Solidteknics isn’t spun steel, it’s wrought… they have a patented method for creating each of their pieces directly out of single sheets of flat steel. Amazing cookware - love their woks and pans!
Solidteknics gear is awesome! Your comment about the importance of seasoning is spot on too. ST is not ***SPUN*** steel, it’s wrought pressed steel. They make short handled versions too, which are easier to fit in the camper when touring around. Work exceptionally well over open fire, gas or electric. Induction is probably really good too - but I’ve never tried it. Thanks forvyourvexcellentbvgannel!👌👏👏👏🤙😃
Stoked you’re finally giving the Solidteknics gear a run. I’ve been a convert for a couple of years with experience in both cast iron and the wrought iron and have to say the lighter weight, quicker to heat up (and cool) and overall ease of use with the ST pans is a winner for me. Holds a seasoning very well. worth checking out their XHD versions in a pan and flat skillet which is 4mm thick,31cm in size,2.6kg (I have) and is a beast!
Actually the Solid Teknics is not spun steel. It is wrought steel - made from a single sheet of Australian steel that is pressed into shape without a separate riveted handle. I am awaiting delivery of mine and am looking forward to trying it against my spun steel Hillbilly pan. Such a trial in having to do test cooks.
Love cooking on a grill like that over the fire. The flavour of the smoke just enhances the flavour of the steak in my opinion. I haven't used the others to cook with over a fire but have cooked steak done in the frying pan at home and its not bad but I much rather on the grill over a fire or even straight on the coals. As for Induction the only Positive I can see from them is there is no wait period to get a good fire and coals base set up. They are quick and easy and a waste of money. A gas burner is just as quick and I will say better not to mention much cheaper.
I have cooked in both cast iron & SPUN steel (Hillbilly) camp ovens & got similar results whichever one I used. The Spun steel unit heats more quickly & is appreciably lighter to carry, especially in these times where we are able to get our vehicles weighed to satisfy Insurance Companies that our combinations are not overweight.
Code word: SPUN Thanks guys, that was really informative and interesting. The steak looked delicious 🥩 I do own an induction cooktop, but only take camping with me as a backup if I run out of gas or the firewood is wet. I don’t own a cast iron or a solidteknics skillet, just use a crapy old frying pan. Thanks
I love spun steel. Bought 2 big Hill Billy camp ovens and frypan 40 years ago and they are still used frequently. On fire, on gas, with charcoal and wood, all work.
Hi Harry glad to see you have got a Solidteknics pan at last they are wrought iron. If you preferred the straight on the grid taste you should try the holey pan(flaming skillet).
Nice work, I've got a couple of the "spun" steel (wrought-iron) solidteknic pans at home and they're awesome, just need to get another one for the camp kit.
I am yet to be convinced on the whole "mass holding heat" thing. Yes, I agree that the thinner SPUN steel (oh, look....there's the codeword) will initially lose heat, but being thinner, I feel it will also very quickly recover the heat. Whereas the heavier mass of cast iron may not lose the heat as quickly, but it will take a lot longer to recover (thus the having to move the steak around the pan). I would appreciate your professional opinion on this, as I am no expert in the cooking department, and may be seeing this all wrong. Love your content, keep up the great work. Cheers.
I think you SPUN a tale with the SPUN steel pan because it's wrought iron steel from a solid piece of wrought ion steel. Also bet the handle is cooler on the solidteknics than the the cast iron. The solidteknics will be non stick if seasoned with ricebran oil.
I have a couple of spun steel Hillbilly brand fry pans. The 30cm skillet gets used every time I cook steak and mushrooms and asparagus for myself when I'm batching. Love your work mate. 👍🐕🤠
Hi Harry, I have a Solid Technics Non Nickel, Seamless Stainless Steel pan that cooks better than both Spun or Cast ... The 'Spun' Steel is just a process of Spinning mild carbon steel to form the 'bowl' of the pan ... Pressed Steel is .... .. . Keep Up the Good Work ... ,
After reading your cookbook that we picked up at the Perth show (signed 😀) my hubby now wants a "spun" wok... guess he'll be adding a spun fry pan too 🤣
You spun me right round with that one, mate. I actually love that you feature stuff I can use at home too (can't go camping) and can even nip to the mall and pick up. And I must miss it too, but do you throw out the locations you're at? Or you worried about getting stalked, haha.
I would say you're spot on with the seasoning observation with the cast vs spun pans. I bet if you put some butter and herbs in either pan, it would be as good as the fire. Cheers!
Totally shocked that spun got your vote over cast, My local IGA supplied some of the best T-bone steaks, was so amazed, they were huge, I'd season and marinade them then straight on the og Weber, as hot as possible, grilled asparagus and mushroom sauce, all home made, no packet crap, favorite camping meal of all time, Steak in a pan is only necessary if you want top flambe IMO, can fancy it up a bit more with grilled tomatoes with panko but can't really pull that off directly with fire without using a pan. nor can you do the sauce without a pan, anyway, Fire and grill all the way Harry, also congrats once more for blowing my mind and being with Ronny, Torban, Lecca and all the crew at the show on channel 7, so happy for yas.
It you want high quality pressed carbon steel pans try "de buyers" pans. Made in France for 180 year's or something. The carbone plus and mineral b pans are 3mm thick. They are amazingly non stick after treatment.
Harry , Fred is the most well behaved dog around food. He is so patient. Please tell/show us that you donate some of that steak to Fred later on as a reward for his exceptional behaviour. SPUN steel is the poor mans Cast Iron.
Lodge cast iron has a range thats 25% lighter called Blacklock the 26cm cast iron is 1.9kg so only .2kg heavier than the solidteknics spun steel and way cheaper than both the iron clad cast iron and solidteknics spun steel i got mine from amazon for $115 delivered.
I agree, straight on the fire is best, but I do love my Solidteknics for camping & at home cooking on gas only, because I pretty much refuse to cook on induction! 🤣 I don’t care how much better induction stoves are now, they still suck imo 😊 I would still do a super light mist of grapeseed or peanut oil with a non aerosol sprayer for a better sear.
Who would’ve thought… great vid as always. would definitely get a ‚spun‘ steel one for the travels, also the spun steel camp oven if it weren’t for the shipping to the other side of the globe….
This episode spun me out. The Induction cook top would of probably worked better if you had throw it in the fire. Still love my cast iron and open fire, both would be my 2 favourites. Love your content mate thanks for the education. ✌️
Spun steel for me as weight is always a problem. Induction cookers vary in coil sizes and the larger ones are expensive. They can produce heat very fast which is why your plate cracked.
very interesting I don't own a good cast iron pan just the cheap ones from Kmart for camping Now looking for a kick Ars Spun iron from online great video thumbs up
Great comparison Harry, I am thinking I will go for a good SPUN steel pan for my kit. And I think your right over time it will develop great tastes. Safe travels, Cheers Pieter 👍
"spun" I have a cast iron set but have been considering for a while now a spun steel oven and pan ... This is making me want it more. I just don't feel confident with the cast iron seasoning and cleaning since I haven't used it much
Hi Harry, a little late for a SPUN but I just returned from 18 days up the coast to the Kennedy Ranges and then south through the Muchinson. I have this nice Red Roads fire pit that I have only used once as everywhere I go there are either fire bans or no open fires allowed. How am I going to get to use this thing?
The best steaks I’ve ever had are those cooked in an oven type environment using charcoal such as a Cobb oven or Weber kettle oven where there is a 360 degree heat circulation around the steak. It’s pretty fool proof and hard to over cook or dry out a steak cooking this way. Cooking over a flame on a skillet you lose overhead heat and it dosent keep the moisture in. But I love your videos 👍
Best wagyu method! Room temp at least 1/2hour.. Malden sea salt and pepper good dusting.. super hot cast iron pan! At least for the first few turns..20 secs per side no exceptions!!!!! Take off only and rest after moisture is dancing 💃 let rest for at least 5 mins! Super tip.. wash down with cheap French red to enhance meat and pepper flavour!!! Honestly try this and you will never look back 💥
Cast iron has all the little imperfections in the surface, which causes greater surface area and burns all the little bits on the outside of the steak.

I liked your update on the "spun" pan. Makes total sense.
I recently did a half-half with my steak.
Fire and then finished in a cast iron pan with by herb butter sauce. Best steak I have had for a long time!!
My head about spun when you said straight on the fire is best
All good things take TIME and EFFORT .. Fire for the win.
Loved the way you guys SPUN a tale on the ways to chow down wagu steaks. Speaking of Tails, I am sure Fred would love the Induction Version. Cheers.
Love cooking on a grill like that over the fire. The flavour of the smoke just enhances the flavour of the steak in my opinion. I agree harry straight on the fire for me. No spun steel

It's amazing the story you "Spun" in this episode Harry. Congratulations on another amazing episode
Nice work, I've got a couple of the "spun" steel (wrought-iron) solidteknic pans at home and they're awesome, just need to get another one for the camp kit.
I love that you don’t wear shoes!!
“Spun” steel for the win.
I have been researching this same topic at the moment so this is a great review! Cheer
Not a fair comparison, try the solid technics "spun" steel pan on the induction instead of cast iron and you'll be surprised with the results!
Really good to know about how the seasoning of the pan flavours the meat!
“Spun”
Spun is light weight and this is a interesting video. Thanks for sharing

Spun me round to just use fire when in any doubt from now on! Cheers Haz!
I think you SPUN a tale with the SPUN steel pan because it's wrought iron steel from a solid piece of wrought ion steel. Also bet the handle is cooler on the solidteknics than the the cast iron. The solidteknics will be non stick if seasoned with ricebran oil.
Thanks for your inspiration and your crispy chips
Fire is always going to be my favourite. I think the hot plate on induction was never going to cut it. Should've put a Solidteknics on the induction.
Cool episode Harry I’ve never heard of those Aussie ‘spun’ steel pans I’ll be buying one of those for sure!
Can’t beat cooking over the 🔥
Enjoyed the comparison between "spun" steel and cast iron.
I have a couple of spun steel Hillbilly brand fry pans. The 30cm skillet gets used every time I cook steak and mushrooms and asparagus for myself when I'm batching. Love your work mate. 👍🐕🤠
I have just got a Hillbilly SPUN steel pan. Can't wait to try it out.

,
After reading your cookbook that we picked up at the Perth show (signed 😀) my hubby now wants a "spun" wok... guess he'll be adding a spun fry pan too 🤣
Harry has spun another great story ;)
ps. I'm curious how a good pan would go on the induction
Good comparison, though id be interested in seeing the "spun" steel pan or cast iron pan cook a steak on the induction cooker
Solidteknics is induction compatible but beware after you buy your first Solidteknics pan you will buy more they cook food beautifully
I love my Solidteknics pan! Honestly one of the best
This episode “spun” me out the difference between them especially the induction cooker!
You spun me right round with that one, mate. I actually love that you feature stuff I can use at home too (can't go camping) and can even nip to the mall and pick up. And I must miss it too, but do you throw out the locations you're at? Or you worried about getting stalked, haha.
Unfortunately I don’t share these regular filming spots because they tend to get overrun. Thanks mate!
Already have a copy of your book. Heading out to try some spun steel items for our fire cooking.
I would say you're spot on with the seasoning observation with the cast vs spun pans. I bet if you put some butter and herbs in either pan, it would be as good as the fire. Cheers!
Spun mate! Great guest you had on the show looks like a good bloke. Keep them coming!
I was spun out watching this episode, will defo be checking out the spun steel pan as another tool in the armoury
This video Spun me out! Very interesting and informative. Thankyou for sharing
SPUN a good yarn there. Thanks for the insight.
Bugger I’ll have to get a spun steel pan but I’ve got to agree Fire is the best
I’m loving what I am seeing and hearing about the Solidteknics Aus-ion and it will be joining my arsenal soon. Spun is the ‘new’ way to go. 🤔
Was really awesome for you to include the update on the Spun steel. Didn’t know the Spun steel could hold seasoning!
I’m mostly impressed by how the dog sat there and didn’t smash all that steak 😂
He must have fed him well first, LOL.
called training, my dog wont touch it either, and before you go crazy shes fed extremely well
This video SPUN me out. On my way shortly to the butcher to purchase some steaks for dinner. Thanks for the inspiration.
Spun .... fire looked amazing
I have been using solidtek for last 2 yrs and absolutely love it.. wouldnt swap for any other cookware.
It you want high quality pressed carbon steel pans try "de buyers" pans. Made in France for 180 year's or something. The carbone plus and mineral b pans are 3mm thick. They are amazingly non stick after treatment.
Good that it didn't get spun out of control.
Harry , Fred is the most well behaved dog around food. He is so patient. Please tell/show us that you donate some of that steak to Fred later on as a reward for his exceptional behaviour. SPUN steel is the poor mans Cast Iron.
You always spun such a great tale!
Harry, thanks for the video and a seasoned Spun Steel for the win and its lighter 👍👍👍
You have spun me over with this video, cheers
I get SPUN out every time i eat a steak cooked over 🔥.
Great vid, great comparison 👏
I'm a cast iron fan all the way, I have never tried a "spun" steel pan as they are not common here in Canada.
Saving weight using spun is the way to go. Interested to see a replay using the pan on the induction at full power?
Lodge cast iron has a range thats 25% lighter called Blacklock the 26cm cast iron is 1.9kg so only .2kg heavier than the solidteknics spun steel and way cheaper than both the iron clad cast iron and solidteknics spun steel i got mine from amazon for $115 delivered.
When you see Harry spinning his wheels in Melbourne. You can't not check out him "spun" ning his steaks on UA-cam. Great vid! Thanks Harry!
You’ve “spun” me out with your good look’n Wagyu Harry. Absolutely loving it,but hey does it go with beer? 😜
You just spun me round to that idea
Love your work mate . Spun
Just in Tyne progress of buying spun steel oven will definitely add the pan as well.👍👍👍
Cheers Wombat 🐾🔥🥩
I agree, straight on the fire is best, but I do love my Solidteknics for camping & at home cooking on gas only, because I pretty much refuse to cook on induction! 🤣 I don’t care how much better induction stoves are now, they still suck imo 😊

is there still a harry promo code for the braai grid? looking at picking up another
I think you have just Spun me a bit of a yarn regarding cooking methods, but I will agree for open fire for the best.
Hi I like your shows. I think you do your best on open fire but the "spun" steak did look really good cheers
Spun. Been interested in the solidtekniks for a while. Great review Harry
Spun steel for me as weight is always a problem. Induction cookers vary in coil sizes and the larger ones are expensive. They can produce heat very fast which is why your plate cracked.
Good comparisons. Spun for the win for weight!
That has spun me out out Harry.
Does he hotplate on the induction sit flat? Maybe put a good flat cast iron pan on it like the one on the fire.
very interesting I don't own a good cast iron pan just the cheap ones from Kmart for camping Now looking for a kick Ars Spun iron from online great video thumbs up
As others have said, Solidteknics is NOT "spun" steel, it's wrought - it's a unique process and has been patented by Mark Henry.
"Spun" great episode!
Great comparison Harry, I am thinking I will go for a good SPUN steel pan for my kit. And I think your right over time it will develop great tastes. Safe travels, Cheers Pieter 👍
"spun"
I have a cast iron set but have been considering for a while now a spun steel oven and pan ... This is making me want it more. I just don't feel confident with the cast iron seasoning and cleaning since I haven't used it much
Induction to fork would be a good meme page, I'd take the spun steal
I’m yet to try a SPUN pan, loving my cast iron pan right now though, definitely keen to invest in a spun pan now 🔥🔥🔥
"Mine don't have any errors over there..."
🤣
Hi Harry, a little late for a SPUN but I just returned from 18 days up the coast to the Kennedy Ranges and then south through the Muchinson. I have this nice Red Roads fire pit that I have only used once as everywhere I go there are either fire bans or no open fires allowed. How am I going to get to use this thing?
Spun! Awesome video!!!
That spun me out guy’s
I need to read this cook book cause atm I’m wired to a bed In a ccu with a traitor for a heart 🍺🍺
Spun
I have a spun steel camp over and I love it
Spun out with this one, who would have thought the induction would be naff 😝
SPUN steel pan looks like a good option
Those results spun me out😂🤘🇦🇺🔥
Love cooking over fire. 👍🇦🇺❤️🍺
Spun me out again mate ,awesome clip 👍
SPUN for weight, seems the winner.
Without a massive inverter and the coin to have one, induction seems unnecessary.
Is spun steel less porous than cast iron and less likely to hold “flavour “ from seasoning?
