Ryan Martinie is one of the most overlooked and underrated bass players out there. One of my favorite musicians. I loved early mudvayne mostly because of his bass. He's finally found where he belongs where he can showcase what he brings to the table. Definitely more artistic freedom with Soften the Glare.
Soften the glare sounds like Primus playing the soundtrack to Spyro the Dragon - amazing! It is the perfect blend of metal, psychedelic rock, jazz, and funk!
I would love to see Ryan and Les Claypool just have a bass jam session. It took a little while, but I'm really starting to dig the Soften The Glare sound.
I would be too if I had Ryan as a bassist! Only reason why i loved mudvayne was for their rhythm section! lol.. LD 50 is one of the best progressive metal albums of the 2000s!
@@DeadSideDad when I first heard LD 50 I flipped out wondering if I was listening to the greatest bass player on the planet. Literally moved me to pick up my bass again with fervor. I continued to dig Mudvayne lesser with each release as it kinda popped out but agree about LD 50 def a top album all-time largely due to Ryan. So glad I found this. He's amazing IMHO possibly on par with Jaco. I'll be jamming on this relentlessly and by tomorrow I'll be dusting off my gear once again
Im so glad I got to see them live before the pandemic hit. Brilliant musicians that complment each others parts amazingly. Heck, even their 'mistakes' are of epic brilliance.
I can't compare Ryan with any of the above. They all play bass but sound nothing like each other. Technically accomplished, but most importantly, they have their individual voice on the instrument.
Bro, as a life long bass player myself, this sounds like the main theme started with a bass riff. Ryan has some great musicians to bounce off too. Having a guitar player that can write around complex bass lines with a less is more approach, and writing around a bass line is priceless. Great song by the way!
I was just thinking (and already left a comment saying) that Ryan should get with AAL. This isn't bad, but it's kind of generic 80s era prog. I wouldn't listen to this if it weren't for Ryan's parts. I always expected to see Ryan in more interesting projects.
@@KingDM83 I thought the same thing but then I realized I wouldn't want his style to get changed too much and it likely would if he were in AAL considering how different they sound from his style.

I love this guy! Ryan is an amazing bassist and really enjoy this style of music! It makes me as a bassist really want to go off an play stuff like this with band mates and not just for fun. Its hard to find other players on this level to create with.

Ryan Martinie is an amazing bassist. He is apparently going back to Mudvayne (GREAT BAND!), but I hope he does some Jazz Fusion projects in the future. There is room enough in the world for a talented artist like him to do both Jazz and Rock to EVERYONE'S PLEASURE. Be well and Peace Out.
This is the 2:12 - 2:27 part of Death Blooms. Love it. This is sick. I just bought the album on bandcamp with the autographed cd. I'm so stoked to jam this out in my car for weeks!

i hate that i'm such a massive Martinie fanboy, but i can't help it *sobs* but for real, listen to Bob's effects starting @ 2:11, what he plays while using that effect, how much it sounds like there is a synth along with the guitar, and how well it intersects and matches what Ryan is playing. it's musical genius. let's hear it for ol Bobby!
also, there isn't enough clean, raw, soundboard quality video footage from the LD 50 days (which really is a shame), so us Ryan fanboys are starved for video content. we'd rather see what he is doing to achieve the sounds we're hearing at 3:32, not a contrived slow motion effect that doesn't show us what is going on. i get what the editor was going for, but all we need to be impressed by this band is to see it and hear it, we don't need some edited-in after effects that someone thought was headie

Mudvayne was a time and place. You can't just get it back. I was completely taken by LD 50 as a teenager. Then I thought The End of All Thing to Come was ok. pretty accurate descript
You nailed it lol
PRIMUD!
And that baby was raised by Pink Floyd
It sound more like if Mudvayne got rid of their shitty guitarist and then had a baby with Primus. Greg Tribbet is a hack. You know it's true.
