The Nespresso Vertuo and Original lines both make single-serve coffee. However, each model operates differently and uses different pods, which leads to different taste. So, which one is right for you? In this video, we explore the differences between Nespresso's Original and Vertuo machines, discussing their functionality, taste, drink options, pod offerings, and costs. Spoiler: taste is not the most important factor in choosing.

This is the most helpful video I have seen in quite some time. Thank you!
I have both, recently added the vertuo POP. I am selling off my OL machine as I like a larger drink, at least a double espresso and more. On the OL, I end up using 2 capsules for each drink. In fact I like my coffee so strong that I use a 150ml pod n stop the brewing before it reaches the full 150ml capacity. As for cost, I reckon 2 OL capsules cost more than a single vertuo. At least in my country.
Great review. Thank you.
Just as a video maker, got to commend you on great audio!
Thanks! Audio is something we work on a lot.
Love my Vertuo, but like the presenter i prefer a larger cup so almost all my capsules are the 7.7 oz. Which is perfect for my Nespresso thermal mug
Really great video
Thank you! I have the original along with reusable metal pods. It was quite an investment. Every morning I enjoy my double espresso with half and half with a little date syrup. Texture is a large part of that. Since then I've acquired a husband who prefers the french press. I'm considering going with the vertuo (black friday) to get something we both like.
I bought my machine used in 2016 so it's not like I'm ditching something brand new either.
If you're thinking Vertuo, get the Vertuo Plus or Pop! Both are on sale and you can see my comparison here: ua-cam.com/video/0U5t8tL7ObM/v-deo.html
@@craftcoffeespot thank you for all your information and advice. I did some shopping last night and kept thinking about how I've found pods I like for 25 cents each. My husband is much easier to please. I think he would be happy with a refillable K-Cup. I also found some combo iced tea makers which would solve 2 problems. So I'm going to look down that path. I'm sorry I couldn't help with your affiliate links but I'll like and subscribe.
thank you for the support@@cynthiapowers8139
Nice video. Looking forward to video in how to reuse the vertuo pods.
Thank you! We’re editing the reusable pod video this week.
Thanks for doing this. I just ordered the original and I’m second guessing it.
If you're ok with small espresso drinks, you'll be fine with the original. Switch if you want a bigger coffee.
@@craftcoffeespot thanks! I drink all kinds of coffee throughout the day and have the various makers on my coffee bar, so I think the original will be fine. I appreciate your feedback.
@@GwenMotoGirl Original makes sense then. Happy to help!
@@GwenMotoGirlThe original are more than fine. My friend has the new and they are good but the cost is stupid.
@@papabear463 thank you! I’m loving the original. About to enjoy a cup right now.
The pod availability especially by cheaper third party brands make the original a clear win for me
I’m not a long coffee drinker but I got a Vertuo to sit with my original and I plan to get rid of my original eventually. I think expert mode makes the Vertuo a better option.
Expert mode?
Just got the original ❤
Oh, sorry...meant to say great review. Thanks.
i heard most coffee shops use a double shot espresso for their lattes and espresso drinks so if i plan to do that i assume i would need vertuo?
You can make a double shot size on both. Vertuo is more for full cup sizes and richer taste.
What about the Citiz vs vertuo plus? Thank you!
It’s the same conclusion as this video. I tired the Citiz and it operates the same as the Essenza Mini OG line. Citiz has more cup clearance.
What is the brewing temperature of the Vertuo vs Original?
Original definitely gets hotter, probably 200 vs 170 for Vertuo Plus and 150-160 for the Vertuo Next. I don’t notice much when doing the Vertuo Plus because it brews longer, but you’ll notice a cooler, weaker drink for Vertuo Next and Pop.
I dont drink a lot of coffee but when I do I usually have latte or cappuccino & have been trying to decide on what machine to get
I'd go Original, as you'll be fine with smaller pods. And get the Aeroccino 4 for milk frothing! Our video -> ua-cam.com/video/ydKUYmbprl4/v-deo.html
I went with the vertuo as my brother is a coffee lover so he can have some decent coffee when he comes & I'm trying some of the decaff so excited to get using it
will the original vs vertuo matter if you only use it to make an iced caramel machiatto?
Yes, better coffee will make a better drink. Vertuo has iced drink pods too.
Is the vuerto coffee hot enough?
Temperature is an issue for Vertuo, but the pods have more coffee and brew for longer which makes up for the temperature. Plus more drink sizes.
@craftcoffeespot is it true that the original machine makes a better crema in comparison to the vertuo? After a couple of minutes, the vertuo crema looks deflated and like gunk compared to the original, any truth ?
That’s accurate on crema. But does it matter for taste?? Vertuo has better coffee, stronger ratio, and longer contact time that makes for a better taste.
I admit - I don’t like the Vertuo crema, but if you swirl the drink a few times, it’s gone. Crema is just CO2 and a by-product of extracting fresh coffee - crema doesn’t actually taste good.
For latte art Who is the Best original or vertuo?
@@g.gadegaard1462 they’re the same. Espresso pods will work for both. Original is only espresso.
Started off with an original machine and then went for a vertuo. I got rid of the vertuo and went back to the original line, I didn’t like the weird foam that comes with a lot of the vertuo pods
Pretty consistent feedback - many people dislike the thick crema.
@@craftcoffeespot that’s the thing though it’s not crema it’s foam from how those machines brew the coffee
Does the original have less caffeine?
Yes, because original has less coffee. 5g coffee per original pod, while small Vertuo have 7g coffee.
LOL. The sheer simplicity of the original is far more simple than the barcode and multiple sizes or the Vertuo.
The Vertuo is as simple from the user perspective.
The bar code is a cynical move.
Confused, where are the pods for Zenius?
?
I only drink lattes, so the original would probably be better for me?
Original will work better for you. The biggest draw of the Vertuo is the larger drink options. Vertuo has great espresso pods, but they’re more expensive. I’d check out the Aeroccino frother for lattes (see our other video)
@@craftcoffeespot brilliant, I will do thank you 😊
Mmm… Original: real espresso, high pressure, real crema, higher temperature, 3rd party pods, Vertuo: strong drip coffee, aerated foam which increases with cup size, lower temperature, expensive bar code pods, makes larger cups by packing more grounds to a bigger pod. I finally “upgraded” to an Essensa Mini after making the mistake of getting the Vertuo. When I want just a rich strong larger cup of drip coffee, there are much cheaper way to do so and without getting a thick layer of aerated foam.
The aeration process and longer brew time at a lower temperature produce a more balanced extraction that tastes much smoother. They definitely choose better beans for the Vertuo pods too. The pods are expensive no doubt, but better IMO.
If you just want a small espresso, then obviously Original is better. Both options blow away keurig and drip coffee.
Well the Verttuo doesn't have anything except the nesresso brand in capsules whereas the original has a lot of other brands available
Yes, I said that in the video, very clearly…there’s a whole section on it…
Yes, but you’ll also be limited by the size of cup.
if all i'm making is affogatos, i think the original is where it's at. i dont like the vacuum cleaner sound the vertuo makes lol.
$1.10 for a pod is way too much... Nespresso killed them silves because of greed
Way too much? Try getting Starbucks
@@Tygrysek1993 yes i love the strabucks pods for my Nespresso original line machine
I have both machines. I hate the bitter, frothy “crema” from the Vertuo.
Wrong, you're only locked in to the Virtuo, the original the patent ran out in 2013 meaning it's open season for the original.
That is what I said. A whole section of the video talked about more pod options and lower pod cost for original machines because of the patent.
You need to rewatch and listen (this time).
I hated the vertuo. The water is too hot and the pods are expensive and none of them compared to the original. Also not being able to use anything but nestle stuff is a rip off. I bought another make, which i prefer, and I'm not supporting a company that has rotten ethics.
Which one did you get ?
@@gamedayindia4329 I ended up getting a L'Or. Great offer on it when I bought it, and good reviews. Makes two espressos at once! ( lol)
The L'Or coffee itself isn't the best, but it takes any other pods. Very happy!
