The Rise and Fall of Nike Shox: What Happened?

- Nike Shox Technology was one of the most exciting reveals Nike has ever done in their history as a innovative sportswear brand. It was suppose to be the follow up to their legendary Air technology. In fact, the history of Nike Shox dates back all the way to 1984. Nike designers like Bruce Kilgore (designer for the AF1) worked on the design for Shox for nearly 14 years! In this video we take a closer look at the history of Nike Shox and why it ultimately failed to capture the market like Nike Air did.

I remember ppl used to always ask me if my shoes really made a boing sound
hahhaha
Lmao 😆 early 2000’s WHAT A TIME TO BE ALIVE.....Beginning stages of becoming a sneaker collector which later would be called a Sneakerhead.......High School Days....In the words of my Grandfather Time goes by faster than you think 🤔....R I P Grandpa Thanks 🙏 for getting my 1st pair of NameBrand Sneakers(No ABC store or Payless Sneakers) Adidas Shelltoe Superstar Pro Model White with three black stripe!
Should've replied, that's not the shoe 😂
I was one of those people back in high school lol
You had the replica my friend.original dont make boing sound.
Shox were, and still are, my favorite athletic shoe design of all time. I've always been interested in shock absorber tech in general, so these shoes instantly appealed to me. Plus, the R4 design is just beautiful. My first pair were "Blue Spark" colored, and received more compliments than any other garment I've ever worn. I mention that only because it suggested that the design aesthetic had mass appeal. Personally, I think they were just a little too edgy for mass adoption.
I would have killed to have a pair(bak then)
The thing I find is hilarious is how obsessed I was with Nike Air as a kid. As an adult I realize it’s just marketing BS. Literally selling an air pocket.
I work at a sneaker store, and older dudes still go NUTS over the fact that we sell Shox. They always tell me that at one point, they could bring quite a pretty penny on eBay. It brings a smile to my face that I can make their day when I sell a pair to them.
Haha Nostalgia is powerful and a big part of why we make videos. I’d say nostalgia drives 90% of my sneaker purchases 😂
I like them,im one of those that goes nuts....got 5 pairs of shox TL and 1 R4.... 😃🤪
I'm not a sneaker head but I'm on my second pair in about 5 years and I hope they keep getting sold because I'll keep buying them. My favorite sneaker!
I LOVE SHOX. At 40 years old, they were prescribed by my orthopedist to aid my mobility after meniscus issues in both knees. Without the shox, my knees would be done after 5 or 6 hours. Couldn't do my job. With the shox, I was able to complete my work day (12 hours), with strength and energy to spare. Shox changed my life and now I can't find them . I need a woman's size 6.5.
th i come from uk and they sell shox in sports direct which is where 40 yr old white guys buy sports shit
and u see so many older guys wearing them and youngers wearing air maxes
The "shocks" were hard as rocks.
Only on certain models some of them shox like on the r4 were soft af especially after being broke in.
Yeah I never thought they were comfortable
@@kamikazekid94 probably because you never had any
About like your brain.
Your tried the wrong pair, guy.
Heck yeah
I’m from the uk and they were really popular in the early 2000’s. Just because some people don’t like them don’t mean they weren’t dope.
I think the TLs’ are dope. From what I hear they’re still pretty popular in the UK? Here in the states they’re not
@@NachoAverageFinds I saw someone wearing them today, and they looked good. I myself had the NZ's years ago. They were comfortable, cool looking shoes.
I’ve got an original 2001 R4 Pair from Nike ID which I haven’t used in 15 years, still excellent condition, very rare I would say & still look dope, the original & paid a fortune at the time in September 2001 to get them shipped from Nike ID
I only owned one pair of Shox the black silver & blue XT's from back around 2003 but I *LOVED* those and have been trying to find another pair for 15 years....something about that shade of blue just popped
Man I had a hard time even finding good photos of the XT. They’re super rare now days.
I had those when they first came out... And really thought they would increase my vertical 🤣🤣🤣. Aesthetically I always thought the BB4s looked better though.
Had one too and they looked dope during that time.
Academy sporting goods have some
man my dad used to where these and my mind was just blown away, this video brought that nostalgic moment back, man you are really underrated.
Your dad was cool dude haha thanks Hafiz!
My sister bought me a pair of the Silver R4's from a Goodwill since I wear size 15 and can never find shoes in a store that big. They were the most comfortable shoes I've ever owned and lasted for a long time. I think one reason they were so comfortable for me was that the heel was higher than the toe (higher ratio than most shoes) and that took the pressure off the forefoot. LOVED them!
Aha!
I own two pair of Nike FLIGHT shox. White/blue and White/red both pair are in excellent ( Mint ) condition. I keep them both in their original boxes. Brought them from dicks sporting goods for $29.99 each back around 2005. I've seen them reselling for $120-$250 in similar condition. I'm not interested in selling either pair. I wore one of each to the Young Money Concert Tour, I think that was 2010/2011. I was given backstage VIP tickets from a friend. Lil Wayne walked pass me and pointed at them... nodded in approval... and that was when I knew I wasn't going to sell them, EVER!
Wowwwww haha Got the co sign for Lil Tunechi himself
You got something from Dicks that goes “boing-ing”?!
The resale value is not that high. Consider Jordans or my Kobe 9s that have a resale value anywhere from $550 - $700.
Great story
@@mariotovar2173 a year later and now you will eat your words. All shocks are 200+ rn
I had the first shox basketball shoes. I actually enjoyed them a lot. I want to buy them again.
BB4s 😎
This channel is pure gold. Thanks for sharing the history. Always feel good to know stories behind kicks. Awesome
Thank you Linnn! Appreciate the kind words 😎🙏
I remember going into my 8th year and playing ball and running in the same shoes all summer. I went to Walmart and bought white and black paint to make them look new. Then my Brother and Sister gifted me these as my parents were going thru hard times. Vince was my favorite player to watch, still remember til this day.
Your siblings are the best for gifting you these man. Thanks for watching G 💪
I remember I begged my parents to buy me the BB4’s when I was in the 6th grade. I remember thinking they were going to take my basketball skills to the next level. All my teammates were in awe when I showed up to the first practice rocking my new Nike Shox I was the only kid on the team with a pair. I scored 2 points that season in garbage time in a meaningless game, I never went out for the basketball team again
I drooled over these as a kid but never had enough money to buy them on my own. When I was 17 I bought a pair and they were my absolute favorite. I wore them so much the adhesive that attached the sole to the shox disintegrated. It was hard getting rid of them, I actually might have cried a little. They made me feel taller and faster like my feet were on little clouds. Breaks my heart they are $300 - $500 online now because I know I cant help myself, I will be rocking them again one day!
From Australia, I heard about Nike shox back in 2005 and was told that Ebay would be the best place to buy some. Got some TL3's and absolutely loved them. Nike's marketing of them was never good but they were so damn comfortable. Best sneaker I've ever had.
Been wearing them for twenty years I love them. I think they look better than the patchwork blobs out now. I still wear vintage adidas, Nike, puma's and Sacony's.
I had a pair and I think one of the reasons for it’s failure was because the soles were hard to clean and debris/gunk would get lodged in between the “springs”
Yeah I’ve heard about that issue as well
Exactly what I was thinking would happen!
Yep....but anyway you can get any long harden brush and make a cool clean inside your shoxes springs.....but if you walk around anywhere in the countryside place with loose sticks and bushes...that opened springs sole could get trapped into any wood stick or plastic or metallic spring around...but it's worth to take good care of your shoxes always....walk always on safe places....flat pavement....anywhere flat 'round the city....
I just want to say that you guys are one of my favorite youtubers out there and I love every single video you make! greetings from germany and please never stop making videos
Hey David, that is so appreciated man. Peace to the homies in Germany 🇩🇪 and no we will not stop making these videos 😏 sorry it takes so long to put them out haha
The BB4 was and still is one of the best shoes to hoop in. The front foot cushion is low to the ground and the traction is awesome too.
I'm one of those guys who still live the BB4. Priceless nostalgia.
Can you do history of the Jordan 11 please
Most def!
The most iconic Jordan of all time
I had one pair of silver Shocks and thet literally disintegrated it was a hyped up technology that never delivered
That's what I'm hearing from everyone in our FB group
@@NachoAverageFindsNike air technology is the ticket, the rest play second fiddle
Had a pair of BB4s and they lasted FOREVER. Wore them every day for 5 years.
I always thought that the Shox parts had actual springs inside of them. Makes me kinda sad learning that it’s basically a polyurethane bushing. Kids in elementary school had these and rebook “zigtech” (you should totally do an episode on them too) you were seen as cool if you had them, it was a placebo effect of jumping higher or something.
The Zigtech looks so wild on feet haha I need to try some of those
here in brazil the nike shox was the dopest thing when i was a child, good memories from the baile funk
Tênis feio da porra kkkkk
can you do history of air max 90 next?, loved the video btw
we'll do one of those in the future for sure
Nice vid. Brought back memories. Started with a BB4. Am using Turbo VI atm. TL not my thing, so glad to see original-designed R4s back.
Thanks man I appreciate the kind words! R4s are legendary
love these vids, most informational sneaker head content on youtube.
I'm flattered. Thank you!!
I always had great experience with my Shox, especially the R4+ with the zipped shroud were suuuuuper comfortable. Also the VC2 were awesome…
Couple of points people have called out. Impossible to clean the ‘undercarriage’. Definitely heavy. Style was a bit crazy especially in that era. And the 160+ price point was a deterrent. I had a bunch and loved them. If you were on your feet all day they were great. Definitely kept me from hurting while working though.
Nice Michael. Thanks for sharing that brotha! Appreciate you watching and hope you’re having a great day
I played two full seasons in them (Shox bb4, black with Shox in red) at the beginning of the 2000s. Best shoes I ever played basketball in. Still want a pair back...
Time to reload some BB4s 💪
I still love them and still wear them! Wish I could find a place to replace the rubber (soles). The leather is in great shape. That is the only downfall on these shox is the thickness of the rubber in the heel areas!
I think the year was 2003 when SHOX caught my eye . Always wanted the runners but the VC’s were the ones that caught my eye . I actually had 3 pair that I hooped in . I think if Nike would’ve reworked the technology or went the basketball route first it may have worked out better . If they EVER retro them somebody put me down for a pair or 2 ! The all black were my favorite, then it was the white with the red stitch and the white with the blue stitch !! Great shoe to hoop in , especially for me because I love high top basketball shoes! Great vlog episode.
It didnt fail it just faded when Vince Carter started fading but i bet if Nike bring back the Nike Shox VC line as a retro it'll revitalize the whole Nike Shox line.
Interesting. I hope they do retro the VC line soon. Thanks for watching man!
@@NachoAverageFinds 💯 bro and I know nike gotta retro his line and give him a hybrid sneaker also that would really be awesome
Back in the 2000's when i worked on the ramp for an airline we were allowed to wear regular gym shoes during the summer as long as the were all black and just about everybody wore Shox. I still have a pair of NZ's
That’s hella fly haha no pun intended.
14 year old fan from Romania. I like your content a lot.
Really appreciate bro! Peace to Romania
@@NachoAverageFinds thank's Man.
Shoutout to my Romanian bois
Love these retrospects. Keep them coming! The editing is so great on them too.
Thank you so much for the kind words. Got some more content on the way!
Your documentary’s are fantastic and so well presented. Congratulations on all your efforts
Hey Asad, thank you so much for the kind words brother
As a poor college kid back then, I worked my socks off earning pocket money to buy a pair of R4 as my first pair of Nike top of the line runners.
Ran with it and ended up injured myself pretty bad. Still remember the doctor told me the shoes were not suitable for actual running due to the excessively tall heel and unstable design which caused my injury.
I swore not to wear any Nike running shoes until 8 years later when they came out with Nike Lunar Trainer.
Wow. That’s crazy. Haha you should have wrote Nike a letter tell them this.
I remember back in 2000, I was in going to 6th grade and seeing commercials for this thing, and wanted it so badly. They were too cost-prohibitive for the back-to-school shopping budget, so I got Reebok Pumps instead. Looking back, both choices are seen now as a “shoe tech fail”
Got a pair of Shox TL a week ago and I love them, real comfy and I also like the looks lol.
Same got couple pairs recently.
Top Tier
Had the R4 as a kid (thinking it was the Vince Carter shoe...I didn’t know better) and i played in them so hard that the springs from the absorber started breaking through the heel.
Hahahah Damn.
You kinda missed the larger culture following it had (and still has) in Brazil, way larger than England's (i'm serious)), great video and great shoe.
Yeah man haha I’m getting a lot of comments about Brazil. I’m fascinated by it and want to do a big video on sneaker culture in Brazil. Thanks for watching!!
Your videos are fantastic guys. Really informative and thorough, atleast to me
Thank you man! Much appreciated!
I have a pair of the TL's and they're comfy and bouncy af. I love them. plus they look wayyy better than the og ones
I agree
I remember a tons of other kids has these when I was in grade school. I totally forgot about them! Great video
I still have some pairs and love my shocks always have !
Nice! I want some Shox TL
I Love Shox..!!! Been sporting them since they came out and still do... just bought some shox like 2 months ago. Dope Shoe in my opinion!!!
I remember when Shox debuted in 2000, I was 17 on my first job. I thought they were cool but not $160 cool.
Haha yeahhhh a hefty price tag for the 2000s
Yep I definitely subbed. I'm a shoe fanatic and I love the style of these videos....it's like shoe documentary.....love it.....
Nike shox here in Brazil is one of, if not the most influential and important shoes for young people of the 2000s!
I am 20 years old and since I remember Shox is a desired shoe mainly in blocks where those who were usually either playboy or were trafficking hahaha
Haha I’m going to make a video about Brazil’s sneaker culture. Thanks for watching!!
@@NachoAverageFinds waiting for this!!!
Man Brain & Nacho ! Love your work 💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼 keep it up 💯
Thank you Viktor!!
I've had several pairs of Shox . When I first saw them I thought "I'll break my ankle in those" They turned out to be the most stable shoes I've ever had. I wore them (the same pair) for at least 3 years everyday I wore the bottoms out while the body of the shoe looked brand new. These Shox have been the most durable shoes I've ever owned.
Which model of a Shoxs did you own? I’m considering getting a pair of Shox TLs
@@NachoAverageFinds 501524-091
I actually got a pair of shox tl(AV3595-005) aswell recently, and durability is my uncertainty with them since the gum bottoms seem to be thinning out over time, but if i get 2 years out of them i'll be pretty happy with the purchase.
@@tachkazor96, Gum soles are susceptible to increased wear over traditional rubber soles.
Brian can you please do a video about 70's famous basketball shoes as to why they look similar by design. Shoes like Nike Dunk/AF1/AJ1, Adidas' Forum/Top10/Rivalry, Converse Weapon and Puma Clyde. I have been wondering about it
That’s a great idea man. I’ll add it to the list. Thank you so much for watching
I wore the BB4’s and a few other shox to play basketball. I LOVED THEM!! I thought they were supportive and provided great cushioning. I never cared for how the running shox looked but they were great to hoop in. The BB4 is in my top 10 shoes to play in.
i currently have the black R4's , trey are pretty comfortable, and they keep your foot in a healthy position
Bought the R4 in London when they first got released at the beginning of the millennium. They weren’t cheap, I wouldn’t play basketball in them but they were great shoes. Very futuristic looking and conversation starters. I’d definitely buy them again today.
As for some of these so-called sneakerheads, they’re starting to make me question a lot about them. Probably a bunch of resellers acting as sneakerheads. We wore everything from the OG Fila, Jordans and even the original Uptempos, never heard of anyone back then who didn’t wear their shoes because of resale value. Unheard of unless you were some nerd trying to make money off real sneakerheads. Some of the tastes with today’s lot are questionable.
Always a good day when a sneaker history video is posted
Thank you Rhett!
Here in Brazil the Nike shox still a big thing. Sold out everytime they launch a new model. I don't know why because the shoe doesn't have a very good design and isn't confortable, but people love the shoe , specially in the hoods here, where everybody wears shox, or Mizuno prophecy.
I thought these were some of the best hooping shoes ever made! I had the white and silver BB4s in 2001 and I have all the retro bb4s now. Great video, subscribed
Thank you for the comment man. BB4s are epic for hooping. Appreciate the love 💪
Nike Shox Leathal and Bombers. Those were the days in middle school.
Middle school was the best for kicks lol
Im from the UK and these we’re big when they were first released! Loving the vids, keep them coming 🤙🏾💯
I think they'll make a comeback. They are growing on people again i think
Perry I think so too. Especially the TL
I sure hope the nike shox bomber make a return
I love my Shox. Been rockin' them for a while now
I've owned over 10 pairs of the Nike Shoxs and loved everyone of them.
Each pair always lasted me 2 to 3 years. Now that only a few of them are around new for sale it suxs because I don't have the options of new ones, and I really don't like anything since that Nike or any other brand of shoe has come out with.
Now I've only been wearing boots because of it.
Boost is not a bad go to shoe lol I could wear it the rest of my life so I know what you mean
I had two pair of Shox...one pair being the Vince Carter's...I loved them.
VC is a legend! Thanks for watching man
I think the Nike shox are the most comfortable sneakers. They maybe be heavier but more comfy than Vapomax or Airmax ones. If Nike released new Shox designs instead of old ones, I would buy them.
They released some new ones in 2018 with the Shox Gravity. Check em out!
1980: we'll have flying cars in the future
2000: we have shoes that will make you go boing!
Great video as always guys!! I had a suggestion. How about you'll make a video on Adidas Springblade??
I had the TL’s back in the day, I remember going to Brazil back in 2003 and seeing them in the sports shops behind protective glass because the hoods would target then like fine jewellery 😂
Man I was expecting a deep analysis on why they failed, not a Facebook group lmao wtf
My bad G
my first ever basket ball sneakers that i used back in the day for playing competitive middle school basketball was nike shox vince carter 2. loved that shoe
Never had a pair of those kicks. I might consider buying one if I need to but if it will just be an additional shoe on my collection, nah. Nvm.
Hahah
I had a pair back when I was a little homeschool kid who didn't know anything about fashion or sneakers. I loved them, they were a dark blue gray and I wore them everywhere. I would definitely wear them again if I could find a pair.
I like the shox nz they're the best looking. Plus they're making a resurgence in Australia
Man, i had some of best times hooping in my Shox Elevate back in summer 2005, was living in Shanghai at that time, the basketball court was right behind the JingAn Temple, so the monks would come and ball out with us, and they were rocking J's lol
My dad at one time had a pair lmao 😂
Haha Your dad had style
I had the Nike Shox lethal zoom back in like 06-07... as comfortable as they were around the foot, it gave me numerous shin splints
Ahhh shin splits are the worst!
In the Uk they’re having a resurgence, seeing a lot of artsy girls wearing them 😂
Hahaha sounds about right. Over here girls wear the Fila Disruptors
NachoAverageFinds ahaha I know the type
@@NachoAverageFinds a lot of girls in London were wearing disruptors too starting around 2 years ago haha

Shox were crap. They were the most uncomfortable shoes. Felt like I was walking on concrete
Haha Some people either love them or hate em
Both my silver/black boots and my silver/blue lows, the shock part came unglued.
Trying to find a strong enough glue to stick them back.
Any recommendations?

In the early 2000s, I saw so many people play ball in Nike Shox BB4s. I never really went for them, myself, but I saw the appeal. God, how cool was that Celebrity Deathmatch ad back then?
Nike shox were the worst thing to ever hit the stores. They're ugly!
Visionaire TV nah man, they were cool at the time, especially the VC ones and the slim Nike shoe runners just like ultraboost now or used to be because ultraboost start to look shit as well and we’ll be looking at them like at shox
Then you weren't alive in the 2000s
This is coming from an aussie... do you think you could try do some asics history. In particular gel quantums or kayanos etc.
Yeah brotha for sure. I love the Gel Kayano series actually. They have a great story behind them. Definitely going to do a video on them in the future
I owned a pair in high school. I don’t remember how I got them, but I remember people asking about them when I wore them to school. Nostalgia at its finest
mine were a sleek b&w basketball version, really comfortable both on and off the court, I rocked them for many years
I was 15 and landed a job at Footlocker. During the holidays we got 10 vouchers to get 50% off. I got 2 pair of the Silver R4.
Best Nike I've ever had, and I'm an AirMax 90 freak.
Reminds me of school days .. only the connected wore Shox to school .. and the whole crew had em on .. those were the days
Haha The good old days man
I still remember when my Mom got me the Shox XT in the OG colorway. Still one of my favorite kicks I ever owned to this day.
banger! absolute banger brian!🔥
Thank you Dennis!!
I still have a pair of grey NZ’s. Literally the last pair I could find in Cape Town and as soon as I put it I fell in love with them. Felt like I was walking on a cloud cos they hug your feed so good. That was 4 years ago and they still look only a few weeks only
That’s amazing man. Am glad you were able to get the perfect pair for yourself 🙏🙏
I remember I got to try out a prototype of the Shox running shoes back in fall of 1992. At that time the rubber they used was too stiff to get the benefit of the shox. If you cut it away, they had a lot more cushion but really unstable.
The person that had them wouldn't let me take them to the cross country race to show off unfortunately. I was surprised that they didn't hit the market for another 8 years.
I had a pair of Shox for running around 2005. It was when I first started running. They were probably the best shoes for starting out with my running form. Once I was experienced I switched to Asics. Still miss those Shox though.
I loved my Nike Shox VC 2 and the Shox NZ that had a brown leather look to them. They were the first shoes that weren't on discount that I was allowed to buy.
I think these videos are incredible! I know it's probably not going to appeal to a massive audience but it would be cool to have content about stuff like the Adidas Micropacer - I was either a baby / not born yet while Air Max were taking over so I have no idea that things like the Adidas Micropacer existed -fascinating.
For sure!!! Thank you so much for the kind words. Maybe we’ll do a video on early sneaker technologies. And throw the micro pacer in there
I had a pair when early 2000's, actually BB4 is comfy but the weak is those boing materials are easy to brittle and when that happen easy to broken and you can't fix it anymore, even you can't re glue.
BB4s are one of my favorites but I agree they don’t last long

They had a cross trainer shock that released with the runner and basketball shoe too. They were the best looking of the three and sold out the most back then I had trouble finding them in my size.
