- Hi i'm Beau Young 2 x world champion longboarder and I'm here to teach you how to paddle and to pop up on a surfboard!
Now before we begin there are three things I want you to pay particular attention to. The first, getting to your feet in one smooth motion. Second your foot positioning and finally your stance!
Now with this in mind let's begin.
the best place to start is on the sand
place your board on the sand digging out a hollow for your fins
begin by laying on the back 3/4 of your board typically with your toes overhanging the tails end
practice paddling your board by reaching out in front one arm at a time fingers slightly apart and arms also slightly bent it is important to not overreach and keep your head facing the horizon for increased balance and also to reduce fatigue and now we're going to practice the pop-up similar to a push-up we place our hands shoulder width apart close to the board's edge keeping your body low ending your knees kicking your feet up towards your chest in one swift movement and taking position with your leading foot, once stable
let go of the board's edge to complete your surf stance your surf stance should be low with knees bent shoulder width apart with your hands out to your sides standing with your leading shoulder pointing in the direction you want to travel
left-handers also known as goofy footers typically lead with their right foot forward right-handers known as natural footers typically lead with their left foot forward but ultimately when you jump up lead with what foot feels most comfortable for you practice these movements a multitude of times before heading out into the ocean once you feel comfortable it's time to head out into the water and practice those paddle skills we suggest starting out in the shallows in waist to chest deep water where the waves have already broken and a called whitewash you can start by simply walking out finding an area that is comfortable for you laying on your board heading to the shore and beginning to paddle for a wave begin your paddle with at least 10 meters head start to gain speed and forward momentum before the wave reaches you typically you will take a few extra strokes then you anticipate to ensure that you catch the wave at first it can be a good idea to catch the wave on your stomach to get used to the speed and feeling of surfing
now that you have caught your first wave when you feel comfortable head back out and prepare yourself for another wave this time with the mindset of getting to your feet when you're ready begin your paddle with a ten meter head start of the wave to gain speed and forward momentum before this wave catches you remember to take a fe w extra strokes once the wave has grabbed you and you feel the acceleration from the wave begin to stand up keeping your body low bend your knees and kick your feet up towards your chest in one swift movement taking position with your leading foot once stable let go of the board's edge to complete your surf stance if you feel up to it ad allow past the breaking waves and catch an unbroken green wave in the same fashion to progress with your surfing ability repeat these steps for each and every wave until you have mastered your paddle and pop up skills and remember to tune in to our next episode for more helpful tips and tricks!
