The original xbox's controller design actually has a lot of things that were inspired by the dreamcast controller, and microsoft had a really good relationship with Sega so I like to think that the xbox is the sequel to the dreamcast, and then fast foward today the button layout is still similar
Alternative timeline, Sega never left the console market, however, there would be a huge internal restructuring and efforts to correct past mistakes. Before I start, though, let me just say this is just my interpretation and pipe dream. I know Sega would never return to the console market. Like Nintendo, Sega would begin to shift their focus and carve out their own piece of the market. If Sega did survive I could see them taking inspiration from Nintendo. Instead of focusing on power and graphics, they would let their games talk. In this timeline, with the restructuring, and Sega of America and Japan and Europe working together, they would be able to churn out some high quality games because the effort and working together would be there to establish those merits. Sega could market their console as a JRPG hub and port some arcade titles, while also developing some AA or AAA games that appeal to everyone. My only obstacle is third party support because specs wise, I can’t see Sega trying to compete with Microsoft or Sony in that frontier because it’d be too risky. So they would, in my timeline, release a console that goes up to 1080/1440p, and between 30 and 60 fps. Similar to what Nintendo has done. Historically, Capcom might support the new Sega console because of the Dreamcast and Saturn, and I’m sure Ubisoft will port over some of their older games from 2018 and prior. The reason why I chose 1080p and 1440p is because not everyone is interested in 4K and with casuals, and hardcore Sega fans, what matters the most is gameplay and if it’s fun and engaging. Of course the games will look gorgeous and run smoothly, but that won’t be the main emphasis. You made a good point about not making a handheld, but I realized that it would be a good way to keep costs down and not sell at a loss. I think Nintendo is the only company that is able to make some profit with their console sales, with how they’re manufactured and the parts used, so it’s not sold at a loss. I mentioned earlier that Sega has a ton of JRPGs under their belt and arcade-like franchises. I had a discussion with some others recently about the best approach Sega could have if they never left the industry, and it all fell down on their original game gear. That would be what Sega is aiming to do. As casual gamers are growing and portable gaming is becoming more appealing, Sega will release a Switch like hybrid. The dock instead will be a charging pad that moves the signal to the television so you can play like a console or like a handheld. If Sega never left, what games could sell their console? They actually have a diverse and amazing catalog of franchises and untapped IPs that can deliver. These are just a few that come to mind: Sonic, Atlus games (Persona, Shin Megami Tensei), Phantasy Star, Nights Into Dreams, Jet Grind Radio, Skies of Arcadia, Panzer Dragoon, Bayonetta, Shining, Super Monkey Ball, Grandia, Valkyria Chronicles, Yakuza, Shinobi and Power Stone. Like I said, this is just my interpretation of Sega never leaving and pipe dream. You’re right about keeping exclusives locked to their console. These are just some ideas that come to mind for exclusives. *Jet Grind Radio 3 *Nights Dream On (third game in the series) *Sonic Adventure 3 *Grandia IV *Skies of Arcadia Maroon *Shinobi Blood Oath *Panzer Dragoon IV *Condemned to Eternity (soft reboot, a horror franchise) *Super Monkey Ball Banana Mana *Phantasy Star Online (immediately ported) But these are just wishful thinking and unrealistic. If Sega were ever to return back, I would instantly buy their system.
I think the only way Sega could still be making consoles today is if they didn't mess up so much on the Saturn. Had the Saturn actually had a sonic game and didn't have such complex hardware, it could have been a huge success. Also I can see Sega releasing there Dreamcast successor as early as 2003 in order to have a leg up on the competition.
That’s true. There should have been at least 3 main Sonic titles for the Saturn. Only if Adventure was released for the Saturn instead of the Dreamcast. It could have saved the console.
I might be a little late. But with your history I could explain a alternate history if Sega was still around ( with more information ). 1989-1996. SEGA GENESIS Sega would soon release the Sega Genesis as a rival competitor to the upcoming Super Famicom and SNES in the Japanese and North American Markets. A successful advertising campaign was launched in America by Sega of America promoting the Genesis for its high speeds and what it ‘Does’. In this alternate reality. The Sega Genesis would continue sales up till 1997-2000. The estimate of this would be between 35-50 million copies of the console. 32X After a few NOT-successful add-ons to there Genesis. In 1994 came a powerful beast. The 32X which was sold at 199USD. Soon exploding in sales but not for long. In the same year the PlayStation was released and seriously damaged there sales. And so the drawing board was brought up again. SEGA SATURN Soon on launch day in 1995. Sega’s first 3D console ( if you don’t include the 32X add on ) Was a instant success again. Sonic Games were astonishing said by reviewers and the advertisers knew what they were doing! Promoting their graphics and such what. The production of the Saturn continue till 2005. Estimate sales were 45 million. Outselling the N64 Soon Sega walking off with everybody’s money after the success of the Sega Saturn but a new Hardware was shown in front. They saw a great chance and purchased it for there next console. 1997-2004 SEGA DREAMCAST With this new hardware. Sega would immediately get to work and less then a year later the new hardware was shown on the newest console. The Dreamcast, Everybody began the purchase moment of Sonic Adventure in 1998 and Sonic Adventure 2 in 2000. Even if the Dreamcast sales were dented by the PS2. It beat out sales of the GameCube. Production of the Dreamcast ends in 2008. Sale estimated to be 40-50 million. ( btw for the next generations I’ll use names I thought of. ) SEGA ELECTRIC The Dreamcast’s sales began to dry up as the console was on the market for 6 years now, and so Sega began the production of the Electric. With backwards capability so you could play the original Sonic on a high gen console. The Sega electric hit shelf’s in 2004. A full year before the PS3 and Wii. The console was praised for its classics like Halo ( Microsoft’s muticonsole series. ) Estimates for sales of the Electric is 50-60 million. And ended production in 2011. 2012-2019 SEGA DREAMSCAPE. To compete with the upcoming PS4 and Wii. Sega would launch a more ‘Modern’ version of the Sega Dreamcast. Marketed as a proper sequel to the iconic console. It hit shelf’s in 2013 just before the PS4. It is still being produced. Estimated sales is up above 80+ million. SEGA GENESIS, SATURN AND DREAMCAST CLASSIC. With the NES classic and SNES Classic releasing around the time. Sega launches there version alongside the Saturn and Dreamcast. 2019-PRESENT. SEGA ORIGIN. Sega would start production of there latest console. The origin which is a homage to the original consoles up to the Electric. While having outstanding graphics and another set of games. It’s estimated sales is to be 50+ million. And is still in production.
Tbh I feel like the console wars would've continued with all 4 like this instead PlayStation vs Microsoft Nintendo vs Sega With the PS and Xbox fighting for serious gamers and teens And both Nintendo and Sega marketing for families
Nah itll be like this: 1st place - Sony 2nd place - XBox 3rd place - Sega Nintendo? They dont care about the succeeding "console wars," like what they did with the Switch.
By that logic, Sony and Sega would've been too stubborn to leave the hardware market since they were just as serious about it as Nintendo was. And are you saying you wanted Nintendo to leave with that statement? If not, you really should've rephrased your statement better.
If they were still in the market, they would probably have nothing but good arcade games and bad reboots. They learned how to do things by being a third party company and can now make a comeback.
I mostly agree with everything you've said in the video. One thing I see being different though is that, despite Microsoft not having a space in the game console market, I don't think they wouldn't have a presence in game console manufacturing. I think that, if the Dreamcast suceeded, Microsoft and Sega's partnership would develop even further since they provided the software used in the Dreamcast, which runs a modified version of Windows. I think, in a way, Microsoft would still have some form of the Xbox under a Sega console, negating any reason for them to enter the console market to begin with
Technecally the Xbox series X is the Dreamcast five. Though if it was Sega that was there Instead of Microsoft it would more than likely never be called that because they at least were creative or distinctive with there names.
I don't think Halo would have even become that big if Microsoft had made it a PC only franchise. Console shooters before it had the big issue of being really hard to play to absolutely unplayable. Because it was the first big functional shooter on consoles. On PC it would have had way more devastating early competition. I don't think Halo CE would have been that big of a success on a market where it had to directly compete with the best versions of Doom, Quake, Counter Strike, Half-Life and even Unreal.
I actually had a dream where I was in this exact senario. Heres a rundown. Me and my friends were at somekind of stadium or something that looks like E3 or something which is weird because I dont live in the US. We were making fun of the whole PS3 500 USD thing on our way. It was very early in the morning around 5 or 6 and we were marching into the presentation hall. At first it was dark with nothing but the the big screen flashes the bright SEGA logo on to us. The crowd eruppts, cringy kids were yelling SONIC!!! while hardcore fans were yelling some other stuff I cant remember. Soon A spokeperson came out who I cant remember who was he but he was famous in SEGA history. He came out and announce the new sega console for the 7th generation. The SEGA Alpha. It was a disc based console that was made with the collaboration with Microsoft and Toshiba. Microsoft was incharge of SEGA net while Toshiba put in a HD DVD drive. SEGA showed of the SEGA Alpha to the crowd and we were all excited. The SEGA Alpha looked like a bigger Dreamcast but it stood up sideways like the Xbox 360 and the controller looked like a combination of the following( a wii mote, joy cons, glowsticks and psmove) basically the controllers were two glowsticks. Both of them have the same button layout as the xbox 360 with the left stick having the left side of the 360 while the right side having the right side of the 360. SEGA announced the games with the first one being a game called Sonic Adventure 3 (which suspeciously looks like sonic06) and they also announce some newer ips which I cant remember their names. They did announce some games that are maing a return like space channel 5, vector man, burning rangers, crazy taxi and more. They also annouce some japanese games for the SEGA Alpha like sakura ways, hatsune miku, yakuza and more. The price tag was like 450 usd or something. They said there will be a VR headset add on and the ability to watch HD DVD. That is as much as I can remember. I know. A real fever dream.
I'm not 100% sure the Dreamcast could have stuck around until 2006/2007, it was already pretty dated even when the PS2 came out and with it's disc only being able to hold 1 GB of data (which was even less than the Gamecube) I'd think Sega would have had to have released a new console in 2004 to stay relevant which would be interesting, If it was powerful enough to keep up with the PS3 (the 360 probably wouldn't exist in this timeline and the Wii probably would have still existed and still been underpowered) maybe the Dreamcast 2 could stick around through the PS3's lifespan and then maybe Sega and Sony would start putting out consoles the same year after that.
totally agreed, I could imagine if Ringwide, Europe-r, RingEdge & Nu games only exclusive for DC..PS2 and Xbox 1st Gen probably last console for both company
As usual, I blame Sony and Microsoft with their Playstation and Xbox consoles for why Sega left the console wars, since both consoles rely way too heavily on third-party support. Sega and Nintendo have the decency to make their own games. I also dislike Sony because the button scheme of their Playstation consoles is different from every other major console on the market, and Microsoft for acquiring Rareware, resulting in the cancellation of Banjo-Threeie, Conker's Other Bad Day, and Donkey Kong Racing. I'm not going to deny that Sega made a lot of questionable decisions (especially during the Saturn era, namely the cancellation of Sonic X-treme), but I kind of feel it was because they were rushed in trying to stay ahead of both Sony and Nintendo.
I've always loved Sonic much more than I did Mario. I think everything he said in this video are about right. With the modern technology that we have today, I think that SEGA could've made consoles that would compete with PlayStation. They could make some powerful consoles that would run games like mortal kombat and street fighter.
The problem is not if they could make those powerful consoles, the problem is could they make money from selling those consoles. Sega doesn't had a technology issue, they had a trust and money issue and that's what got them in hot water to begin with. They spend a lot of money advertising the Sega CD and Sega 32X but made no money in return from those, same with the Saturn and Dreamcast. Sega also doesn't had many great exclusive games that would help sell their consoles, sure there's Sonic but what else does Sega had? Ristar is not a million seller, Vectorman is not a million seller, Shining Force and Phantasy Star aren't million sellers, Virtua Fighter is not a million seller, certainly not Shenmue and Skies of Arcadia. Don't get me wrong a lot of those are good games but they don't help Sega made the bucks they need to survive and compete. Sega need a ton of trump cards other than Sonic and they just couldn't make many.
4 Might be possible but sales would be split across all of them, thus reducing the overall sales on each one and developers would have to spend more time and money to put games on all 4 of them. I have a feeling one of them just wouldn't sell well in this universe,
I think it more so relies on how successful the saturn was, I imagine the saturn probably killed it and the dreamcast was more so trying to put things back on track than actually being successful
ive watched a million whatifalthist videos so i was prepared for someone to do this or something like it (though i didnt expect you you do it) though something else id like to comment on is that seganet was not as much like xbox-live,it was more of a game oriented ISP. and id imagine sega being a bit more imaginative, but id agree that overall the indusry wouldnt be too different (as far as consoles are concerned),PC would be better or worse (depending on how microsoft cope with steam or if it exists at all) and id imagine valve would make (or at least try to,DXVK was only around in 2017ish,and theres the butterfly effect) proton (what makes windows games run on linux) earlier (cause the main reason valve gives linux so much love is that they have always been worried about microsoft becoming like apple and trying to destroy steam ever since they made the windows store),which could have large effects on the steam machine (cause it may be able to play alot more games) and linux support. (i know linux and the steam machine are not very impactful, but the steam machine basically made the steam controller and linux gaming, two major things in my personal day to day gaming experience) one asterisk i must add is that maybe paid online wouldnt exist (as i said seganet =/= xboxlive)
Also, the GBA Sonic games and Super Monkey Ball JR wouldn't ever happen, and Rare would probably still be making Donkey Kong games since Microsoft would have little reason to buy them and force them to make games for Xbox instead of Nintendo consoles, considering Microsoft was against releasing the Xbox in the first place, and in this timeline it wouldn't even do well in the first place.
I think Sega would be good at being a middle ground between casual and hardcore gamers. As long with appealing to children and adults. I view it as a combination of Nintendo and Sony's Playstations. Just thinking about Sega making a new console makes me excited, I won't lie
A thing you're forgetting is that Microsoft bought Bungie as well as Rare because of the OG Direct-X Box launch. Halo would have ended up a Mac OS game just like it's predecessor, Marathon. Nintendo would have kept Rare is a developer. Also many of the games of the Xbox that it was launched with was Sega titles. Microsoft would have floundered before even trying to get into the space. The other thing worth noting, is that Nintendo is a toy company first, and an video game company second. They are always trying to come up with some fun new way to play. They are not always going to be chasing the highest of tech, hense some of the weird things like the Wii controller or the NDS with it's touch screen. Sega is also an Arcade company first and a home console company second... in this scenario and originally. So more than likely any sort of advancement for the home market would have been put into an Arcade cabinet first. (See Naomi and Dreamcast) though usually downplayed to some degree to make the home console more affordable. Sega had a lot of ground to make up, their sega sports games of the Dreamcast didn't compete well with EA Sports titles that everyone for some reason clamors for, and were available on the other platforms and not on the Sega Hardware. For this timeline to have happened, it would have taken Sega of America and Sega of Japan to not have butted heads in the 32x/Saturn time. If they had agreed to make the 32x basically a Saturn upgrade to go with the tower of power, they could have launched the Saturn games before the hardware was fully ready itself because with the Sega CD and the 32x working together (assuming it was a 1 to 1 chipset between the Saturn to the 32x) would have basically already had everything that the Saturn needed to get a soft launch and then the Saturn hardware itself could have been a more compact (and power efficient) tower of power that could have still been backwards compatible to the previous generations of hardware (mainly Genesis). This would have position Sega better against Sony since there was already an install base and they could have released cartridge versions of Saturn games for "Fast Load versions" of smaller games because CD loading was slow. The other thing they would have had to do is find a way to make development easier. Sony's big success was because of how open they were about the PSX, but even some of the best games for that console took advantages of the way the console worked and were major hack jobs to the hardware. For one of the best examples of this, look to Crash Bandicoot. Assuming Sega made this better version of the Saturn easier to code for. They could have been a bigger threat to Sony. One of Sony's advantages comes from how the system could actually do polygons while the original Saturn could do sprite trickery to make 3d. If they had just integrated actual 3d for the Saturn/32x in this timeline, They would have had a competitive edge. From there Sega would have basically positioned themselves as the backwards compatibility company, so the Dreamcast would have to have, at the very least, Saturn CD backwards compatibility, at worst have a cartridge slot (maybe a slotable one similar to how Nintendo did the Gameboy player?), but some of the re release games (Daytona USA for example) would have likely had a different name for this reason. Now assuming they managed to keep EA happy during the Saturn era, and the console they ultimately made was just a little more powerful (slightly faster CPU?), the Dreamcast wouldn't have floundered as bad but the Sega Sports line likely never would have came to be (or maybe it would have and it would have been used in the arcades). Because of Sega's online setup, They would have been the king of online play until the other next generations started coming out with the PS2 and eventually Nintendo's Gamecube network adapters. But because of the online play being heavily established because of Sega, those consoles would have likely had that tech earlier to try and compete. The difference is that Sega had their online services already established while Sony and Nintendo would have to still figure it out. We all know how that turned out. Sony did alright once everquest came out, but Nintendo stayed out of it till broadband adapter came out... but what game took advantage of the broadband adapter? Phantasy Star Online... a Sega game... which the Gamecube wouldn't have gotten had Sega stuck around. Nintendo's Gamecube would have floundered more because many of it's best 3rd party games were Sega titles. By this measure, Sony also wouldn't have gotten as much support from the games industry because Sega has the online play everyone wanted, especially with sports and potentially shooters (Quake 3 Arena was on this thing). By about this time, the Dreamcast would be showing it's age with PS2 on the market and Nintendo's Gamecube floundering harder than it did. That it would be time for an upgrade. But No, it wouldn't have been called the Dreamcast 2. No, It would need a far stronger name to represent how much faster and more powerful it would be. Originally the Dreamcast got the codename of Katana, So perhaps they could codename it MPACT (More Powerful At-home Console Technology). At this point I could see Sega Jumping from the MIPS and arm to PPC. which would assist with leveraging Nintendo's, at the time, better hardware with the faster processor, but if they were going to go PPC, they would need far more power than that single core. So they leverage what Apple was using at the time. Something similar to what Microsoft used for the Xbox 360 but perhaps be a quad core instead would be good. This would give them a significant power boost without making the new system excessively expensive leading to a console that could be easy to develop for as well as dominate as a platform for the next generation of games. This would be the first time that Sega would integrate a hard drive into their system, but the Disc they would use... Would be the upcoming Blu-ray drive. If Sega beats Sony to the punch to use their tech with Blu-ray and integrate Blu-ray playback, Sony's PS3 success would be hampered since it wasn't the only console using blu-rays. This of course would have been the end of HD DVD way earlier as well. The main reason why Blu-Ray instead of HDDVD? DRM integration into the disc. That's right, DRM. The thing most retro gamers hate to run into. This would be the main reason Sega would have gone this route, the second being that data space size. Recall with how when Microsoft released the HDDVD drive for the 360 how it was just for movie playback instead of playing games? it was for two reasons, 1 the hddvd didn't have a good copy protection setup, and the integrated dvd drive in the console already had a DRM built in to protect the games and system. If they made it so that the external drive could play the games, they'd have less control over what was in that external drive. This could go much further, but I am tired of writing all of this. Needless to say with the hardware choice shown, they would have basically had a stronger Xbox 360 in the Sega MPACT that had bluray functionality before Sony even released the PS3 if they managed to get it ready in time for Blu-ray to be released in mid 2006. This could have lead to Sony holding back on the PS3 till they had a better grasp of what to do with it (better dev kit?). This would have also lead to the Wii likely being something at least a little more capable of competing (Better hardware) but ultimately would have likely still been the motion capture gameplay, because once again, Nintendo is the company of fun, if they even bothered making anything beyond the Gamecube for the home console space. I could see Nintendo retreating to the Handheld space which they clearly dominate in.
Sega can focus on a full fledge VR system style or whatever new innovation they decide to do. Also, they should focus more on Sega titles they made it into the greatest of all times list: Nights Virtua Fighter Jet Set Radio Shenmue Outrun Sega Rally Championship Sega Daytona USA Gunstar Heroes Panzer Dragoon Saga Streets of Rage Virtua Racing These games can become very successful is Sega focused on these titles and revive them.
Although I love SEGA as a company and their consoles a lot my first ever console was an Xbox so it’s probably better if they stay out of the console business 😅
Halo possibly could've been a Dreamcast game as Microsoft had a very good working relationship with Sega at the time and it was even discussed at some point that the Xbox could be distributed by Sega in Japan.
yeah if sega released dreamcast 2 then it wouldn't be competing with xbox 360, microsoft and sega would be teaming up to beat sony, why, think about it, sega dreamcast was made by sega and microsoft with windows ce. and microsoft and sega made sonic 06 together, which was the game that ruined the sonic franchise
Good video, but i think it misses out on the crucial detail about the co-operation between SEGA and Microsoft. Microsoft had a hand in the development of the Dreamcast too, and many games literally used the Windows CE as a framework on the Sega Dreamcast, using the DirectX framework, etc. So, if Sega never left the console market, Halo could have been a flagship product on the Sega Dreamcast then.
Right and bungie at that time never had a publisher for Halo and changed the original design of the game from what we know today which meant the publisher would have been more likely SEGA of america. Which of course Halo would have become a SEGA franchise if it had become a hit on DC.
The original xbox copped most of its design from the dreamcast either officially or inspiring. I believe Microsoft and Sega would have formed a partnership one way or another, and Halo would have been a Sega exclusive. The hopes in all this that digital wouldn't be currently killing the industry as Microsoft is a leader in that push slowly following in their footsteps in Sony, and Nintendo is being forced into it because of how well the corporate elite has brainwashed people out of ownership and to believe quality is better than quality. Or nothing would be different, and Sega would have just taken Microsofts spot for everything. Xbox gamers score the lowest on brand and IP loyalty, and the most on ignorant impulse purchases.
Dreamcast had windows software in it so i think Microsoft would involve themselves, probably would continue to partner up with sega in that, microsoft makes the software and sega the heardware.
Xbox and Dreamcast controller were almost exactly the same. Had the 2 memory card slots on the controllers had the 2 triggers ABXY paid online service. And had all the sega exclusives
Nintendo was not stubborn, they are still winning the handheld market and Pokemon as well as Zelda and Mario games are selling like hotcake so there's really no reason for them to leave either. Sega leave cause they ran out of money so they couldn't afford to make another console, just games from that point.
Microsoft actually lost over $13 billion off the Xbox alone that generation since they were losing over $230 off of each unit being sold selling it at the PS2's price point to compete with them. When that was failing, they opted instead to compete with Nintendo sales wise since Nintendo was in 2nd place for more than 3 years. It wouldn't be until Microsoft dropped the price of said system even more by $170 that they were able to just BARELY beat out Nintendo. But it came with a very heavy cost to Microsoft in the long run! Nintendo did however when win when it came to the software to hardware attachment rate for their hardware compared to its competition.
If Sega made a console during the ps3, 360, wii era then that would've succeeded bc their ideas & tech was way ahead of it's time. & we would've had home VR gaming wayyy early. Something called Sega Rift?
I'd much rather see Sega back in the console market than Microsoft still being present in the console market, their consoles keep sucking each new generation is revealed!!
@@shinkansenhype8694 I'd much rather have physical copies, however, makes sense since physical Xbox One games require download patches anyway. I think a Switch is a better investment than an Xbone since most if not all of the Switch games are actually physical and Xbone games get ported to the Switch.
I think If sega never became a 3rd party developer all the sonic games that I will talk about most likely won’t exist: Sonic advance 1,2,3 Sonic rush(all not existing because in the video it says sega would not do handheld consoles) Shadow the hedgehog Sonic 06 Sonic lost world Sonic boom trilogy Sonic forces Now here are the new games that could have existed: Sonic adventure 3 (replacing sonic 06) Sonic extreme(2005 canceled sonic game in are timeline) Sonic adventure 1 and 2 remakes Games that would have had gameplay changes: sonic unleashed (daytime stages with adventure gameplay) Sonic colors(adventure gameplay and there is no boost wisp)(both games not having boost gameplay because sonic rush inspired the gameplay for those 2 games this timeline Where Sega never became a 3rd party developer sonic unleashed and sonic colors would be the last games because Sega didn’t make that much mainline games in the early and mid 90’s
Only a few like Jet Set Radio, Panzer Dragoon Orta, and Shenmue 2 went to Xbox. A majority of Sega's other IP made the jump to PS2 and GameCube: Sonic Adventure 1 & 2, Evolution Worlds, Phantasy Star Online, and Skies of Arcadia made the jump to the GameCube whereas Virtua Fighter 4, Altered Beast, Shinobi, NiGHTS, and Sega Rally landed on the PS2.
Not sure about that, Sega had made crappy Sonic games before 2006 but maybe that Sonic game would be in a better position than it did nowadays. What Sega did in the GBA, GameCube, PS2, and Wii era were good though, we got new franchise like Madworld, Bayonetta, Conduit, Super Monkey Ball, Billy Hatcher, and Yakuza as well as returning franchise like Sakura Wars, NiGHTS, Samba de Amigo, Gunstar Heroes, Guardian Heroes, Phantasy Star, and Altered Beast. We also see them work with Nintendo on projects like F-Zero GX.
If Sega survived, I think around the DS to 3DS area, or even the switch area, they could have made hand-helds, maybe way more superior to Nintendo. But we know how that usually goes.
Sega had a tendency to released their games on other platforms even when they are still making consoles so yeah it's their own fault that they failed. When you're competing you don't help your competitors beat you. Fantasy Zone 1 & 2 on Famicom, Shinobi and Space Harrier on NES, Sonic on PC, Thunder Spirits (Thunder Force III) for Super NES, Lady Stalker on Super Famicom, and Golden Axe on Turbo Grafx-16 should've never happen.
Personally, I don't see it as a huge deal if people mispronounce it. From a technical standpoint, Sega is pronounced 'se' as in seven, and 'ga' as in gawk. The only reason why you hear 'say gah' from their startup sound, and such, is because they drag it out to be like a song; So, in Japanese, when you drag out the 'Eh' it becomes an 'ay' sound (likewise 'ga' becomes 'gaah'.) Either way, Sega is just an abbreviation for "Service Games," so it really doesn't matter.
@@Namaleas It doesn't matter. But it just irritates my ears and I don't enjoy watching youtube videos that mispronounce it. I grew up in the 1990s, Sega's brightest years! I played the games, watched the commercials. To hear these young youtubers of today who obviously didn't grow up in the Sega era, constantly mispronounce it, just aggravates my ears. Like it's funny and cute at first, then painful on repetition. To be frank, it makes me turn off the video.
I have always thought that dreamcast 2 is Xbox 360. There are a lot of similarities between Sega and Microsoft, also Sega, during the saturn period, released games on PCs as Microsoft is doing, the focus on the online infrastructure, and also Peter Moore who was president of Sega American and then of Xbox...
I don't think Sega would have waited till 2006-07 to release a successor to Dreamcast it would probably be more like 2003-04. It would probably also fail though because they are idiots. With systems past Genesis they focused on one type of game too much which keeps you from true success like the vast and varied libraries of PS2/Wii. With Saturn it was fighters.... with Dreamcast it was arcade style games while missing big arcade titles(Daytona 2/Scud Race).... and with Dreamcast 2 it would have been focusing too much on Sonic games like they have been for last 20+ years.
I think it was inevitable that sega would fail. Even if they made a Dreamcast 2 or 3 they’d never catch up to Sony or Nintendo. Similar to Microsoft however Microsoft is rich and can afford to stay afloat.
if sega survived then will be lvl of nintendo or more than it but i think sega will collab with nintendo because both of them has low budget because they lost there money to fight sony but when they collab they can beat sony and the company name is nintendo sega my personal opinion
Lots of douchebags back then say how Sega sucked at making games and consoles, then 30 years later come crawling back after seeing PlayStation and Xbox's playerbase saying "Wooow Sega's so nostalgic" like wtf? one moment you hate Sega for making games then come crawling back praising it as if it's the Messiah. The true reason behind Sega losing the console wars was due to unneeded backlash. All the consoles and some games were great, and even if a critic saw the TINIEST BUG, they'd go full Angry Video Game Nerd saying "You're a poopy head" and just start cancelling Sega on twitter. If you're one of these people, get out of here. You don't belong here. Sega was a dominant console manufacturer, and you ruined it. Imagine the consoles they would have had now in 2021. Sega was doing fine, the only glitchy and bad game I noticed from Sonic was Sonic '06 and Sonic R (Sonic R is here because of the slippery controls, that's basically it).
The original xbox's controller design actually has a lot of things that were inspired by the dreamcast controller, and microsoft had a really good relationship with Sega so I like to think that the xbox is the sequel to the dreamcast, and then fast foward today the button layout is still similar
The Xbox just feels like a watered-down PlayStation given the Xbox one and series X
*Jet Grind Radio 3
*Nights Dream On (third game in the series)
*Sonic Adventure 3
*Grandia IV
*Skies of Arcadia Maroon
*Shinobi Blood Oath
*Panzer Dragoon IV
*Condemned to Eternity (soft reboot, a horror franchise)
*Super Monkey Ball Banana Mana
*Phantasy Star Online (immediately ported)
But these are just wishful thinking and unrealistic. If Sega were ever to return back, I would instantly buy their system.
That's exactly how I see it. Good job
Sega probably won't return back to the console industry.
Billy and The Giant Egg is a pretty good one
06 would definitely be SA3 and development would go much smoother since they'd understand the hardware better.
Fuck Nintendo and there weak ass shit hardware and shit games
I think the only way Sega could still be making consoles today is if they didn't mess up so much on the Saturn. Had the Saturn actually had a sonic game and didn't have such complex hardware, it could have been a huge success. Also I can see Sega releasing there Dreamcast successor as early as 2003 in order to have a leg up on the competition.
That’s true. There should have been at least 3 main Sonic titles for the Saturn. Only if Adventure was released for the Saturn instead of the Dreamcast. It could have saved the console.
I grew up Sega starting with my first console the Master system so yeah I do miss Sega
Enjoyed the video 👍👍👍👍👍
SAAME
If SEGA survive 2K will still be under SegaSports instead of the greedy Take Two
That's Correct 💯💯💯💯
I love Sega I miss Sega making game console
I might be a little late. But with your history I could explain a alternate history if Sega was still around ( with more information ).
1989-1996.
SEGA GENESIS
Sega would soon release the Sega Genesis as a rival competitor to the upcoming Super Famicom and SNES in the Japanese and North American Markets. A successful advertising campaign was launched in America by Sega of America promoting the Genesis for its high speeds and what it ‘Does’.
In this alternate reality. The Sega Genesis would continue sales up till 1997-2000.
The estimate of this would be between 35-50 million copies of the console.
32X
After a few NOT-successful add-ons to there Genesis. In 1994 came a powerful beast. The 32X which was sold at 199USD. Soon exploding in sales but not for long. In the same year the PlayStation was released and seriously damaged there sales. And so the drawing board was brought up again.
SEGA SATURN
Soon on launch day in 1995.
Outselling the N64
Soon Sega walking off with everybody’s money after the success of the Sega Saturn but a new Hardware was shown in front. They saw a great chance and purchased it for there next console.
1997-2004
SEGA DREAMCAST
With this new hardware.
( btw for the next generations I’ll use names I thought of. )
SEGA ELECTRIC
The Dreamcast’s sales began to dry up as the console was on the market for 6 years now, and so Sega began the production of the Electric.
2012-2019
SEGA DREAMSCAPE.
In that reality i would be proud of have a Sega Origin
Tbh I feel like the console wars would've continued with all 4 like this instead
PlayStation vs Microsoft
Nintendo vs Sega
With the PS and Xbox fighting for serious gamers and teens
And both Nintendo and Sega marketing for families
Nah itll be like this:
1st place - Sony
2nd place - XBox
3rd place - Sega
Nintendo? They dont care about the succeeding "console wars," like what they did with the Switch.
I come from the future, sega will rejoin in the console business on Tuesday, 16 November 2032. The name being SEGA FICTUS
"Nintendo was too stubborn to leave the console market".
Bro! That's exactly what I was just thinking!
By that logic, Sony and Sega would've been too stubborn to leave the hardware market since they were just as serious about it as Nintendo was.
And are you saying you wanted Nintendo to leave with that statement? If not, you really should've rephrased your statement better.
@@G.L.999 Who asked?
I miss Sega I still own and play my mega drive saturn and dreamcast today would definitely buy a new sega console if the ever return
What if Sega defeated Nintendo?
If they were still in the market, they would probably have nothing but good arcade games and bad reboots. They learned how to do things by being a third party company and can now make a comeback.
WITH A NEW HOME GAME CONSOLE INCLUDING A HAND HELD CONSOLE!
nah they're almost bankrupt
you've got it backwards. They did that BECAUSE they were no longer around in the market.
Real talk, Sega never died- they have always lived in our hearts. ❤️
Sega Dreamcast 2 would have been called Sega Sunshine
Technically don't cut it. Yes they are the successor, but Sega has games on all systems that they could be releasing on their own console.
It doesn't take a rocket scientist to see that MS/XBOX took over where Sega left off (similar demographic, 'tude, etc.)
Didn't the DC use Microsoft ME OS? and some Sega exclusives eventually become XB exclusives?
@@leeweesquee Yes, Dreamcast developers had the option of using Windows CE ported to DC as a base for their game.
Sega made a lot of dumb decision even before Sony and Microsoft got into the gaming schemes. It's their own fault for why they failed the Dreamcast.
Unpopular Idea: Microsoft and Sega Team up in this timeline, Mircrosoft helps make the software Sega makes the games. That type of partnership.
What if Nintendo remade the 8-Bit era? You know, next-Gen iterations of the NES, Game Boy, Game Boy Color Pokémon Pikachu and the Pokémon Mini.
You don't say why four different consoles could exist together
4 Might be possible but sales would be split across all of them, thus reducing the overall sales on each one and developers would have to spend more time and money to put games on all 4 of them. I have a feeling one of them just wouldn't sell well in this universe,
I think it more so relies on how successful the saturn was, I imagine the saturn probably killed it and the dreamcast was more so trying to put things back on track than actually being successful
ive watched a million whatifalthist videos so i was prepared for someone to do this or something like it (though i didnt expect you you do it)
though something else id like to comment on is that seganet was not as much like xbox-live,it was more of a game oriented ISP.
and id imagine sega being a bit more imaginative, but id agree that overall the indusry wouldnt be too different (as far as consoles are concerned),PC would be better or worse (depending on how microsoft cope with steam or if it exists at all)
and id imagine valve would make (or at least try to,DXVK was only around in 2017ish,and theres the butterfly effect) proton (what makes windows games run on linux) earlier (cause the main reason valve gives linux so much love is that they have always been worried about microsoft becoming like apple and trying to destroy steam ever since they made the windows store),which could have large effects on the steam machine (cause it may be able to play alot more games) and linux support. (i know linux and the steam machine are not very impactful, but the steam machine basically made the steam controller and linux gaming, two major things in my personal day to day gaming experience)
one asterisk i must add is that maybe paid online wouldnt exist (as i said seganet =/= xboxlive)
What if Nintendo evolved? you know, if Nintendo expanded into various hardware including computers, Mobile, and video games.
This is a really good analysis
That will be a good idea for the future.
7:38-8:05 this guy gets it
I think Xbox is sega spiritual replacement
I think Sega would be good at being a middle ground between casual and hardcore gamers. As long with appealing to children and adults. I view it as a combination of Nintendo and Sony's Playstations. Just thinking about Sega making a new console makes me excited, I won't lie
Never say never.
Never seen that game before! Looks pretty fun!
It's not fun
Sega should make another console.
It shouldn be a console with alot of sonic games that are now on the ds and wii, maybe a handheld
@@thepandamc4093 maybe to you but it should be like an Xbox.
Sega can focus on a full fledge VR system style or whatever new innovation they decide to do.
Also, they should focus more on Sega titles they made it into the greatest of all times list:
Nights
Virtua Fighter
Jet Set Radio
Shenmue
Outrun
Sega Rally Championship
Sega Daytona USA
Gunstar Heroes
Panzer Dragoon Saga
Streets of Rage
Virtua Racing
These games can become very successful is Sega focused on these titles and revive them.
Although I love SEGA as a company and their consoles a lot my first ever console was an Xbox so it’s probably better if they stay out of the console business 😅
If Sega stayed in the market, Neptune from the Neptunia games would be a very different person.
They could’nt do to epic games they would want to compete with Sega because they were a similar company
Halo possibly could've been a Dreamcast game as Microsoft had a very good working relationship with Sega at the time and it was even discussed at some point that the Xbox could be distributed by Sega in Japan.
Just imagine the sonic riders series on Dreamcast or free sonic riders on the next console
yeah if sega released dreamcast 2 then it wouldn't be competing with xbox 360, microsoft and sega would be teaming up to beat sony, why, think about it, sega dreamcast was made by sega and microsoft with windows ce. and microsoft and sega made sonic 06 together, which was the game that ruined the sonic franchise
That wouldn’t happen and Dreamcast wasn’t made by Microsoft
no
Dreamcast didn’t have window ce
@@firestriker3580 if u had owned one it would of said sega windows ce
@@firestriker3580 it literally has a windows ce logo on the right side of the console lol
What game is playing in this video and for what system? It looks like what you might call Sonic Galaxy
The sega game gear would like a word with you...
I also think if PlayStation didn't stop making Handheld Console like PSP and PSVita, Nintendo would have not survived.
Sega consoles in the 7 Generation would be called “the Sega Neptune”.
Dreamcast had windows software in it so i think Microsoft would involve themselves, probably would continue to partner up with sega in that, microsoft makes the software and sega the heardware.
*hardware*
I could see 4 console manufacturers. Maybe they’d use similar architecture but there’s room.
Xbox and Dreamcast controller were almost exactly the same. Had the 2 memory card slots on the controllers had the 2 triggers ABXY paid online service. And had all the sega exclusives
Ironic that I got a Nintendo Switch commercial when I watched this video...
Nintendo was not stubborn, they are still winning the handheld market and Pokemon as well as Zelda and Mario games are selling like hotcake so there's really no reason for them to leave either. Sega leave cause they ran out of money so they couldn't afford to make another console, just games from that point.
Could imagine a modern day version of the game gear?💙❤️🦔
Sonic shuffle be like
Microsoft actually lost over $13 billion off the Xbox alone that generation since they were losing over $230 off of each unit being sold selling it at the PS2's price point to compete with them.
What if Microsoft and saga were same like now
We’ll have Halo being a Sega franchise. That would be sick and help sell the console.
That will be a great idea
If Sega made a console during the ps3, 360, wii era then that would've succeeded bc their ideas & tech was way ahead of it's time. & we would've had home VR gaming wayyy early. Something called Sega Rift?
SEGA Wii ☠️
What if Nintendo and Sony actually made the SNES CD bc if they did, then there'll still be Nintendo vs Sega.
What if Atari survived after 1996?
Microsoft should've left and Sega should've stay
Id buy one
i miss sega =(
they still making exclusiv games for nintendo and sony
I'd much rather see Sega back in the console market than Microsoft still being present in the console market, their consoles keep sucking each new generation is revealed!!
@@protoluigi2047 also you may as well get a PC because all of there games are both on console and PC.
@@shinkansenhype8694 I'd much rather have physical copies, however, makes sense since physical Xbox One games require download patches anyway. I think a Switch is a better investment than an Xbone since most if not all of the Switch games are actually physical and Xbone games get ported to the Switch.

All sega consoles sucked .
All Xbox consoles sucked.
All Sony consoles sucked.
4:57 Unless SEGA put a DVD player in the Dreamcast in an alternate timeline.
It would be called the Sega Uranus 😅😂
I think If sega never became a 3rd party developer all the sonic games that I will talk about most likely won’t exist:
Sonic advance 1,2,3
Sonic rush(all not existing because in the video it says sega would not do handheld consoles)
Shadow the hedgehog
Sonic 06
Sonic lost world
Sonic boom trilogy
Sonic forces
Now here are the new games that could have existed:
Sonic adventure 3 (replacing sonic 06)
Sonic extreme(2005 canceled sonic game in are timeline)
Sonic adventure 1 and 2 remakes
Games that would have had gameplay changes: sonic unleashed (daytime stages with adventure gameplay)
Sonic colors(adventure gameplay and there is no boost wisp)(both games not having boost gameplay because sonic rush inspired the gameplay for those 2 games
this timeline Where Sega never became a 3rd party developer sonic unleashed and sonic colors would be the last games because Sega didn’t make that much mainline games in the early and mid 90’s
Didn't the DC use Microsoft ME OS? and some Sega exclusives eventually become XB exclusives?
Only a few like Jet Set Radio, Panzer Dragoon Orta, and Shenmue 2 went to Xbox. A majority of Sega's other IP made the jump to PS2 and GameCube: Sonic Adventure 1 & 2, Evolution Worlds, Phantasy Star Online, and Skies of Arcadia made the jump to the GameCube whereas Virtua Fighter 4, Altered Beast, Shinobi, NiGHTS, and Sega Rally landed on the PS2.
It didn't use Windows ME or 2000, as a matter of fact, neither OS was out when the DC released. The DC used Windows CE
If the Dreamcast had a successor console I think it would be called the Sega Neptune
That sounds about right Alternate 2006 oh man the Sega Neptune then in 2013 Sega Uranus is coming out in November then 2018 Sega Pluto
But what if Xbox 360 came out while Dreamcast? I don’t care if Microsoft left the market.
Sega is still around making games for other game consoles
Be great for the market if Sega finally jumped back into the fray.
If sega survived sonic o6 would be good
Not sure about that, Sega had made crappy Sonic games before 2006 but maybe that Sonic game would be in a better position than it did nowadays.
@@VOAN yeah but the only reason sonic o6 was bad mainly was because Nintendo was mainly rushing them
Sonic 06 not on the wii because it not powerful enough
I could see Microsoft partnering with Sega if they still made consoles
@@VOAN Well, if Sega never did any of these things, especially the Sega 32X, CD, and the too early release of the Sega Saturn. They could've survived.
And Yakuza became dreamcast 2 release
Not true
@@firestriker3580 why is that?
@@firestriker3580the first game was 2005 though and if Sega still make console im sure it will become their priority
Sega should have shut their mouths up able discontinuing the Dreamcast. It was still a well selling console up to that point.
what if the xbox survived
-chaz in some other timeline
They did survive the step up of SEGA hardware is the google chromebook
yakuza series on sega
Next video, what if sonic 06 was good
the new sonic games was great to me i love and enjoy them in my honest difference unpopular opinion
Whats that game u playing?
I miss Sega 😢
It's pronounced Say Gah. Play a Sonic game on Genesis. Watch a TV ad from the era. Why do so many youtubers mispronounce Sega?
Call of duty would of bin on the sega consoles in this timeline
Imagine a #DreamcastPro
i honestly wish sega didn't have to go
Nah it wouldn’t be bigger sales than the GameCube sales and it wouldn’t be 30 or 40 million.
Nah Sonic’s games weren’t that great when Sega was making consoles
Unfortunately sega stop made consoles and alot of awsome games
Like golden axe
Street of rage
Revenge of shinobi and alot of games titles
No XBOX 360 means no standardized controller for PC.
😮
