I have been plus size through 70s 80s 90sto this preasamt day and it was impossible to buy trendy stuff in England we had Evans shop which is still around but was very old fashioned. I think people had to make their own clothes to get anything on trend , material wasn’t good back then stiff , no stretch . I’m 62 and have the best clothes Iv ever had in my life . I love fashion and am envious that it still moly’s wasn’t around before . I think they thought we were invisible . And I wasn’t even that busy g back and n the day .
@@something.something189 90s style is booming where I live among high schoolers. Over-alls with one strap not buckled is very common. Though, I was a teen in the 90s, but I was one of those into the 70s, so I dressed like a hippie with a slight spattering of grunge. :D

Seriously, her knees were showing, and when she moved you could catch some thigh too. NEVER would have happened in the 1910s! That dress is even too modern for the 20s! And the “1920s” dress is a1930s silhouette. If it were really 20s the waist would be lower.
So in summation designers have never, not at any point, catered to a plus sized figure and with rare exceptions that still don't. I am greatful that Christian Seriano is out there blazing a trail but the scaled up versions of "regular" sized designs are bu!!$#it. Specialized designs emphasizing curves are what are called for. As is recognition that womens bodies come in various shapes, not just sizes. Not all size 16s are created equal. Even if you had ten women who usually wear a 16 try on the same garment it would flatter some and not others just because of differences in height and weight distribution. Too often women try on something that is the workg cut for them and conclude their body is mishapen. The reality is the clothes were not designed with that figure in mind.
I hate it when designers try to cater to plus size but don't realize they need to change certain measurements/proportions to create the same silluhette as the non-plus size. Like adding material to a skirt so it stays full, or lowering the waist line to account for bigger chests.
Plus size shouldn't exist. I'm overweight, and I don't even belong to plus size, but the largest in regular size, and I already have health issues. Being overweight or let alone obese is not healthy, we all need to wake up!

I know skinny people who practically subsist off junk food or don't exercise and others who smoke. They're not healthy. It's almost like weight doesn't equal health or something.

It all adds up, literally. Younger bodies can withstand adverse conditions, but they use up resources quicker than they should and you pay the price later. Young knees may be able to withstand 300lbs on them daily, but by the time you hit 40, the cartilage will be worn down and it's too late to easily undo that damage. 300lb footballer or 300 couch potato, it's too much weight regardless
I do. It comes down to proportions and having to design clothes differently for different shapes. I’ll give you an example. I bought a fit and flare dress that hit at the knees. It fit...except it was 8 inches shorter in the back (I carry my weight in the lower half). It was indecent if I had to bend.
I think most clothing is made for “average” height women, if you are shorter than 5’ 4” or taller than 5’ 7” clothes aren’t “made for you”.I am 5 feet tall, my roommate is 6 feet tall. Both of us have trouble finding clothes that fit perfectly, it’s not a competition.😂
Some of the clothes look very matronly which look jarring with these very young glamorously beautiful models. also I heard that Amelia Earhart's short-lived clothing line in the 1930s was the first to introduce the idea to the fashion industry that women sometimes have different sized tops and bottoms. Yeah I can't help but think the shoulder pads for the 50s dress are all wrong
We tend to have an idea of vintage fashion based on movies or other media of the time, however, very few people probably dressed like that unless it was a very special occasion and depending on what time period they probably still didn't because it wasn't considered decent. While this video is definitely not accurate, a lot of clothing for all size-types would be considered matronly by today's standards. On top of all this, for a very long time, women tended to make their own clothing, especially when times got tough.

When growing up during late 60's, 70''s and the first couple of years of the 80's I was extremely thin and considered as underweight . Finding clothes for me was easy to do. My mother was a curvy woman , I never was aware that her clothing choices were limited. She managed to dress fashionably although she was a size 16 or 18. I of course wanted to be that tall curvy woman who was always impeccably dressed. Little did I know that finding clothes for her body type was so difficult and the only store she shopped at was Lane Bryant or she bought patterns and had her clothes made by a neighborhood seamstress . Now older I'm also fury . I have no problem finding clothes that fit my body.

'fat acceptance' has near always been a thing. In the victorian era - the bigger, plumper you were, generally, the wealthier you were/percieved to be 😊
Today she would definitely be considered average size (she is not plus whatsoever) but back in the day people were a lot thinner due to a number of factors, so she would have been seen as "bigger" in comparison.
You never would have gotten away with that 40's dress in Britain. Rationing was in full force. I didn't expect that style of dress to be featured for the decade
The supposed 1910s dress was the prettiest and had the most flattering cut. The model looked very good wearing it. No woman in the 1910s would have worn a dress with a faux front wrap which exposed that much leg with each step.)

In Ireland it's very difficult to find clothes in a 20 or above in a regular clothes shop, most plus size lines are only available online and not in store unless you go to boutiques or specialist shops and they tend to be expensive and or old fashioned or for evening wear not everyday trendy casual wear
Thank you for doing this video. Plus sized folks have always been made to feel less than, even by well meaning loved ones..It feels wonderful to be seen and acknowledged in a positive way.
Ugh. Some of those fashions. I'm "plus sized" and not riddled with diseases like people would think. Not everyone is going to be sick or overeating. Those women are very pretty.
The only thing they get right here is that plus sized women have been put in unflattering clothing for eons. As a child of a plus sized woman (and, awkwardly, the only one (male and female) in the family who is not plus-sized by fashion standards), I openly have seen over the years how much my mom and also older sister struggled to find things that were interesting and flattering at the same time. What I saw throughout the 90s and 2000s was either designers pulling off tents as shirts and dresses in order to hide the "unslightly fat rolls" or the exact same style as the "non plus size", just scaled up and put in the far corner of the store. These style may or may also make them look like an overstuffed sausage. Even worse if you were a short plus sized lady. Good luck finding stuff that fit your limbs, but don't dig into your shoulders, bust, hips, and/or booty OR drag on the floor. Let's go into shoes now... Um boots. If you're one of the plus sized ladies who have some serious muscle on those legs (which is extremely common), guess what? The boots won't fit around them. It's devastating to see them try to cram their legs into these tiny cylinders of fabric anyway because they want boots (or worse, say "oh no, I can't wear that. I'm too fat"). I wonder if it's harming them? Is it pinching nerves or cutting off circulation? I'm not even going to go into swimwear or lingerie. More or less, it took forever to get my mom into a one piece because she'd say things like "no one wants to see me in something that tight". Now, I am optimistic that fashion directed towards plus-sized ladies is a thing. I am slowly starting to see stuff specifically made for our buxom beauties I am so happy. I finally get to find clothing that some of the most important women in my life will like and look good in. I hope this stuff becomes mainstream so that people don't have to suffer through the fat-shaming any longer. People who are plus-sized are not necessarily unhealthy. When they are unhealthy, it's obvious and I do support them losing weight to maintain their health, but only for that reason. So long as they are happy and healthy, no one should care what their clothing size is.
Many people in history didn't have to worry about buying "plus size" clothes because most women made their own clothes to fit them. Even my mom who was born in the 60's made her own clothes until she went to college because they were poor.
It's crazy how back in the day men thought of bigger women as being undesirable. Now they can't get enough of us lol. Where are all my proud plus size beauties at!? ❤
Fat women are less conventionally attractive because there’s a relatively high chance that if you are seen as ‘fat’ or ‘overweight’ then you probably have health problems and won’t survive long enough to have children to pass on a man’s genes. Obviously that isn’t a deciding factor as to Attractiveness now but reproducing was all the rage in the 20s

Yeah I can't help but think the shoulder pads for the 50s dress are all wrong
We tend to have an idea of vintage fashion based on movies or other media of the time, however, very few people probably dressed like that unless it was a very special occasion and depending on what time period they probably still didn't because it wasn't considered decent. While this video is definitely not accurate, a lot of clothing for all size-types would be considered matronly by today's standards. On top of all this, for a very long time, women tended to make their own clothing, especially when times got tough.
It helps when women, and non-average sized women are running a clothing company.
Plus size clothes still look matronly.

The green dress at the end looked more like a snuggie than a dress. That neckline was awful! I personally would never wear a neckline like that!

When growing up during late 60's, 70''s and the first couple of years of the 80's I was extremely thin and considered as underweight . Finding clothes for me was easy to do. My mother was a curvy woman , I never was aware that her clothing choices were limited. She managed to dress fashionably although she was a size 16 or 18. I of course wanted to be that tall curvy woman who was always impeccably dressed. Little did I know that finding clothes for her body type was so difficult and the only store she shopped at was Lane Bryant or she bought patterns and had her clothes made by a neighborhood seamstress . Now older I'm also fury . I have no problem finding clothes that fit my body.

Big Little Girl That’s weird because the pictures I’ve seen of her online show her to look pretty slender.
Today she would definitely be considered average size (she is not plus whatsoever) but back in the day people were a lot thinner due to a number of factors, so she would have been seen as "bigger" in comparison.

The supposed 1910s dress was the prettiest and had the most flattering cut. The model looked very good wearing it. No woman in the 1910s would have worn a dress with a faux front wrap which exposed that much leg with each step.)

In Ireland it's very difficult to find clothes in a 20 or above in a regular clothes shop, most plus size lines are only available online and not in store unless you go to boutiques or specialist shops and they tend to be expensive and or old fashioned or for evening wear not everyday trendy casual wear

The only thing they get right here is that plus sized women have been put in unflattering clothing for eons. As a child of a plus sized woman (and, awkwardly, the only one (male and female) in the family who is not plus-sized by fashion standards), I openly have seen over the years how much my mom and also older sister struggled to find things that were interesting and flattering at the same time. What I saw throughout the 90s and 2000s was either designers pulling off tents as shirts and dresses in order to hide the "unslightly fat rolls" or the exact same style as the "non plus size", just scaled up and put in the far corner of the store. These style may or may also make them look like an overstuffed sausage.
Even worse if you were a short plus sized lady. Good luck finding stuff that fit your limbs, but don't dig into your shoulders, bust, hips, and/or booty OR drag on the floor.
Let's go into shoes now... Um boots. If you're one of the plus sized ladies who have some serious muscle on those legs (which is extremely common), guess what? The boots won't fit around them. It's devastating to see them try to cram their legs into these tiny cylinders of fabric anyway because they want boots (or worse, say "oh no, I can't wear that. I'm too fat"). I wonder if it's harming them? Is it pinching nerves or cutting off circulation?
I'm not even going to go into swimwear or lingerie. More or less, it took forever to get my mom into a one piece because she'd say things like "no one wants to see me in something that tight".
Now, I am optimistic that fashion directed towards plus-sized ladies is a thing. I am slowly starting to see stuff specifically made for our buxom beauties I am so happy. I finally get to find clothing that some of the most important women in my life will like and look good in. I hope this stuff becomes mainstream so that people don't have to suffer through the fat-shaming any longer.
People who are plus-sized are not necessarily unhealthy. When they are unhealthy, it's obvious and I do support them losing weight to maintain their health, but only for that reason. So long as they are happy and healthy, no one should care what their clothing size is.

Many people in history didn't have to worry about buying "plus size" clothes because most women made their own clothes to fit them. Even my mom who was born in the 60's made her own clothes until she went to college because they were poor.

Fat women are less conventionally attractive because there’s a relatively high chance that if you are seen as ‘fat’ or ‘overweight’ then you probably have health problems and won’t survive long enough to have children to pass on a man’s genes. Obviously that isn’t a deciding factor as to Attractiveness now but reproducing was all the rage in the 20s
