You Rock! The quick videos feel relaxed, fun & easy to follow, but still speckled with golden nuggets of informative tips to help really connect with the instrument, yourself & music. I am so grateful you put such effort and awesome info out!! I've had bongos for years, but never actually learned & only spuratically tinker bc of that, and that could have stayed the case for decades more. But I luckily found your vid 1st, and think it's going to help me from "wish I could" to finally enjoying the art & my free time more.
This is only the 2nd little lesson I've ever witnessed, but you make if very easy to learn! I had no idea how drum illiterate I was until I finally searched YT for a quick tutorial. Luckily you defined how to hold them, which is opposite of what I've done for years, so that's tough lol. But thanks to your tuning guide, I finally get to enjoy their sound(& my relationship with it) more properly. I had never been able to buy instruments until one year I lucked out a little & forced myself to take that leap & sprung for a set of gorgeous Congas & Bongos, stand, & limited ed. acoustic guitar, but the moving company I used in AZ to haul them to storage ripped me off, and I didn't know until almost a yr later when all I got back was my bongos. I was devastated, but now I can finally be that much more grateful that I've atleast held onto these and now will love them like it.
    Thank you so much!

On Ralph MacDonald's Jam on the Groove, the breakdown, is that a bango that he strikes with a stick? The sound also sort if pitch bends as if he's pressing down on the skin.

    Love your videos very helpful
I espessually like how in this one the video started right off the bat with the rythem being played
Somwtimes when practicing later on after having learned a rythem i just check back to these videos as a reminder so that nice so ya dont gotta skip through stuff on and find the rythem in that situation

Hi , thanks for the great videos, question, my left bongo(small one) has gone flat, by that I mean it sounds dead..how do I fix that. They are made by aspire Lp

Thanks, nice video, as always. Sticks have been used on bongos for a long time. Mongo used them, at times. And Roberto Roena used them a lot. Check out Ponte Duro by Fania All Stars in Zaire (1974?). Roberto has an extended solo with sticks on bongos, starting at about the 1'30" mark. This video supports your concern about sticks damaging the bearing edge. It looks like this set of bongos was dedicated to use with sticks, hahahaha. Often, Patato used a bell beater on congas. Thanks, again, Kalani, Alex

I’m getting 1e&a 2e&a/alternate strokes, with the Low drum hits on the a of 1… and the & of 2. Of course one has to get the tones & touches correct. (1e& on high drum…the a on low drum) then 2e on high drum with & on Low drum, then the a…/tap/left hand back on the high drum: Repeat…..

Hey that's great. Yes it is easier with the metronome. Can I suggest describing the "ghost tap" on the left hand be called a "bounce" once the tempo goes faster? I like the easy way you breakdown the beat to teach it, thanks!

How about that lesson with sticks on hand drums with a technique emphasis, in addition to the drum safety aspect. That sounds exciting! Thanks!

There's no need to buy a metronome. There's an app for that on the smart phone and the Internet. 😊
