I have this rod in 1 piece UL 6’ and it’s absolutely my favorite rod. Caught everything from dinks to 6lb peacock bass on it. Very sensitive and cast great. Only minor complaint is with the micro guides. I do get line wrapping on the tip if not diligent. Waiting for the day when I forget and decent fish breaks it off. Overall a great multi species rod for my purposes down here in South Florida.
I think if I would have got the 6' model, I would have liked the rod more. I have a feeling it is a bit less whippy than this one so it would probably fit my style better. Regardless, there is no doubt in my mind this is a nice rod. I will definitely be fishing it more in the future!
Im glad you said "Bass sitting in 2 inches of water" because I just caught my biggest Largemouth out of Lake Mead this past friday on the 1/16th black mule jig with the Spark Shad in what seemed like 2 inches of water. Later on, caught my biggest bluegill on that setup too. Mule Jigs haul the chunks 🤘
I have the same rod but in their ultralight trout series. I have used that rod for years and have landed some of my biggest trout and my largest walleye, whitefish and sauger. I love it to death.
I love my panfish series rods. If you’re serious about bluegill, perch, crappie, white bass, etc those rods allow you to really fine tune specific techniques like a champ.
I have that same rod. It permanently resides at my fishing buddies house. He borrowed it once 2-3 years ago and I haven’t felt like asking for it back. I agree with your assessment, not a bad ultralight just not my favorite.
I think you and I have pretty similar preferences in how our gear balances in our hand. You seem to gravitate towards longer rods than I do but all in all, I think we have similar preferences. It is all about personal preference at the end of the day. I don't think this is a bad rod - I just think it has a different feel than I personally like. I will keep fishing it and maybe I will learn to appreciate a tip heavy rod. Who knows!
Good timing. I broke my old (2012) St. Croix Avid a few weeks ago. A very sad moment. But lifetime warranty baby! I was asked to call St. Croix tomorrow to discuss replacement options. A nice little discount on a new rod would work for me. I'm considering the Legend Elite Panfish or the Avid ultra light. I also have the Legend Tournament Bass casting rod. Maybe St. Croix is an acquired taste but I always liked how they both felt and not a lot of experience to compare it with others.
Sorry for your old rod... But have fun with the new stick when you get one :) And yeah I respect the heck out of St. Croix and definitely think they make a good rod, however it simply isn't the feel I prefer in a rod. Nothing wrong with that - just personal preference!
i just got the 7' 3" with the spilt butt and the balance is incredible with a 500 or 30 series reel. the one you have is very unbalanced due to the cork weight. Great video bro!
Your description of this rod's feel and characteristics seems close to the Okuma Celilo that you also reviewed. The St. Croix is a beautiful rod, add maybe one I will consider if I decide to stay with ultralight long-term. Your random musings ( "...how did I feel THAT bite?") spoke volumes about the sensitivity of the St. Croix. Thanks for a great video.
St. Croix definitely makes a nice product! I totally agree that this is a similar rod to the Celilo but just a nicer piece of equipment. The balance isn't for me but that is just personal preference!
I bought the TFO panfish and trout rod this year. Mine is a 6'6" UL-fast. It's under $100 and I like it better than the dobyns and st. Croix panfish rods. From your explanation in this video I think you would like it.
Captain Rylen I have both panfish and trout series, and yes to me they are also tip heavy..good rods.........But If you want fun of the chart, Major Craft FAX 63 super ultra light ( an area trout rod)....Daiwa Iprimi extra extra ultra light is also a fun rod to have.....Both are lower end of jdm great rods..Great starting for jdm...
Hey bud, everything you’re explaining about what you’d like in this model is in the 7’ Light Fast rod. I have had it for years and I was shocked when I went to the Light action how much more I liked this series of rod by St Croix.
Really? Well shoot maybe I need to order another rod XD But for real, I definitely understand that the rods can vary significantly by model. That is the one thing I wish I could account for in these videos but I simply can't justify buying numerous models of each rod lol my wife already questions me enough for all these dang ultralights!
i noticed you said how you like the quick tip but then want the rod to bend nicely when hooked up and i’m completely on the same boat. I’m looking for a creek trout rod and i absolutely love the quick tips on rods. great for bouncing the bottom and detecting bites but i also really want the rod to bent nicely when hooked up. do you have a preferred rod for that?
You should try the St Croix Premier 6’0 UL rod. I have it and I think it is absolutely perfect. Very light and good amount of backbone and bends great when a fish is on. Do you think that Daiwa Tatula 1000 is worth spending that money for UL because it is so light?
I will definitely keep that rod in mind, thanks Wesley! And I think this reel is probably a bit over-the-top however I am in love with it. It is light, comfortable to fish, and should last a long time so I think it is worth it.
I hope you get well soon I know summer time colds suck. I've been looking for a 6ft or 6 1/2 ft light action spinning rod for creek fishing. I wanted something that would still make it fun for rockbass and panfish but hold up to bass. I have a couple of light action rods now that are 5 1/2 ft but I wanted something a little longer for better casting. Do you have any recommendations? 👊👍
Thanks Samuel, I was simply tired that day but got over it very fast! Appreciate the kind words. As far as recommendations go, I would go with the 13 Fishing Defy Silver. They offer a 6'6 L and an UL. I have seriously loved my 5'6 UL since getting it and can't recommend it enough. Plus it is pretty affordable!
Have you ever tried the Airstream PTC(Panfish, Trout,Crappie) rod from bass pro? I had a 6'6" UL and now have a 6' UL. Have only experienced the St Croix Panfish in a store. With both in hand, I just couldn't justify twice the money for the St. Croix. I run 6# on mine with a 1000 series reel. Have had too many 2-5# bass hit my jigs to feel comfy with 2#
Ive got this rod in the 6, 6'9, and the 6'6...dont step on the tip lol. overall the 6' is very bottom heavy even with a sedona 500 but is very fun, i paired my 7 with a daiwa legalis 2500 and sits perfectly balanced, they're nice rods for the price, the customer service was fantastic and as a wisconsin native i guess im partial. Keep up the great content. I'll be ordering more donkey tails soon.
Right on Kyle! Definitely a nice rod but we all have our own preferences. I like the feel of a different balance but that’s not to say anything is wrong with St Croix 🤠 I guess that’s why there are so many dang rod companies out there lol
Bought the same canoe last weekend. Super nice and easy to throw around. 56 pounds is the weight. But to St Croix, they get a lot, and I mean a lot of fanfare, and they are super solid rods, but I’ve seen the same thing as you. They are very top heavy, even their Panfish series. Sold all of em and went to TFO - Trout and Panfish series. The Phenix rods are legit too if you want to open the wallet for em.
Sounds like we are very similar anglers John :) I LOVE this kayak. In fact, my next video will be about it. And I actually just ordered a TFO trout and panfish series so that will be a future video lol
@@FishAnything Very similar, both in search for those big bluegill/redear! I think you will like the TFO, solid company, and just great feeling rods. I'm looking forward to the canoe/kayak/hybrid? review! My only complaint with the 119 is them using wood for yoke/thwarts. I think a composite would have went along better with whole scheme of that model, but that is nit picking for sure.
🤔 just wondering if St croix is much better than Shakespeare is. I know you can use st croix for can fishing but can you use it for trout fishing as well. I'm looking for a brand that I can count on and trust and that's good for trout fishing.
Absolutely can use it for both. I think this rod's taper would work quite well for trout. That being said, if you are looking for something versatile, I would recommend the Fenwick Eagle. So far, I feel that is one of my favorite "all purpose" ultralights. I love the 13 Fishing Defy Silver too but that may be a bit too stout for a trout.
Excellent video! I was a little disappointed with my St Croix to be honest. Like you, I prefer a good balance with a fast or extra fast action, and its just a bit too soft. I feel like I'm missing lighter bites. My absolute favorite is actually a budget rod, the TCB series from Leland's Lures. It's perfect (to my tastes), and it's landed quite a few larger bass with no problem.
Sounds like we are very similar in what we look for in our equipment. I have really enjoyed my Defy Silver & my Dobyns Sierra. I will have to check out the TCB series too!
Nice rod review. I have the same rod and really like it but, would agree it’s a bit whippy. What Dobyn’s ultralight rod do you prefer? Interested in getting another ultralight and really like my Dobyn’s bass rods. Thanks and happy fishing.
I have the 6'2 Trout & Panfish Ultralight & it is freaking dope. Favorite ultralight for sure. I haven't tried their other sizes but that rod has been very good to me. One watch-out is the solid carbon tip... Probably would advise against fishing braid with it because it is very easily "wrappable". I broke one (my own fault) but have since replaced it.
Thanks! I may have to just get one. Dobyn’s is pretty generous and offers a 30% discount to military Veterans so, hard to not buy more from them. I recently stumbled upon your channel and love it. Found you through watching Debo. Love ultralight fishing as it is always fun even when you are only catching dinks. Any idea when your Donkey Tail Jr.’s will be back in stock?
Hope you feel better. Do you think you could try out a cheap rod and compare it to some of the nicer rods. I use a 5'6 Shakespeare Durango from Walmart. I love the rod and have caught everything from a 7lb largemouth, a few 2.75lb spotted bass, to bluegill on it. I think it would be interesting to see the differences. The rod costs $7.99 and I have a Mitchel 308 reel on it.
I think you reviewed the older version. There is a newer Trout and Panfish series that have EVA handles and claim newer carbon fiber both lighter and stronger (2.7 oz). I played around with the 6 foot UL along with a Phenix Elixir and Daiwa Presso, and preferred the St Croix
Yeah I have yet to fish the new model but I have felt them. I think I like St Croix in anything sub-6' but anything over 6' seems to be tip heavy for my own personal preference. No question they make a high quality blank though.
That rod is a very good ultralight. Couple more if you haven't done them the Shimano Sienna is a nice budget ultralight combo. Also try the 1 inch EPF (Extreme Philly fishing) swim. I know it will kill on some panfish.
Ive never been a fan of st Croix rods. And something I've been wanting to do with my ultalights is drop shoting for bluegills. NICE canoe. And ya can never have enough rods or kayaks 😆
Haha yeah I have a problem with all these rods and kayaks... But yeah I respect St. Croix and definitely believe they make a solid product, but I don't think they fit my style too much. Just not the balance I like in a rod! But I know a ton of folks who love them so clearly personal preference is a big part of all this.
I will say I've noticed that trout seem to be skidish when biting on faster action rods. I actually prefer a more "whippy" rod for trout. They drop the bait less when I use a rod with more give to it. This rod should SMASH on the trout in the creeks and streams.
Depends on what youre fishing with. I find my light power extra fast action rod is unbeatable when fishing spinners for trout. The hook sets itself and it’s super sensitive to feel every little thing that contacts the lure when retrieving
@@SchoologyGames that's a very valid point!! I tend to fish deeper for trout and for more pressured fish. I have the most success with this tactic working a lightweight jig.
Definitely agree that I don't want too stout of a rod for trout personally. I like a stouter rod for sunfish, bass, and other species that I stumble upon while UL fishing. I think a softer tip is solid for crappie & trout though!
Fluorocarbon less than 6lb test has given me more problems than mono. It seems to be very brittle in low-diameter sizes. The mono is much more forgiving!
@@ryan89870 i used to ask the same thing, but after years of experience, 4lb mono and fluro don’t really matter for aggressive panfish and trout. they usually work the same for me
I was super close to buying this….but I don’t like the grip design towards the top where your thumb goes…..I want my thumb on cork, not plastic. That turned me off. I think I’ll go with the St. Croix Triumph instead.
I know this is an old review but it's a 6'9" rod! You're not going to have a well balanced 7' (close to) rod with ultralight setups. You should review the St. Croix Panfish series with a proper length like the 6'. The other rods you rave about are much shorter length than this one, I believe you'd have a different opinion if you compared apples to apples.
That’s fair feedback! That being said, the Phenix Elixir has been tested at a 7’6 length and it balanced properly with a size 1000 reel. Ultimately rod manufacturers need to create optimal balance no matter what the length. A 6’9 ultralight doesn’t call for a 2500 size reel, so why make it so tip heavy?
@@FishAnything Of course. I love my 5"4" UL. I usually opt for shorter rods but I notice most people go with the longer variations. The premier series ultra light is another Id like to try. I have the 5'6" light action and 6' ML and they are both incredible. Such a great feel and I love how they balance. I prefer less weight in the handle.
Yeah and for me, I feel like I actually detect bites better when the rod tip is lighter. Could be all in my head but we all have preferences with our gear. No right or wrong answer - just what works best for you individually!
Lmao it probably is time for a haircut but I have never had long hair so I am keeping it going! I have always wanted to rock long hair so I am finally doing it :)
New toys.......ooooooo..........sat in waiting for my new kayak coming today. Very excited!
Hope you got the kayak and it is everything you dreamed of and more :)
Been playing with it in the yard. Got lots of new things to fasten and adjust - times they are good!
I have this rod in 1 piece UL 6’ and it’s absolutely my favorite rod. Caught everything from dinks to 6lb peacock bass on it. Very sensitive and cast great. Same here. It’s my favorite rod.
You could heat up the tip, and switch it out, only about $5 USD for everything

@@FishAnything I think you are right. I don’t find my 6’ to be whippy or noodly at all. Performs just as expected from a fast action rod.
Im glad you said "Bass sitting in 2 inches of water" because I just caught my biggest Largemouth out of Lake Mead this past friday on the 1/16th black mule jig with the Spark Shad in what seemed like 2 inches of water. Solid video and great explainer on the rod.
That bass chasing your lure as it's just sitting in the water is wild!
It freaked me out haha and thanks Ramon! Always have fun with these rod reviews.
I have the same rod but in their ultralight trout series. I have used that rod for years and have landed some of my biggest trout and my largest walleye, whitefish and sauger. I love it to death.
That is awesome! Heard good things about the trout series too - glad to hear it has been good to you over the years!
Me too. Great rod.
A few months ago I got a 6lbs channel on a St. Croix Triumph 6’ Lite. Great for ultralight fishing!
I bet that was a dang blast! I hear good things about those Triumph rods.
Great video as always OO, it's pretty relax watching your video. Daiwa and St croix are all my favorite brand! Great job!

I was wondering because I am new to fishing with jig head weights. Can I throw a 1/16 oz jig head on this rod or is that to heavy for it.

I have same model but in 6 foot I too think it’s more of a moderate tip although it’s rated fast. And it’s whippy but it’s still a nice panfish rod.
Great rod, but I think St Croix doesn't rate their rods very consistently. Good point, John.
But I know a ton of folks who love them so clearly personal preference is a big part of all this.
what’s that reel your running on that setup ?
Daiwa Tatula LT 1000
Their extra fast is nice
The UL master
Not a master of much... But I will take this title :D
What size braid are you using?
6lb braid with a 4lb mono leader!
@@FishAnything Sweet, thanks! Curious to why mono instead of a fluoro leader?
Fluorocarbon less than 6lb test has given me more problems than mono. It seems to be very brittle in low-diameter sizes. The mono is much more forgiving!
@@ryan89870 i used to ask the same thing, but after years of experience, 4lb mono and fluro don’t really matter for aggressive panfish and trout. they usually work the same for me
I was super close to buying this….but I don’t like the grip design towards the top where your thumb goes…..I want my thumb on cork, not plastic. That turned me off. I think I’ll go with the St. Croix Triumph instead.
Right on, gotta find what works best for you! Lmk how you like that rod 🤠
@@FishAnything - Do you feel it’s odd feeling in that spot or do you completely not notice it?
Just scored a 6ft version of this rod at a garage sale for $10.
That is a dang steal!
What’s your favorite ultra light??
Dobyns Sierra followed by the 13 Fishing Defy Silver!
👍
👍👍
Thumbs up fellas :D
I think the trout series has a tad more backbone.
Good intel! I will have to try a trout series someday.
Try a plunger rod
lmao are you talking about the Bass Pro Shops Crappie Plunger?
Can you give me some rod u not use anymore sir ?
The day will come. Gotta save up more money to invest. Selling a high quality fishing rod takes a lot of capital haha
St croix is very tip heavy. Their reel seat is always uncomfortable too
Definitely a different feel than what I prefer but I know some folks really like the balance. To each his own!
Panfishing with "Poopie Pant's". 💩😂
That dang fish dirtied up my brand new kayak!
@@FishAnything 😅
I definitely do not like tip-heavy rods. After an all-day fishing trip, your wrist and forearm are sore and exhausted.
Yeah and for me, I feel like I actually detect bites better when the rod tip is lighter. Could be all in my head but we all have preferences with our gear. No right or wrong answer - just what works best for you individually!
not worth $145, TFO trout is $70 and feels better in every way
I tend to prefer the TFO as well. I think it is $110 now though.
St. Croix makes a nice Rod but very expensive. Time for a haircut hippy?
Lmao it probably is time for a haircut but I have never had long hair so I am keeping it going! I have always wanted to rock long hair so I am finally doing it :)
Man you keep buying UL rods and kayaks lol. Save money and invest in Microchip companies like amd or nvidia
Lol I am pretty happy with investing in kayaks and fishing rods :)
I hate poopy pants😂
