I've surfed for around 8 years, and in when I was in my beginner phase I trawled the entire internet for a decent pop up video without much success. I can honestly say this is the best and most comprehensive tutorial I've ever seen, and very useful even now as an intermediate to improve my technique. Thank you so much Ruby 🥰
Ok 👍🏻 a minute 30 into this with the sweet music, clean glass conditions and clear nice voice explaining each of the 100% correct technique options, that’s it I’m going surfing! Awesome vid 😎 thanks!
I wish I had watched this when I first transitioned from a longboard to a fish! I quickly realized how dependent I had become on the knee technique, and how hard of a habit that is to break. Now that I've mastered the thigh/shortboard popup, I'll never go back. This was an excellent and informative video. Thanks Ruby!
Ruby! I'm so happy I found your video. The back foot pop up is a game-changer for me. I'm tall with long legs and I struggle to get my front foot far enough forward in my Pop-up. Your back foot Pop-up technique allows me to leverage the strength of my back leg to get me just enough time to get more upright and get my front foot in a better position. Thank you!
I agree with everyone else who says this a very helpful video. Your observation that the back foot popup creates a wider stance than the thigh popup exactly matches my experience (I'm a perpetual beginner). I still prefer the thigh popup because it's quicker and feels more rhythmic, but the back foot popup places my front foot farther forward on the board. Putting more weight forward helps me avoid stalling out on waves, which is a chronic problem I have. So I'm always a bit torn between the two, but I think sticking with the thigh popup will pay off in the long run.
Exactly what I was looking for. Especially for us tall guys (me: 1,91 m) the boards easily get to short with you feed hanging in the water. I will try out your suggested techniques. Thank you!
Thank you for this video! I have been surfing for 47 years. I started on a short board and use the standard pop up from the thighs technique. 20 years ago I started riding longboards as well. And what has happened is performing the pop up from the thighs over the years I have trauma on my rear foot big toe from banging it on the longboard. Something that didn’t happen on a short board. So I am going to try the from the toes and rear foot technique to see if that works better for me. This will take a little work because the technique I use now comes automatic without thought. Thanks again!
Hi Ruby, Just started surfing and this is the best! I have has three different instructors and none covered these techniques. Very helpful and great job.
I recently started surfing and saw your video just before going out today and I definitely felt the difference using the back leg pop up. I was trying to do the short board pop up before seeing the video and as you said it was difficult. Thank you so much for making this video hopefully I perfect it soon.
Thanks! Trying to get back into surfing after more than 25 years and this was really helpful! I learned to surf as a 7 year old, and never rode a board longer than 5'10", so popping up was instinctual until I had to stop because of moving from Carlsbad CA to Washington DC. Now it's like starting over. Being 56 and somewhat out of shape doesn't help. Anyway, thanks so much, will try all of them to see which feels easiest to get me standing again :)
This video was very helpful for me as I got into a habit of using the knees pop up , than I got to steeper waves and I kept falling off but when U watched this video I kept practicing the shortboard technique and now I'm able to not fall of as much. Thanks to made this video it really helped.😀
Thank you very much. I watch a lot of how to surf videos and have bin working on my “pop up”. Everyone kind of has a different way of explaining things. For me the way you explained this really made it click. Thank you again all the way from Houston TX!
Hey Ruby ! I've been surfing for three years but I still need to improve my pop up. Your video is the perfect answer to all my questions. I might watch it again and again ! Big hug from France.
I’m just now learning how to surf with my youngest who’s 15..now that I live on the beach ..I will have to strengthen my core ..I’m now 42 😂but however in my defense we just moved back year ..used to live here decades ago..so glad to be back buuut I didn’t get to them ..I’m not trying to be a professional surfer just want to learn to have fun because my youngest loves me everything to do with the ocean .
Great video, a lot of information here and very concisely laid out. If you watch pro surfers pop up in slow motion they seem to be a mixed bag of “short board” spring up and back foot or chicken wing pop up. Seems to depend on height, weight ,type of board, etc. They are so fast and fluid that even when they go back foot/front foot it looks like both feet together. I seem to do a mixture of the two myself depending on length of board I’m riding (and how my fitness is going now I’m 61 and don’t spring up a s well as I did !) Big thumbs up for this presentation!,
I admire your skills at 61 years of age. Am 54 and finding it difficult to pop up on a performance shortboard after a 6 year hiatus. I would disagree with your assessment that professional shortboarding surfers ever use the chicken wing/ back leg. Great video for helping others with the pop up
Wow. Big ticks from me. This is a great video. The advice is spot on, the different angles were great, and the surfing footage I could watch all day! Unreal vid. Subbed.
An older woman, I have decided to learn to surf and have a chance in the next month or so. This is a very helpful video--and quiet relaxed. A nice change from all of the 'bravado' based surfing instruction content. Thanks,
Note: the back foot has the advantage that it allows you to rotate your hips thus making it easier to put your legs in under you to stay more compact and stable. Especially on backside waves this can be good in combination with your hands being not leveled up on the front of your board. By rotation of the hips and shoulders a bit earlier you can set up your turn a bit sooner, helpful for intermediates who have a hard time turning soon enough on steep backside waves.
Beautifully done! Thanks, this will help me show my surf students the above view. We're not allowed to fly drones on our island so this is a great additional perspective.
Yo this video is awesome! Specially for a noob like me, the slow motions are really helpful! Hope you make more videos like paddling techniques and stuff... Thanks!
Great tutorial. Very informative. I'm very much a beginner (even though I took surfing lessons years ago.) One thing I really struggled with during those lessons was popping up quickly in one single movement. Often, I would fall off! This is despite my experience with other board riding activities like skateboarding and sandboarding. I'm currently in possession of a short board and I want to try surfing again. And this time around, I'm going to forget about trying to pop up quickly (in one movement) on a short board. For a beginner, that's pretty much 'mission impossible.' I was considering using the knee method. But then I saw your back foot technique in this video and that was a real eye opener. I have never come across this one before. I'm definitely going to try it out as that looks ideal. I'll try it slowly at first. I admit that the knee method has too many steps involved.
I'm typically a long boarder who started off with the toe pop up but found myself naturally using the thigh pop up as I got stronger without thinking about it. However, recently, when trying to get back into the short board for variation, I'm finding it hard to transfer the skill. Probably a stability thing but will try the backfoot first thing.
Great video. Not sure if the thigh pop up is not just a quicker or one motion movement of the back foot pop up. There’s another great video of wsl pop ups at the surf ranch. Kelly seems to be the only one to move both feet at the same time like magic
Oh my god this is the best video, and so helpful. Used the tips from this video and one of ur other videos on how to stop using the knees. And today was the first day I didn’t use my knees to pop up! Thank u thank u thank u!!!! Sharing with all my girlfriends!
Normal for 99% of the time I read it or hear it I don’t say or type a word. Just go on. For some reason perhaps it being 5:30 and just waking sipping my morning jo, I will say that when I see or hear it, so often it seems, my mood becomes a bit dampened with a feeling of sorrow to again encounter it, and get a little disheartened. The one who created gravity, and the infinite span of energy waves both great and small. (some of which we ride upon!) The one who took less than 1 trillionth the mass of this planet and formed the 7 billion humans we share it with. Our God, our Creator I do know is 100% real. I tell you I had a profound experience 12 years ago and it changed my life. Blessed are those who believe but have not seen. Please believe. Yes there is a Lord Jesus Christ our savior and yes there is evil and the opposing forces they are doing battle on this planet as we speak. Battle for souls. The most widely reproduced book on this earth is the Bible and in it Exodus 20 states among 9 other basic guides for living is the one reminder to be reverent when speaking of our Creator. You are very deeply loved just as a newborn perfect child by your Lord. Have nice days.
I learned the longboard pop-up technique first, then quickly learned to do the thigh pop-up. Then I found myself naturally started doing the third technique with knee pointed to the side because I guess it’s the easiest (don’t need to spend time finding the board with your toes, nor the enormous abs strength of the thigh pop-up). I found that I actually lose quite some speed with this third technique, especially on a smaller board, because of the flared out knee, it creates more resistance. I wonder if you’ve observed the same. I’m switching back to thigh pop-up.
I was taught back foot front foot as a beginner... I'm now nearing intermediate stage and it's the only pop up I use ... But I've got it so drilled that it more or less is as good as the all in one pop up
Thanks for the great tutorial video! I very often happen to drag my knees over the board (and wax and Sand mixture) when doing/trying to do the shortboard pop up and thus constantly scrape my kneecaps. Any advice in how to fix that would be much appreciated!
New to the scene been so hard to find a good technique I can practice with, this is what I've been looking for! Keen to get in the water and practice and hope soon catch some waves
Ruby this is the best pop up video on the internet. You're the only person on UA-cam to have clearly elucidated the thigh pop up - which is what pros use on shortboards. It's kind of a shame that more surf instructors aren't teaching this. Also, how the hell did you get this footage? Did you use a drone?
Taha Nasser thanks so much for your kind words. Yeah I don’t know why people don’t talk about popping from the thighs?! Yes this footage is from a drone, pretty cool hey!
Slowly I am getting the drop by popping explosive at once on the longboard. your video helped a lot. I'm sorry for my english. Brazil, RJ, Saquarema. Thanks!
To be perfectly honest everyone has there own style/technique. Whatever anyone says you just can't beat two feet landing perfectly in sink on the board at the same time. Sometimes the back foot will be slightly there first but timing and wave type will dictate that as well. If your learning , always good to practice pop up's. Picking the right wave to catch is probably one of the most overlooked topics when teaching learners.
Hi Ruby! I was wondering if you could do a video on all the basics of surfing! I am trying to learn to surf but surf classes are a bit too expensive! If you could maybe do a series teaching us to surf it will be super cool! Thanks!
Any tips I wonder on pop up for 'mature age' surfers with a lot less flexibility than Ruby for surfers getting back into surfing after long breaks away from it, surfing a mal on small days? Great video!!
Thanks ,very helpful.Been surfing most of my life but with age and reduced flexibility have to reassess my pop up.Going to try to the pushing off the back leg( chicken wing) .Raglan, isn’t that an excellent left hander?....Cheers
I am so glad i found this video!! That knee technique is how i learned and have been doing for about a year now and find that i cant get up on a smaller board with it or a steeper wave. i have been trying to break the habit for a few months now but im struggling. when im on the wave my body auto magically does the knee thing. i am also extremely inflexible. like i cant put my hands on the board with my feet on it. maybe thats why i kneel? do you have any help for someone who is this inflexible ?
Stretch your hips it’s lower body inflexibility, if you have upper body strength then you have no excuse. Use the back foot first technique but bend your leg the one that you plant your knee down or your back foot in your crouched position. So that you are forced to use the toe to lift your back leg to plant it first and not your knee. That’s how I broke my habit
@@Hanhandoesthecancan yeah i am definitely very inflexible. like i can't even touch my toes haha. forget bringing my feet to the board with my hands still on it, it would never happen. how do you even stretch your hips tho?
Hi Ruby. I noticed that your push is below the chest. Is it better ? Why ? I m working your series Follow Along Workout for Fast & Powerful Pop Ups. TY
Great tips! I use the back foot technique. If you ever want to surf in Guarujá (Adriano de Souza's homeland; best waves breaks in the winter here) you are more than welcome to stay at my place. God bless.
First of all, awesome video. I will definitely use it in the future to improve my pop-up technique! However, as a rather beginner surfer I have two questions. Lately I've been trying to perfect the shortboard technique with the thighs but I always end up pushing with the knees themselves and at 1:25 it also appears that you have your knees on the board. Are you actually pushing with them before popping your legs forward? And my second question, I'm a pretty tall guy (6.4ft / 1.95m) and am pretty sure that my knees would not have the best support on a shortboard given its dimensions. Would it be more practical for me to master the "chicken wing" technique?
The contact points are the knees. Very athletic, experienced, agile people can pop up starting with their arms fully extended. You see this when surfers have already caught the wave but are waiting fur it to become more critical before they get up. With regards to height, you just need to use a board that is appropriate for your skill level. Once you are good enough, you can move down to a shorter board. I would recommend trying to master the pop up instead of the chicken wing technique if you can.
Hi Ruby, thank you! Although I don't doubt your thighs are more involved in the short board popup than the long board popup. In the end of the frames at 1:25, where you are demonstrating the short board popup. You can see, your toes touch the board. No big deal, but would love to see you do this on a shorter board, where they could not touch because they were hanging past the tail of the board, where they couldn't. At any rate, thank you!
Hi Ruby, thanks for this beautiful video! Question: I surf on a spot with super steep waves with a 9" softtop and the back foot technique. When the waves become super steep my board nosedives before I can stand up. Will it be helpful for me to try to master the long board technique e.g. is it quicker? Thanks!
Nope, the pop up wont have an influence, I would suggest either moving to a shorter board - foamies aren't meant to steep pitching waves, oooorr paddle into the wave much earlier and stand up just as you feel the lift :)
I've surfed for around 8 years, and in when I was in my beginner phase I trawled the entire internet for a decent pop up video without much success. Great video for helping others with the pop up
i wish there was a spot with waves like that near my place, my local spot is really messy with really weird steep waves :(
Me too, your break sounds like mine, 3 or 4 short period swells on the beach.
This is the problem with most tutorials. It's really hard to pop up with 50kg on a 70 liter board in perfect slow 3ft waves...
Looks like Maine/New Hampshire
Wow. Big ticks from me. This is a great video. The advice is spot on, the different angles were great, and the surfing footage I could watch all day! Unreal vid. Subbed.
Wow thank you :) I hope it helps!

Kim Perry yes flying drones is tricky, the locals here hate it so I have to wait until I can finally find a spot to myself which is rare
it is so helpful for me as a beginner . thank you so much

Great video. Im learning and started doing the 3rd technique because I bought a back foot grip and that technique suits it. Cheers

Great video. Not sure if the thigh pop up is not just a quicker or one motion movement of the back foot pop up.

That knee technique is how i learned and have been doing for about a year now and find that i cant get up on a smaller board with it or a steeper wave. i have been trying to break the habit for a few months now but im struggling. when im on the wave my body auto magically does the knee thing. i am also extremely inflexible. like i cant put my hands on the board with my feet on it. maybe thats why i kneel? do you have any help for someone who is this inflexible ?
danextreme, look up, head, chest, eyes up.
Same problem. Can't break it either. Been doing it for years.
its so frustrating! and i can do it on the ground but once im in the water its like my knee just automatically goes down lmao@@shanghaimuts
@@Hanhandoesthecancan yeah i am definitely very inflexible. like i can't even touch my toes haha. forget bringing my feet to the board with my hands still on it, it would never happen. how do you even stretch your hips tho?
i use a hybrid of short board during the popping phase but the walk up after the pop, back foot lands first.
God bless.
Forgot: Tatiana Weston-Webb lives here too.
does waves look so great with the colors
Everything seems so easy with such waves... 😉 great tutorial and nice girl. What else ?
THank you. THis is helpful.
I have always used the third one with the back leg first then the front
OneDayCloserToHim Hey! If you look super close they brush the board however no weight is transferred off the toes :)
@@RubyMeade Hi Ruby, thank you for the reply!
THANK YOU!!
Which pop up should I do on my 7'9?
which ever you want!
I'm jonesing for small clean surf. My homebreak got covered in lava 2 years ago :(
thank you so much
Back foot pop up, thank you..
With the shortboard pop up can you go from the knees?
JupyJones yep you can pop from the knees :)
@@RubyMeade thanks.
