I've never heard this version before. I like it. It's softer, cleaner, and more bluesy. It doesn't take away from the original version, either. It gives a different perspective on the song altogether and makes me appreciate both renditions.
This version is very different from 87. I really love both of them and that one is more bluesy, less heavy and less harsh but my God ! it's totally bewitching and addictive.
There have been something like 39 different instrumentalists in WS since its inception to today... why? just curious Who will be allowed to attend if they are inducted into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame? :)
I have to add my opinion on this one: I prefer DC's vocals on this original version best. BUT, I really like John Sykes' guitar on the 1987 version MUCH better than Mickey's guitar on this. Nothing against Mickey, but Sykes is...well, Sykes! I like the 1987 arrangement better as well. Just another opinion, no wrong, no right.
It's so wrong to have all of those pictures up of people who did not play on this version of the song. It is properly stated that this is the original version of the song, so the players are Marsden, Moody, Murray, Paice and Lord on the 'Saints and Sinners' lp. Mel Galley lends his voice to backing vocals along with Mickey Moody. I understand that you may not have access to pics of this line up, but even with the pics you put up, Steve Vai was not involved in any way with the 1987 version of the song or the '87 'Whitesnake' album at all. Neither were Campbell, Vandenberg, Sarzo and Aldridge. With the exception of Adrian Vandenberg putting a new solo on 'Here I Go Again', the 1987 'Whitesnake' album was made with John Sykes, Neil Murrray and Ansley Dunbar. With the exception of Marsdens 'Here I Go Again', all of the songs on the '87 album were written by John Sykes and D.C. with 'Cryin' in the Rain' by D.C. alone. As stated in a different comment below, this guitar solo is compliments of the amazing Bernie Marsden.

Voy a morir escuchando ésta música.
Whitesnake para todos!.
Syke's ripping solo accompanied with Dunbar's faster heavy hitting was an upgrade over this version
I don't understand all the lyrics of this song but I am Crying in the Rain.

You do know that's not John Sykes on guitar, don't you? This is the (far superior) original version.
Stegbeetle I agree!!
By far the best. Sykes is no bluesy guitarplayer
