I had a look at them and they always have two or three things that are annoying and hold the product back. And at that price it's hard to justify. I am glad they are slowly moving towards repairability, but they could have done that from Day Zero. It is good to see the overall quality has gone up too. But they should really have targetted the audience better: 16inch, big battery, dGPU, powerful 13inch, slim, iGPU, affordable 11inch, tablet, for professionals like Doctors, Nurses, etc etc. And for a decent while now, AMD has been offering the better chipset. System76 hasn't budged from Intel camp. I guess things were alright upto Intel i9-9980HK, i7-8665U, and i5-8500Y chipsets. But AMD basically has dominated since the r5-6600u and up. And there's no comparison to Apple M1-lineup of laptops and tablets.
Yeah I am kinda disappointed about the mic...it does a horrible job of blocking out ambient sounds....if you're in a quiet room....the mic is fine but if you have a fan running or outside, it flat out stinks.
Bro 1,199 starting out????????? For a Linux laptop that can’t even game well????????? I’m just better off getting a shitty thinkpad and then putting Linux mint on it if all I want to do is take notes and doing homework
That's the main problem I have with these laptops. Why should I buy such an expensive laptop when I can buy (or find) a used laptop for far cheaper and much better performance
I had a bad experience with the System 76 Pangolin laptop. After about 6 months, the laptop fan noise became indicator of heating up. Display went dark a few weeks later. The Chicony adapter cabling is not robust.
Additional thoughts, about my Darter Pro (darp9), I feel it lot heavier than I expected, but not very heavy like a gaming laptop. But I love this laptop now anyway. the speakers are not at all loud enough. Sound quality is average. But in linux you can overpower your speaker to 150% to get the normal laptop level volume. Donno if it'll damage speakers long term
I disagree with the barrel jack thing, becasue it allows usb-c charging anyways the barrel jack might as well just be an extra option. If i where to forget my charger in a trip to my parents house, chances are im more likely to find a barrel jack charger than a usb-c charger. The mic is atrocious tho wth xD I would really like a PC like this but with a touch screen, these small, low power notebooks can get a whole more interesting when you can turn them into a tablet as well.
So I'm watching this video from a 2023 Darter Pro (darp9 - Black). I'm so relieved that I didnt get this new ugly Darter. After watching the mic part, I went to test mine too, since I rarely use it. The cheese camera app for linux crashed while recording and VLC crashed while trying to play corrupted recording. So I tested mic alone on online mic test website, and happy to confirm its 5 times better mic. But the new Darter in this video is 10 times uglier and fat. Thanks
Thanks for the review. I may not have bough one of these if I saw your review first. The Darter Pro is a lemon. Being the owner of a Darter Pro, I know how badly made they are and how useless their support staff are.
That mic is bad and makes you sound like horror movie Sujano with that voice. "If you want to see your daughter alive then do what I say" kind if voice. Con tar versial ! Tar! Con Tar! Thats you that is.
Jack of all trades, master of none. In this case it's just trades, not even Jack, more like Rebecca. Just get a zenbook. Mine was 1099 on Black Friday and its wayyyyyyyyyyyyyy, way better than this crap, and I can even hook it up to 3 different monitors (with a dongle) and an external GPU if i wanted it. Full aluminium chassis too. This system 76 is more like order 66. That battery is a joke too. The zenbook 14 inches has more than 15h of battery easy.
I have had the issue on linux that my mic volume would randomly be set to something like 1000%, the audio would sound the exact same as yours. Try looking in your mic volume settings.
Feel like if you want a laptop with linux around that price range just get a framework laptop... At least its modular and just as premium feeling. Not sure why the Sys76 laptop is so expensive compared to other business laptops in the same range
When you said 1900 pixels I just had to check the official specs. Thankfully, it's 1920. Why does it matter? Because if you have a Bluray player that absolutely sucks are screenshots, screencaps are your only option, which means just capping the entire screen. And if the screen is larger or smaller than 1920 horizontally, you will get a less than perfect screencap of any widescreen movie. Also, mentioning the screen refresh rate is important.
I am using a Toshiba Satellite with Intel integrated graphics 5500 and so far has been great running Linux Mint. It surprises me still on what it can do. I was surprised it could run PSX emulation. Then I tested PSP and ran fine as well at 720p. Tempted to test out PS2, but figure it will hit a brick wall there. It also has a built in keypad and DVD drive. I want to get a new budget laptop at some point, but not sure which one to look for.
It would be great if added text to the video when talking about the hardware, such as the processor model. This really helps no native speakers. Great vid!
All Linux laptops are expensive for no reason 😂. It's not for everyone that's for sure. Me I'm sticking with my msi gf65 15.6 laptop and the portable Linux install on the USB.... Paid 800 bucks for that thing and it has a 3060! Great review overall 😊
Clevo business laptops are known for their weak mic and speakers, it is not a surprise. System76 sells clevo laptops with coreboot and popOS, which explains the higher price. Otherwise, the same HW can be purchased from other resellers at a cheaper price. All is about the linux experience we want and enthusiasm about it.
Shoutouts to System76 for having the courage to loan this to me for a fair and honest review!
congrats on being able to do the review, hope more to come :)
On the basis that you have been showing their brand logo for a while now, it would have been surprising if they didn't.
I had a look at them and they always have two or three things that are annoying and hold the product back. And at that price it's hard to justify.

This is like when Apple had the courage to remove the headphone jack. 😭😭😭
4:20 the best part of the video
Fk me, my ears are under attack
4:20
That mic absolotely killed me lol
Judging by the timestamp, I think the mic was taking a smoke break.
Yeah I am kinda disappointed about the mic...it does a horrible job of blocking out ambient sounds....if you're in a quiet room....the mic is fine but if you have a fan running or outside, it flat out stinks.
@@christopherturcotte3978 It's because the microphone volume was set to 100% by default, which is more than the microphone can handle.
@@mmstick There should be a warning in the DE.
4:20 this would be even better if the video quality was 144p
hahaha the webcam is fairly decent
That mic... YIKES!
It's this reason why I prefer external microphones hooked up to the computer rather than internal built-in microphones, but I digress.
It's because the microphone gain was set to 100%. This is what an overmodulated microphone sounds like. It sounds fine if you lower it down.
did you ask system76 about the mic? maybe you have a faulty unit.
The microphone volume is at 100% by default, which causes it to overmodulate like this. It sounds better if you turn it down.
@@mmstick Can confirm. I received Darter Pro 16 yesterday and when I change mic volume to 40-50% it sounds quite good.
My Darter Pro has a terrible mike, terrible speakers and a Bluetooth range of about 4 feet.
jesus christ that microphone is a meme
$1200 and it can't even run Zelda at 30fps, hard pass.
Oh hell naw
Intel integrated graphics moment
Not everyone wants to lug around a shitty gaming laptop that will overheat and drain out quick.
What's the difference between a hard pass and a soft pass?
@@endoflevelboss Hard Pass = You're *_absolutely_* not interested.
Soft Pass = You're *_somewhat_* not interested.
When are you going to do a review of the cellphone adaptors into laptops and docking stations like you can turn into a computer on Amazon website
Nice to see you doing different kinda of content. For the laptop itself, this kinda sucks. The Framework 13 AMD is the clear choice here
My brother in Christ, that audio test will summon the devil if left running 😂😂😂
When it comes to laptop mics and speakers, I've never had a good experience. I'm always plugging in externals.
For all their limitations, Macbooks sound very nice, so it can be done.
The microphone makes you sound possessed! 😂😂😂

Great review. Wish you had a Pangolin review to match it
What was the refresh rate on the darter pro, 120hz or 144hz?
the mic is rubbish, they might as well not add that in at all...
This has 4k60 usb-c to displayport capability?
Hey everyone
howdy
not sure how we can get this kind of mic/video and speaker quality in something that's $1000+ in 2024, but here we are.
Mr Sujano what makes this any better than a Framework 13? I see no benefits over this thing
do u guys knows how to buy in Japan😭
If you watch Mr. Sujano videos daily, this laptop may not be for you.
very fair review

You only buy System76 because you want a Linux laptop assembled and firmware flashed in the US that comes with support.

how much they pay him for this review 😂😂😂 dont lost your line sujano please !
Maybe should of given a headphone warning for people. jumped out of my skin.
System 76 more like fallout 76
Why is the logo so big and ugly
Chinese brand, bet.
hehe, first

I know that there is a new system on Linux operating systems that is better than Windows

I'm was wondering if you still do products reviews, thanks man!
Yes I do!
At that price? Think it’d be better to get a steamdeck and hook it up to a dock.
For that price you get 3 steamdecks 😂

1000%!? Mine was set down to about 75%, then 50% and it was still clipping...even after a fresh install of the OS.

Great video!! Always a thorough review and keeping it real.
Who wants to pay $1500 for a shitty mic?
Really, alienware? You lost all your credibility
That's your takeaway?! I took advantage of a pricing error a few years back. 😎
