Love this info Summer! I agree w/you about not changing the color on each row! I love how Flynnie wants cuddles from you while you're trying to explain everything to us. He loves his Momma❤️
Oh my, thank GOD! I am not the only one who does this color controlling. I will only do this if the color changes in the middle of a row, I will frog back and change the color from the beginning of a row. Which is basically what Summer has done! I Love the way she is not afraid to admit that not, everything goes right or isn't perfect. She has made me feel a little better about my mistakes and changing or adding to patterns to suit your own liking. It lets us know that even a big You Tuber like her still has had issues and it is normal. Thank you Summer!
you are so flattering! A 'big youtuber like me" hehe blush I would say sometimes I try to skip over and just keep going, and then a few rows later, I am like " I can't, I got to frog it back!" haha It works for me (and you) and that's what matters!
@@SummersTipsandStitches Thank you Summer! As a matter of fact I happen to love love love a shawl you made, its the Eriginea, shawl is that how you spell it? That is my current wip and I happen to have some mandala griffin so I am making my very own shawl!! Thanks again!
I used to have my daughter (in high school at the time) occasionally pop in while I was recording a "Let's Play" video; however, she was old enough to provide useful commentary on the game, so everything stayed on-topic. As to color controlling, about all I do is to try to have the beginning of a new ball start at the same point in the color sequence as the end of the old ball. (Bag-o-Day Crochet goes a bit farther; when she buys multiple cakes of the same colorway of a cake yarn, she tries to only pick cakes which start at the same point in the color sequence, so there's no break in the color sequence from cake to cake.) I will admit, however, that when I'm making a giant-granny-square baby blanket from Bernat Blanket/Baby Blanket, if I get to the end of a skein in the middle of a round, I usually unravel back to the beginning of the round, and use the leftover yarn together with the next ball in that color when I'm ready to do another stripe in that color. Have you tried Caron Pantone? It's not cheap, but the multiple colors in each package are already divided into separate mini-hanks, which sounds made for crafters who like to color-control.
I LOVE REAL LIFE videos way better than the perfect "Stepford Wives" videos lol Houses look like staged empty houses & makeup & wardrobe is unrealistic. Keep being YOU Summer. Love you & your videos. Much love ~Pam
See a lot of times I buy the color changing yarn simply for the fact that all the colors go nicely together and I love just seeing how they work up. I have color controlled couple of times but I find it more pleasing to just let it go. I figure if I'm going to do all that controlling anyway I would just buy the individual colors and save myself the headache. But that's why this world turns and that's why it's amazing because we're all different and do things differently and I do have to say all of your stuff comes out really beautiful.
A lot of folks have said to me, why don't you just buy the seperat yarn...you got the reason...I can't match colors up very well. I really struggle with the different tones...you know how some can have a red undertone or a grey undertone. I love the cakes because all the colors "go with" and most of the time I would never thing to put those colors together and they end up look gorgeous together.
We love watching Flynn in the video, we love him, so please don't left him out. I'm the one who goes alone with the flow on this mix color yarns. So if you don't want to mix you should buy separate color yarns.💓🌹🌼
I do the color controlling through out my Prayer Shawls. I try to begin and end with the same color. We attach fringe/ tassels on the short ends. I’ll be sure to control my strands so all the colors are in each tassel. My left overs I donate to a lady in my area who will crochet lapghans for Veterans in the Portland area. Ladies at the quilting class at our area will use yarn to tie the quilts 💜 love to donate where I can. I love when you say ‘Holy Toledo’! God bless
Thank you, Summer. I like your videos just the way they are. I like your kids popping in and out. Flynn looks like my son did at that age. He is now 36 yrs old. You’re going to miss them being little.
I love how you said that you end up with a bag of MANDALA PART'S! It took me back to my childhood. I used to watch my dad and my brother's working on their vehicle's. And for some reason when you said a bag of part's. ... I hag to laugh! Thank you for that. Lol! I just wanted to mention. ... that most, if not all yarn, usually tell you so many stitches make so many inches or cm's. That will give an idea on how far it will take you. Another thing is I like the way the self changing because, you won't have the knots at the change of the yarn. Even though, sometimes the skeins or cakes will have the knots already. Lol! I usually allow the yarn to change on it's own.... and some people will say "you changed in the middle of a row" or "you didn't change the color in time" Hahaha! So then I tell them that it's self changing yarn.... then they say "oh! Ok! Lol! It's funny sometimes to watch their faces when they noticed. Hahahaha! I wanted to thank you for all of your tips! You're doing a GREAT JOB! ♡♡♡♡♡♡♡
Hi Summer! Life sure does happen, doesn't it? That's something we can all relate to. Thank you for this video on color controlling. It seems like a lot of extra work, but I share your feelings about a color change in the middle of a row. Sometimes you don't mind it as much, but other times, you just don't want to see it. I'm going keep your instruction in mind for future endeavors. Thanks again!
Real life videos are the best...don't worry about it. We've all been through the family- schedule-everyone line up and take a number-please!!....scenario. Always enjoy your show and thanks for going to the extra effort.😉🌹

God bless you for the work and time you give to us out here.
Love the mom moments in this video! I just started making an afghan with Mandala. I haven’t decided on color controlling yet. I want the colors to flow in order from one skien to the next. The recipient is very OCD, so color controlling might be a good idea.
The only time I don't mind the sudden change is when I am doing a scrap aghan. Your a mom so it's expected to see children popping in and out, not a problem at all 👍👏👍👏
Hi Summer, I love watching you and your videos and I like that your kids pop in and out, makes it homey. I have a suggestion for your coaster from Z, put it in a frame and hang with the rest of your wall treasures. Thanks for all you do.
I have wondered how to do this. The changing in mid row would drive me nuts. I have purchased a few of these yarns but not used them because of this whole problem. I feel better that im not the only one with this thought. Your son is previous. Very quiet and you have great patience ❤❤👍
God bless you. The idea of self striping yarn is to not have to change colors and weave in ends. You might want to stick with plain skeins instead of self striping.
Love the great info as always. I'm making my first triangle shawl. I was not diggin' the color sequence of a bernat pop cake I had in my stash, so I separated all of the colors. Thanks to your advice I will use the balls of colors with the least amount first. Love seeing Flynn he's adorable. Have a blessed evening.
I have never colour controlled until I started Rosina’s (Zeen’s and Roger) Granny Cowl (& I’ve been crocheting since I was 7 - some 40 yrs ago) ... and oh my gosh, what fun I’ve had with it!! I think from here on in, I’m going to try my hand at both being relaxed about the colour changes and also colour controlling, let the fun begin!!
I’ve always color controlled my mandalas. I hate when the color changes in the middle of a row. That said I haven’t used a lot of the mandalas. Have a great week.
I agree with you about color changes mid-row, dislike :) and I do make smaller balls from the cakes. I use them as I would the Caron Pantone skeins. The remaining cut-end pieces are great for my small granny square projects! Great video Summer, thank you!!
I love them popping in and out of your videos! It is so sweet! I am not so OCD that I feel the need to color control on most of my projects, but I do organized my cakes to be in the same color order. I go through and re-wind and Frankenstein my bits together to keep the order and what is "taken out" I add it back in as I go. My hook mug is sitting on-ish my coaster. It is on my desk where I watch you guys and crochet. I need to get a PO Box as well. I am super intense on the safety stuff. My family doesn't care at all.... Take Care!!! OH! I film many videos at once... So I will have a string of videos where I look the same.
I'm so glad to know I'm in such good company with you as I also don't care for the look of color change mid row! Love how you explain ways around this too, and I was thinking to myself; why didn't I think of that!! Lol :) Keep your videos coming-real life, kids and all-keeping it real is what it's all about!!
I love the chaotic way your videos sometimes look! Your children are always so polite and well behaved. I look at people as you weather I would like to live next door to them! You and your family definitely fall into the yes camp xx
Hi Summer new in the last few weeks to your channel and happily subscribed. I love your way of explaining how to fix some of the issues that many of us have. I'm new to crocheting and wondered if you have a video on how to make the shawl that you were holding up to explain the color changing predicament...please let me know. My husband and I raised 4 girls and I remember sometimes thinking I would give anything for a few minutes alone...well now they are all married, with kids of their own and I have that time alone now and I Hate It ...so love your channel and the way you show your genuine love for your kids and they..you. Flynn will be grown with kids of his own as will your other children...enjoy every moment with your family...share your blessings...don't change a thing. Have a blessed week and I'm glad I found you.
I understand what you're saying. I finally finished the virus meets granny shawl last night with mandala and surprisingly each of my rows came out as 1 color. One row had a 2nd color at the end. really wish I could I add a picture to show you.
I do that also! I can't look at my daughter's scarf that I did NOT do this with, when Caron Cakes first came out. Lol. By the way, if you or anyone here wants something to do with the scraps, there is a charity called Warm Up America. They collect 7" × 9" rectangles for blankets (service groups can request boxes of rectangles, which they then sew together). I've started doing this when I want a break from current projects. (But your Frankengranny is also a great way to use scraps.)
Hi Summer. That's life as a mom with a hobby, right?!!! And you are such a mom!! I liked the video and thought that is was informative and charming with the little guy moving about. Didn't bother me one bit. Like you said, "You be you!.....and Flynn be Flynn! Don't change a thing. The family stuff is part of what makes your videos so enjoyable. Someone else commented that it's like visiting with you and I agree. It's like hanging out with you in your craft corner. Anyway, thanks for sharing about color control in projects and the why and how of it. I don't like weaving in my ends so I'm one to generally let it go, but if the pattern/project were to call for a more controlled color change then you gave me good info. Thanks again! Blessings XOXO Victoria
Thanks maillion Summer. This answered a lot of questions. I was wondering how you join your yarns. I love Flinn and you are so good with him. One of these days you want get him in a video for anything. Don't blink they grow up over night.
I remark that 2 cakes with the same serial number with the same colors but not place at the same place !! So, when we have two legs or arms, you absolutely control your colors!
Aren't the points of the cakes to get the beautiful fading gradient? If someone wants a their sections to be different colors without that fade why buy a cake? Isnt it easier to just buy separate skeins in the colors you want so you can control it? I'm trying to figure out how to make sure that subtle fading happens. Like the red heart stripes fade subtly in a scarf but not a blanket. Would I do the same thing? Grab two skeins so I can have longer fade sections? This was very helpful video I really appreciate it. Your son is very well behaved and sweet, loving on his momma.
Some have gradients (like mandala) and others have abrupt changes. It's really up to you. If you dont mind a color change in the middle row leave it. I personally like to buy the cakes because I love how creative they are at putting color combos together. A talent I do not have 😁
@@SummersTipsandStitches I definitely dont like it cutting off mid row. I never thought of using two skeins and doing what you're talking about to make sure I get enough of that fade color. They never put enough of that fade color in. Thank you for helping me solve this problem
I did a little color control with a sugar wheel because the change was really drastic but it was only about ten stitches in and yes I always save the ends to use as markers or the kids art project
I love how real your channel is. Don’t change a thing. I am getting tired of cakes but I have so many that I will be using them for a long time to come. Btw.... Zee didn’t get your address from me.
yeah, she said that she saw me flash my addres on the screen! haha I didn't know if she sent it to me, or if someone else bought one from her and had her send the little package to me! I need to be a bit more careful with flashing my address!haha
Hi Summer, I enjoy so much your videos and you. I'm so glad I found your channel. That was a great idea how you color control, I bet a lot of people never thought of that. You make your videos fun. Do you ever crochet a project while filming your video? Thank you for all you do. Love to see your kids. Lori Schreiner
Love that your kids pop in and out of the videos. I don’t mind the color changes in knitting but hate when they happen in crochet. I’m knitting a blanket with Caron Cakes right now and the color change is not super noticeable. When crocheting a blanket I rather buy the colors separately to make sure the change happens at the end of the row. Great video🙂.
Thank you for this color control video. I haven’t used a Caron cake or mandala yet. 😁. I personally don’t care for the abrupt halt in color and was planning to do something as you discussed. The pieces from your mandalas can be used for a bird nest for rescue leagues (going around on Facebook). You did a great job in the beginning with Flynn and his red guy. 😁
I understand what you're saying Summer, but I don't get why if someone is going to color control, why use Mandala. Instead just get your separate color skeins to begin with. To me the beauty of Mandala is the odd color changes. Hi Flynn!
The main reason is I have a hard time putting colors together. Sometimes I get caught up on the different shades are tones of colors and I liked that the Mandela cakes or caron cakes all come with colors that a perfectly match together.
@@SummersTipsandStitches using photos is good way to put colors together. I personally like Design Seeds because they give you a photo & a color swatch. Everyone has to use or do whatever works for them tho. I'm doing a waffle stitch shawl by Fiber Spider right now using a Mandala Spirit. It just turned from medium blue to navy 8 waffles from end of row. I had to giggle & think of you, lol! It would make my friend crazy too, but I love it.
I love how the varigated yarns work out.. I have zero patience to frog, and redo the rows, I just let it flow.. hahaa S U R P R I S E ! ! ! Totally forgot to include a little card, I'm so sorry. Nope, my fellow hookers did not send me your address. You are correct tho, you've flashed your address enough times, that I took that as a sign that I NEED to send ya a lil sum sum, hahaaaa Awwwww yay!!! LOVE YOU TOO FRIEND!! I think there is enough space to punch a little hole on the top and hang it up.. Score on that KNIT CRATE!!! Yeaaa baby! Everytime I see someone post their box, I'm tempted to restart, but then I remember... I got all the colors I said I didn't want and all the fingering or thick ass yarn, I said I didn't like.. When I reached out, they said they had no control. I'm sure that's true, but why ask me what colors I "don't want" and still send those colors 🤔🤔
Hi again, I’m sorry, I’m sure I’ve missed it in previous video but what pattern is your multi-triangle shawl! It looks so pretty and quite large! Thank you Summer!
I think you son likes looking at himself lol. I agree with you that the color changing mid row does look sloppy but I look at it this way, these cakes are the way of the future so everyone expects this to happen so it’s no big deal. I love your bag of “yarn parts”
Hi Ms ,j I saw that in something that I made . the color change happen in the middle of the roll. It did look like you mess up . Tks I know what to do what that 😊

Glad you released this video.....fabulous 💕💕💕💕💕
Great video. You are the most patient mom ever. I should have been more patient when my boys were younger.
Just wanted to add... Thus was a great, informative video... I love real life videos... Real is better than fake, any day... 💜
Good information. I especially found helpful was the information on the differences between the cakes. Hope you have a good week.💖
Some great tips! Thank you Summer!
Great information, ty for sharing.
Love the yarn from knitcrate and presents from Zee!
I love the chaotic way your videos sometimes look! Your children are always so polite and well behaved. I look at people as you weather I would like to live next door to them! You and your family definitely fall into the yes camp xx
Good tip about the triangle shawl and colors change, thanks
Yeh for real life. Another great video
Allo Summer!! Thx for the tips on how to do this...it didn't bother me before but now maybe i understand why i'm not selling my blankets...lol
Omg, he's soooo cute! ❤❤ thanks for the video, very helpful.
Flynn is fine ! No worries.
Nice video! I freak about the color change in the middle of the row also.
Thanks maillion Summer. This answered a lot of questions. I was wondering how you join your yarns.
I love Flinn and you are so good with him. One of these days you want get him in a video for anything. Don't blink they grow up over night.
Thank you for your knowledge. I agree my eye catches every change in peoples work so i have just avoided using that type of yarn
I remark that 2 cakes with the same serial number with the same colors but not place at the same place !! So, when we have two legs or arms, you absolutely control your colors!
the particle rolls in the bag would make a nice granny square blanket
I think that is an option if u want that gradient which it can b beautiful but it really depends on the item u r making!
I did a little color control with a sugar wheel because the change was really drastic but it was only about ten stitches in and yes I always save the ends to use as markers or the kids art project
I so agree with you about the color changes
I love how real your channel is. Don’t change a thing.
I am getting tired of cakes but I have so many that I will be using them for a long time to come.
Btw.... Zee didn’t get your address from me.
yeah, she said that she saw me flash my addres on the screen! haha
I didn't know if she sent it to me, or if someone else bought one from her and had her send the little package to me!
I need to be a bit more careful with flashing my address!haha
Hi Summer, I enjoy so much your videos and you. I'm so glad I found your channel. That was a great idea how you color control, I
bet a lot of people never thought of that. You make your videos fun. Do you ever crochet a project while filming your video? Thank you for all you do. Love to see your kids. Lori Schreiner
It is perfectly fine to have your kids coming in and out of your videos. You are a mom, it is to be expected.
Great video🙂.
great point...in knitting the color changes blend much better than with crochet especially when doing a double crochet
I agree!
I do that also depending on what I am working on I like the random change sometimes.
Thanks for the great info Summer!
Usually, it's the pet dander that causes allergies, not the fur. I have that issue myself and animal dander issues happen in spring and fall.
I've never had an issue. I'm going to email you my butterfly prayer shawl. Great video!
I do this for the first part but let it flow as the project gets bigger.
I love it the way it is
I love how the varigated yarns work out.. I have zero patience to frog, and redo the rows, I just let it flow.. hahaa
S U R P R I S E ! ! !
Totally forgot to include a little card, I'm so sorry. Nope, my fellow hookers did not send me your address.
You are correct tho, you've flashed your address enough times, that I took that as a sign that I NEED to send ya a lil sum sum, hahaaaa
Awwwww yay!!!
First time I have seen one of your videos. Loved it and thanks for the information. I just bought Mandala yarn yesterday.
Thanks, great info. Sure helped me. I like your video natural. Real life🥰
Hi again, I’m sorry, I’m sure I’ve missed it in previous video but what pattern is your multi-triangle shawl! It looks so pretty and quite large! Thank you Summer!
Great video, I hate the abrupt changes too. I just tend to stay away from cakes
Hey Gypsy!
@@madebymarshamommarsha2861 hi 👋
I think you son likes looking at himself lol.
I agree with you that the color changing mid row does look sloppy but I look at it this way, these cakes are the way of the future so everyone expects this to happen so it’s no big deal.
I love your bag of “yarn parts”
He sure does.
You are right about that...'everyone expects this to happen" this a is a good rule of thumb!
Flynn is too cute 💕. Great video 💕
Yes, it does bug me to.. so I understand your pain...😰😱😵
Hi Summer! If it was me I think I'd put a magnet on the back of the coaster & stick it on the fridge.
Thank you Summer!
Don’t change love your podcast!
Thank you Summer, Hello Flynn
I must have watched this one before and didn't comment. Great info 2nd time around:)
He's such a cutie.
Hi Ms ,j I saw that in something that I made . the color change happen in the middle of the roll. It did look like you mess up . Tks I know what to do what that 😊
He is so adorable. Lol
