shifted to an apple plantation in the country, my dogs started getting these ticks... It's really shocking how much they can affect the health of every animal they latch on to... I check both my dogs everyday, but sometimes they get as big as the ones in this video... My vet gave me a solution that I have to apply a drop off of the dog's spine... It's really effective!!!
These vets are amazing people!!! They're doing wonderful work here...
If you ever watch the videos from Takis Shelter in Crete you'll see they have tablets that they give to the cats and dogs that kills off the ticks and fleas within hours and protect the animal against these parasites. I'm not sure how often it needs to be repeated, but it seems a if all the staff travel with some in their cars just in case.
Chris is a wonderful human being saving helping the animals. My cats love his grain free cat biscuits!!

This was such a sweet story with the penguin! I hope he can find his friends! And it's so funny seeing his place then! I would've expected he lived in some really fancy, expensive place by himself or with his partner. I did not expect to be reminded of a typical Sydney sharehouse with the flatmates and the mismatching couches and the dodgy kitchen with the little fridge everyone has to share haha
This video is from the very early days of Bondi vet, so several years ago. I daresay his accommodations are a little more upmarket now.

I am so happy that this wee penguin survived by some great people....Chris saved his life with serum that saved him with tick antiserum. He's healthy. And will join his mates.
So I wouldn't say two ticks is an infestation but hey it is unusual to see ticks at all on a penguin. I happily watch Dr. Chris and Scot and the rest of the life saving crew. Please keep doing the best you can for animals.
I've heard chickens can carry ticks, so a penguin isn't too out of spec.

Are you going to send the ticks to a lab to get them checked out? I know of course you probably won't find the specific penguin again but finding out where the ticks are coming from might benefit any researchers studying the penguins maybe even help them protect them if they can figure out where the ticks are coming from.
Paralysis ticks are pretty much everywhere on the east coast of Australia, so nothing really to be gained. They hide in low growing bushes, grasses etc. & are very common.

@@qyarn588 Not a microbe. The paralysis ticks produces a toxin that is injected into the host when they feed. It's not like some of the other tick transmitted diseases. Humans mostly experience an allergic reaction to the toxin, often a headache. I've never heard of anyone severely affected or dying though (according to the literature) there have been rare instances.

Ticks are everywhere, Maxwell. They could have been brought to Australia 250+ years ago from transporting European domestic animals in the country for food and milk. Nobody bothered to check the animals for fleas, live, ticks, worms, parasites, etc. They just chucked them in cages and off to Australia they came, including foxes, cats, dogs, rats, as we know it. Bit by bit, over the years these pests spread out and wide, in fields, forests, barns, houses and on all wild and domestic animals. A bonanza of blood gold for them all. Foxes, have them, Koala have them, Kangaroos, Emus, Dingos, Parrots, even snakes have them not to mention rabbits, Hares and Porcupines. As if the dilemma is not enough, they are also on birds of prey as well, Falcons, Eagles and even seagulls and now, Penguins? While our number one enemy is the silent and dreaded mosquitoes. We also have those little night vampires, the bed bugs. Another absolute pest is the leech. Man shouls have been born like the electric eel. Nobody gets to touch that. A 300V zap is all it needs to clean their body of parasites. Who thought that life is a bed of red roses?

ticks could stick to anything from mammals to birds, and even reptiles from what i’ve observed.
Anything that has blood, warm or cold, can get ticks. Even ticks can get ticks.

ticks don't like the (at least salt) water, little penguin got washed up on shore and basically got jumped by the ticks while penguin was trying to recover from the bruising

For 7 months of the year Little penguins spend the night on land, at their colony - in this case the foreshores of Manly near the bushland reserves. Sydney bushland contains ticks, so Manly is the most likely source-- as Little penguins dont come ashore anywhere else other than their colony. The vet thought that the penguin was already weak from hunger and dehydration, which suggests that the ticks had been on the bird for some days. It's highly unlikely that the penguin got the tick at Bond where it was washed up-- Bondi just isn't bushy enough for ticks, not the right habitat. If people could get ticks at Bondi Beach, that would really turn the beachgoers off!

I was so happy to see you made George part of your family as hard as you worked to save his life I believe it bonded you and George for life the life you gave back to him the trust in a human after one could betray and hurt him so. To live through such a traumatic event can effect an animal just as it would a human . George needed you after you saved him emotionally he needs you to trust again and to relieve him of his PTSD I'm glad I get all his love and loyalty you deserve it. I'm glad were able to save the penguin you had to take a chance but you didn't have a choice and it worked out perfect but at least in the future you know that the serum could be an option for another penguin if that ever happens again.
Bondi Vet is part of my day. The amount of diverse knowledges, the skills and the improvisations these vets make, and the information for viewers make my world so much larger. Thank you Dr Chris and the Bondi family.

I was not fully convinced about his total recovery by the end, that little bit of struggle he had made me doubt a lot on his survival in the wild.

One of my favorite memories as a child is when I found a common murrelet on the beach in Oregon. There was lots of dogs nearby and I knew they weren't supposed to be on the beach, so my mom and I took him to a wildlife rescue center two hours away. I hope he's doing well today...

I used to live in the southeast of the US where ticks are common. People use guinea fowl to eliminate tick infestations and the side benefit is guinea also eat fleas.
Man I mis the guinea fowl. I live in Oklahoma and they've disappeared from my area. Haven't seen them since 2009.

Hard to think of a penguin with tick bite sickness. Dr. Chris you're such a big hearted guy. I admire your approach to your profession. Sometimes things are regular and routine. I love when a case is challenging and to watch you interface with the patient and the animals owner. Then you go into action. You have good instincts and your courageous and not afraid to take risks. God Bless you. Think how many patients you saved and even more gratifying is the fact that you are healing and educating the owners. By word of mouth you do much good for your profession.
