- Nymphaea lotus is in Tropica’s Medium category and is supplied as a bulb in a pot. It needs moderate to strong lighting to get the best results with plenty of free space surrounding it. A nutrient-rich substrate is considered essential with Tropica Nutrition Capsules being useful to provide extra nutrients. It is recommended as a solitary plant for large aquariums due to its large leaves and overall eventual size.

This is my number one favourite aquarium plant! 💜 My first one initially lost its leaves and was just a rhizome for a couple of weeks, but now two weeks later it’s six inches tall with roots visible through the glass in the substrate, and the biggest leaf is the size of my palm, and PURPLE! 💜 Low light and no CO2 either 👍🏼 Edit: just checked it, and it has made a new runner out of one side!

I've had the bulb alone in my established tank for almost a month and literally have two tiny leaves lol I'm surprised how quickly its growing for everyone else...maybe I need to be a bit more patient 😊 keep up the great work 👍
Is your tank a cold tank?
This thing took a month for it grow. I forgot about and it grew up in back of my aquarium and now it took over my whole aquarium.

i've had great sucess growing tiger lotus in a shallow pot with fairly rich regular potting soil under a layer of gravel.
they certainly are primarily root-feedders, because that way they take of like crazy, with no water fertilisation what so ever. i just give them a a capsule of long term fertilizer every 6 months or so. the hardest part about caring for them, is keeping them trimmed. lol

That sounds great and ideal. Unfortunately some people have a harder time with it thus we had to bring it to their attention that the Lotus can be slightly more demanding than the average easy plant

I have one that ( not from tropica!) from the start..has been fussy. Its also changed colors from purple with green metallic markings to more red..but,twice the roots just rotted on it..and there it was..on the gravel. Seems to need much iron or ferts to get big growth..but some people might have no problems and I think I should order a new one.
Btw,The more common brown lilly is doing fine...compact tight growth. Sometimes you get a plant that just isnt the best of the lot.
Pretty accurate description of the Lotus; it is a bit of a roulette.

Man I truly truly truly enjoy these videos my friend learning about all the different plants I have a question for you I have Anubis and Java firm in my big show tank seems like every time I do a water change leaves start dying and Roots start rotting none of the plants are buried in the substrate I use liquid fertilizer in the tank but as long as I don't do a water change everything seems to look beautiful but the next couple of days I start seeing die off or some yellow leaves I add fertilizer right after I do the water change and I also add some during the week
Hi, we're glad the channel is helping you expand your plant knowledge. Regarding the water change, at first sight it seems like there's something wrong with your water; maybe you can purchase some kits to check the water quality out the tap and try to neutralize any damaging factors.
Oh didn't know it was considered as a medium. Mine is in a no CO2 low fert tank. It is Awesome. Yet I would advise more as background plant as it can be quite big
Hi Marlene. It can survive in some tanks, in ours it showed a more needy character than an easy plant thus the placement in the medium category. Better safe than sorry.
Beautiful plant but it proved too vigorous for my 4 foot tank, came back from holiday, and in three weeks I was away it had covered the surface.

Let's pretend nobody saw that 😁, jokes aside those were pretty sturdy, hence the more decisive handling. The fragile warning interests especially those who might not have the optimal conditions for the plants.
I have one that was doing well. The other day, I accidentally broke the root and ended up with a bulb in one hand and the rest in another... I planted the rest in my substrate anyway and the bulb right on the substrate, slightly dug in... I see leaves melting while 2 getting stronger and bulb, no sign of it...
That’s okay! I have one, once it gets rooted I cut off the bulb and grow another one and sell it. Endless supply

@@juli8vdberg562 I have narrowed the size problem down to Co2! The one in my non Co2 tank the leaves stay very small and don’t get tall at all! But my Co2 tank it grows massive and goes to the surface!
@@TypicalMT I thought the same and is indeed a logical scientific explanation of the matter and in my nano tank, I rather keep it small
that can happen easily when planting them too. it can take 4-6 weeks, before the bulb gets going again, especially when it's still small.
I must be lucky. My red tiger lotus bulb sprouted leaves that are so intensely patterned with long brown stripes that almost fill the red areas & truly live up to the name *tiger* lotus! I have never seen such a rare morph before. Usually, those brown spots are sparse & randomly peppered, instead. What causes such variations in stripe patterns, though? Individual plant genetic make-up? Curious me.
Hi Saufi Suria. With bulbs we must admit it is a bit random, as you mentioned, individual plant genetic make up is the main driver behind the beautiful patterns you sometimes stumble upon.
@@TropicaAquariumPlants I see. Guess it's pot-luck, then... pardon the pun! I did some research & realized that the tiger lotus has such a wide distribution in tropical Africa, as well as occupying varied habitats & that gives rise to it's *polymorphous* appearence.
In shaded forest streams of Cameroon, it's leaves are uniform green without spots, whereas in Ghana (Nature Reserves Ankasa) the form is green & speckled while in the depths of the Nile River it forms dense carpets of low, red, speckled mats; perfect hunting grounds for the infamous African tiger fish whose red tail blends in with the red lily pads. And then, in the Okavango Delta? The colors are everything in-between! Regardless of it's origins, this is a hardy, beautiful plant despite needing to be "trained" to manageable sizes. Gotta love them be they green or red! They're full of personality!

Does it really need large room around? I need to just have surface leaves.
If the leaves can move around other plants to reach the surface then you have enough space. Some plants don't like to grow in the area shaded by the leaves of Nymphaea and that will affect where you can place it in your aquarium.

Hi Arry. Melting leaves are usually a sign of poor nutrition; but other factors could be in play. You should check your water parameters and make sure the plant is receiving enough fertilizers.

Hi, I currently have a red tiger lotus growing in a high light high tech co2 aquarium. However, it has been 2 months and it still has not shot out any surface leaves. It has grown to be compact and bushy but it just never wants to grow tall. I have tried shading it and that only triggered about an inch growth. As weird as it is, i want it to shoot our surface leaves. Why is that?

Thank you for reaching out to us. ☺
Nymphaea lotus ("Tiger Lotus") is a widespread species. Therefore it is quite variable, how fast the individual plant will start to grow surface leaves. Some go straight for surface, while others are more prone to grow submersed leaves for a long time.
If you want surface leaves, we will recommend you try one of tow things.
You can dismiss your current plant (sell it off - others will probably be happy about this growth habit) and get a new plant, hoping for genetics better suiting your needs.
Or you can feed the current plant extra heavily, by inserting nutrition capsule(s) right under it. Nymphaea lotus is a very nutrient greedy plant, so this might well trick it into growing surface leaves. 🤞

That's a pity. This might sound obvious but have you checked your water parameters, fertilizers and CO2?
Not close enough I had it growing just fine then it melted away. No co2

If given enough time and space it might eventually flower, it rarely does in a normal aquarium.

Heyo Tropica!
I was wondering if its possible to trim back any leaves that become larger than lets say a cola can footprint? I have a 60L and would like to have lots of smaller leaves instead of the big ones. But I was kinda worried that "excessive early trimming" might kill it perhaps... What would you guys say ?
Howdy Triassic. You can try educating the plant, it's a bit of a gamble, we also had a few in our big tank (see our 3 m panoramic) and once it got to the surface it would only produce big leaves that went all the way up; as long as you have 2,3 functioning leaves at all time you should be ok. Let us know how it went :)
@@TropicaAquariumPlants definitely will! Luckily I mostly have Buce and Anubias that require less light but I rather dont block out too much ofcourse! I'll try to remind to send in an update later!
