1938, my grandma was 9 years old. This was actually the first year she went to the Indianapolis 500. She ended up going every year for a long time. Her father and her husband were both huge racing fans.

@@madmanmuntzjr that would be awesome I only know so much about him and would love to learn more. I do know that he was considered by so many in the racing industry to be the greatest driver there was and that he was killed before he got to really prove it

Yeah he was my dad's best friend he was killed in a midget race he and another guy were leaving the pack it was sort of like one of those races they did for benefits he was leaving the pack he tip Dover and somebody ran over his neck a devastated my dad for years they used to go on road trips together all the time pulling the midgets that my dad owned and Jimmy of course would drive the midgets On the old wood tracks dad We're always impressed for the fact that Jimmy was probably the best driver he ever knew he tells me stories one time on an interstate that was like 80 cars all jammed up and Jimmy running about 80 miles an hour took the right shoulder and ran all the way up to the front of the pack with the race car on the back and didn't even blink.

@@madmanmuntzjr yes I do know he was killed in the midget car race about a month after he placed 2nd in the ‘39 Indy 500 he was definitely born to drive probably why I never feel more at peace than when I’m behind the wheel of a car

Floyd Roberts won in 1938. Wilbur Shaw won in 1937, 1939 and 1940.

Muntz was right the FIRST time. That WAS a Duesenberg, Ab Jenkins' famous Mormon Meteor, not an Auburn Speedster.
