This video and also the one to change the mower belt on the 48” deck were terrific! So clear description with some clever but not readily apparent suggestions makes changing the belt(s) dramatically easier. Keep up the excellent videos!

@@JohnsonsSmallEngines I will do that! My X300 still will not move (easily) where it had been working fine up until just prior to replacing the belt. It has a “whine” or possibly a grinding sound - that was why I changed the stretched and cracked 10 year old belt - could it just be fluid level or could the hydrostatic trans be shot?
How many hours are on it? Do you tow with the tractor? Do you have hills on the property? All of that can factor into the transmission failing. If you lost fluid, you would see a leak. If you can change it? I am not sure if that transmission is serviceable, meaning there may be a drain but I do not think so. To change the fluid you would need to pull the transmission. If a tractor comes into my shop with a poor working hydro, If I replace the drive belt and pulleys doesn't fix it. I would only replace the transmission with a new one because 99% of the time changing the transmission oil will not repair a sluggish transmission and pulling the transmission out to drain it is way to much $$$ in labor to find out it did not work.
My X300 started making a huge grinding noise while cutting. I stopped it and had to push it to the garage (after pulling the rod). Not sure why it did this but I felt the transmission belt was loose. I figured it popped off the tensioner pulley. After I watched your video, now I know what is the problem. I'm taking it to the dealer tomorrow. I don't have the time, expertise or tools to do it myself. Thank you for doing the video.

Thanks a million I said if a one-armed man can do it, I can do it. You don't know how much you help me. I appreciate it. And I like the way that even though you only have 1 ARM you don't let it slow you down.
Thanks a lot. Great video. I used same belt. I’m getting a faint burning smell with new belt. Pulleys spin fine. There’s 2 metal belt guides on my x 304 that I didn’t see in your video. The belt rubs on them. They get real hot too. Belt looks fine, no cuts. Any chance that smell will go away.
Something is wrong. I cannot tell you what it is without seeing the machine but it isn’t correct. The belt should never contact belt guides while it is in the running position. Guides are either incorrectly installed or the belt may not be correct. I would double check your belt with your model. I do not recommend using aftermarket belts.
Again, Excellent material. Truly, food for the mechanics soul. How does the camera man do that ? THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU -- North Central Florida
How do you tip the riding mower backwards? Does it simply rest on it's back wheels and metal housing? Do you set chocks or brakes to keep it from moving?

Wow! Watching you do this job without a second hand was remarkable! I recetlky acquired a X300 and after I mowed my lawn I found a long spring, about 10", laying on the turf. I'm trying to figure out what the spring does and where it goes. I think...oie hope...its the extension spring.
If it came from your tractor it can only be transmission belt tensioner spring or mower deck belt tensioner spring. If it’s one or the other I would think one of the belts would be loose??
You will need to look the belt and pulley part numbers up for your specific tractor. Take the model and serial numbers off of the tag on the machine. You can either look them up on a John Deere website or contact your nearest John Deere dealership.

Yoo have some great videos. I've working on small engine equipment for 40 years and have only worked on one old john deere which was a basic Craftsman design by MTD. i have a X300 that i have to change both belts on. thanks for the great video.....( if i can be nosey, how did you loose your hand )? i have some friends and family with similar situations and they work harder than i do.
There are no video's on a X390, X394, X580, X584 & X 590 with hydraulic steering and lift on how to replace this drive belt. There are thousands of these tractors out there. Maybe you can make a video on one of these machines?
In my opinion, I think most people that have those bigger machines take them to a John Deere dealership. That is why you don’t see videos on those machines. I do not work on anything bigger than an X350. I take that back I have worked on an X390 and an X 500 series but no videos on them and most likely will not as I have downsized since my flooding issues back in 2021.
Working on my X360 now and the v belt pulley was wore to the core and almost flat in one area. Pulled apart because it was very noisy and loud, would the idler pulley cause that much noise and vibration? Thanks!

Hi Mark, the transmission belts normally last for a very long time as long as you do not have major hills on the property or towing heavy behind machine. Thank you for watching and commenting.
@@JohnsonsSmallEngines Good news. I live in Florida and my yard is flat. At my age (71) I am not going to tackle a Trans belt. It is an informative video. I have a Sears model that I still use that is 14 years old and never changed the belt.... LOL... I hope I didn't curse myself....
I have a JohnDeere S240 2015 and I can’t get the front pulley off to replace the Drive belt. When attempting to remove the clutch/pulley the crank turns with the bolt. Any suggestions on how to resolve this issue? I took the fly wheel course ver off and put a wrench on the top bolt, but all that did was loosen the top bolt.
Hi Mark, I have heard many ways to get the bolt off but I use air or electric impacts. The easiest way would be to borrow a electric impact. If you can not borrow one then if you have a pipe wench? use it on the pulley shaft but you need to be careful, unless you have an electric PTO and that will not work. You can try and put a strap around the flywheel and hold it, the way a oil filter strap wrench works. I have even heard of putting string inside the cylinder (take out spark plug), enough where it will fill up inside the cylinder and then the piston will not be able to compress. I would highly recommend borrowing one if you can. Some Autozones will let you borrow them but that would be depending if you live in a area that has the Autozone chain.
@@JohnsonsSmallEngines thank you for your quick response. I “think” I have an Electric PTO, so I’m thinking the a pipe wrench might not be good (or would it?). I was using an electric drill (not an impact driver). To be honest, does that make a difference?
If you have a electric PTO, the pipe wrench will not work. There is a big difference from the electric drill and the electric impact. The easiest way to get it off is by a air impact or electric impact.

Really well done video. You're to be commended for not allowing your handicap to interfere with your accomplishments. You're a really good role model
Thank you kindly! I’m glad it was helpful.
Really appreciate this video. Somehow my belt came off and I had no idea how it was supposed to routed. Your video helped a ton. Thx

Brad - thanks a million for this video; I was able to change the transmission belt on my dad's X350 thanks to you. In particular, I would not have been able to remove (or install ) the belt without disconnecting the arms from the front wheels as you demonstrated - I am sure I wouldn't have thought of that. Again, Thanks A Million!

Thank you!!! To start with picking the front end up like that makes the whole job so much easier. But detaching the control arms was the piece I was missing. I learned a lot in this video. Really well done by both of you.

Is a x340 drive belt remove the same way that x300 x320 and x350?
Awesome job!! Took the mystery out the replacement for me. Dropping control arms is the trick to getting it the belt to the engine pulley. You simplified it very well. Thank you!

Thank you very much for the excellent video. Super useful. I took a slightly different approach, removing the seat pan first (before finding your video). Having access from both the top and bottom helped. I didn't lift my X380, just worked laying down on my back.

When I say guides, they’re solid metal u shaped bars. Screwed into frame or brackets. My belt number was same part number as yours. JD X304
Thanks though. I’ll keep at it.
Sorry I can’t help much. Thank you for watching my video! Yes, just keep checking, I’m sure you will figure it out.

Awesome video. Super helpful. And yeah, I have no excuses if I can’t do it!!

Nice job and great information. Thanks Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Great and informative video. What are the JD part numbers for the belts and pulleys? Thanks again
You will need to look the belt and pulley part numbers up for your specific tractor. Take the model and serial numbers off of the tag on the machine. You can either look them up on a John Deere website or contact your nearest John Deere dealership.

Kinda wonder why they use plastic pulleys on a X3XX, and if its also plastic on the X5XX.
Will this procedure work for the x304 too. Didn't see it in your list. I appreciate your video. Thanks
I’m not 100% sure but if you install yours and it’s the same, let me know and I will add the X394 to the list.
Yes it is the exact same. I just did mine after watching this video.
The first 7 seconds of most of my videos. "I was born with only one hand".
Thanks!
Yes
Great video, big help!

I hope this doesn't fail on my x350. I'll be bringing it into the shop. lol
Hi Mark,
I have heard many ways to get the bolt off but I use air or electric impacts.
I “think” I have an
Electric PTO, so I’m thinking the a pipe wrench might not be good (or would it?). I was using an electric drill (not an impact driver). To be honest, does that make a difference?
If you have a electric PTO, the pipe wrench will not work. There is a big difference from the electric drill and the electric impact. The easiest way to get it off is by a air impact or electric impact.
Great video thank you!!

i think they use plastic so if they break its less expensive than steel pulleys. Lots of plastic on many mowers and tractors now
I just realized my mower still drives even though the deck belt won’t engage. Any other suggestions before I do an unneeded repair on the drive belt ?
It sounds like You have a mower deck drive belt issue not a transmission drive belt issue.
@@JohnsonsSmallEnginesthanks! You were correct and now it’s time for me to change both belts. I can hear the pulleys making horrible noises. Lucky I was able to drive it to my garage. I’ve come back to watch over and over again in preparation.
Can you show how you hoist? What lift points do you use?
I’m no longer in that shop and I had a contractor put the support in my shop. It is covered by a ceiling.
@@JohnsonsSmallEngines I have a chain hoist in my shop. I meant where on the front of the tractor do you lift from?
Thanks. Your vids have helped me out of many a jam

do you have links for the replacement parts?
I suggest taking your model and serial number off of your machine and contacting a John Deere dealership to make sure you get the correct parts for your machine.
@@JohnsonsSmallEngines Yeah i have a john deere x340 with the 54inch deck. The parts i found a visually similar to yours just wanted to compare your parts number with the ones i found on amazon

I need to see you change a drive belt on a Kubota T2290kw they say it’s impossible.
Just had my drive belt and 2 pulleys replaced because of the same issue after 143 hrs. on the machine. Is this a design flaw? Is there a way to lube these pulleys?
The bearings are non grease able. Do you wash your tractor? If you do? Stop or if the machine sits in moist conditions, not good.
@@JohnsonsSmallEngines Thanks, Yep I wash the X330, spent 35 years in the Fire Department washing things. It's the leaf blower from now on to keep it clean. Thanks again. HTP
