I gotta agree that I love Laura's exotic gear. But it always boggled my mind why her alt "Bonita" costume was used during the wrestling cutscene. A girl with her cheeks & chi chi's dangling out doesn't seem to practical for a wrestling match.
Honestly, I'm okay with Laura's personality for very personal reasons. I'm not exaggerating when I say I have a sister EXACTLY like her. And she wasn't really stupid, just a bit lacking in the maturity department. She too tends to not tell people where she's going, and isn't too eloquent when talking. She might've not been a martial arts master but she was one hell of an athlete from youth up into college. I also tended to be the more mature out of both of us despite being the younger sibling. Basically, I like Laura because she's like my sister except a martial artist and with a larger cleavage.
just one little thing about Laura using onomatopoeias so much is that it's kind of a Brazilian thing. We do like our noises in our phrases. As for the rest, it's kind of disappointing to see another Brazilian character be used for nothing serious. There's already not many of them, with some not even showing their faces in canon, like Fábio, Laura's and Sean's older brother, but having only one of them doing anything serious at all in the franchise and then seeing him get sidelined as a damsel in distress in SFV is pretty sad. Also, is it me or is there a stereotype in Street Fighter about Brazilians being idiots most of the time? Blanka certainly isn't helping and Sean, the exception, gets the shaft most of the time. Okay, if our political situation is anything to go by, yeah, most of us aren't the brightest but geez, we're not that stupid

Hawk was weird and have nothing mexican, Blanka is an animal without character, El fuerte was really cool on his moves but his personallity was like a japanese seeing a latino for the first time and only thinking that he is loud xD, Sean was a black american teen... but Laura!!! She is joyful, loves her family over everything else, picks fights for nothing, makes noises (like people from Brazil told you) because latinos are like that xD, we talk about a fight and we are like "he punched the guy and hit the floor like POW!! and then he was like wiii because he was dizzy"... if you talk with some latina your chances are 90% sure that you will find a Laura xD

Love the content bro. Capcom should really make you the official story historian and writer for the franchise. There is no reason that Streetfighter with its illustrious history should be out done by Netherealms Injustice game as far as story.
To be fair Injustice has 70 something years or over of iconic characters to work with so it has a bit of an advantage there so they probably don't have to work as hard.

Are you kidding. Comparing to the universe that NRS created to what Tekken, Streetfighter and KoF ended up with, they are vastly better. Tekken's creator even came out and said how he was shook by the cohesiveness and detail to something that was a second thought and throw away to most. Which says a lot being that Tekken had the best potential story wise.

I have to agree. Laura has become one of my favorite Street Fighter characters, but beyond her looks, fighting style and positive attitude she doesn't have much to really offer. I'm honestly afraid that SFV will be her only game. I hope if they bring her back they mature her a bit. Especially if the next game takes place after SF3 (which I hope it does).
How could Capcom drop the ball on such a delcious character - all they had to do was put in some effort into her story and dialogue and she would've EASILY been a top favorite - but no...thanks, Capcom...
Maybe I’m wrong but I think the reason Laurie is promoting her Ji- jitsu style by showing it off in hope of it becoming the greatest martial artist in the world is because that’s exactly what Royce Gracie did granted the Graces started a tourney to show off Ji-jitsu against different styles not travel around the world but I think it’s an amazing homage to one of the most influential moments in martial art history
I must say, as a brazilian, I'm really sad that this is the character that represents us in sfv, not only because of her extremely fan service looks, but also because of her shallow lore. And a I can't stad her personallity, omg, makes me want to rip my ears of everytime she starts speaking. Of course, this is just my opinion. Edit: As a side note, if you want my opinion of a good character that represent us brazilians, it's lucio from overwatch, I absolutly love that guy, he's so cheerful and fun, his outfit is very reminiscent of what people actually wear here, with a OW twist of course, and even his motif is very "brazilian", using music to buff others, it's so much fun! And let's us not forget his backstory, that even tought was not very explored is pretty good, very in touch with the people that knows or lives the reality of the favelas here.
@@RikXtreme4 I think it's more a matter of perspective. I think the guile, sakura, etc cases are more like meant to be exaggerations of stereotypes, like the American soldier or the japanese idol. The thing with Laura is that she kinda of doesn't represent anything from Brazil, unless you count "busty women" as representing Brazil... which contrary to a super soldier or a idol I would say is pretty bad. Being honest, if it was to have such a shallow and, imo, bad character I would rather that there was no Brazilian character in sfv. So no, I'm not grateful that a character from my home is in the game, not when they are... this thing. But it's not that big of a deal, it's not as I'm offended or anything by her, I just think it's sad, specially when we have such better examples is Brazilian characters out there, like Lucio, or even eddy Gordo from tekken.
Well let's hope we get Sean in the game. As far as back stories I think he represents Brazil well. A teenager with wide eyed ambitions who dedicates his time to working hard at becoming the best even if he isn't ready yet is a far more positive role model if that's what you're looking for.
lol that's a lie. Balrog, Bison, Chun, Ken, Cammy, Juri, Karin, Sakura, etc all had tremendous character development from previous games to where they stand now.
This is exactly why I turned down their offer to have me in Ad Fighter V. The role they wanted me to play just doesn't fit my personality. That weird actor they hired to play the role of younger me did a terrible job and made me feel justified in turning them down. I've been working hard and getting better every day, and really want an opportunity to show off my progress, but not if it involves them limiting me to one or two of my moves so they can sell me dressing in chewbacca costumes. I guess I'll just stick around on the amateur circuit until Capcom gets their crap together 乁 ˘ o ˘ ㄏ

Here's the way I see it: Laura is the one that best exemplifies your ideal Visual Design. All the right colors, all the right accents. For all intents and purposes, she's perfect in your eyes...in VISUAL DESIGN ALONE. Sean, on the other hand, is the Personality and Importance that Laura lacks. No, not the Sean in SFV; I'm talking about the headstrong go-getter; the Shoto that's not a master, but holy hell is he working his ass off to be one. Also, while his importance in the SF Universe is to symbolize the passing of time in the mainstay crew, he also represents the heart and soul of Street Fighter; living for the fight, never letting defeat get you down, that you may lose TODAY, but you can win tomorrow. I, too, wanted to play as Sean in SFV and was saddened by Laura taking his spot, but after viewing this, I can see how these siblings can be in this universe. Oh well, here's hoping they give Laura a little more Personality and Importance...because after all, she's not mentioned in SFIII (even though it's a game back in 1997).

I do what I do because that is my character, and I don't let it bother me that for every one person like you that actually gets it there are a million haters that don't understand how hard Sensei Masters worked to get to the level he is at. I would still be sitting on some steps, fumbling with my Tiger Electronic handheld and trying not to get bullied right now if I actually listened to what they said. It's actually super fitting she goes around promoting her style of Jiu Jitsu, because the Gracie's, the Family that are known as the creators of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Were notorious for going around the world Challenging any and all other styles of martial arts. Señor White Face that would've been a good storyline for laura if it was fleshed out, but I think it would've been better in the 90s, when the gracies were really active in mma.
i had an idea of what lauras character motivation could have been. since sean was our previous foundation for a "Matsuda" i think laura's backstory should have played off the information we already know about Sean, and the biggest thing we know about sean is that he looks up to and wants to be like ken masters. Now imagine this; Laura is trying to lead and promote her family's dojo, her whole family is involved except for one person. Sean. I think an older sister trying to get her brother to recognize her and get him to take Matsuda jiujitsu seriously would be a nice connection between the two, besides just relentlessly teasing him all the time (though its something siblings do but its the only interaction laura has with her brother in sfv). That motivation would make sense to why she travels around fighting people so she can gain notoriety and impress her brother. I think Sean would be impressed if he saw his Sister 1 Vs 2 R Mika and Zangeif on live tv(the scene from the sfv story), maybe asking ryu for guidance on how to get her brother to recognize martial arts similar to the advice he gave sakura. maybe instead of going to shadaloo for the hell of it what if her motivation was that she would hope sean would see her as a superhero if we helped save the world from shadaloo, fighting karin for the latest game console so she can bribe sean into doing more martial arts, the list can go on and on if you try to related her encounters with other character to her brother. Missed opportunity but there is still room for her to grow character wise

Based the way her brother is on sf3. I would not be surprised if we do see her grow as they bring back sf iii back to the universe. Let's not forget as long as gil or urine are in the timeline, I expect her story to grow, Sean too.. my question would be why no Alex or Gil? Maybe the plot thickens?? I don't believe it took me this long to watch the video about this character from my own country, haha! I think it was a good analysis, very fair. I also see many people in the comments discussing the habit of adding sounds when talking and how that's normal in Brazil / Latin America. It's kind of true, sometimes we do, we even joke by making the person repeat the sound so we laugh at it. But the way Laura does it doesn't feel the most natural. Reminds me, indeed, of Japanese anime characters that are labeled as childish for their age. She doesn't need to be a femme fatale to sound like an adult, Brazilian women like her would be definitely more playful and light-hearted than, say, Bayonetta, but something's off. Maybe it's just how Japanese stereotypes work. Anyway, great video!!
I LOVE that hair style what is it called? I've been calling it a half fade. I also love her mid drift and the abdominal definition around her hip. Or as I like to call it "The Pelvic V" That is one of my MANY things.
She's a physically strong character and I like the colour motif but she needs character development (and nobody make the obvious joke about "development"). Though, I'm not trying to be unkind to her character for what it is.
A fanservice-looking character is well designed where even if you don't get anything sexual out of it, it's still a great design. I don't like fanservice in fighting games, but I really like Laura's design anyway thanks to the well done colour scheme. To be honest, on the subject of onomatopoeias, Ive read a few comments saying its accurate and I gotta back that up but more so that its a bit of a spanish/latin/ people further south thing. I'm Mex/Salvi mix and to be honest I do the onomatopoeias as well as the fact that my family has several "Laura"s in it. Also, the flirty nature i would like to say is a staple that is found to be rather common for both men and woman. To be honest even further, and this might sound rather strange, but she seemed a bit tame to me. An odd thought to be sure.
Yeah..... She doesn't have much importance. But she's fun. And that's all I need in a character. How much I enjoy seeing them on screen. Though I get what you're saying about her childishness, she could still be fun loving without being childish. Maybe her current personality around Sean only but be a tad more mature around others
This might be controversial, but I hate when the character I want to return gets sidelined for sex appeal. Same thing happened with Bruce Irvin for Josie Rizal. I wanted Sean, not boobs. Not to mention it screws up Sean's backstory. Sean wants to be a martial artist and goes under Ken's tutaledge, but was already related to martial artists that he could've learned from. What!?
Actually I can see how you'd think this at a glance. But it actually adds more depth to Sean's character. There's an UDON story called 'Sibling Rivalry' in one of the Street Fighter comics. Sean is shown to be the best Jujitsu fighter in brazil - *under* Laura. He wants to get out from under her shadow because apparently their grandfather has taught them both extensively but Laura has constantly one-upped him in the style. She actually informs him during their clash in the finals that he's too rigid, too 'textbook' on MJJ and the reason that she keeps beating him is because she's added her own flair to the martial art. She's made it her _own._ She defeats Sean and takes the championship because of that. Sean is mad salty about it, but then he gets a revelation when seeing Ken fight on the TV in the break room. It's at that point he determines he can probably beat his sister if he learns 'Ken Masters' style. I actually LOVE this story because it ties in *beautifully* with how Sean puts his own spin and flair on ansatsuken in the 3 series. We can imagine now that Sean started doing this, because Laura taught him a vital lesson about making your martial art your own. It's kind of funny. We never really say this outwardly but...Laura has actually given a LOT more context for Sean and his motivations. It's almost like at this point, she's basically the supporting character in _his_ story.

Our grandfather was on another level, but in reality she is the one that is too rigid and relies on using her physical appearance as a distraction to make it work. I have hobbies, like playing ball at the park and video games, that aren't martial arts. My sister really has nothing else, and I didn't want to take that away from her, because that would pretty much destroy her on account of her shallow and dimensionless personality. I decided to study under Sensei Masters because he is a deep reservoir of knowledge and a stand-up guy. Not all of the lessons I have learned from him are martial arts related, but I definitely didn't work so hard to have him take me on so I could copy his style verbatim. Sean ain't no pallette swap, bro. I do my own thing and make it work, even if making it work takes a lot more work…
On her personality I agree that not informing friends/family about your location is stupid but the rest I don't agree. It's not like Laura is acting like she's 6-10 yrs old.

When I first saw her, I was interested as i found her hot and was hoping there would be more to her. Sex appeal is good and I like it in a character but when that’s all a character has, I lose interest and it’s the case for Laura. She’s nothing but sex appeal and That sucks. Seriously, she just assumes Ken is mugging her brother with no real proof and attacks him. I don’t mind dumb characters, Hugo is in my top 3 fav SF characters. But you have to have other redeeming qualities to balance out the characters weaknesses. Laura literally has nothing going for her. Oh she cares about her family’s martial arts? Makoto does too and she already exists and does that schtick better. Hybrid grapplers also already exist. She’s also the 4th character in the games to use electricity so that’s not unique to her. She’s part of 5’s newcomers that I think Capcom completely failed at doing, along with Necalli, Ed, Falke, etc. 5’s only good characters are G, Zeku, Menat, and FANG.

It's boring if every dude looks the same. Uses poison in his attacks. Is Bison's only loyal follower. And he's a goofy character which we don't have much of. That's more than Laura brings to the table by far. He's objectively interesting and people only hate him because he's weird and not another typical buff dude. Just cuz you can't play charge characters doesn't mean he's bad. You could also say Laura's annoying. She's only sexy when she doesn't speak. If playing her to beat people with mix ups is all she has going for her, that's pretty sad lmao. No wonder people call her a robbery character. I'd rather have her brother Sean back honestly. Way better character. You like Laura because of her mix ups and that she's sexy. Plenty of characters have mix up potential in their movesets and every female character in the franchise is sexy. She has nothing going for her in particular.

I feel this so much man. She’s my main, I too loved her intro trailer, third strike connection and yea she’s hot. Turns out she is fun to play but her “character”, personality and place in the franchise is almost laughably weak and it does disappoint me. All I will say is. Dear god make Laura figures Capcom, I won’t ask for anything else. Though I’d love to see her improved on in future media but like you I doubt it.

In the history part you should have mentioned that it's implied she's half Japanese half Brazilian. Maybe the dad is Japanese since the family name is Matsuda and the mom is a black Brazilian as you can see by Sean (which should have been spelled differently because of Brazilian's "way of spelling" names...) and his skin tone and dreads.
You got it right. My dad is Japanese and our mom is as you said as well. My name is spelled the way it is because my Japanese dad was the one that chose it. And believe me, I know what you mean. I've had to deal with people asking me about the weird spelling of my name my entire life! Once I got older, I have started to appreciate it a little more, because non-brasilians don't try to call me Shōn!
You know I've always gotten personally triggered when people try to tell me that Laura is a better character than Sean. And you nailed exactly what I tell them and why I can't love her more than MY BOI. People tend to make excuses for her JUST for the sex appeal alone. And hell...like you stated, it's no denying that's there. She's very attractive visually and in animation and design. But the way her personality was handled was POOR. She had a great base to be one of the greater SF characters but it was wasted in story and lore in favor of eye candy. And that's why she doesn't eclipse Sean. She's NOT as relatable or as engaging of a character as he is...and honestly I'd love to see Laura come back in later games? But just bring Sean back too. People need to jump off this wagon of saying that she can replace him because she's straight up better. But awesome job Digi. I was scared at first that you were just gonna sing her praises like many other people I've talked to have and just ignore the faults. But you told it like it straight up is. Respect, man. I agree that characters shouldn’t be shamed for being fan service characters meant to appeal to the taste of particular gamers, but there is a double standard, as you’ll never see a playable female character with a body type similar to Birdie, Rufus, or Bob from Tekken, especially in a mainstream Fighter, and if they were, I’d be surprised if they were anything more than a shameless fat joke with no self-esteem or confidence. Which is a shame, cuz I think there is potential there for a confident plus-sized female character (and I mean truly plus size, not R. Mika being slightly thicc-er than the other women); think Bai Ya Shan from Crying Freeman. But of course, if such a character were brought in at this point and time, she probably would be decried as catering to the “SJW crowd”. And this is why we can’t have nice things for everyone.
Sem Nome I’m not sure of authorial intent with Bai Ya Shan, but she’s played surprisingly straight for a character of her type. She has a few jokes about her weight, and she does go into battle naked because her opponents would find her disgusting, but that’s a tactical advantage on her part, and there are times where she is naked and not called disgusting by those around her. Yeah, she could have been better, but a character of her type back then as well as now are so few and far between. Good call on Mary Ivonskaya from Tobal (I never played the game myself but I knew of it), but Tobal was not a mainstream game and would have been niche even in its own time. And she’s a very rare exception that proves the rule (as much as I loathe to use that expression).

I've seen Laura before on my Twitter feed sometimes, but I was NOT prepared for her voice in this video. That's an oof from me, dog. Also, while I like her martial arts look, her casual outfit is so absurdly sexed up that it looks ridiculous and unappealing, so of course that's what she wears in the story. Laura also seems to be an unfortunate symptom of Capcom passing up popular characters in order to introduce half-baked new ones in Street Fighter V. RIP Sean and everyone else who was ignored.

I gotta agree that I love Laura's exotic gear. But it always boggled my mind why her alt "Bonita" costume was used during the wrestling cutscene. A girl with her cheeks & chi chi's dangling out doesn't seem to practical for a wrestling match.
To be fair R.Mika makes it work.

Honestly, I'm okay with Laura's personality for very personal reasons. I'm not exaggerating when I say I have a sister EXACTLY like her. And she wasn't really stupid, just a bit lacking in the maturity department. She too tends to not tell people where she's going, and isn't too eloquent when talking. She might've not been a martial arts master but she was one hell of an athlete from youth up into college. I also tended to be the more mature out of both of us despite being the younger sibling. Basically, I like Laura because she's like my sister except a martial artist and with a larger cleavage.

just one little thing about Laura using onomatopoeias so much is that it's kind of a Brazilian thing. We do like our noises in our phrases.
As for the rest, it's kind of disappointing to see another Brazilian character be used for nothing serious. There's already not many of them, with some not even showing their faces in canon, like Fábio, Laura's and Sean's older brother, but having only one of them doing anything serious at all in the franchise and then seeing him get sidelined as a damsel in distress in SFV is pretty sad. Also, is it me or is there a stereotype in Street Fighter about Brazilians being idiots most of the time? Blanka certainly isn't helping and Sean, the exception, gets the shaft most of the time. Okay, if our political situation is anything to go by, yeah, most of us aren't the brightest but geez, we're not that stupid

Yeah it's really annoying that she's pretty much just an attractive lamp hell you wouldn't even need to change her personality too much to make her interesting just make her a fun thrill seeker whose still a little ditzy but not super childish and bam much better

As a Latino (Mexican) i feel that Laura is the first latino character that acts like one... T. Hawk was weird and have nothing mexican, Blanka is an animal without character, El fuerte was really cool on his moves but his personallity was like a japanese seeing a latino for the first time and only thinking that he is loud xD, Sean was a black american teen... but Laura!!! She is joyful, loves her family over everything else, picks fights for nothing, makes noises (like people from Brazil told you) because latinos are like that xD, we talk about a fight and we are like "he punched the guy and hit the floor like POW!! and then he was like wiii because he was dizzy"... if you talk with some latina your chances are 90% sure that you will find a Laura xD

Love the content bro. Capcom should really make you the official story historian and writer for the franchise. There is no reason that Streetfighter with its illustrious history should be out done by Netherealms Injustice game as far as story.
To be fair Injustice has 70 something years or over of iconic characters to work with so it has a bit of an advantage there so they probably don't have to work as hard.

I would agree with you. As good as the comic is, and as a game concept, those slip ups gave the universe and the tale a black eye. But Injustice still goes hard.
Are you kidding. Comparing to the universe that NRS created to what Tekken, Streetfighter and KoF ended up with, they are vastly better. Tekken's creator even came out and said how he was shook by the cohesiveness and detail to something that was a second thought and throw away to most. Which says a lot being that Tekken had the best potential story wise.

I have to agree. Laura has become one of my favorite Street Fighter characters, but beyond her looks, fighting style and positive attitude she doesn't have much to really offer. I'm honestly afraid that SFV will be her only game. I hope if they bring her back they mature her a bit. Especially if the next game takes place after SF3 (which I hope it does).

jitsu style by showing it off in hope of it becoming the greatest martial artist in the world is because that’s exactly what Royce Gracie did granted the Graces started a tourney to show off Ji-jitsu against different styles not travel around the world but I think it’s an amazing homage to one of the most influential moments in martial art history

I must say, as a brazilian, I'm really sad that this is the character that represents us in sfv, not only because of her extremely fan service looks, but also because of her shallow lore. And a I can't stad her personallity, omg, makes me want to rip my ears of everytime she starts speaking.
Of course, this is just my opinion.
Edit: As a side note, if you want my opinion of a good character that represent us brazilians, it's lucio from overwatch, I absolutly love that guy, he's so cheerful and fun, his outfit is very reminiscent of what people actually wear here, with a OW twist of course, and even his motif is very "brazilian", using music to buff others, it's so much fun! And let's us not forget his backstory, that even tought was not very explored is pretty good, very in touch with the people that knows or lives the reality of the favelas here.

@@RikXtreme4 I think it's more a matter of perspective. I think the guile, sakura, etc cases are more like meant to be exaggerations of stereotypes, like the American soldier or the japanese idol.
The thing with Laura is that she kinda of doesn't represent anything from Brazil, unless you count "busty women" as representing Brazil... which contrary to a super soldier or a idol I would say is pretty bad.
Being honest, if it was to have such a shallow and, imo, bad character I would rather that there was no Brazilian character in sfv. So no, I'm not grateful that a character from my home is in the game, not when they are... this thing.
But it's not that big of a deal, it's not as I'm offended or anything by her, I just think it's sad, specially when we have such better examples is Brazilian characters out there, like Lucio, or even eddy Gordo from tekken.
Well let's hope we get Sean in the game. As far as back stories I think he represents Brazil well. A teenager with wide eyed ambitions who dedicates his time to working hard at becoming the best even if he isn't ready yet is a far more positive role model if that's what you're looking for.

This is exactly why I turned down their offer to have me in Ad Fighter V. The role they wanted me to play just doesn't fit my personality. That weird actor they hired to play the role of younger me did a terrible job and made me feel justified in turning them down. I've been working hard and getting better every day, and really want an opportunity to show off my progress, but not if it involves them limiting me to one or two of my moves so they can sell me dressing in chewbacca costumes. I guess I'll just stick around on the amateur circuit until Capcom gets their crap together 乁 ˘ o ˘ ㄏ

Here's the way I see it:
Laura is the one that best exemplifies your ideal Visual Design. All the right colors, all the right accents. For all intents and purposes, she's perfect in your eyes...in VISUAL DESIGN ALONE.
Sean, on the other hand, is the Personality and Importance that Laura lacks. No, not the Sean in SFV; I'm talking about the headstrong go-getter; the Shoto that's not a master, but holy hell is he working his ass off to be one. Also, while his importance in the SF Universe is to symbolize the passing of time in the mainstay crew, he also represents the heart and soul of Street Fighter; living for the fight, never letting defeat get you down, that you may lose TODAY, but you can win tomorrow.
I, too, wanted to play as Sean in SFV and was saddened by Laura taking his spot, but after viewing this, I can see how these siblings can be in this universe. Oh well, here's hoping they give Laura a little more Personality and Importance...because after all, she's not mentioned in SFIII (even though it's a game back in 1997).
As for the backstory...it makes Big The Cat's backstory like the LoTR trilogy...damn.

Thank you for the support! I do what I do because that is my character, and I don't let it bother me that for every one person like you that actually gets it there are a million haters that don't understand how hard Sensei Masters worked to get to the level he is at. I would still be sitting on some steps, fumbling with my Tiger Electronic handheld and trying not to get bullied right now if I actually listened to what they said.
That said, vindication is always nice. I'm looking forward to the opportunity to enter the upcoming 6th tournament (assuming my sister does as well). Once and for all, I'd like to show her how predictable and shoddy her garbage style (that she attributes to our last name without my consent) is when her opponent is paying attention to her actions instead of the actions of her chest!

It's actually super fitting she goes around promoting her style of Jiu Jitsu, because the Gracie's, the Family that are known as the creators of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Were notorious for going around the world Challenging any and all other styles of martial arts. While Selling BJJ to the people they beat the whole time.
Señor White Face that would've been a good storyline for laura if it was fleshed out, but I think it would've been better in the 90s, when the gracies were really active in mma.
She's not my favorite SFV newcomer, but I'm generally cool with her being around. Still prefer Sean, though.

i had an idea of what lauras character motivation could have been. since sean was our previous foundation for a "Matsuda" i think laura's backstory should have played off the information we already know about Sean, and the biggest thing we know about sean is that he looks up to and wants to be like ken masters. Now imagine this; Laura is trying to lead and promote her family's dojo, her whole family is involved except for one person. Sean.
I think an older sister trying to get her brother to recognize her and get him to take Matsuda jiujitsu seriously would be a nice connection between the two, besides just relentlessly teasing him all the time (though its something siblings do but its the only interaction laura has with her brother in sfv). That motivation would make sense to why she travels around fighting people so she can gain notoriety and impress her brother. I think Sean would be impressed if he saw his Sister 1 Vs 2 R Mika and Zangeif on live tv(the scene from the sfv story), maybe asking ryu for guidance on how to get her brother to recognize martial arts similar to the advice he gave sakura. maybe instead of going to shadaloo for the hell of it what if her motivation was that she would hope sean would see her as a superhero if we helped save the world from shadaloo, fighting karin for the latest game console so she can bribe sean into doing more martial arts, the list can go on and on if you try to related her encounters with other character to her brother. Missed opportunity but there is still room for her to grow character wise

Let's not forget as long as gil or urine are in the timeline, I expect her story to grow, Sean too.. my question would be why no Alex or Gil? Maybe the plot thickens?? Or is it that that is the point.. Maybe she is just the medium to understand how Sean met Ken and began training in sf iii...

I don't believe it took me this long to watch the video about this character from my own country, haha! I think it was a good analysis, very fair.
I also see many people in the comments discussing the habit of adding sounds when talking and how that's normal in Brazil / Latin America. It's kind of true, sometimes we do, we even joke by making the person repeat the sound so we laugh at it. But the way Laura does it doesn't feel the most natural. Reminds me, indeed, of Japanese anime characters that are labeled as childish for their age. She doesn't need to be a femme fatale to sound like an adult, Brazilian women like her would be definitely more playful and light-hearted than, say, Bayonetta, but something's off. Maybe it's just how Japanese stereotypes work.

She's a physically strong character and I like the colour motif but she needs character development (and nobody make the obvious joke about "development"). Though, I'm not trying to be unkind to her character for what it is.

A fanservice-looking character is well designed where even if you don't get anything sexual out of it, it's still a great design. I don't like fanservice in fighting games, but I really like Laura's design anyway thanks to the well done colour scheme. To be honest, on the subject of onomatopoeias, Ive read a few comments saying its accurate and I gotta back that up but more so that its a bit of a spanish/latin/ people further south thing. I'm Mex/Salvi mix and to be honest I do the onomatopoeias as well as the fact that my family has several "Laura"s in it. Also, the flirty nature i would like to say is a staple that is found to be rather common for both men and woman. To be honest even further, and this might sound rather strange, but she seemed a bit tame to me. An odd thought to be sure.

This might be controversial, but I hate when the character I want to return gets sidelined for sex appeal. Same thing happened with Bruce Irvin for Josie Rizal. I wanted Sean, not boobs.
Not to mention it screws up Sean's backstory. Sean wants to be a martial artist and goes under Ken's tutaledge, but was already related to martial artists that he could've learned from. What!?
Actually I can see how you'd think this at a glance. But it actually adds more depth to Sean's character.
There's an UDON story called 'Sibling Rivalry' in one of the Street Fighter comics. Sean is shown to be the best Jujitsu fighter in brazil - *under* Laura. He wants to get out from under her shadow because apparently their grandfather has taught them both extensively but Laura has constantly one-upped him in the style. She actually informs him during their clash in the finals that he's too rigid, too 'textbook' on MJJ and the reason that she keeps beating him is because she's added her own flair to the martial art. She's made it her _own._ She defeats Sean and takes the championship because of that. Sean is mad salty about it, but then he gets a revelation when seeing Ken fight on the TV in the break room. It's at that point he determines he can probably beat his sister if he learns 'Ken Masters' style. I actually LOVE this story because it ties in *beautifully* with how Sean puts his own spin and flair on ansatsuken in the 3 series. We can imagine now that Sean started doing this, because Laura taught him a vital lesson about making your martial art your own.
It's kind of funny. We never really say this outwardly but...Laura has actually given a LOT more context for Sean and his motivations. It's almost like at this point, she's basically the supporting character in _his_ story.

Our grandfather was on another level, but in reality she is the one that is too rigid and relies on using her physical appearance as a distraction to make it work. I have hobbies, like playing ball at the park and video games, that aren't martial arts. My sister really has nothing else, and I didn't want to take that away from her, because that would pretty much destroy her on account of her shallow and dimensionless personality.
I decided to study under Sensei Masters because he is a deep reservoir of knowledge and a stand-up guy. Not all of the lessons I have learned from him are martial arts related, but I definitely didn't work so hard to have him take me on so I could copy his style verbatim. Sean ain't no pallette swap, bro.
I do my own thing and make it work, even if making it work takes a lot more work…

Sex appeal is good and I like it in a character but when that’s all a character has, I lose interest and it’s the case for Laura. She’s nothing but sex appeal and That sucks.
Seriously, she just assumes Ken is mugging her brother with no real proof and attacks him. I don’t mind dumb characters, Hugo is in my top 3 fav SF characters. But you have to have other redeeming qualities to balance out the characters weaknesses. Laura literally has nothing going for her.
Oh she cares about her family’s martial arts? Makoto does too and she already exists and does that schtick better.
Hybrid grapplers also already exist. She’s also the 4th character in the games to use electricity so that’s not unique to her.
She’s part of 5’s newcomers that I think Capcom completely failed at doing, along with Necalli, Ed, Falke, etc. 5’s only good characters are G, Zeku, Menat, and FANG.

Uses poison in his attacks. Is Bison's only loyal follower. And he's a goofy character which we don't have much of. That's more than Laura brings to the table by far.
He's objectively interesting and people only hate him because he's weird and not another typical buff dude.

I'd rather have her brother Sean back honestly. Way better character. You like Laura because of her mix ups and that she's sexy. Plenty of characters have mix up potential in their movesets and every female character in the franchise is sexy. She has nothing going for her in particular.
I feel like I notice more and more details of Street Fighter 5 being half-assed the more I think about it. Can't wait to see Necalli, he had/has potential.

I feel this so much man. She’s my main, I too loved her intro trailer, third strike connection and yea she’s hot. Turns out she is fun to play but her “character”, personality and place in the franchise is almost laughably weak and it does disappoint me. All I will say is. Dear god make Laura figures Capcom, I won’t ask for anything else.
Though I’d love to see her improved on in future media but like you I doubt it.

Maybe the dad is Japanese since the family name is Matsuda and the mom is a black Brazilian as you can see by Sean (which should have been spelled differently because of Brazilian's "way of spelling" names...) and his skin tone and dreads.
You got it right. My dad is Japanese and our mom is as you said as well. My name is spelled the way it is because my Japanese dad was the one that chose it. And believe me, I know what you mean. I've had to deal with people asking me about the weird spelling of my name my entire life! Once I got older, I have started to appreciate it a little more, because non-brasilians don't try to call me Shōn!

You know I've always gotten personally triggered when people try to tell me that Laura is a better character than Sean. And you nailed exactly what I tell them and why I can't love her more than MY BOI.
People tend to make excuses for her JUST for the sex appeal alone. And hell...like you stated, it's no denying that's there. She's very attractive visually and in animation and design. But the way her personality was handled was POOR. She had a great base to be one of the greater SF characters but it was wasted in story and lore in favor of eye candy. And that's why she doesn't eclipse Sean. She's NOT as relatable or as engaging of a character as he is...and honestly I'd love to see Laura come back in later games? But just bring Sean back too. People need to jump off this wagon of saying that she can replace him because she's straight up better.

I agree that characters shouldn’t be shamed for being fan service characters meant to appeal to the taste of particular gamers, but there is a double standard, as you’ll never see a playable female character with a body type similar to Birdie, Rufus, or Bob from Tekken, especially in a mainstream Fighter, and if they were, I’d be surprised if they were anything more than a shameless fat joke with no self-esteem or confidence. Which is a shame, cuz I think there is potential there for a confident plus-sized female character (and I mean truly plus size, not R. Mika being slightly thicc-er than the other women); think Bai Ya Shan from Crying Freeman. But of course, if such a character were brought in at this point and time, she probably would be decried as catering to the “SJW crowd”. And this is why we can’t have nice things for everyone.
Well, that character in Crying Freeman is a joke (fetish?) char too. And we have a fat girl in Tobal 1...
Sem Nome I’m not sure of authorial intent with Bai Ya Shan, but she’s played surprisingly straight for a character of her type. She has a few jokes about her weight, and she does go into battle naked because her opponents would find her disgusting, but that’s a tactical advantage on her part, and there are times where she is naked and not called disgusting by those around her. Yeah, she could have been better, but a character of her type back then as well as now are so few and far between.
Good call on Mary Ivonskaya from Tobal (I never played the game myself but I knew of it), but Tobal was not a mainstream game and would have been niche even in its own time. And she’s a very rare exception that proves the rule (as much as I loathe to use that expression).

I've seen Laura before on my Twitter feed sometimes, but I was NOT prepared for her voice in this video. That's an oof from me, dog. Also, while I like her martial arts look, her casual outfit is so absurdly sexed up that it looks ridiculous and unappealing, so of course that's what she wears in the story. Laura also seems to be an unfortunate symptom of Capcom passing up popular characters in order to introduce half-baked new ones in Street Fighter V. RIP Sean and everyone else who was ignored.
