    Ok, the NATLA writers have to decide what their target audience is because after this episode it's clear they have no idea.
    In the previous episodes, they inserted a loot of things that new fans would struggle to understand and appreciate, while old fans would get and kinda appreciate.
    In this episode they did the opposite: for a new fan who never watched the show and doesn't know OG Bumi, this Bumi is a good, complex character who you can relate to. For an OG fan, though, this is basically a spit in the face.
    Having said that, Lu Ten's funeral scene was... WOW, I don't have enough praises to give to that scene. Whoever wrote it deserves a raise just for that. It was intense, beautiful, sad and full of passion.

      I can tell you right now who their target audience is. They are going for the audience that is older than the audience of the animated show (like young adults) yet for some reason dumber than the audience of the animated show. Like they are trying to insert things that are supposed to be “mature” but it turns out to be way more childish than the themes that were present in the OG show to a point where it feels like they are trying to insult viewers’ intelligence.

    I think having Bumi tell his name early on was perfect. It represented real life. Bumi's laugh is distinguishable and Aang would right away tell from it. Also, you have to focus that Bumi was alive for 100 years of War that he fought to keep his city safe while the entire world collapsed. The Netflix version represented that. The original was great but it was cartoonish and enjoyable tho.

After Zhao only acknowledged him as a soldier, we see just how much humanity Zuko has by acknowledging him as a person.

Not really complaining I think it's a cool aesthetic and helps Omashu feel distinct from the rest of the Earth Kingdom. OK so I'm a bit mixed on Bumi.
    First off, on the subject of Aang figuring out it's Bumi right away, I've heard some people who have watched the OG show as adults say that the twist that Bumi is the old king is pretty obvious, so the writers here probably wanted to do something different here. At least that was my theory, I don't know what went on when they made that decision.
    Anyway, as for Bumi's character here; on the one hand I get that he's a little bitter. Like he said, he's been fighting this war for 100 years, the world he and Aang used to share no longer exists and he's had to make hard decisions as a leader. If you were the leader of a large city and it was your responsibility to protect and lead it for 100 YEARS, that can really change a person. In a vacuum I also understand the lesson he's trying to teach. As the Avatar, Aang will have to make hard decisions and people are counting on him. The problem is that these lessons conflict with the larger context of the show at the moment.
    - For starters, Aang made it clear he needs to reach the Northern Water Tribe to prevent another tragedy from occurring and Bumi is holding him up. "It's nothing but games with you Aang." "Bumi, I'm literally trying to save an entire nation here man!" Like, if Aang was just being playful and not taking the situation or his job as the Avatar seriously, then Bumi's temper might be a bit more understandable but sometimes it felt a little off.
    - In this adaptation Aang didn't run away, he left for a moment to clear his head with full intention of coming back but he got caught in the storm while his people were wiped out simultaneously. So, when people say he "abandoned the world" or stuff like that, it doesn't hold as much weight.
    - Also, small nitpick but I figured him offering Aang a meat dish and a vegetarian dish was him testing to see if it was Aang (or at the very least a true Air Nomad) but if he knew that already, it just seems out of place.
    So yeah, I don't HATE what they did with Bumi but I will say I think that he could have been written a lot better. My problem isn't that they changed Bumi's character, my problem is that the changes they made feel odd in context of everything else we've seen in this adaptation so far.

    The 1 thing I will admit I did not like about this show was the way they changed Bumi. I get why they went the route they did with his character, but he was so likeable & funny in the original series yet he feels like a different character here. Also, while I wasn't upset that we got the hippies in the show, I was confused as to why they included them in Season 1 over Haru & the prison or firebending with Jeong Jeong.

    I think that the writters decided to truly embrace the impact that war has on everyone, especially one that lasts for 100 years. Even if the live-action is similar in story to the OG version, it is completely different. The OG version does a wonderful job portraiting war... considering it's kid show. But the live-action is more mature, so it dwells on the real darkness of war. I guess it is logical they decided to remove most of the light-hearted traits in things and character. Bumi, in the OG show, was the mad yet genius king that was able to keep his inner child. However, live-action Bumi was shapped by the heavy responsability of being the leader of one of the two Earth Kingdom strongholds that keep resisting the Fire Nation, a responsability that crushed his will and hope, turning him cynnical while keeping his madness we so love. I am not saying I like it, but I understand why they decided to make him like that. Even Omashu is not like the OG show, being more somber, especially if we consider the psychological war used by the Fire Nation to break the city from within.

    In the animated series Bumi tells Aang to find someone who waits and listens to be his earthbending teacher. He understands the significance of patience and waiting (he doesn’t fight back when Omashu gets taken over by Azula). Aang being away for 100 years and returning wouldn’t have left Bumi bitter, to him it was “perfect timing”. Just my own interpretation.

    • @nathanielreik6617
      @nathanielreik6617 4 місяці тому +3

      I don't think he would see it as perfect timing. That would mean that the perfect time is waiting until all the southern waterbenders have been either captured or killed and the Earth Kingdom is barely holding back the Fire Nation, and Sozin's comet is months away. I don't think Bumi would view that as "perfect timing", more of a "just in time".

Not to mention Toph being probably the strongest ally he has wouldn't have been born if Aang returned earlier. If he didn't freeze, he probably would've died too.
      If he came back later, then the earth kingdom will be demolished. Not to mention Zuko had to be in the position he was. I think in every aspect it was indeed perfect timing that he came back when he did. And I think Bumi knew that in a way.

  • @stephenbaines9750
    @stephenbaines9750 4 місяці тому +2

    The problem the writers are trying to negotiate is that real actors, when cast in an age appropriate manner, can't carry the original Katara and Aang story line. In the animation, you can gloss over age differences - Katara can seem like the mother and more mature than Sokka, Aang and Katara can be an item. That's the whole point of animation for kids - to make kids walk in their mothers and fathers shoes, to make them feel like grown ups.
    But in live action, with real actors for a more mature audience, that becomes harder to pull off. Aang looks like a kid. Katara is clearly way older than him. Kissing Katara would seem way weird, and borderline unbelievable at this stage. So much of this show is defined by that problem.
    The real question is why they kept this Secret Tunnels story line in the first season. In a second season with older actors, it might have worked with Aang and Katara, but the tension between Sokka and Katara is just not quite sufficient to support it as sibling reconciliation. It feel like they were trying to stuff as many Easter Eggs as they could in the first season to appease fans and get Netflix to pick up a second and third season. I kind of have the same feeling about leaves on the vine, though that was a touching sequence.
    I generally like the series, but don't get me started on Bumi.

  • @RunningTogether
    @RunningTogether 4 місяці тому +2

    I think the changes to Bumi were a misguided street to make the show more “realistic” and adult by showing that 100 years of war could be draining on people, and showing a darker, grittier side to things. But they changed Bumi to be depressed and cynical, which is absolutely the opposite of his personality in the original, and makes him in likable. Also, in the show he taught Aang to think outside the box (“like a mad genius”), but here Aang really earned nothing from Bumi, while Bumi learned that counting on friends could help with burdens from Aang… which took away Bumi’s wisdom as well. To me this is the worst change they made in the live action by far. Changing details of the plot or of minor characters is ok, but completely changing a major character like Bumi into someone who is no longer admirable or likable is a huge error.
    Still love your reactions as always, and this criticism isn’t meant to attack the show as a whole, which has some good points like some of the new details of Iroh and Zuko’s relationship from before the banishment.

      -For whatever reason they didn't have the nomads go into the tunnels, so Sokka couldn't calm the badgermoles with music. "Uuuhhh Katara can sense that the badgermoles read emotions!"
      -We want Bumi to do the rock candy bit, but Sokka and Katara aren't with Aang to be captured! "Just make it a booby trap Bumi will walk Aang into!" "But why would he do that?" "He's mad at Aang for not being there to help." "But what do rock candy booby traps have to do with that? Isn't that why they fight at the end?" "We have to do the rock candy bit!!!
      -Bumi says the "lettuce leaf" line, we should have him do more food puns! "Have him test whether Aang is still a vegetarian??" "But Aang can just airbend to prove he's himself!??"

      Bumi is berating LAang for not doing his job while distracting him from doing his job! Bumi only has a lesson for LAang in the last game AND IT'S WASN'T EVEN INTENTIONAL!! All of the yelling at LAang for not being the avatar doesn't make good drama, cause he's actively trying to be a good avatar! He's a dumb kid (the character, not the actor) who got caught in a storm flying too low to the ocean (because the plot needed him to get dunked in the water) and everyone is like, "You're a failure for running away! Stop avoiding being the avatar!!! >:(" and he's NOT!

    We have to remember that it is an ADAPTATION and that from the beginning we knew that there would be changes. When you stop to think what a hundred years of war can do to someone especially a king who as Bumi himself said had to make impossible choices every day, it makes sense the way they portrayed him here and he still has the spirit of bumi like in animation, the difference is that they are not sugar coding how war can affect people, even the purest ones, like Bumi

    I think, the original Bumi was perhaps too whimsical for a live action show, so his change makes sense to me, then the point of Katara and Sokka showing up just for the end was to have Aang being helped by his friends to make his own argument against Bumi's. But the siblings' arc in this episode felt a bit forced by the necessity to have them only show up at the end.

  • @rafaelmatos5851
    @rafaelmatos5851 4 місяці тому

    That scene between Iroh and the Earth Kingdom soldier was hard to watch... especially because it makes us remember that Iroh in the past was a general that brought many victories to the Fire Nation. People that only watch the show and don't take the chance to actually explore the characters outside of it, can never grasp the person Iroh was before losing his son. Despite never being cruel and disliking to hurt others, Iroh actually enjoyed war and had a lust for power and conquest, a side that was well balanced by his pleasant personality and infinite love for his family, especially his son and father. In fact, it took their deaths in a short period of time to make Iroh to lose all his darker traits and completely embrace the easygoing perspetive he now has.

    • @joshiesushi
      @joshiesushi 4 місяці тому

      That was so well said. That is also the reason why I didn't enjoy Iroh in this one specific scene. When the soldier confronted him, Iroh "made excuses" like: "I was a soldier. I was following orders. We were at war". I don't think Iroh would ever say that. At least not the Iroh we knew. At most he'd show sympathy or show regret, but never excuse his war mongering past. It doesn't help that they kind of slapped the funeral scene there to make us feel sympathy for the actual war criminal.
      I personally loved the funeral scene, but I don't like it being used in this particular scene. It was used to make us go "poor Iroh, he suffered just as much. He is so nice and we love him now", rather than appropriately showing his regret after the soldier's story.

      He now seems even MORE insane and senile, because he's scolding Aang for goofing off on his travels (which doesn't happen in this series. NATLA speed-runs the story way too quick), but then in the next scene, Bumi is playing games with Aang.
      Does he want Aang to meet his destiny or does he want him to goof off and be silly with him? His motivations just give such whiplash.

    I understand being taken aback by the changes they made to Bumi. I felt the same at first. But the more I thought about it.... Bumi is by far the most "cartoony" character in ATLA. And "cartoony" characters are difficult to do in live action. It can be done, but its difficult to get right. So I think they wanted to take a more grounded, realistic approach to Bumi... have him be a still eccentric but also grumpy old man who has fought in wars and become a little jaded. He's 112 after all. He's entitled to be a grump. They added something to him but still kept his core eccentric personality. And I think it plays off well by the end.

    Fleshing out Zuko and Iroh is probably the best thing the show has done. Other than that, the music really did most of the heavy lifting for me 😂 I don’t think the show really deserves the moments I think they were trying to build up to? Having a cynical Bumi could have really grounded the show since we miss out on the Gaangs adventures to different towns and see the effects the Fire Nation has had. Bumi reality checking Aang could have been impactful for both parties with Aang having to make choices and dealing with the consequences and a hardened Bumi being reminded that joy can cause inspiration for change…but they fumble it soooo bad. 🤣😭 I need some better writing cause Aang and Katara feel so one dimensional while they’re throwing so much on Sokkas character.

    Honestly, I think that Aang's actor might have been a tad little too young to kiss a 30 year old like Katara and that's why they went this whole brotherly love lol (or they straight up aren't even going to hook up Katara and Aang). I have always been a fan of zero relationships and getting to the point and to a person like me, this move is not that bad. But if they were going to do something like this to cave of two lovers, why not just not have it or have it be replaced by a newer and better plot. This episode was all over the place tbh.

    I think the problem with this show is that it does not have a good grasp with its target audience.
    *1. Who is their target audience, ATLA fans or new fans?* They are allowed to make new things and I liked a lot of the new things but they also go the opposite route for some things that fans know at heart which confuses us.
    *2. What age is their target audience?* Showing burning bodies already indicates they want a mature audience, yet they keep adding the mushy naive parts that only kids like. Add more hard-hitting scenes like that soldier. This is why we prefer Zuko's scenes in this show cause Aang's scenes are so plain and boring. Just constant guilt tripping a child and his friends come to save the day.

      As much as I appreciate the whimsical Bumi from the original, I can understand how Bumi could’ve become jaded during the 100 years of war, watching as the world he and Aang once knew slowly decaying and becoming as twisted as Fire Lord Sozin and Ozai. That being said, my problem isn’t with how Bumi is written and portrayed, but rather it’s with how this Bumi is interacting with this Aang. In the Netflix adaptation, Aang isn’t planning fun road stops on their trip to the North Pole or trying to have fun with his new friends like in the original, so Bumi’s chastising of Aang treating situations like a game doesn’t resonate as well because this version’s Aang is portrayed as more steadfast with his role as the Avatar, with a bit more angst, thus making the conflict tonally inconsistent.

    So, i haven't watched the series past the 4th episode, bc i think its getting worse and worse by every scene. Nothing makes sense. Im gonna list a few things here
    1st: The rock candy part in this episode. Like in the cartoon it made sense that Bumi said it was candy all along bc they almost suffocated bc of it, but here the directors were just like: "yeah that was in the original series, lets mention it", so its like another twist of the knife for us
    2nd: At the end of this episode, Bumi and Aang take a ride on a slide. It was never mentioned they were doing this (correct me if i missed that one out, this series is like a bad fever dream for me 😂)
    3rd: In the 3rd episode we can see the earth containers going up the slides... idk what happened, like the budget wasn't big enough to buy some gravity or what?
    4th: In this episode Katara and Sokka was in the secret tunnels with the love thing... weird
    5th: The monologues are just sooooo bad, its like watching a highschool performance
    6th:Katara is a good water bender when she thinks of her mom?
    Theres a lot more of these thing but in conclusion, i didn't think they would make this series as bad as the movie was, but these guys pulled it off
