One thing I do like about the Northern Air Temple story being integrated into the Omashu plot line is that it touches on the story of how people become refugees in a war that's different from the OG show but it still works. In the OG show, Teo and the mechanist become refugees when they're home is destroyed by a natural disaster (a flood to be exact). They move into the northern Air Temple to make a new life for themselves, even though the war follows them there eventually.
Here, their home was attacked by the Fire Nation and so they move to Omashu, a city that seems heavily fortified from invasion but also has thriving markets. Teo's dad even ends up working for the king! I like this because during a lot of wars in history, the countryside is often pillaged because villages are less defendable, and armies often raid them for supplies on campaign. These people whose homes are destroyed then end of flocking to larger cities for security and potentially finding work. When I saw these plot points being combined in the trailer, I was skeptical at first but I'm alright with it.

It actually makes way more sense than settling in the northern air temple. According to Aang(our only source about Air Nomads lore), air temples cannot be reached unless you have the means of transportation by air. Fire benders used the power of the comet to fly but how did a community of refugees get up there and second, as you said, it makes more sense to settle in the earth kingdom stronghold under the protection of Omashu's walls.
The only plot hole created by Netflix is that Sai has little to no reason to work with the fire benders given the fact that Omashu's well defended and there's no way the enemy could blackmail him with the safety of his son and his own. If anything, helping fire benders put Sai and Teo.in more of a danger since he could've easily been executed for treason.
I wish they saved him being a traitor for the second season, when Omashu would be occupied

I believe the issue with how the writers did Katara is that they tried to remove the more 'controversial' traits of hers, things like her outbursts and any negative emotions outside of the sadness about her mother. I think they did this because there's a specific group of avatar fans who really dislike Katara so the LA writers were trying to make her more 'likable' but in the process removed so much of what made her great. Cause y'know, female characters are often judged a lot more harshly for being anything outside of meek and mild than their male counterparts.

hey have you ever thought of making a edit of the live action version of a Atla character vs the cartoon one? I used to be an editor just like you and people did that a couple of times in my day. It can in terms of writing or a fight.

  • @rafaelmatos5851

Many people have issues with the actress portraiting Azula and I can understand it. However, OG Azula was written espeifically to be an intimidating villain... something that is reflected on her design (with her sharp features and clothing) and personality (pratically psycopathic). But in a live-action, a character needs to feel realistic and that's what they brought for this version of Azula. This version can really brought up the immense pressure she was in her pursue to be perfect in order to conquer her father's approaval and affection and how she saw Zuko's success as a threat. Not to mention how her "sweet" look can serve as a perfect disguise for her more ruthles side. Nevertheless, Azula is still as conniving as the OG version and that is awesome.

5:32 I actually liked that she was just given the scroll. It makes more sense to me. Her grandmother gave it to her as she was leaving, because she is the last waterbender in her tribe. Makes more sense to me than some random pirates having the scroll and stealing it from them. 😅

I think I agree that the characterisation of Katara wasn’t the best this season. Even in the OG series, I feel that her best moments are sort of scattered between being a prodigious waterbender, a motherly figure, her mother’s death and a love interest for Aang. She’s a hard character to get right and I don’t envy either the writers or Katara’s actress. However, I think they have set a good base for improvements in the future seasons 😁

they focus on zutara A LOT (more than aang and katara at least) they portray kyoshi as a brutal assassin ( which is how most of the fandom view her )
and 90% of katara's scene is just her talking about her mother which we all know was NOT like this in the og series

This is the first time I started to have problems with this adaptation. I understand that given limited time, combining arcs from different episodes was necessary and I'm ok with that. But the way it was handled was so clumsy.
    1. The mechanist being in Omashu makes sense. He and his son are refugess, so settling in the second remaining earth kingdom stronghold makes sense. But here's the thing, him giving fire benders designs makes zero sense in the context of this show. He's behind Omashu's walls, under the protection of an earth kingdom military. Why would he cooperate with the enemy?
    2. Jet and the freedom fighters have no business existing in Omashu. They literally have nothing to fight agaisnt like they did in the show.
It should've been handled in a much smarter way.
    1. Cut the mechanist being a traitor storyline. Save it for next season, when Omashu will be occupied and Sai would actually have a reason to work for the fire benders.
    2. This is more of my personal suggestion but i think that would be a very creative way to fix Jet. Conbine Teo(the mechanist's disabled son), Haru(from "Imprisoned" episode) and Jet into one character. Show his bloodthirsty attitude towards the fire benders, foreshadowing him forming the freedom fighters in the second season. Once again, him leading a resistance will make far more sense under occupation. His anger at Bumi will also be justified given that he surrendered the city. You could even make him disabled in the end of season two after encounter with Dy Lee istead of killing him off.
Combining different storylines was always the only way to make live action work but it should've been done smartly and not in such uncreative, illogical way.

I don't fully like how they showed ozi.
No problem with the actor or his performance, he's perfect.
But in book 1 and 2 he's coverd in shadow and they don't show his face until book 3 and it makes him feel more intimidating.
But it's more of a nit-pic and 1 of I think only 3 small problems I have with the show.

For Katara - I kinda get the gripe that they've tamped down her character - but only to a certain point. While Katara does have a lot of anger and courage in the OG ATLA, she doesn't really start out that way in season one. In the first season, Katara is sweeter, more reserved. She has moments where some anger comes out, but she's softer, more emotional. It's when they get to the Northern Water Tribe where we really see her anger come out. And then in season 2 after she;s mastered water bending, we start to see her impatience, attitude, and rage. I think that's what they're doing here... giving her moments of anger but no true rage - not yet. At least, I hope that's what they're doing. Building it up instead of showing it at the start.

  • @Fujitsyu

An interesting thing when comparing the shows is how the episode length vastly changes the experience. When discounting the stories they chose to cut the total run time is basically the same for season 1. With 20 minute episodes they managed to tell a very compelling story each episode, with a clear plot and purpose. It also made it possible to jump to a vastly different location every 20 minutes. If we were to follow the cartoon perfectly, but doing 8 long episodes instead, I think it could lead to it feeling very rushed. Imagine them visiting Kyoshi, travelling to Omashu, and then helping Haru all in one episode.
Combining stories like this is quite a clever way to include a lot of the stories from the cartoon, without having to quickly travel between locations. However, as someone who's watched the cartoon multiple times it also makes it feel like just that, multiple episodes squeezed together, so I think it works better for those who haven't watched the original. Personally I was open to a much looser adaptation. Focusing on the character journeys for S1 and making up new stories to fit that if needed would have been very interesting. When the focus is on retelling as many stories as possible you risk losing focus on the personal journeys of Aang, Katara, Sokka and Zuko. But I also get that it can be fun to witness your favourite moments from the show in a more realistic style.

  • @rafaelmatos5851
    @rafaelmatos5851 4 місяці тому +1

I feel like that part of the reason why we don't see much of Katara's fiery nature is due to the fact the live-action is much shorter than the OG show. That is always the downside with shows with few episodes, they can never develop the character as better as the ones with more episodes. Because the live-action only has 8 episodes, they were forced to cut, combine or change many parts of the OG, what includes those moments where we see Katara's intensity. Because of that, we see more of her hopeful side, instead of the scenes where she loses her temper. It's not like we don't see her losing her temper. She still does it, but we only get to see it in especific moments of the live-action.

The changes done to Azula and Ozai's characters are kind of a double-edge sword for me because while I do quite like that the way Azula was abused is more explicit here, I don't know how much of Azula in general they'll have to change to make the character work with the additions. And before someone says it, yes Azula was abused even in the original, just because she was the favorite doesn't make the way she was treated fine, and yes some people do deny she was abused at all. I'm open to the changes if the later seasons follow up on them well enough.

I actually don’t think the combination of multiple plots here was fine primarily due to show time. This showed total showtime is not that short compared to the original show. The episodes are each more than twice the length of the original series episodes, and even if you only counted it as 2x, that would be 16 episodes worth, and just dropping The Great Divide alone means they only need 19 to do everything the same. It’s true they added various things such as more of the timeline 100 years ago, Azula, etc., but even then they dropped other stories so they weren’t that pressed for time.
They did need to combine some things for the longer episode format of course, and another big factor was probably the cost of sets and costuming. Dropping the Northern Air Temple location is unfortunate, but it probably saved them a huge amount of money in sets, moving shooting, and possibly different costuming, etc.
I think you can see the sets and other cost reasons behind a number of other decisions as well, although there are certainly some changes they made that seem random, especially coming soon….
    Great reactions as always!

i hate how everyone excuse the runtime for mashing things together but making it 8 episode is their decision from the start , they could have made it 10 or 12 or 15 episodes but they didn't did that so either make mashing stuff proper , give justice to storylines and don't f up everything.

Zet actions were so extreme in ATLA OG here no harm done and he got stopped so easily.
