An absolute legend to me, I have loved Chris's music since the moment I heard it. The first time I fired up Turrican 2 on the Amiga my jaw dropped, it's still a real favourite of mine to this day. I have a huge appreciation for everything he's done. Amazing.
Yesss great guy, danke für Deine Soundtracks, Chris! Habe Deine Musik schon als Kind geliebt, als ich "To be on top" auf C64 gespielt habe.. Mitte-Ende der 80er. (Loved his music already when I was a child in the 80s when playing "to be on top")
this man created the theme to Apidya...one of the best shooters out there!! the main theme is just sublime!! his ear for melody and ability to compose within such demanding environments deserves recognition. thanks for sharing this john :)
Thx DF for interviewing Chris. I started to play games on the C64 and i was amazed how good some soundtracks were. Chris Hülsbecks name was often on the credits of these games. Awww, memories.
Thanks for this 'Digital Foundry' and 'Chris Huelsbeck' is a great person and composer (great thx to the Amiga /C64 scene too) but i hope he can make music for better games as 'bubsy' in the future... Happy Sun(ny)day ;)
When I was a kid I remember seeing his name in almost any C64 game I played, never thought that after so many years this guys keeps rocking it. Amazing interview!!
John, that's why I love DF Retro) Any DF Retro video is making up my day! Thanks for inviting such a legendary person. For me, Chris has always been a Europe's answer to Japan's very own Yuzo Kashiro) Anyway, Chris and Yuzo are my childhood heroes. I hope You and guys like Chris and Yuzo will follow Hideo "Genius" Kojima's example and will visit Russia.
Back in the early 90's, I remember a friend of mine giving me a cassette with the Turrican 2 soundtrack of which he had recorded using a tape recorder next to his tv :) Such an awesome soundtrack, and deinitely still one of my favourtie, if not my favourtie soundtracks today. Bloody love it!
I remember seeing Hülsbeck at a concert in Stockholm more than 10 years ago. He was signing stuff along with Uematsu and others. Didn't manage to get his signature sadly, and had to educate my jrpg nerdy friends on Turrican. :)
This is the first time I hear this information first hand from a composer who worked on these systems, this is a grand video, John. Thank you so much, this is super informative and interesting!
Great video. Chris’ music was game changing even for people not on the systems he composed on. He’s had my kick starter funding in the past. As an ST guy back in the day it’s great to hear Chris talk of jochen hippel (mad max), id love to see an interview with him, and talking about the c64 and amiga ports (i think) he did over the years!
This is awesome! Thanks for having a legend on DF retro. Since you are in europe, maybe you can do the same with other composers, like jeroen tel...Viel Danke Chris!
I started on a Commodore 16, aspiring to the plus4, c64 (& Atari 800XL!!) and then the Amiga/Atari ST, for me, the Amiga/ST days were the most fun, the 'pirate' scene was truly amazing back then.
My favourite game on the Atari ST was Turrican 2, the graphics, gameplay and music were amazing. The intro music is burned into my brain and I still listen to it every now and again.
Yeah I remember an IGN interview with Julian Eggebrecht about this project. It was to put the Gamecube games in a compilation with motion controls, fix some of the issues with Rebel Strike, and put in a new lightsaber duel mode. But by then Factor 5 was in a lot of trouble.
So many fine memories came rushing back while watching this. I spent more time in the Turrican 2 music menu than I did playing the game. Chris' composed so many other great Amiga soundtracks such as Monkey Island (which sounded a lot better than the PC version), R-Type, Z-Out...... Like others have said, Turrican 2's soundtrack is, and will always remain, as one of the best soundtracks of all time.
22:26 I absolutely agree!! I think about that constantly, for me especially with the PSone and the graphics. Loved seeing what devs could push those systems to do over time.
Great review. Remember playing (with a pirate copy distributed from someone) of Quick and Silvia first time on the Amiga and thought the game was quite good, but the music made the game excellent. Now I know why.
Clicked on this straight away, Chris huelsbeck is my joint favourite game music composer along with yuzo koshiro. I think that Chris's soundtrack for apidya might just top the almighty turrican. I would love to see an interview with koshiro San but I don't know good his english is. The thing that both of them have in common is that they seemingly used magic to get around hardware limitations to produce music that you wouldn't have thought possible on various systems.
Nice video. This one hit me good. 😁 I started making music myself because I really was addicted to the music in my video games. Today I still make music in hopes of catching the ears of game developer.
If anyone wants more of this, may I recommend a little known channel called GST大好き. he does historic game mixes by composer, or genre with text overlay so you can learn as you listen. It's phenomenal work and criminally under appreciated imo.
Hey John, I just recently discovered DF Retro, and I love it. Do you know, there is a big Retro-Videogames scene. So, do you plan to do more videos on systems like the C64 and Amiga? I would love to hear your opinion on the upcoming release of Ultracore. Originally developed for the Amiga and Mega Drive, by DICE in 1995, but was never released back then, and is about to be released this Fall. Albeit only for modern platforms like Switch and PS4, I don't know if it will be on PC. But hey. Also, there are amazing recent FPGA accelerator cards for the Amiga, called the Vampire. Keep up your good work. Vielen Dank! ;-)
Mr huelsbeck, i have purchased turrican 4 concept album. And im a life long turrican fan all the way back to c64. Please can you get the rainbow arts lads together , and get them to make a new turrican please. Thank you god...i mean chris!
An absolute legend to me, I have loved Chris's music since the moment I heard it. The first time I fired up Turrican 2 on the Amiga my jaw dropped, it's still a real favourite of mine to this day. I have a huge appreciation for everything he's done. Amazing.
Chris Huelsbeck one of the heroes of my childhood. Schön, ihn hier zu sehen.:)
Yeah, real fascinating listening to him and his stories. Toller Künstler der mich seit meiner Kindheit begleitet.
@@Mr_Wheez Das hast du schön gesagt.:)

The title screen music for R-Type on the C64 was one of my fav 8-bit tunes. Memories.
The Amiga music sounds even better.
I love Chris's music the guy is a legend Even my 75 year mother loves the Turrican music, cant wait for the full documentary Type DF Retro.
Chris Huelsbeck and David Whittaker made some of my favourite Amiga soundtracks when I was growing up. So cool to see him as a guest here :)
Chris Huelsbeck is a magician! Thank you for the music....
And thank you John for that awesome interview.
Merci!!!!
Thx DF for interviewing Chris. I started to play games on the C64 and i was amazed how good some soundtracks were. Chris Hülsbecks name was often on the credits of these games. Awww, memories.
One of the best video game composers around. His theme for R-Type on the Amiga remains one of my favourite pieces of video game music ever.
I was only 5 when turrican 2 was released but the music has stuck with me to this day.
From turrican to bubsy,oh Mr. Huelsbeck how the mighty have fallen...
Thanks for this 'Digital Foundry' and 'Chris Huelsbeck' is a great person and composer (great thx to the Amiga /C64 scene too) but i hope he can make music for better games as 'bubsy' in the future...

Grüße aus Deutschland an alle DF-Retro-Fans (greetings to all DF-Retro fans from germany).
watched and listened and... tears :) thank you John, thank you Chris !!
His C64 R-Type tune still blows my mind. Legend.
Wasn't that Rob Hubbard?
@17:06 You can see by those sparkling eyes of John that he's a true RETRO GOD, amazing work once again DF.
I remember seeing Hülsbeck at a concert in Stockholm more than 10 years ago. He was signing stuff along with Uematsu and others. Didn't manage to get his signature sadly, and had to educate my jrpg nerdy friends on Turrican. :)
Thanks for this nice interview. Such an amazing and sympathic music genius ;)
Great stuff. Good interview. I would love to see Rob Hubbard there.
Rob Hubbard, Ben Daglish (RIP), Chris Huelsbeck, Jeroen Tel, Martin Galway, etc. etc.
All music heroes of C=64 games
Really liked the Jochen Hippel talk. This was a top-notch interview. Keep doing this.
Nice, a DF focus on audio! I'm glad to see it!
I love Huelsbeck’s work and I love DF Retro. Thank you for this!
Huelsbeck is a legend. Free beer for life.
Thanks for the interview and footage / music samples!
Classic tunes in the Turrican games! That's why we are selling the hidden gem underdog, Super Turrican 2 at Toy Vault.
This is the first time I hear this information first hand from a composer who worked on these systems, this is a grand video, John. Thank you so much, this is super informative and interesting!
I LOVE Tunnel B1!! Amazing music for that game. The internet has shat on it --- it deserves to be re-examined because it is brilliant

Amazing episode, more of these interviews with devs please!
Chris, thank you for all of your music. You made such a difference!
My favourite game on the Atari ST was Turrican 2, the graphics, gameplay and music were amazing. The intro music is burned into my brain and I still listen to it every now and again.
Great episode, this one is a treat. Thanks John.
11:00 oh my goddd!!! Man, that Wii cancellation gets sadder and sadder the more we learn.
WILL THE PAIN EVER END??
Thanks for doing this, he's one of the very best and responsible for the c64 soundtrack to my childhood
Ah, the feels!
I remember the discs bundled with German mag Screenfun would often have his music in the Autorun :)
Wow great interview here, thank you so much DF!!!
"Am-iga to hear that!" no pun intended John?

Some of my favorite OST's of all time. Legendary Chris!
To this day everytime I hear Turrican 2 music I get goosebumps :)
22:26 I absolutely agree!! I think about that constantly, for me especially with the PSone and the graphics. Loved seeing what devs could push those systems to do over time.
Great interview guys! Loved hearing about the Rogue Squadron process from the man himself.
Wow! Love your music Chris! Been listening for them for countless hours.
Thanks for the hard work man, keep it up, great video!
Thank you, Chris. Very cool.
Wow! Chris is a true genius! I remember his Amiga games music masterpieces.
Loved this. More retro music stuff would be great.
Fantastic Episode
Thank you for this DF.
Wow, John... thanks for this. He is such an inspiration.
i was expecting this from you john but i been surprised by the timing.. Chris Huelsbeck is one of the best vg composers.
Awesome, love Chris! Please do a Rob Hubbard one as well
Video game music was something else back then. I love chip tunes! Mega Drive especially is pure gold.
Richard is waving his hands in the background
Great review. Remember playing (with a pirate copy distributed from someone) of Quick and Silvia first time on the Amiga and thought the game was quite good, but the music made the game excellent. Now I know why.
YES YES 100x YES!! THis is THE DF Retro i have been waiting/hoping for!!!!!!
Excellent Episode!
I know his name is synonym with Amiga... But damn "Mega Turrican Stage 1-1" is his masterpiece to me.
Chris is a bonafide music legend
awesome episode John, more of this !

C64 music: Damn good in large part due to this guy.
Maybe now interview with iconic Robert “Bobby” Caskin Prince III in DF Retro Direct? 😊
Yes!
Excellent interview, would be great if this became a series of "retro" interviews.
absolutely living legend!
What a legend... Chris is a genius.
the turrican 2 intro is probably the greatest intro to any videogame ever. streets of rage 2 is another choice
That. Was. Fantastic.
thanx DF. please next the legendary Dino Dini.
Nice video. This one hit me good. 😁 I started making music myself because I really was addicted to the music in my video games. Today I still make music in hopes of catching the ears of game developer.

BuzzaB77 Yes, awesome channel, please everyone follow!
One of the C64 gods.
Cool, dass ihr Hülsbeck bei euch hattet. John ist ja auch in Deutschland, ihr hättet das Interview auch zusätzlich auf deutsch aufnehmen können?
It's was really interesting. Thanks John.
Please also interview Jesper Kyd, without his soundtracks I highly doubt hitman and AC games would be that successful.
RedZone!
@@BuzzaB77 Adventures of Batman and Robin, too.
Mr Huelsbeck's great works make Hans Zimmer's music sound like a school boy attempting to play the clarinet for the 1st time.
I wouldn't go that far.
Yep, totally true.
11:39 He definitely did do Infernal Machine N64 but probably forgotten about it since it was a rushed port. Also no love for Battle for Naboo?
Crazy coincidence, just today got a CD of his with the latest Retro Gamer magazine that came in the mail.
Seems like a really nice guy
Amiga to listen to this...🥁
Retro Gamer magazine Issue 200 (U.K ) has included a Chris Huelsbeck Turrican Ultimate Collection CD with its latest issue. :)
Amazing content

Yay my favorite composeeerrrr!!! I still use xmplay to play mod,s3m,xm,it,ahx ,sid files :)
My buddy Chris!
I wondered when you'd get around to doing any Commodore 64 / Amiga retro vids and not just retro consoles.
Great interview, you should do Matt Furniss at some stage.
When it comes to game music, Rob Hubbard is king.
Mr huelsbeck, i have purchased turrican 4 concept album. And im a life long turrican fan all the way back to c64. Please can you get the rainbow arts lads together , and get them to make a new turrican please. Thank you god...i mean chris!
He's good on the C64 but he's no Hubbard. Or Galway. Or Follin. Or Tel.
But on the Amiga? Turrican! Genius!
what about alberto jose gonzalez?
Legend!
Amiga to hear that vinyl too!
Do you have this on podcast? A video podcast would be very good.
