    Queen Jennah: That looks like one, but it's actually the Krytan Spiderwort. It'll bloom soon, and its petals give you the most luscious dyes. It's my favorite flower. It hides its true potential from most and then blossoms into something great. Happy hunting, Commander.

    Lyssa had always stuck me as one to play all sides. Not one to truly play neutral. She would side with the other gods and banish Balthazar while at the same time slipping Balthazar a nail file baked into a cake to help him break out. Lyssa always comes out on the winning side

    Lyssa is the opposition to all other gods. She contrasts Balthazar's Fire with her Water, Kormir's Truth with her Illusions, Dwayna's Order with her Chaos, Grenth's Hideousness with her Beauty, and Melandru's Oneness-with-nature with her Duality. Whether Anet realizes it or not (and they probably don't) they have a bottomless well of spectacular plot devices, all thanks to Lyssa. Very curious to see how (or if) they even use her.

    Were you aware there's dialogue specific to human mesmers when examining the mirror after the Balthazar reveal? It openly says Lyssa must've been helping Balthazar. It seemed like a rather big leap to assume, but you don't get that message if you're a human or a mesmer separately. Only if you're a human mesmer.

    WP - I have always seen an interesting dynamic between Lyssa and Balthazar since GW1. Chaos and War go hand-in-hand, but Lyssa is the tactician where as Balthazar is the soldier - very much resembling Athena and Ares in Mythology. Because of this, I like the idea that Lyssa was appointed the goddess of water because she was the only god capable of balancing Balthazar as the god of fire. She is his antithesis, and these recent lore bits only further that idea to me. From here, I suspect that Lyssa not only orchestrated the easy release of Balthazar but she also fully anticipated the player’s ability to destroy Balthazar. She knew that merely containing him away like Abaddon was foolish. Instead, she freed him and gave him the mirror as a false indication that she was on his side. In actuality, she was marking him to be destroyed by the races of Tyria to “make a choice that only a mortal can make” as she stated near the events of Nightfall.
    Thoughts?

    • @W4lhalla
      @W4lhalla 7 років тому +5

      Hmm good theory. Its something that would be fitting to Lyssa. Her orchestrating the release of Balthazar would also explain how Rytlock and his Sword got to the godly douchebag. Perhaps she knew that Balthazar was someone to hold such a grudge and that Balthazar would destroy whole worlds as collateral damage ( quite fitting for a former god of war. ) just to get his way. She knew that his punishment ( which for someone like Balthazar would be a fate worse than death ), would not ensure the safety of the worlds, the mists and the gods in the long run.
      But for some things she had to gamble quite a lot. I mean Balthazar fucking killed us.... Hmm perhaps the other ghost that helped us wasn't a ghost but Lyssa in disguise. Still a lot gambling here.

    • @mikev-08
      @mikev-08 7 років тому +4

      What an interesting theory! It is possible that Lyssa knew that gambling with the fate of Tyria by releasing Balthazar was a smaller risk than having an all-out war between Balthazar and the other gods... Remember that Kormir claimed that the war between the gods and Abaddon created the Desolation.

    • @MehrumesDagon
      @MehrumesDagon 7 років тому +4

      this isn't really kormir claim - this is well established Nightfall lore - crystal desert and desolation are direct effects of the five vs abaddon combat that happened on the face of tyria.. - altho from what I understood drying up of the sea was the immediate effect, and the sulfurous desolation become a thing slowly later as the sulfur was said to originate from the mouth of torment

    A long time ago there was a town in Vabbi where a pair of twins lived, one was named Lyss and the other was named Ilya. They looked as identical as two drops of water and lived a joyful life with their parents, until their first day of school began where they were harassed by their classmates with curses that ruined their confidence. The two girls with each half of a broken heart decided to run away into the desert so that the town wouldn't have to see their atrocity again, but when the night fell upon them they realized they were lost and knew not how to return home. Discouraged by regrets and worn down with fatigue they decided to give up and wait out their death in each others arms. Yet their wistful conclusion would not come true as a pack of Kodash foxes appeared like a mirage and surrounded them with all their grace and allure. The foxes saw that the two girls were fractured in both body and spirit and decided that they would teach them the ways of illusion and love. The next morning the town was introduced to the Goddess Lyssa, a beautiful woman admired by all citizens who fell to their knees in wish for her blessings. But when she asked for the whereabouts of her parents she was informed that they had traveled out into the desert to look for their daughters and never returned home. The illusion of Lyssa was then ruptured like her heart and resulted in an explosion so large that the town was fully erased from the ground. The only thing left remaining were the twins Lyss and Ilya who vowed to forever put human integrity to the test and bless those who are able to see the beauty behind illusion.

    Gods and Dragons are actually in balance : Balthazar and Primordus (Fire), Dwayna and Jormag (Air/Cold), Grenth and Zhaitan(Death), Melandru and Mordremoth(Earth), The Deep Sea Dragon and Kormir (Depths, think Abbadon), Lyssa actually thus fits Kralkatorik, both in her color motif, and it's chaotic influences.

    My personal theory on the nature of Lyssa is unlike the other gods she can actually be in two places at once. So she can be one entity but also divide herself to function as two independent entities. But these are still god level and not avatars.
    Avatars in GW always stuck me as independent beings that were highly devoted to their patron God and not just lesser aspects or slivers of the gods themselves

    By the way, Balthazar called rytlock friend for letting him out and was going to spare him. So we know his personality there.
    By not cursing Lyssa, she had to have done something beneficial for him. She's also his "friend"
    Can't be a mistake from the devs leaving her name out.

    Hey WP, I was just replaying episode 6 of LWS3 to get to Siren's Landing, and I noticed when you're leaving the first instance, and the Priest of Balthazar is mocking you for not sparring with him, he asks one of the other priestess to spar, he asks the priestess of Lyssa. It may just be a coincidence or maybe an easter eggy "nudge" toward the suggestion of Balthazar and Lyssa being in cahoots.

    Ares and Aphrodite were known to have a torrid love affair... assuming the devs took influence from the greek pantheon, Balthazar definitely fits Ares domain of war and fire. Lyssa being the goddess of beauty is all you need to link her to Aphrodite. Could it be more than a friendship?

    One thing I've thought over (more recently after watching this video) is about the instance with Kormir in the storyline. You mentioned Lyssa mocked Kormir for wanting to stay behind on Tyria, and I've thought, what if she did that as a way of rushing Kormir (and the other Gods) away, possibly leaving Lyssa behind without them realising. They are so quick to leave, and with Lyssa pushing them, that they don't realise she isn't possibly leaving herself.

    Kormir said that balthazar is not one of the six, the way that this is worded makes me think balthazar was replaced. What if Lyssa was split into two? bit farfetched but heyo. I did think a while ago that the Lyssa technically being two beings could explain why Kormir didn't keep two powers, maybe Lyssa could contain more. Maybe kormir being a new goddess couldn't handle it. What if this fits into the forgotten's idea of sharing the magic between powerful entities?

    • @ninjaone1
      @ninjaone1 7 років тому +11

      "not one of the six" IS very particular wording, and worth paying attention to. It implies there are still six. I think the gods are going to start playing a bigger role in the story, among everything else that's going on. Or maybe not, this could have easily been the nail in the coffin of the gods interaction with tyria.

    • @SoulSlesh
      @SoulSlesh 7 років тому +2

      what do you mean by "could explain why Kormir didn't keep two powers" -what two powers? The only power she got from abaddon was dominion over water magic. He was called the 'god of secrets' because he was the keeper of secrets, there's no 'secrets magic'. And if there was then kormir would automatically be goddess of secrets right? but instead she *chose* to call herself goddess of truth. That's why balthazar was "the god of war" -because he loved war but his powers were fire magic.

    • @TheDanorleegostar
      @TheDanorleegostar 7 років тому

      SoulSlesh I think the words secrets and truth both refer to them being gods of knowledge. And although there isn't a tangible 'knowledge magic' or 'power', I think it's still significant enough for there to be a god for it. If being God of water and the sea was abandons main domain, he wouldn't be called God of secrets. It seemed more like an additional power, as the depths hide secrets, and maybe that's why kormir gave it up, because she chose the title of truth

    • @SoulSlesh
      @SoulSlesh 7 років тому

      Well to me that seems more of a role/occupation rather than a power. For instance someone can be a warlord without godly powers but if they happen to have dominion over fire magic they can become 'the god of war'. Similarly abaddon's godly powers were probably over water magic however he *chose* to be the keeper of knowledge and secrets. When kormir replaced him, along with his godly powers she probably gained access to his collection of knowledge and secrets and she *chose* to share at least some of those secrets and knowledge thus calling herself 'goddess of truth'. That said godly powers or not any mortal can be a keeper of knowledge -what makes her a god is the insane amounts of magic she absorbed from abaddon (that happens to be water magic). She could have given that knowledge to a random mortal and instead call herself 'the goddess of soup'. However if she would have indeed given all her water magic to lyssa -that would mean kormir is not a goddess anymore -just a random keeper of knowledge.

    • @TheDanorleegostar
      @TheDanorleegostar 7 років тому

      I don't think there's different types of magic (like water, fire etc) in GW universe, just that magic is channeled to enable abilities to work. However, I think, like a lot of gw2 lore, this situation is just down to bad writing; sure kormir gave over the mantle of god of water to lyssa, but I don't think that means she gave away any magic in the process.

    Lyssa is the deep sea elder dragon, and her duality is that she is also the god.
    Abbadon kept it a secret cuz he was the god of secrets. Kormir learned about it and decided to give water dragon water power, cuz they are on same side anyways and would prob make better use of it.
    Balthazar was working with elder dragon lyssa to kill elder dragons so it's power could be absorbed.
    Lololol

  • @absolutionis
    @absolutionis 7 років тому +1

    There was this weird scene in Living Story 3 where you're talking about Elder Dragons in the Priory library/archives and a character lists Elder Dragons. When they get to the Deep Sea dragon, they just awkwardly forget the name. Coincidentally, this is about when it was revealed Lyssa gained her water domain from Kormir. I believe there is a scene like that with Taimi as well in the Dragon lab. It's just weird that the name has been literally forgotten twice by characters that should know it.
    Oh, and the Thaumanova Reactor was researching Chaos magic which ended up being dragon magic. Coincidence?
    Zhaitan's MESMER knew to steal the Krait Orb which suppressed Zhaitan's minions and was suspected to originate from the Deep Sea Dragon.
    Deep Sea Dragon is Lyssa. She talks to the gods with one body/persona and does Elder Dragony things with the other persona.
    Also the Largos wear masks that are oddly similar to Lyssa's statue mask from an old concept art. The Largos were also pushed out by the Deep Sea Dragon. i.pinimg.com/736x/ee/93/ef/ee93ef5516fa7d3498afc67da3e9edac--game-concept-concept-art.jpg
    Also, Kekai Kotaki's concept art for the Deep Sea dragon has two heads. wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/File:Dragon_16_concept_art.jpg
    COINCIDENCE?!?
    Lyssa is the Deep Sea Dragon.

    This was fantastic to listen to, thanks!
    I particularly love the parable of the gods: they give so much more depth and interest to the lore behind the human gods. It's a shame that what the community thinks of the subject does not go beyond repeating memes about Kormir or saying that "the gods are useless as usual". As it is a shame, I think, that with all the opportunities they had in PoF, the best the devs could do with the gods was them saying "Sorry, we are leaving, but you can do it on your own". I sincerely hope you are right, and there's more about it involving Lyssa or any other god, but at the moment I am quite skeptical.

  • @zachnightingale8156

    Facts pushing for Lyssa actually being important:
    1. Balthazar somehow had her mirror (perhaps she have it to him).
    2. Kormir said "...even Lyssa" in reference to agreement to banishing Balthazar.
    3. Balthazar never cursed Lyssa before his death.
    4. WP mentioned that it seemed as though someone had been 'there' before us (in Kormir's sanctum and Kesho) - perhaps this was Lyssa.

    In the sheltered docks at malchor's leap, you can do a history quiz on Orr and the gods.
    One of the questions asks, which god liked to stand among the humans.
    I am unsure who the answer was, it was either Melandru or Lyssa.
    Either way, it all can be a plot to safe Tyria. With the gods going and one trying to doom the world, using Balthazar as a way to guide the mortals into a certain direction could be the way to go.
    An illusion/deception by Lyssa to put us on the right path, by sacrificing one of their own. Or Balthazar knew what he was about to do and thus was that much of a cartoon villian.

    Yes, Lyssa lore! I'm not going to lie, if Lyssa ends up in the story, I just desperately want Lyss and Ilya to be on opposite sides of this conflict. Though you do make an interesting point: despite the "twin" theme, everyone really seems to treat Lyssa like a single entity. If she is indeed going to get more development in the near future, I'll be very interested to see where they go with it. Just so long as it isn't Queen Jennah.

    The very few pure water spells that elementalists had in GW1 were more akin the Mesmer spells anyway. So it really always made sense that Lyssa would have been patron of water. I think the story about the transfer of power from Kormir to Lyssa was just to clean that part up.

    Lyssa is related to chaos and manipulation. Also it could be related to Kralkatorik. Kralkatorik is related to Glint (and Vlast and Aurene). Glint was the main influence that moved the character forward in GW1 manipulating us through half told prophecies. Also Lyssa could be related to crystals and that opens a whole new level of manipulation and chaos (the searing, crystal sea turning into crystal desert, Kralkatorik and the branded, etc)

      Tyresidon Not entirely. Devona could have ended up the hall of heros. I don't think the devs said anything in regards to this theory when one guy asked during AMA if the herald was Devona. She has similarities as for wielding hammer, mention of heroine past. Devona was a member of ascalons chosen, (also that comes to mind is that Ascalon was a campaign of Balths favor to make humans the most dominant race). Other than that, she strived to become like her father. Not everything mentioned by wiki is canon.

    One key point about the mirror:
    Kasmeer knew about the mirror. That implies that the mirror exists in Tyrian mythology, meaning that she had to have given it to him more than 250 years ago, and thus it is highly unlikely that she gave it to him as part of some nefarious plot.

    My own personal theory is that Abaddon killed one of the Lyssa twins and took water from her. When Kormir rose, she gave it back to the surviving twin. It was described in the first game that Abaddon defeated 2 of the gods, but it did not say which ones. I interpreted this to be the Lyssa twins, and he was cast down into torment for the crime of destroying what may have been a demi-god. Not sure if any lore supports this, I could be very wrong.

    WP, I keep seeing you selecting a new mount by clicking through the interface. In case you didn't know, there are hotkeys you can assign to each individual mount. To mention something more on topic, there was a line from Glint where she wondered what the Forgotten had told the Six that she didn't know. Because this is in the context of Glint fighting Kralkatorrik, and the Forgotten are believed to have been servants of the Six, it makes me wonder if really the Forgotten somehow created the Six as an attempt to fight the Elder Dragons. It takes me down a bit of a rabbit hole into thoughts about the motives of the Six, but that line stood out to me as something odd to discuss. The Forgotten dealt with Glint longer than they did the Six, didn't they? Or maybe they abandoned Glint to work on their new project, the Six?

Also, Kunavang is having a conversation with someone where she references the canthans "built their lives upon the very thing that sought to end theirs" which could be a dragon, in which case who is kunavang talking to; Lyssa? Lyssa could have promised balthazar power if she helped him "end the dragons". Sidenote, Abbadon have known too much (the secrets) so they locked him away, Kicking off the chain of events that ended with Lyssa having the power of water as well. It may be a reach but If we dont know how to beat the water dragon and Lyssa IS speaking in the trailer that may be why it does "...have to be this way" and "they need me"(lyssa).

    There is a Priest of Lyssa on Queensdale which says Lyssa is the goddess of water because water is the most perfect mirror of all. I think this is all they ever mentioned about Lyssa being the goddess of water.
    Kormir indeed said that Balthazar was hiding so the gods wouldn't notice him (especially because he was using another god's magic). They never told us how he got this Lyssa item tho, plus Balthazar not cursing Lyssa is indeed a nice observation. I would really like if they explore more about the gods' lore and such. But maybe they should focus a bit on norn since their story is never explored and we know so little about their spirits.
    But hey WP, on the wiki Tengu page says they posses an ancient lost knowledge about the elder dragons, and they are very aware of their cycle of awakening and such. Could it be this the information on how to defeat them while not killing them?

    Although overall I find the PoF story to be really good and well done, the Kormir part being my favorite even, I still can't help but to feel they made it seem like they are closing the chapter of the gods, which makes makes me sad because I really enjoy that facet of the lore. But then I also noticed the little hints about Lyssa that I feel like are way too explicit to not mean anything. I really hope they get back to the Gods, there's so much cool stuff they could do with them!

    What if Lyssa has some plans to do with Kralkatorrik? If we assume she's Jennah, then she already saved Krak once (from Destiny's Edge) and then potentially set Balth up to be killed by the Commander with Kralk nearby, and now Kralk is super powerful and Lyssa might be the only god around. I know it's very far fetched by do quite enjoy the sound of it. :P

I'm refering the first portal he made after Rytlock left, what would been his first visit to start his rebellion? Would he be able to gain the mirror prior to said events? As we saw he did had nothing on him. This could say 100% lissia is the one who is messing with everyone if so.

    With Balthazar the whole imprisonment thing seemed shoddy at best. A few chains and a sword capable of cutting them just out of reach? How did the sword get there? Was it left to taunt Balthazar? Was it drawn to him? Or was it left as a potential escape? Lyssa is two faced, literally and figuratively.

    Risen Priestess of Lyssa: Zhaitan will devour you, just as he devoured our gods.
    25% health
    Risen Priestess of Lyssa: My goddess was mere prey for the dragon. Despair!
    Is it just Risen trying to make the human Pact members give up? Probably. But I'd expect more than one of the priests/priestesses to use that tactic. It'll be really cool to see where this goes in the future!

    One thing I'm wondering about is the status of our character "the commander" which has killed two elder dragons, absorbed a lot of magic, came back from death and killed a god. That's like saying a elephant at ground zero of a nuclear explosion absorbed all the radiation and everyone else nearby is fine. Balthazar dying was like a small magic nuke going off; the Commander and Aurene were directly at ground zero. Granted he wasn't fully powered up yet but it was still a lot of magical energy. The Commander was also near at a bloodstone explosion. The Commander has to have a hell of a lot of magical energy in her. More than any other mortal.

    • @W4lhalla
      @W4lhalla 7 років тому +4

      Don't forget that Balthazar was no god anymore. He was replaced and stripped of his godhood for quite a time. What we killed was more like a Demi-God. Insanely powerful but without his divine powers. And what was absorbed by Kralkatorrik was mostly magic from the Bloodstone with some Primordus and Jormag sparkles. So whoever the new God of War is now, we don't know. But we are no God Slayer now. ( It might change but right now we aren't )
      And on the topic on the commander and containing a lot of magic. There was a small plot point in the current events that we have quite a lot of magic in us. So much that we suffered from magic poisoning. ( The stuff with the hallucinations ) But with a very old artifact we could get rid off the side effects. And while all the stuff that happened from vannila to now had an effect on the mental health of the commander our character is one of two sane people with that amount of magic available ( only two if you count Xera ). I guess we can hold such amount of magic since we are a dragon champion now. ( and that small device helping us to gain magic without harming ourselves )

    Lyssa being Queen Jenna would fit pretty well beyond witnessing the enormous power exerted in shielding Divinity's Reach. Queen Jenna helped to spearhead the fight against Zhaitan and is an influential figure in the Pact. If killing Elder Dragons creates chaos, which Lyssa thrives upon, then maybe she has the same idea as Balthazar. Maybe Lyssa is doing what Balthazar tried to do in order to gain more power, and just used the god of fire as a pawn. She would just be doing this in a secretive and manipulative fashion, which would be in character for her. Getting the player character and the Pact to kill dragons for her would make sense.

    Theory that just hit me: Lyssa trapped Joko in the mists.
    If we assume that Lyssa and Balthazar were working together then maybe you can say that Lyssa asked Balthazar to lead Joko into the mists and trap him as punishment for removing Lyssa's influence in Elona.
    This all depends on how Joko is handled in Season4, because he was chained with Balthazar's chains which may disappear now. This also leads into a 2nd theory that Lyssa tricked the other gods into leaving as she stays behind. Should this be the case we will see Joko get freed then maybe very soon after Lyssa swoops in and knocks Joko over even harder.

    Balthazar stole the Mirror wich was stored in the Reliquary of the Gods he also took some other Artifacts from there wich are mentioned in several parts of the Game (he took stuff from Lyssa,Kormir and his beloved Melandru) i doubt the Story will be about Lyssa because Kormir stated before everyone except Balthasar left the World. read your book from the collector's edition of Nightfall: Chapter two, the 5 True Gods: Melandru statues show her as a tall winged dryad rising from a tree-shapped base. Grenth is portray with the body of a man and the narrow skull of a beast. Balthazar is shown holding a greatsword, sometimes with a pair of faithful battle hounds sitting at his feet, some eleonian portrays him with majestic lions. Dwayna is shown as a tall slender woman rising above the ground on feathered wings. Finally, Lyssa, the two goddesses, twin figures of exquisite beauty entwined in an eternal dance. The mask may change and the dance may change, but Lyssa's dual nature does not. She is beautiful to some and terrifying to others. The picture of Lyssa, or in game facing her, Lyssa has a mask with 4 faces.
    GW1 heroes: Koss, Dunkoro, Melonni, Tahlkora, Acolyte Sousuke, Acolyte Jin, ZHED (when having to disguise as corsair to save Kormir, Zhed famous phrase: 'what am I supppose to be, your mascott?'), Margrid, Norgu, Goren, Olias, Master of Whisper, Zenmai, Razah

    I have a little offtopic question:
    I've noticed in your Path of Fire videos that there are a few framedrops in some places. I'm having the same problem that it goes to like 40 or 30 fps sometimes while Central Tyria and Heart of Maguuma are at 60 to 80 fps (sometimes it goes a bit lower there as well but it depends on if it's a heavily crowded area like on world bosses or a large Meta Event) and I'm having the same graphics enabled as you have. Allthough I have no problems with the framerate it seems like in the PoF areas it might drop a bit sometimes (which I noticed in the videos as well). So can you confirm that this is a common problem and that there is any fix in sight? (I remember back in the HoT days that the maps were laggy as hell but now playable at 100+fps)

    I'll be fine if Lyssa had some hand in Balthazar's return or involvement with the white mantle and the bloodstone but, I would hope they don't have her forsake her followers and a Human race. I find the idea of gods betraying their loyal followers and doing things on their own terms a cliche or too easy to go for with developers. "Hey! What if we have the gods come back and now HURT their followers and the world! For their own gain cause REASONS! HAHA!"

    I love these videos but it feels like you're doing ANet's job at actually telling these stories and making them interesting for the community. Almost none of this info would be apparent to someone who played only gw2... and even so, all this info could be circumstantial and not what the devs intended in the first place. It might all even be irrelevant for future events, or never be clarified by the devs, if the gods truly simply just left, as told to us during PoF's story. You always get me hyped and interested in the story but it rarely ever actually gets resolved or confirmed in the game itself :P
